I have stated in the past that I am not a fan of current music simply because I'm old and stubborn, but the last couple of months have brought about a new musical obsession in the form of Mac DeMarco, a Canadian musician whose sound reminds me a bit of Bowie mixed with The Cure with just a touch of The Smiths.
Now, I know what you're thinking, "But why should we take your word that this guy is good when you openly loathe everything and are sort of a snobby asshole?"
Well, first of all, his music is heavy. And I don't mean that in a sixties/seventies kind of way. I mean that his vocals and lyrics have heft to them- they fill up your chest cavity and then sit there with you for days- unlike a lot of music that is so airy and light that they disappear the moment the song is over, leaving nothing behind but the faint smell of peppermint.
Second, he knows how to put together a music video. Music aside, we live in an era of visual medium and when it comes to reigning in fans, videos still remain a big draw, and his are rather superb. Inventive, story-based and yes, occasionally off-putting (see My Kind of Woman below) they reflect his music and his particular sense of humor (at shows he often gets naked and performs lewd acts to loosen up the crowd) which is in short supply these days.
And finally third, the guy is only 23 and is creating music that belies his age which means, there's a very good chance that we are going to see some amazing stuff from him in the future.
So check out the videos below and fall in musical love...it'll be easy.
