WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF OBAMA AND ROMNEY Merged Into One Super-Being? Watch This Hilarious Animation From ADHD and Find Out

We are only like three weeks away from electing the next president and to tell you the truth, I'm getting a bit overwhelmed by all of the talking head pundits, political ads and survey calls at 6am (are you listening to me weird South Carolina number that seems to stalk me?).

But this animated short by Fox as part of their new multi-platform property ADHD (which stands for Animation Domination High-Def), makes the political season a little less angry.

I guess that's all you can really hope for when you are CONSTANTLY WOKEN UP BY A GUY WANTING TO KNOW WHO YOU'D VOTE FOR...Stupid South Carolina.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S8E14: Requiem

$

Clark and Lana begin their Mr. and Mrs. Smith action tour while Winslow Schott, the Toymaker, makes his debut with an army of Kryptonite powered automatons aimed right at LuthorCorp.

Naturally, this means Ollie and Tess’ Queen Industries/LuthorCorp merger is off to less than stable results…

The Random:
1. Oh, sweet mother of mercy, Clark and Lana are having super sex again, breaking beds and shaking our poor old planet…and my faith in humanity.

2. It’s great that they’re trying to keep Lex still around in the mythos of the show, but at some point we’re going to need more than a generic bald guy seen from the back or wired to machines.  Oh, and one that doesn’t sound like a bad imitation of Jigsaw from Saw.

3. One kiss from KryptoLana is enough to almost kill Clark.  Now he knows how we’ve felt listening to her for the better part of eight years…

Gotta dig the Kryptonite ring he’s totally sporting…

The Awesome:
1. Not for nothing, but the Toymaker is portrayed as genuinely creepy and is actually a bit uncomfortable to watch, a testament to the acting this time around.

2. Clark’s whole scene with Chloe about the morality of killing Lex just because he knows everything about him really gets to the core of the character, as maddening as it may be at times, as Clark refuses to support Ollie’s vendetta against Lex.  It’s just too bad he needs Lana to remind him of the same later on.

3. Not being on the show anymore isn’t going to stop Lex from keeping things interesting as he puts Clark and Lana into a Catch-22 and winds ups pulling strings from all over the place and turning Lana into a giant Kryptonite emitting tool, meaning she and Clark can’t get close.  Well played, Mr. Luthor.

Pictured: One creepy ass bastard…

The WTF?!:
1. It’s always convenient how an entire room explodes and the only one to survive is a main character.  Really?  It wouldn’t have killed the writers to at least let a secretary or something live through the bomb?

2. Now why exactly doesn’t the CEO of one company, and co-CEO of another—both major companies, mind you—have some sort of security details while he lies recovering in the hospital?  Nah, that’s silly talk.  Instead, Toymaker is able to just ask the receptionist where Ollie is and waltz on in.  But, hey, he had balloons he had to be a good guy, right?  Um, do we all float down here..?

3. Is Chloe seriously getting on Ollie for “killing” Lex and blaming it on Toymaker?  Make up your mind, lady.  You were on the Kill Lex Murder Train like five minutes ago, and as Ollie just reminded you, I’m pretty sure Sebastian Kane didn’t die of natural causes a few episodes back, now did he?  No.  He did not.

“OK, folks, good news for those of you not happy with this merger thing:
In about 20 seconds, you’ll all be dead.”

in defense of HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH

$
0
0
Shout Factory has upped the ante this month with Blu-ray remasters of not-quite-so-classic 80s Horror under a new line called Scream Factory.

But I don't have to tell you that.  You know who you are.

You pre-ordered Terror Train and They Live the second you got wind of it.

You counted down the days for your  Halloween II and The Funhouse Blu-rays the moment you saw their retro-hip pack art.

And the crème de la crème of the seasonal unleashing of course - Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

The most head-scratchingly sick and twisted of the bunch.

I'll admit, there's a certain nostalgia for fans of Halloween III: Season of the Witch that masks us from seeing the movie for what it really is—an incredibly poorly made cash-in on a seemingly sustainable franchise.

But that's not important right now.

Back in the day, the moment you saw the TV Spots, let alone the original key art with its stretched trick-or- treaters silhouetted against a blood red demonic sky, you were hooked. Sure the film had absolutely nothing to do with Michael Myers, the driving force of the first two shockers.  For this kid, the mystery of that was enough to draw you in.  I remember being absolutely fascinated that it had nothing to do with Myers.

Of course, now in the age of meticulously remastered Blu-ray re-releases and scholarly discussions of failed films past, we can reflect on the details behind the film.

Everything and anything you need or wanted or didn't exactly ask for about Halloween III is on this new release, and I'll leave you to explore that on your own. The movie remains one of my favorite examples of an incredible concept that fails to come together coherently.

The third entry in the original Halloween franchise remains fascinating to fans of the series and horror in general.

The movie's themes of corporate consumerism of an originally Pagan holiday is way prophetic (been to a Halloween Spirit store lately?) and its use of Tom Atkins as a sex symbol is a reminder of a place and time we'll never see again.

Forget Frankenweenie or Hotel Transylvania this season of the witch, if you really wanna scare the pants off your kids, sit them down in front of the last 10 minutes of Halloween III and watch as they quickly determine that rubber mask they picked up for the big night might not be the best idea this year.

Auteur Freddie Wong, whose YouTube videos shame pretty much most of Hollywood, is back with a thematic car chase scene worthy of a Fast and Furious sequel, featuring R/C cars, miniature fruit carts and an R/C helicopter hell-bent on stopping the street racers.

It even has a delectable slow-mo scene that is so sublime that I almost teared up.

I love you Freddie Wong.

The Evolution Of Video Game Controllers

$
0
0
Say 'games controller' and the definitive image that pops into your head will probably be a pad with directional controls, a few letters or shapes and a start/select button.

Add an analogue stick and shoulder buttons if you like but what most people will describe is essentially a classic gamepad.

Or for those of you with more retro tastes - or *cough* you oldies *cough* (I'm sorry!) - there's the classic joystick. Aptly named, too! For what child or adult was without joy upon hearing the waka-waka-waka of Pac-Man?

Being born in the mid-80s I have vague recollections of joystick controlled games, mostly on the Atari 2600 and I still have strangely vivid memories of being taught how to play chess on a ZX Spectrum by my Dad.

Memories aside, the evolution of the classic gamepad style controller has been incredibly cyclic.

The Sega Master System and the NES controller's for example, both evolved ergonomically when their successors emerged.

Remember those little red indents on your palms where the corners had imprinted their shape onto your hand?

Well with the advent of the SNES and the Mega Drive (Genesis) both controllers became more rounded and comfortable to hold for long periods of time without denting your hand or causing The Claw.

Back then, these next-gen controllers felt like luxury compared to their predecessors and those of us lucky enough on the Christmas of 1990 (or 89 in the States) were the envy of our peers.

Years later, the fifth generation of gaming had arrived and the almighty analogue stick was born! Well.. it was less almighty and more underwhelming and weird.

Nintendo were first to make the leap - as they usually are.

Sadly, the placement of this analogue stick was less useful and when the Dreamcast followed suite, improving upon the design by moving the analogue stick to the left, sadly the clunky size of the controller and faltering sales meant that even learning from Nintendo's mistakes didn't help.

It was only when Sony launched their dual analogue controller for the PlayStation that the definitive design for the gaming controller was introduced.

The PlayStation and PS2 controllers were the ones I became most familiar with as I pretty much spent my teens playing Resident Evil, Silent Hill and any other survival horror I could. When the Xbox launched I was intrigued and having heard good things from a few friends about Halo, I invested in my first Microsoft console.

My initial thoughts were mainly the size.

I was surprised by its beast of a controller and it took a lot of getting used to. It was humongous, though the design did match its equally loud and bulky console.

Then the next gen consoles arrived with one major selling point: wireless controllers.

No longer would you be tripping over trailing cables or suddenly wrenching your console onto the floor! No, with this science fiction upgrade you could sit, stand or walk around anywhere in the room and the console would be able to see you.

Amazing. Who could improve on such a necessary upgrade?

Nintendo have often led the way in terms of innovative gaming controllers, first with the analogue stick, the touch screen and with motion sensor controls. Of course being the first means that others can modify and improve upon the original.

Take the Nintendo Wii controls. I absolutely loved them when they were released, they felt new and exciting. I enjoyed how comfortable they felt and how they were designed.

The game that truly sold them to me was The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - using the motion control as a sword whilst holding the nunchuck control as a shield felt incredibly natural and both were utilised with ease and felt intuitive.

Then, what followed were games that came with extra peripherals to purchase or games which only ever seemed to require the use of the main motion control stick.

The novelty had worn off for me and I no longer had the excitement for potential 'sword and shield' controlled games.

Then Microsoft got one up on Nintendo and launched Kinect which had no controller except the player (arguably - there's also the PlayStation EyeToy - remember that? Probably not, huh?).

On the release day, I went to a friend's house to sample its delights and felt like I was in Minority Report.

Though I'm glad Microsoft introduced it as a peripheral because although it's impressive, the technology still has a way to go. Saying "Xbox Play Game" is still more work than pressing a button and having to recalibrate it every time I played Dance Central because the light had changed ever so slightly was a little annoying.

Whereas Nintendo want to embrace change and expect the world to embrace it with them willingly, Microsoft and Sony know that their analogue gamepad designs work, so why change them too much, if at all?

There's one controller I haven't made mention of and it's been around since the beginning; the steadfast dependable keyboard.

If I say 'WASD' or 'ESDF' only a handful of you will know what I'm on about. Those handful would be PC gamers and I'd go as far as to say that referring to them as a mere 'handful' is quite the understatement. PC games like The Sims franchise have had over 50 million sales to date and MMORPGs are still hugely popular.

During University - when I mostly played Counterstrike - those keys in particular were so used that they were the first keys to wear down the letters on my keyboard.

Despite it's longevity, if your graphics card isn't up to the job then there's no point even bothering and the keyboard and mouse combo can hurt your hands after a while, plus I don't need to be a doctor to know that sitting so close to a screen for long periods of time is bad for you.

Which is why my favourite controller is the latest Xbox 360 controller: durable, wireless, simple, beautifully formed and surprisingly comfortable, especially during those long all-night gaming sessions.

Granted, they aren't that dissimilar to the PS3 controller but having both analogue sticks in the centre causes a symmetrical and somewhat unnatural horizontal thumb thing that can tend to produce soreness - fact*

It's easy to talk about which controller I like best but some people don't have that choice or ability.

There are some tailor made consoles out there that allow the disabled to play alongside the able-bodied and some of these adaptations an the technology employed are quite simply incredible. Here in the UK, we have the charity Special Effect which make video games compatible for the disabled. They've worked on numerous projects but the one that strikes me as amazing is something they call StarGaze Plus which is a program allowing the player to control a game based on gaze alone... and there I was thinking Kinect was impressive.

However, rather than being a gimmick or peripheral, these are devices that allow those who would previously be unable to join in, a chance at the action.

But despite the various developments, leaps and bounds made in the advance of futuristic hand/eye/body motion control, that big chunky piece of plastic will always be the star of the show and how its designed will continue to launch debates and divide gamers.

This January, MARS ATTACKS IDW!

Bloodthirsty Martians Take On All-Star IDW Properties in an Extinction-Level Event!

IDW Publishing regrets to inform you that this January, many of your most beloved characters are coming under attack. Vicious, bloodthirsty Martians have descended from the skies and crossed through infinite panels and dimensions seeking total comic book conquest! Batten down the hatches and assemble your militia, because 2013 is kicking off with MARS ATTACKS IDW!

Beginning in the first week of January, Topps’ terrifying Martian conquerors are infiltrating many of IDW’s prized titles in five weekly one-shots. It’s going to take guts, smarts, and the brute force of an unprecedented army of talented comics creators to fight them off!

“It seems natural for the Mars Attacks Martians to go on the offensive—attacking is right there in their title—and now we see that they’re just too out of control to keep their warlike ways confined to their own series,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief and strategic planner of this five-pronged invasion. “And as exciting as the weekly attack is going to be, I’m equally enthused about the insane cover variations going on with each issue. Read on and be amazed by the talent assembled to offer visual clues of what we’d be in for had the Martians attacked more than just five top IDW titles.”

Invasion alarms start sounding January 2, when MARS ATTACKS POPEYE. Martin Powell, Terry Beatty, and Tom Ziuko will team up to chronicle the Martians pulling into a port of pain to take on the spinach-enhanced sailorman. Fans can be certain it’ll be all hands on deck with a high wave advisory with the MARS ATTACKS POPEYE cover by Ray Dillon—all of Dillon’s covers will mimic the look of worn out trading cards, complete with back-cover text just like an old Mars Attacks card set—and retailer incentive covers of MARS ATTACKS MISS FURY by J. Bone and MARS ATTACKS OPUS by Berkeley Breathed!

January 9, the battlefront expands across time and space to the same 1970s New York City when MARS ATTACKS KISS, a twisted retelling of the very first Kiss comic book! Will the Martians’ hunger for otherworldly destruction be a match for the sheer force of rock n’ roll? Only Chris Ryall, Alan Robinson, and Tom Ziuko will have the answer! Featuring a cover by Ray Dillon and incentive covers of MARS ATTACKS JUDGE DREDD by Greg Staples and MARS ATTACKS THE STARSLAMMERS by Walter Simonson! The mighty leaders of the KISS Army are calling in the cavalry, and something tells us it’s not Doctor Love!

January 16, the Martian menace takes the fight to the world’s pre-eminent poltergeist punishers when MARS ATTACKS THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS! When Martians invade, Erik Burnham and Jose Holder know just who they’re gonna call! Everyone knows Venkman, Stantz, Spengler, and Zeddemore ain’t afraid of no ghosts, but what about aliens? With a cover by Ray Dillon and incentive covers of MARS ATTACKS MADMAN by Michael and Laura Allred and MARS ATTACKS CHEW by Rob Guillory, the streams of comic book awesomeness are sure to be crossed!

January 23, the drums of war begin beating double-time when the Martian armada clashes with Cybertron’s finest when MARS ATTACKS THE TRANSFORMERS! Daring to take on Optimus Prime’s fearsome army, this epic battle of Martian versus machine will be chronicled by Shane McCarthy and Matt Frank with a cover by Ray Dillon! If that daring incursion wasn’t enough, this one-shot will also feature incentive covers of MARS ATTACKS STRANGERS IN PARADISE by Terry Moore and everyone’s favorite vampire antihero sharpening his teeth for MARS ATTACKS SPIKE by Franco Urru! That’s right, Angel fans, you get one last look at IDW’s version of Spike, thereby proving all the rules are meant to be broken in this insane weekly event!

January 30, just when the brawl for it all seems like it can’t get any bigger, MARS ATTACKS ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS! Chris Ryall, Andy Kuhn, and John Rauch will be there to chronicle the titanic terror when the three battle-hardened armies collide! As the final blows for galactic supremacy are struck, they’ll be accompanied by a cover from Ray Dillon and incentive covers of MARS ATTACKS ROG-2000 by John Byrne and MARS ATTACKS CEREBUS, by Dave Sim!

This January, everything is on the line and fans of all callings are encouraged to sign up and do their part. The Green Menace from the Red Planet is attacking from all angles and no theater of war will go untread upon as MARS ATTACKS IDW!

Will you welcome our new Martian overlords, or will you take up arms with comics’ greatest heroes and give them the boot? Decide quickly-- saucers are en route!

Bill Hicks and George Carlin were two of the most biting and brilliant comedians that the world ever had the pleasure of knowing, and losing them has been a tremendous loss.

But thanks to the wizards behind the Symphony of Science videos, we can at least hear the two of them discuss the meaning of life through auto-tuned awesomeness and find peace in the fact that their words will live on longer than any of us.

And, if there is something waiting for us after we leave this mortal coil, I really hope the place has a comedy club, 'cause I'm looking forward to the show.

Peruvian graphic artist, Guillermo Fajardo has taken four iconic breakfast cereal mascots (Tony the Tiger, Count Chocula, Trix Rabbit and Cap n' Crunch) and re-imagined them as more, well, real people.

The effect is disturbing to say the least and has, at least for this cereal junkie, gotten her off of Trix, probably forever, due to the off-putting visage of the Trix "Are for Murdering Kids" Rabbit.

Chewbacca help us all if the Powers-that-Be ever decide to make these the official mascots of the cereal boxes, as I'm guessing that the sound of children screaming will be heard throughout the land every morning.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S8E15: Infamous

Fresh off her showing at the Preakness, Tori Spelling is back to reprise her role as gossip queen, Linda Lake, once again trying to reveal Clark’s secret to the world.

And remember Davis?  Yeah, the dude who became Doomsday and nearly killed a bunch of people?  He’s finally resurfaced…

The Random:
1. Yay, Lois is back.  She’s fighting with Clark and all that, but at least she’s not Lana.  Unfortunately, Clark stands her up either way.  For shame.

2. Jimmy’s being transferred to another hospital and is apparently well enough for DVDs even though he’s not being shown.  Shouldn’t they have made a bit more of a deal about that?

3. Davis.  Dude.  Buddy.  Yeah.  Those anti-psychotics you’ve been popping?  I think they stiffed you on the “anti” part…

You’re probably gonna want to up those meds, bro.

The Awesome:
1. Clark is certainly starting to embrace this whole hero thing, contemplating beating Linda Lake to the punch and exposing the secret himself, even to Lois.  Naturally, it’s not going to last, but the moments we get, and the ramifications of them, are pretty interesting.

2. Watching Clark’s coming out party go from the highest of the highs to the lowest of the lows is a bit over the top, but really hammers home how media hype and misinformation can sway public opinion in a matter of moments as he goes from adored to hated.  It’s a good thing politicians never do that with the full support of their partisan followers, right?

3. It seems a little too neat and clean, but Clark’s use of the Legion ring to go back in time and head Linda Lake off at the pass was a damn good idea, even if he did it a second too early and failed to get the reveal that Davis was really Doomsday.  The plus side, though?  He tazed the crap out of Tori Spelling.

Face it.  We were all thinking about doing it.

The WTF?!:
1. I thought they learned their lesson last time out by giving Tori Spelling a chance to speak.  She couldn’t act then, she can’t act now, so please never allow Smallville 90210 to happen again.  Seriously.  For all of our sakes.

2. So Davis gets caught dipping into the medical supply room of the hospital while acting all shady and the nurse that stops him basically takes his word that he’s on the up and up, despite not seeing an ID of any sort.  Oh, you’re in a uniform and claim you work here?  Why, sure, help yourself to our pharmacopia, strange guy who claims he works here who I’ve never seen.

3. Is Linda Lake really trying to blackmail Doomsday?  Did she really think that was a good idea?  Somehow, yes, she did.  Oh well, thanks to the absolute zero in the way of hospital security, he was able to smother her, thus upping the mortality rate of our favorite medical establishments once again.

Oh, don’t be sad, Tori.  There’s no need to
have such a long fa…oh.  Right.

Well, it's Friday and that means I am posting a video that is uncomfortable and a bit upsetting to watch.

It's nice to have something to look forward to isn't it?

 Happy Weekend everyone.

SEX CRIMINALS UNLEASHED AT NEW YORK COMIC CON

New series by Fraction and Zdarsky to be released in 2013

Comic book creators Matt Fraction (CASANOVA, Avengers vs. X-Men, The Invincible Iron Man) and Chip Zdarsky (Prison Funnies, Monster Cops) invite you to come with them as they release SEX CRIMINALS through Image Comics in 2013. This brand-spanking new sex comedy follows two young lovers as they go on a lust-fueled crime spree with a twist -- when they have sex, time itself seems to stop. Set in a world where the laws of time and space are as dubious and mutable as the laws of man and society, SEX CRIMINALS promises to scandalize, titillate, and provoke when it bursts onto the comics scene next year.

"Not to toot our own horns, but there's never been a comic book like Sex Criminals before,” Fraction tossed off. "There've been comedy books with sex, or sex comics with comedic moments, but no book with 'sex comedy' as its narrative thrust. Hard to imagine, but comedy and sex, which fit together so naturally literally everywhere else in the entertainment world, don't get done in comic books. Chip and I are thrilled to be the first ones in there to plant our seed.”

Zdarsky, legendary cartoonist for National Post and impish Canadian prankster, topped that statement: "This project brings together my two loves: crime and an in-depth exploration of the Western banking system and its ill-effects on society. I've spent years working for newspapers and magazines and am looking forward to completing my 'dying industry trifecta' and give comic books my all while holding back the tears.”

Fraction and Zdarsky, having searched long and hard for the perfect collaboration, knew they were destined for each other if only the right project came along. "Chip is a singular creator in the world of comics: he's smart, he's talented, he has an eye unlike any other, and he makes me laugh like a jackal,” Fraction spewed forth. "He's like a smutty Day-Glo Will Elder that spells words with u's where they don't belong and uses the metric system. I'm excited to think the words 'SEX CRIMINALS' will now appear in his obituary later this year.”

Zdarsky gushed "There's a very short list of people who I would want to work with on a comic project and Matt Fraction is at the top of that list. I love the humour he brings to his projects and always thought he should do something all-out funny, because, frankly, there aren't enough funny books out there since Identity Crisis. No wait. Was Blankets before or after Identity Crisis?”

Image Comics was unavailable for comment.

An ongoing comic series that puts the comic back in comics, and the sexy back into sex crime, SEX CRIMINALS comes in 32 full-color pages for a cover price of $3.50.

Kickstart This: SCIENCE FICTION LAND The Story of The Story That Became ARGO

If you've seen Argo, you might not be aware that the redheaded, scruffy cartoonist who did the visual designs was supposed to be The King of Comics himself, the late, great Jack Kirby.

Also not mentioned in the film was that the Argo screenplay was based on science fiction writer Roger Zalazny's Lord of Light and that the project was marketed with a larger project, Science Fiction Land, the world’s first science fiction theme park.

And thankfully, someone is trying to bring this forgotten part of the story to the masses.
