Art is a surprising medium sometimes, especially when the choice of making an image comes not from ink, paint, or paper, but from something as mundane as a sock.
Artist/Architecht Hong "Red" Yi was inspired to make art out of this simple item after moving to Shanghai and witnessing that the old way of hanging laundry by a bamboo stick was still being widely practiced by the residents, although they had access to the modern convenience of the dryer.
Using this image of clothes hanging over alleyways, Red began pinning socks together to make a portrait of famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower):
