After the adaptation of Drive was a hit in 2011, James Sallis started working on writing a sequel, but he had some trouble with Driven.
According to The Independent, Sallis liked working on the books, but had difficultly not seeing his book in it's movie form. Driver continues the story of "a stunt man and getaway driver in LA."
