This must be the Year of the Gein – Ed Gein to be exact. If there's a Serial Killer Hall of Fame in Heaven or Hell - Gein takes the cake – or liver – or heart, whatever your taste may be. You see, Gein was the inspiration for the Robert Bloch novel Psycho, which has recently been turned into the Bates Motel; and he was the inspiration for Thomas Harris' novels The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, which have been turned into numerous movies.
The latest incarnation of the Lecter saga is NBC’s Hannibal, and like Bates Motel, it’s a prequel – only it’s not since it’s set in the present – so there.
Created by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Heroes) and Executive Produced by Sara Colleton (Dexter), Hannibal focuses on the cat and mouse relationship between FBI criminal profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy – The Big C) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen – Casino Royale), a forensic psychiatrist and connoisseur of fine flesh cooking and dining.
Played differently than William Peterson’s portrayal in Manhunter, Dancy’s Will Graham is an FBI profiler with serious behavioral issues, plus he has Asperger’s Syndrome, which is part of the Autism Spectrum. He’s a brilliant but flawed character, and sort of a combination of Ryan Hardy (The Following), Fox Murder (X-Files), Dr. Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds), Sherlock Holmes (Elementary), Dexter Morgan (Dexter) and Patrick Jane (The Mentalist).
But being compared to all these other characters isn’t a bad thing – they’re all compelling, and so is Dancy’s Graham.
