Cormac McCarthy's name is not new in Hollywood, but this time he sold a full spec script instead of having his work adapted.
According to Deadline, the author of works like No Country for Old Men, The Road, and All the Pretty Horses, has sold his first spec screenplay. The Counselor has been acquired by the same team that adapted his earlier work The Road.
The story follows a respected lawyer who thinks he can get into the drug business without getting really deep into it. Of course that was a bad idea and he ends up is a desperate situation just doing his best to survive.
“The spec falls smack in the middle of what everyone responds to with Cormac’s novels,” producer Nick Wechsler said.
Steve Schwartz, another producer, said, “Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its sexual obsessions. It’s a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthy’s wit and humor in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthy’s most disturbing and powerful works.”
