According to THR, Rob Marshall is reteaming with Disney for a film adaptation of Into the Woods, the calssic 1980's Broadway musical written by Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street) and James Lapine.

Into the Woods will be the second collaboration between the director and Disney, the first being Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Marshall told THR that he and his producing partner John DeLuca have singed a two year deal with the studio.

Into the Woods stars several fairytale characters, including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel, with the story following a baker and his wife's attempt to have a family.

Lapine is currently working on the script to the adaptation and Marshall expects new songs for the film by Sondheim.

Marshall first worked with Sondheim back in the 1990's as the choreographer for his Broadway plays A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Company.

Marshall is no stranger to musicals, his directing debut was 2002's Chicago, which was the first musical to win the Oscar for Best Film since 1968's Oliver. He also directed the musical Nine back in 2009, unfortunately Nine didn't receive the rave reviews Chicago did even with Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood,In The Name of The Father, My Left Foot) in the lead role.

Marshall also has The Thin Man in the works which has Johnny Depp attached to star, but there's no word yet on which film will shoot first.
