When I first learned about adult and teenage guys falling in complete love with what is essentially a show about cartoon ponies, I will admit to a bit of, well, assholeness, which was nothing more than a bigotry against a fanbase that I misunderstood (which is sort of like the pot calling the kettle black considering that my love affair with the 80's cartoon Dungeons and Dragons is bordering on manic).
But then I had heard that John de Lancie (Q from STNG and the voice of Discord in Friendship is Magic) was heading up a Kickstarter campaign to make a documentary about this phenomenon after receiving tons of fan letters from adults and wanted to explore this interesting development in fandom (I mean if a Star Trek vet feels that an in depth probe into a fan base warrants a documentary, then you sort of have to pay attention).
The idea was certainly intriguing.
And, after raising more than $300,000 for the doc (which is now available for purchase HERE) we insensitive bastards who, for whatever reason, felt above the Bronies are in for a real cinematic treat: A fully developed story about finding inclusion in a world where one feels like an outsider featuring people who are not unlike ourselves (when being a geek wasn't cool).
Sound familiar?
Moving and heartfelt, Bronies is definitely something that fans of genre can and will relate to if they aren't too dead inside.
