DC New 52 blings out my favorite super hero, The Situation is in the hizzy, and Comic Book City, USA has officially been declared. All this and more in today’s Comic Feed

Man of Steel Went For a Steal

The check that started it all, the check from Detective Comics to the creators of Superman, Jerome Siegel and Joe Shuster, was auctioned off this week in an online auction held by New York-based ComicConnect.

Fetching a cool $160,000, the auction house declined to give the name of the buyer, but did reveal that the check had been tucked away in a drawer for years and was sold on behalf of the heirs of a DC employee who saved a bit of history. Vincent Zurzolo, co-owner of ComicConnect said, "That $130 check essentially created a billion-dollar industry." For all you trivia geeks out there, in December the first issue of Detective Comics that unveiled Superman was sold at auction for $2.16 million. A bit more than the 10 cent price it fetched in 1938.

Wonder Woman Goes Gangsta

In a February interview with Comic Vine,  New 52 Wonder Woman artist Cliff Chiang said, “I'll continue to try and bring out the personality and character we've established: a heroic woman who, in spite of her abilities and divine parentage, is as human as the rest of us.” In this week’s issue 8, it looks like that means our Amazonian goddess is going to be wielding more than a golden lasso and bracelets; she’s taking a cue from humans and carrying around a blingy set of golden pistols. Who needs divine powers when you’re packin’ heat?

The Situation Just Got Worse

There are few things that make me scream “nooooo” in Skywalker fashion, but news of Wizard World’s deal with the Jersey famous Sorrentino family signing a deal to “create and publish a comic book hero based on Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and his family” has done just that. “Wizard World is excited to partner with one of pop culture’s greatest stars.  Mike ‘The Situation’ and his family will broaden our relationships with celebrities to new areas that leverage our access to the media, the fans, and especially our ability to bring comic book characters to life,” said John Macaluso, CEO, Wizard World. To quote the man himself, “I mean this situation is gonna be indescribable, you can't even describe the situation that you're about to get into the situation.”

Move Over Gotham…We’re Bringing You Comic Book City, USA

Greensboro, NC has officially declared itself Comic Book City, USA, after mask wielding citizens asked the City Council to approve the resolution. While the title will only be used on Free Comic Book Day every year, the initiative is more about literacy than comic books. Using the platform that comics not only spark the love of reading, but the use of imagination in today’s youth, the city will hold events at ACME Comics on this year’s FCBD.

Max Payne Finds a New Medium

Max Payne fans will be treated to some back story in the soon to be released original digital three-issue limited series collaboration between Rockstar Games and Marvel of Max Payne 3. Fernando Blanco, a Marvel and DC veteran, will take on the roll of penciler and inker, while Rockstar co-founder, Dan Houser, and Max Payne script writer, Sam Lake, will be writing the story. What could be better? It’s freeeeee! Or at least the digital version will be. A limited print issue will be published, with details on that coming soon. Look for the first issue, “After the Fall” to be released free of charge on the Rockstar Newswire and the “Max Payne 3” website in the next few weeks.

Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is a holiday in my house, and it looks like this year is going to be bigger than ever before. Diamond Comic Distributors has announced a huge jump in comics ordered for FCBD, which will be held on May 5th this year. Jumping from last year’s 2.7 million books ordered, this year saw a 23% increase to 3.5 million. This year will also mark the first comic industry Halloween event by Diamond, which they hope can create awareness that comic shops are a perfect destination on Halloween night.
