Reviews of Films I Have Never Seen: ARGO – Hunted Yanks Must Impersonate Ironic Movie People

Iran. 1979. A country gashed by chaos and violence.

Staff members flee the American Embassy after it’s occupation by energetic savages from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Hiding out in the Canadian Embassy, living on a diet of food served primarily at hockey games, the half-dozen Americans sense they’ll soon be located. Execution and torture are distinct possibilities.

But it turns out they have one shot at escape: convince brutal Iranian thugs that they’re actual snooty Hollywood filmmakers.

Directed by Ben Affleck, who drew on experiences at political fundraisers and Cannes, this film is a taunt study in how ordinary people must quickly master an attitude of self-absorbed entitlement if they’re to escape the foaming wrath of the Mullahs.

Based on actual events, we see ace CIA trouble shooter Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) arrive in Iran with a cover story: the six Americans are to say they’re from Hollywood, scouting locations for a horrible sci-fi film called Battlefield Earth  Argo.

At the Canadian Embassy, Mendez struggles getting normal people to scream and bitch that their gourmet coffee is the wrong temperature. He knows from his Hollywood connections that it takes years to acquire the right level of peevish rage over minor incidents.

In addition, the embassy workers must learn Hollywood jargon, a coded language:

Net Points – “You’re screwed.”

Labor of Love – “Work for free.”

Possible Future Pay – “You’re screwed and stupid.”

The spy finally pleads with his half-dozen charges: “Imagine everyone on Earth who isn’t more powerful than you is here as your personal servant. And when they don’t help you correctly, it’s really hurtful.”

In the meantime, the Revolutionary Guards experience a lucid moment between shooting people. They gather clues that will lead them to the hiding Americans.

One step ahead of pursuit, Mendez and team use forged documents to pass through airport security, making snarky, ironic cracks about people mentioned in Variety.  Suddenly there’s a heart-stopping moment.

A Revolutionary Guard detains them.

Tension mounts. It appears the game is up.

Will the guard open fire or hand them a screenplay?

Mihaela Lacramioara plays an uncredited refugee. Being a refugee is difficult enough. I would never flee to another place without credit

Affleck earns three stars for appearing on screen again after Gigli. Did you see him in that? OMG! The woooorst. I blew chow in my café latte. Could you introduce me to your agent?

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S8E11: Legion

Clark has to tangle with the Persuader, but he won’t have to do it alone.

Is the Justice League back in town?

No, it’s a little trio from the future—Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Lightning Lad from the infamous Legion of Super-Heroes!

The 31st century is now, so long live the Legion!

The Random:
1. Not for nothing, Legionnaires, but you gotta know dumping all this “you’re going to be awesome sauce” stuff on Clark is going to be hard for him to swallow.

2. Even the Legion is surprised that Clark can’t fly yet given that they can, Kara can, Martian Manhunter could, and everyone else and their mother has been able to at one point or another.  At least they got a dig in at the show’s proposed edict of “no tights, no flights.”

3. Really, Chloe’s seen some better days and this whole possessed by Brainiac meets Carrie during the prom look she’s got going on is less than flattering.

“Wait, what do you mean we’re talking crazy?  We’re three people
with magic rings claiming to be from a future where you’ve inspired
entire galaxies.  What’s so hard to grasp about that?”

The Awesome:
1. The Persuader sure knows how to make an entrance, teleporting into the barn and using his axe to smash stuff up and slice through Clark, but not to be undone, the Legion arrive fresh from the 31st century and kick his ass.  That’s some good stuff.  And the way they use their powers?  Even better.

2. The Brainiac/Doomsday connection comes to full light as Brainiac takes Chloe completely over and Davis tries to fight against what he really is as the mythos of the show takes a huge building sized leap.  Brainiac’s whole master plan is truly something right out of comic book lore, trying to drain every bit of knowledge from the planet and then destroy it.

3. Seeing the Legion work with Clark to excise Brainiac from Chloe’s body is the type of team up we need to see more of, especially as Clark had to wrestle with choosing between saving his best friend and risking Brainiac ruling the world.  And at least Chloe’s got her memories of Clark back.  She’s much more interesting when she knows stuff.  And seeing Clark autograph a baseball with his heat vision is icing on the episode.  Well, that and the reference to Brainiac Five and leaving Clark a Legion ring.  Excellent.

“Go, Planet!!  I mean, long live the Legion!”

The WTF?!:
1. Clark arrives back at the farm and finds Lana there and claims he’s tried everything to find Chloe, including three different time zones.  He also tells her he thinks he knows what the thing that attacked was.  But did he check the Fortress?  No, of course not!  What the hell, CK?!  Why was that not your first damn stop?!

2. Saturn Girl confronts Lana to try and get her aboard the Kill Chloe to Stop Brainiac Crazy Train and tries to butter her up by telling her that the history books possess vast information on how important she is to the future.  Holy crap, it really doesn't get better in the future, does it?

3. The Legion has been inspired by Clark, so how can they not know about his number one rule, that he never intentionally kills anyone?  You’d think that would be a huge friggin’ part of his history.

“Wait, no killing?  Really?  Since WHEN?  Since always?
Huh.  Who knew?  Our bad, Kal.”

FOR THE LOVE OF FALKOR: Hide Your Unsightly E-Reader Between the Covers of the Classic Kid's Book 'The Neverending Story'

I've only punched one person in the face while sober and that is because the jackass had the audacity to criticize the great Neverending Story. As far as I'm concerned, he had it coming (although the principal at my elementary school didn't feel the same way).

The fight started over the movie. Not because one of us liked it and the other didn't (although there was that), but because I said it was a book first (which my dad brought back after a visit to Switzerland in 1983) and the douche said I was a liar and that no one would write a book that stupid.

Needless to say, my fist corrected him quite ferociously.

Anyway, The Neverending Story by Michael Ende has always been one of my favorite fantasy novels and the fact that someone has made it into an e-reader cover is testament to a story that is so fucking amazing that I would be willing to smash in the skull of another human being willingly AT THE AGE OF TEN.

And yes, putting my electronic gizmo that is filled with science fiction, horror stories and porn in inside it seems like a fitting tribute.

So there.

The Symbolism and Biology of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD

$

Holy Cats, I love this movie.

It’s a classic in every sense off the word and can still be watched with un-ironic enjoyment.

It’s one of my favorite monster movies.

I do believe John Carpenter’s is a little superior, but it does not distract from what makes this film fun.

The monster is also vastly different.

In the original story “Who Goes There?”  the monster was more akin to Carpenter’s: a shape shifting horror that could disguise itself as anyone.  At the time, such special effects were well beyond their conception, let alone execution (at least, outside of a cartoon).

As such, the monster was changed dramatically, altering its symbolism completely.

Symbolism
A lot of the symbolism of the monster relates to how the people react to the beast.

Though the monster is intelligent, its behavior is often bestial and savage when confronted, so I will refer to it as such.  With the Cold War just starting out (and even alluded to in the film), and the monster behaves in the standard way 50s-monsters-embodying-soviet-fears do.  He’s a hulking giant of a thing, unstoppable by modern weapons, but largely slow and lumbering.

However, unlike most such horrors, this creature is also an adept subversive agent.  With it becoming the embodiment of Soviet spy fears, the compound becomes a microcosm of the United States.

The Thing sabotages the infrastructure, sews descent amongst intellectuals* and secretly grows an army right under their noses.

*Because fear of learned people among the general population has pretty much always been a thing.

The way the lead scientist, Doctor Carrington, describes the Thing really cements its status as a cold war stand in for the Russians.  Not that military bureaucracy gets much better.  An entire sequence listing the protocol for the Air Force’s stance on “Flying Saucers” is played for laughs early on and as a storm kicks up around the compound, all meaningful contact is lost.

“Oh, that’s what I like about the army.  Smart, all the way to the top.”

Leaving the heroes on their own against the Thing, but military command structure is still the default.

In an effort to make it truly “Alien”, the creature was turned from a shape shifting horror into, as one character calls it, “An Intellectual Carrot”.   The film then has to go and try and justify why an “Intellectual Carrot” should be scary.  It only really succeeds when it comes to killing the weed.

Biology
The characters may call it an “Intellectual carrot”, or a ‘plant’ but given its ambulatory nature, it can’t be a true plant.

Also, the whole ‘alien’ thing would make it more ‘plant-like’ than plant.  It may indeed have cell walls, but not so rigid as to prevent movement.   When plants ‘move’, it is mostly through rapid growth.  This is how a Venus fly trap captures prey, by growing at the hinge to close the trap.

So, this “planimal” shows many remarkable abilities, the key most being that it is intelligent.  It may be a grunt soldier by the way it handles things, but it is at least self-aware.

Its body is armed with claws, or at least thorns.

Inside the fingers are the creature’s seed pods, through which it can reproduce asexually.

Despite the lead scientist’s claims, plants do NOT reproduce asexually with regularity.

Flowers, for instance, are the reproductive organs of most plants, using bees as go-betweens.

Because of its plant-like structure and high regenerative ability (it regrows an arm in a couple of hours), it renders most physical attacks ineffective.

Fire doesn’t do much as well, though it certainly hurts.

This is not unexpected.

Green plants simply do not burn as readily due to the amount of water and liquid within them.  Dry plants burn best.

The diet of the creature is, however, rather odd.  A diet of animal blood (let’s ignore any potential biochemical barriers an alien organism would have when encountering earthly biology).

Blood is actually a very poor diet, and consists mostly of water.  This is why vampire bats urinate as they feed, to stuff themselves full of hemoglobin when feeding.

It shows no fangs in its form, and it may be the claws serve as feeding apparatuses.

Its cranium is also enlarged, probably to signify a large brain to 50s audiences, but for a plant-animal creature, its neurological system would be unlike anything else.

But its 50s logic designing this creature.  Like many aliens of the time, they take the basic frame of a person and just add strange powers and things to its appearance.  It’s lazy and uncreative to be honest, but it’s the way a lot of people view other sentient life forms when constructing fiction.  They tend to forget to subtract things that make humans really amazing, like our endurance running, resistance to heat, etc.

Speaking of heat, the full body burn done in the film was the first of its kind.

Aside from creating the earliest hallmarks of classic horror cinematography, this film also is a milestone in stunt work as well.

Just two more reasons to see this movie.

BEAUTIFUL NARCISSISM: Create A Cardboard Version of Your Awesome Self With Foldable.Me and Never Drink Alone Again

There is no greater love in the entire world than love you have for yourself.

Oh sure, there are some people that will go on and on about the love a parent has for a child and blah, blah, blah but really, when that mewling offspring is screaming about something incoherent at the grocery store, don't you think that parent is really wishing they could just walk right out the store, get into their car and never stop driving?

Of course they are...because they love themselves more than that horrible beast that was created during a moment of drunken passion.

And why not celebrate that level of narcissism by creating a wonderful little cardboard army of yourself to hang out with.

From the folks at Foldable.Me you can create a likeness of yourself for only $11.99 that will then shipped to you so that you can fold your persona up into a little boxy person who can travel with you anywhere.

Think of it as a testament to your awesomeness.

But, if you are the kind of person that feels awkward about loving yourself more than the world, then feel free to create various versions of your friends and family members to give away for the holidays.

I'm pretty sure they would love it.

Comic News: DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT Announces a Slew Of Upcoming Projects

$
0
0

My inbox has been filling up as NYCC approaches (and by "approaches," it's here) and many of them are from Nick Barrucci's Dynamite Entertainment.  We already ran the news that the might Mark Waid was writing Green Hornet in 2013, but here are some other equally interesting announcements.

FRED VAN LENTE TO WRITE NEW ZOMBIE SERIES
Fans of The Walking Dead and George Romero movies will not want to miss this series, coming in 2013 from Dynamite Entertainment!
"Like a lot of things that I do, my zombie project at Dynamite mocks a genre while very much being a part of that genre," says writer Fred Van Lente.  "In a lot of zombie stories we get the beginning of plague, or the zombie apocalypse, but we skip all the military, governmental and just plain human screw ups that got us from Point A to Point B. Well, that's all this book is about -- a global disaster of this magnitude results in a lot global stupidity, and therein lies comedy. Think of this as World War Z with jokes and a B drive-in movie Grindhouse sensibility. At the heart of our story is a group of message-board experts -- yes, geeks -- recruited (not without real-life precedent) by the Defense Intelligence Agency to see if they can't apply their unparalleled knowledge of the zombie genre to figure a way to solve the crisis. As a professional comics writer, will I allow Internet know-it-alls save the world, or will they all be horrifically slaughtered? I can't wait to find out myself."

GRIMM COMIC BOOKS WILL HIT STORES IN 2013!
In Grimm, Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police Bureau learns he is descended from a line of "guardians" known as "Grimms," charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures called "Wesen." Throughout the episodes, he must battle against an assortment of dangerous creatures, with help from his friend Monroe (who is a reformed creature), and his partner Detective Hank Griffin.

"The opportunity to delve even deeper into the Grimm universe is an exciting prospect.  One we hope fans of the show and comic books in general will equally enjoy." said Executive Producers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf. "The medium will allow the story to go places we never could within the constraints of a television production. It's pretty cool."

MATT STURGES TO WRITE NEW DAMSELS SPIN-OFF SERIES!
Damsels, a story featuring Cinderalla, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Snow White proved to be such a huge hit for Dynamite that they are coming out with a spin-off series to Damsels!

"What Damsels does for dry land, this book does for the ocean," says writer Matt Sturges. "We've got mermaids! Pirates! A kraken! Sirens! All wrapped up in fast-past coming-of-age story, filled with treachery, high adventure, and very probably some sharks.  (And maybe even a little romance for good measure.) In short: if it's in a fairy tale or legend, and it's wet, we've got it."

DAN ABNETT AND ANDY LANNING TO WRITE NEW ONGOING CLASSIC BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SERIES
Dynamite has announced the renewal of the classic 1978 Battlestar Galactica license with NBCUniversal, as the acclaimed writing duo of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have signed on to write an epic series in the classic universe for  2013.

"I'm really looking forward to working with Dynamite on this Battlestar Galactica project," says writer Dan Abnett.  "I've been a fan of Battlestar Galactica since I was a kid, and it's going to be great for Andy and I to get our cosmically-honed teeth into such a long-standing and beloved Science Fiction franchise."

Andy Lanning adds, "The original series of Battlestar Galactica was like catnip to my younger self; more than filling my rabid craving for spaceships, laser weapons, robots and alien invasions! It had cool characters, snappy dialogue, creepy alien cyborgs, awesome space battles with fantastic special effects (it was 1978 cut me some slack) and a totally cute robot dog! So, imagine the thrill and excitement to be given the chance to develop something in the Battlestar Galactica universe: to get to play with characters and concepts that I've grown up with, that are such a part of my formative years. With this new series from Dynamite, Dan and I are hoping we can add to the established cannon of continuity with our own take on the classic series.  I know my inner 14 year old is squealing with delight at this opportunity. I'm still holding out hope that one day I'll get my own Daggit too!"

TOM SNIEGOSKI RETURNS TO VAMPIRELLA!
Fan-favorite Vampirella writer Tom Sniegoski returns with all new series - Vampirella Strikes!  Tom is one of the most successful fan favorite writers coming back to Vampirella, having previously written multiple Vampirella series including the long running Vengeance of Vampirella #1- #25.

In Vampirella Strikes #1, Fearful that her monstrous nature is taking control, Vampirella takes solace in some extreme violence, and conversation, all topped off with a nice glass of Merlot, in a Boston tavern overrun by the demonic in the first part of this six issue story.  Living in a world of growing supernatural threats, Vampirella never knows what she will be facing from one moment to the next, but what she finds waiting for her in her Boston Brownstone when she returns from a night of hunting is the most unexpected of all.  Angels of Heaven sent by God . . . and they want Vampirella to work for them.

"They say you can't go home again," says writer Tom Sniegoski. "But, you know what?  It wasn't so hard.  I think I might've missed her. For my first Vampirella Strikes storyline (On the Side of Angels), I'm taking our heroine to a place she's never really been before.  Sure, Vampirella has done battle with all kinds of monsters, beasts and demons of various shapes and sizes, but I wanted to take her out of her element-I wanted to push her into a world commonly believed to be one of light, and goodness, and show her that there is darkness there as well."

DYNAMITE LAUNCHES NEW CRIME LINE WITH WRITERS GARTH ENNIS AND ANDY DIGGLE
According to Dynamite President Nick Barrucci "We've been working on putting together a line of crime books for quite a bit of time, but needed to ensure we had the right caliber of creators.  We've had conversations with multiple creators over time, and as luck would have it, in the last few months, quite a few were coming to fruition."

Garth Ennis will write a new series, Red Team, with up-and-coming artist Craig Cermak. "Earlier this year, the four members of the NYPD's elite strike unit Red Team decided to murder a suspect," says writer Garth Ennis.  "And the worst possible thing that could happen...  happened!"  Adds artist Craig Cermak, "Dark and moody are what I think some of my strong points are artistically, and that is what this series has. Interesting characters, a great premise, and hard situations. Being able to step into this world is such a treat to draw and I'm pushing to really deliver the quality it deserves."

Andy Diggle is set to write his next series which will be part of Dynamite's new crime line of comics.

"It's not every day that a publisher offers you the chance to create a whole new world from scratch, and I'm having fun cooking up something dark, funny, violent and twisted for Dynamite," says writer Andy Diggle. "Hard-hitting genre fiction with a twist, for readers who don't like having their intelligence insulted. The kind of comic I want to read myself. So there's really just one question - are you in or are you out?"

PETER V. BRETT RETURNS TO RED SONJA!
New York Times bestselling author Peter V. Brett returns to pick up where he left off in the critically acclaimed Red Sonja: Blue with a four-part series for new readers and fans alike. Bereft of her signature chain mail, Sonja finds herself free of much of the reputation that went with it, and begins a new series of adventures clad in a familiar blur fur tunic. Haunted by her past and the spirit of the demon whose pelt she wears, Sonja finds beginning over harder than expected.

"I have a reputation for writing strong female characters in my books, but Red Sonja is the OG* where kickass fantasy heroines are concerned," says writer Peter V. Brett.  "I've been reading Sonja comics since I was twelve, so working on the Red Sonja: Blue One-Shot last year was a huge thrill. I immediately asked Dynamite to let me pick up where I left off. The new Red Sonja: Blue 4-issue series will add new depth to the character as she finds herself with blood on her hands that doesn't easily wash off, struggling with her inner demons even as a very real one pursues her. It will be a great starting point for new readers, but there will be enough action and classic adventure to satisfy even the most hardcore fans."

GUILLERMO DEL TORO AND GRANT MORRISON ANNOUNCE TWO ALL-NEW PROJECTS FROM LEGENDARY COMICS

PACIFIC RIM GRAPHIC NOVEL AND ANNIHILATOR SET FOR 2013 RELEASE

Film Director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim) and comic creator Grant Morrison (Batman, X-Men) were on hand at Legendary Comics’ pre-New York Comic-Con media event to announce two all-new projects for the comics division of Legendary Entertainment. The announcements come on the heels of the launch of the first volume of The Tower Chronicles, Legendary’s first original IP release written by Matt Wagner and drawn by Simon Bisley.

With these two projects added to the slate, Legendary is poised for an impressive 2013 with projects also being released by Mark Waid, Max Brooks, and Shane Davis (Shadow Walk) and J. Michael Straczynski (The Majestic Files) as well as further releases from The Tower Chronicles.

Pacific Rim Graphic Novel
As fans continue to soak in all new details regarding Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures upcoming motion picture release Pacific Rim, del Toro used New York Comic-Con to announce the Pacific Rim graphic novel. A must-read for anyone who wants to see the movie, the graphic novel will serve as a prequel, providing important details on the characters and the lead up to the story arc of the movie. Written by the film’s writer Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), the graphic novel is written in three distinct parts – covering the in-world history from the first attack up to just before the movie.

Each part tells a complete episode of that history, dipping selectively in and out of character backstories and sometimes focusing on new characters who aren't necessarily in the movie. The idea is to expand the universe and explore how this war has affected not only our heroes, but the world beyond the film. That said, Stacker Pentecost's (Idris Elba) origin will figure into all three parts, tracking his journey to high-ranking commander.

Annihilator
Morrison brings to the pages a thrilling story starring wild-living screenwriter Ray Spass, who has one last chance to save his career as he struggles to write a new studio tent-pole movie, Annihilator.

The film centers around the incredible adventures of Max Nomax; a sci-fi rebel anti-hero who’s condemned to a haunted prison orbiting a supermassive black hole, following an epic struggle against the all-knowing, all–powerful artificial life form VADA and his squad of deadly Annihilators. Found guilty of the Greatest Crime in History, Nomax has vowed to clear his name by discovering a Cure for Death itself and resurrecting his lost love.

But with deadlines looming and a recently-diagnosed brain tumor, Spass is running out of time and inspiration – until the real Max Nomax mysteriously appears in the world of 21st century Los Angeles with no memory of how he got there, only a terrifying warning of imminent destruction and a mission for Ray Spass.

Ray’s tumor is the key—it contains all the information of Nomax’s adventures, uploaded into Ray’s head before Nomax made his great escape. Now, Ray has to finish his screenplay in order to get the information out of his head and shrink the tumor. Nomax needs Ray to finish the screenplay so he can remember how to defeat VADA and ultimately save the universe from extinction – if Makro, the unstoppable rogue Annihilator, doesn’t kill get to them first, that is.

But who or what is Max Nomax really? And why is it the more we learn, the less we want to know? A heart-stopping suspense thriller. A love story. An impossible mystery. A tale of vengeance and defiance – bargains and consequences - life and death – good and evil.

Get Lost in a Good Fantasy Series Part 8: The Sarantine Mosaic

$

Bestselling author Guy Gavriel Kay got his start in writing in an unusual way, working more as an editor with Christopher Tolkien on the numerous volumes of Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth material J R. R. Tolkien wrote during his lifetime.

His first published series was the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy, which falls into a lot of the pitfalls of a stereotypical fantasy series with some weak characters.

But with the release of Tigana in 1991, he began a journey through many worlds and stories with many more books, which are all kind of linked. Tigana is a quasi-medieval Italy, but with alternate, with numerous fantasy elements.

A Song for Arbonne is alternate-medieval France. The Lions of Al-Rassan is sort of medieval Spain. And The Last Light of the Sun is from the time of the Vikings, in a story you likely haven't read about before.

And then there's The Sarantine Mosaic, a duology written about the time of the great city of Byzantium with its powerful king and queen, and the chariot races, and the magic that existed there.

These two books, Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors, do an excellent job of showing Kay at his best blending historical fact and fiction with fantasy and easily transport the reader to another world.

In 2010, Guy Gavriel Kay released Under Heaven, a Chinese historical fiction novel with fantasy elements set in the 8th century Tang Dynasty, and plans to release River of Stars in 2013 set approximately 350-400 years after Under Heaven.

Sailing to Sarantium

Sailing to Sarantium, the first in the two-part Sarantine Mosaic, is a picturesque and moving adventure of ancient Byzantium, with Guy Gavriel Kay writing at his best.

This is the story of a talented mosaicist, Crispin, who has lost his wife and children to the plague and is looking for something new in his life.  He is delivered this opportunity, a chance to create something, a project in the distant and renowned city of Sarantium.

As this is the first part of a two-book series, Kay spends a healthy amount of time exploring his main character and exploring the world he has created, which is a lot like that of the ancient world, but also a wonderful fabrication of Kay’s imagination.  Crispin experiences much on his journey to Sarantium: the meeting of an alchemist, a slave girl, and an epiphany where he perhaps comes face to face with an ancient god.  The events serve to change Crispin’s outlook on life, but also to let the reader in on his experiences and ideology.

In Sarantium, he tries to keep to himself and his work, but finds himself drawn into political factions, the emperor’s court, and becomes part of the many who seemingly worship the hippodrome and the great chariot races, whose riders are seen as heroes.

Sailing to Sarantium is a great example of Kay’s creative writing, his strong and interesting characters, and his imagined but quite believable world.

Lord of Emperors

In the concluding volume of the Sarantine Mosaic, after Sailing to Sarantium, we continue where we left off: talented mosaicist Crispin, now Imperial Mosaicist to Valerius II, is working on a magnificent dome for the Emperor and Empress of Sarantium (a fantasy version of ancient Byzantium and Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora).

But because this is a large, complicated city, and Crispin is now an important person, he finds himself unavoidably inveigled in plots and conspiracies, as the Emperor plans for a war in Crispin’s homeland.  Then a new character enters the play, Rustem of Kerkakek, a physician from the eastern desert kingdom of Bassania; a reward for saving his emperor’s life.

Now Sarantium has a host of unusual citizens, while Crispin keeps his allies together – a slave girl and mistress, the exiled queen of Antae, Gisel, and this new and enigmatic character, Rustem.

Guy Gavriel Kay continues to build on the momentum and creativity of Sailing to Sarantium, but also introduces new and interesting characters, as well as creating new plotlines that weren’t visible in the first book.

He does what is key to a sequel: building on the story already established, but at the same time taking the reader down new and undiscovered avenues.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S8E12: Bulletproof

Someone has shot John Jones, our favorite Martian, and Clark needs to go undercover to find out the truth.  Guess that whole getting by without your powers thing may not have been your best idea after all.

Meanwhile, Tess finds out a dirty little secret…and it’s about her.

The Random:
1. Jesus, is Lana still around?  Every time she comes back, Lois goes away.  It’s like they can’t stand being in the same place, though on Lois’ end, I guess I can understand why.

2. Another piece from the comic world comes calling as we get our first full appearance of Dr. Emil Hamilton—not to be confused with crazy old Dr. Steven Hamilton that used to assist Lex early on—a doctor who will serve as a physician to the Justice League and their associates.

3. Even as a former cop, this group of police makes my skin crawl.  Sure, we watched out for one another, but these guys are just so far off the damn reservation it’s scary.  But, still, you have to feel for Danny, having watched his partner killed and trying to get justice while dealing with the peer pressure of his colleagues.  Either way, framing Clark was a pretty dick thing to do.

Danny boy, you’ve chosen poorly…

The Awesome:
1. Tess practices martial arts while reciting philosophical creeds.  Why?  Because she’s that awesome, that’s why.  And her little face off with Lana about who’s hiding what about Lex gave a little bite to this one.

2. The revelation that Tess has secretly been Lex’s eyes and ears thanks to electronic implants, even beyond her knowledge, just shows how far Lex’s plans really went and makes Tess question her role in everything.

3. Clark and Ollie do a nice job of setting Danny back on the right path, and the reward is sweeter with his last name turning out to be Turpin, as in Dan Turpin, the hardnosed super cop that goes on to become instrumental in the Metropolis Police Department along with Maggie Sawyer.  Nicely played.

“Wow, this is pretty jacked up, even for Lex.”

The WTF?!:
1. John Jones was shot by a fellow cop, so Clark needs a way onto the police force.  Given the way they obviously have no background checks, as evidenced by them having a Martian with no past on Earth as a detective, of course Chloe can fake an identity for him on her way out the door.  I feel safer already.

2. Seriously, why is Lana a ninja?  I mean, really, why?  Tess trains daily and she’s the heiress of Lex’s empire and Lana owns her like she’s an old lady.  Enough, already, stop the ride, I want to get off.

3. Clark’s name is cleared with the police, but you still have to figure that these guys don’t look like the type to drop grudges and they know his real name so shouldn’t that be cause for some sort of concern, especially given as how he’s going to be a big name reporter for a major media outlet?  Nah, not important.

Apparently, getting onto the MPD is as simple as putting on a uniform
and bringing a letter saying you’re cool.  No wonder the town’s a mess.

Comic News: ONI PRESS Announces A Smorgasbord of TItles

Today at New York Comic-Con, Oni Press, the acclaimed independent publisher of creator-owned comics, announced a veritable smorgasbord of new projects bound for print and the web.

“I can't believe how much amazing stuff we're announcing at this show,” exclaimed Oni Press editor in chief James Lucas Jones. “We've got a new oversized hardcover graphic novel from Joe Harris and Adam Pollina, a pair of new series from writer Cullen Bunn, and a host of new projects involved in our 2013 reenvisioning of OniPress.com.”

Kicking the panel off, long-time collaborators Joe Harris and Adam Pollina announced their new deluxe graphic novel WARS IN TOYLAND. Darkly inspired by the classic story of BABES IN TOYLAND, this new book looks at the once wondrous and beautiful Toyland after the rise of the teddy dictator, Roxbury. After Matthew's brother and playmate, Alex, disappears, young Matthew finds himself carried into Toyland by his own loyal toy soldiers. Only Matthew soon learns that Alex has been here, too – and is now being held captive by Roxbury. Leading an attack on the teddy bear's fortress, Matthew never considers that his brother might be beyond saving.

"Ever since I was a kid watching LAUREL & HARDY on Thanksgiving Day, my demented thoughts have turned to wooden soldiers making war on one another," commented Harris.  "WARS IN TOYLAND is a story we've been looking to tell for a long, long time. It's a dark fantasy about the things we throw away, the things we can't let go of and growing up, in a broad sense, even though it really sucks sometimes."

"WARS IN TOYLAND is as close to my heart as any story I have ever drawn," added Pollina. "As a young child I would spend hours dividing my toys into armies and leading them in some glorious battle.  This graphic novel is heavily inspired by those childhood memories. I know I feel I'm still finding the courage to face the challenges in my life and win the battles ahead of me.  And this book is an expression of that struggle."

Joining Harris & Pollina for the project are finisher Brent McCarthy and colorist Nolan Woodard.

"Joe and Adam really delivered an outstanding book and the work from Brent and Nolan just helps it shine that much more," concluded Jones. "The oversized, landscape format really makes their work a thing to behold.

Next, Oni Press marketing mastermind Tom Shimmin threw the mic to Cullen Bunn for a pair of big reveals.

Since the very first issue of THE SIXTH GUN, readers have clamored for more information about General Hume’s horsemen. And now the story can be told. What happened to the horsemen after their master died? The answers can be found the in February debuting series THE SIXTH GUN: SONS OF THE GUN. Written by Bunn & SIXTH GUN artist / co-creator Brian Hurtt, illustrated by Brian Churilla (THE SECRET HISTORY OF D.B. COOPER) and colored by Bill Crabtree, each issue features a look at a different member of Hume's ghastly gang.

But Bunn wasn't done there! Following SONS OF THE GUN February debut, comes HELHEIM--a new viking horror series from Bunn, fan-favorite artist Joëlle Jones and colorist Nick Filardi.

“Once the threshold of Helheim is crossed, not even gods can escape.”

During the age of the Vikings, savage wild men and dark creatures beset a small settlement. A brave war party stands as guardians of the helpless villagers, but they are no match for the horrors rising up around them. One of the warriors, a young hero named Rikard, will pay the ultimate price in battle…

But his fight is far from over. Resurrected by an evil witch out for vengeance, Rikard is brought back as a pawn in her bloody quest. But can his warrior soul ever be contained? A gothic horror story of witchcraft, night creatures, and the undead.

Can't wait until March? Attendees of the panel didn't have to as Oni Press gave out special black-and-white preview editions of the upcoming series. Additional copies were made available for sale at the Oni Press booth.

"Working with collaborators like Brian Hurtt, Brian Churilla, and Joëlle Jones reminds me just how lucky I am to be working in comics and working with Oni Press," concluded Bunn. "I'm writing stories I genuinely love and I'm partnering with some of the best visual storytellers in the business."

"Cullen, Joëlle, and Brians Hurtt & Churilla, not to mention Misters Crabtree & Filardi, make my job a joy," added SIXTH GUN and HELHEIM editor Charlie Chu. "These folks are creating some of the most engaging characters and thrilling action in all of comics and I get a front row seat.

But possibly the biggest announcement for Oni Press was still yet to come.

The publisher announced the January debut of a totally new OniPress.com that will transform the website from a marketing resource for its print titles into a full-fledged content hub with comic updates five days a week.

"We saw the transformation of the music industry over the last decade and we see comics experiencing a comparable metamorphosis," stated Publisher Joe Nozemack. "We believe there's opportunities for new models to emerge alongside the existing ones giving both established and new readers comics that engage and entertain."

"We love comics and we want to share that love with as many people as possible," added editor in chief James Lucas Jones. "The web is the perfect tool to help us deliver great comics to a global audience."

The new OniPress.com will initially offer two new serials a week, along side three additional serials pulled from the publisher's 15-years worth of backlist material.

The first of these new series, A BOY & A GIRL by Jamie S. Rich & Natalie Nourigat and BUZZ by Ananth Panagariya & Tessa Stone were initially teased at Comic-Con International in July and now Oni Press is ready to reveal more about these exciting new graphic novels debuting on the web in January.

Have you ever met the girl of your dreams, only to have her disappear into a crowd?

A BOY & A GIRL explores a future where real people are rapidly being supplanted by life-like androids, the need for that emotional connection can become even more desperate, and Travis will go to great lengths to find out where that amazing girl he met last night, Charley, lives, so that he can convince her to go on a date with him.

What Travis doesn't know yet is that it's Charley's last night in town, and she's in a mood to really tear things up. If they're going to go on a date, it's almost guaranteed to be one that neither of them will ever forget.

Jamie S. Rich writer of the hit MADMAN spin-off IT GIRL from Image Comics is joined by one of the fastest rising stars of independent comics, cartoonist Natalie Nourigat.

"What a great team! What a great comic!" exclaimed editor Jill Beaton. "Old Man Rich gets to return to the romance genre he mined so brilliantly in 12 REASONS WHY I LOVE HER in a fantastic futuristic world fully realized by the lovely Ms. Nourigat. The characters they've created for A BOY & A GIRL will draw you in and grab your heart."

"I'm thrilled to be joining Oni Press on yet another adventure," added Rich. "And even more excited to be working with such an exciting talent as Natalie."

BUZZ rounds out the brand new comics coming to OniPress.com this January. The comic follows new high school student Webster as he finds himself thrown into the highly competitive world of 1-on-1 spelling bees.

"As soon as Ananth described the concept of BUZZ to me, I knew it as a comic we had to publish," admitted James Lucas Jones. "When Tessa Stone came on board to draw it, I knew we had something s-p-e-c-i-a-l."

Webster's vast vocabulary throws a powerful punch as he trains for the biggest Bee of his life and a showdown with the most feared speller the world has ever known.

"Seeing Tessa's work on this book week after week has been absolutely amazing," concluded Panagariya. "I know readers will feel the same way during every week of our run at OniPress.com."

But it doesn't stop there! Oni Press also revealed details about the two new series debuting on OniPress.com when the second season debuts in April!

Wook-Jin Clark, artist of the graphic novel THE RETURN OF KING DOUG returns to Oni Press with a series all his own. MEGAGOGO is an American Shonen story featuring a super sentai style team operating out of Atlanta, Georgia. Once upon a time, they were heroes, but it’s been 10 years since the last battle that left the city and the team in ruins. Now, they must assemble a new lineup that can reverse the city's scorn and defeat the kaiju monsters and amped up bigots that threaten the metropolis they call home!

"Giant Mech battles! Car chases! KKK robots! Wooo!" promised Clark. "Sit on your porch swing, sip on some sweet tea, fire up your tablet or laptop and get ready for MEGAGOGO!"

Joining Clark on OniPress.com in April, is DOWN! SET! FIGHT! from writers Chris Sims & Chad Bowers (AwesomeHospital.com) and artist Scott Kowalchuk (Image Comics' THE INTREPIDS).

In DOWN SET FIGHT, "Fearless" Chuck Fairlane was one of the fastest rising stars in professional football, but his career came to a screeching halt when he was expelled from game after causing the biggest team-on-team brawl in the history of sports. Today, Chuck's a teacher and football coach at Darius Rucker High School in Columbia, South Carolina, and is more than content in his new life. But when costumed mascots begin attacking him for seemingly no reason, Chuck soon discovers that even though he’s put the past behind him, it’s not always so easy to move on.

"This is one of the craziest comics in the history of crazy comics," concluded editor Charlie Chu. "This is SUPERMAN VS. MUHAMMAD ALI level nuts. But none of the insanity or hilarity would matter if Chuck weren't such a fully realized character. This is a story about never being able to truly outrun your past, but always having the option to punch it square in the face."

And with that, the most information-packed panel in the history of Oni Press came to a close, as does this press release.

About Oni Press

Founded in 1997, Oni Press, Inc. has become one of the comic industry’s most well-respected independent comic publishers--Revolutionizing Comics by focusing on  character and story-driven creator-owned work in a variety of genres and formats.

It’s not the costumes, which put more pressure on me than Christmas ever could.

No, it’s the fact that it’s suddenly ok to talk about horror movies to anyone.

In fact, people BEG me to talk about horror movies during October.

Zombie movies hold a special place in my heart and, while the recent upsurge can be annoying to some, I'm secretly pretty happy about it.

After all, what better creature is there to serve as biting social commentary?

As Mr. Romero says, "They are us."

Oh, and there's the gut-churning gore.

There are those out there who will tell you that there are no good zombie movies that don’t have the word “Romero” attached to them. Au contrare, my little ones. There are PLENTY of good zombie movies. Maybe no award winners, but you may have heard of a little movie called 28 Days Later that (most) everyone loved. (Arguably not REALLY a zombie movie, but whatever. For me it still counts.)

Here are just a few that you may have missed over the years. Romero’s are still the best, but these are worth a look or six.

GRAPES OF DEATH (1978)
Directed by Jean Rollin
Written by Jean Rollin/Jean-Pierre Bouyxou/Christian Meunier

Never has there been a more desolate zombie film made in France.

A young woman travelling the French countryside with a friend ends up alone in wine country with people infected with some kind of wine-transmitted virus chasing after her. Loneliness and sadness saturate the film all the way through to the final shot. Sure, some of the dialogue is kind of contrived (the conversation about the war is seriously only there to tell us that there’s a nuclear power plant and a military base nearby), but the mood of the film just never lets up. These people have never been truly happy and neither has the land. Jean Rollin is no Romero and this could be his only good film (his other films mainly exist for soft-core boobie shots and this film doesn’t skimp on the nudity), but it is a great movie that doesn’t just revel in the gore…although it has some pretty good puss-filled wounds throughout.

TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD (1972)
Directed by Amando de Ossorio
Written by Amando de Ossorio/Jesus Navarro Carrion

Shortly after Night Of The Living Dead came out in 1968, everyone wanted to get in on the zombie action. Spain made the genre their own by bringing the Knights Templar into the proceedings. Tombs starts off with a young girl jumping off of a train to run away from her former best friend and the man she’s interested in because it looks like they’re about to hook up. Unfortunately, she runs right into the titular knights. When her two friends come looking for her all hell breaks loose.

The characters are stupid and unsympathetic and there isn’t a lot of gore to be seen, but there is something highly disturbing about these zombies, and it’s not just the super-creepy chanted score. They don’t move very fast at all and they’re not nearly as disgusting as a Romero ghoul, but these rotting skeletons with beards really do get under your skin as the chomp on these awful people. The ending manages to be both silly and chilling at the same time. The three sequels get progressively more graphic and decrease in quality, but they’re still a lot of fun in a slowly disturbing way.

Beware the American version that, for some reason, recasts the knights as apes.

THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE (aka, LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE) (1974)
Directed by Jorge Grau
Written by Sandro Continenza/Marcello Coscia/Juan Cobos/Miguel Rubio

For the other two 70s movies I’ve made some excuses. “Yeah, they’re not really good movies, but they’re great zombie movies!” Well, no such excuses are needed for The Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue. If you like your zombie movies dark, gory and with a side of social commentary, this movie is for you.

Two young people on the English countryside stumble upon a small town where some new nuclear farming equipment is bringing the dead back to life. (Pesticides are bad.) The cops, of course, don’t believe them, actually believing that they are the ones killing the townsfolk. (The older generation has no faith in the younger generation, thinking they’re all on drugs or worse, Satanists.)

One of the few truly good Video Nasties, this is one of the five or so best non-Romero zombie movies. It also has a nice and nihilistic ending that will stay with you for days.

DANCE OF THE DEAD (2008)
Directed by Gregg Bishop
Written by Joe Ballarini

Just when you think that good, low-budget zombie movies were a thing of the past, Dance Of The Dead comes along. It’s the story of a group of high school kids who find out that the nuclear power plant nearby is causing the dead to rise from their graves to chomp on some brains. What better place to get those brains than at the prom that none of these kids happens to be going to? Can they save the town?

Dance Of The Dead is one of those “fun” zombie movies that not everyone can get into. It’s a comedy, to be sure, but, like Shaun Of The Dead before it, it doesn’t skimp on the gore. It also doesn’t fall into the traps that a lot of teen comedies fall into. These kids are all sympathetic in their own ways and none of them are worthless.

Keep in mind: Dance Of The Dead has fast AND slow zombies. Strangely enough, it makes sense and works really well.

Oh yeah, and no one is safe…ever. The movie also answers the question, “What happens when two zombies fall in love?”

HAROLD’S GOING STIFF (2011)
Written and directed by Keith Wright

Mockumentaries are overdone these days. Everybody’s made one about subjects far and wide. Some are farcical, some are serious, many are terrible.

Luckily, Harold’s Going Stiff is quite good.

Apparently a new disease is taking over the men of rural England: ORD, Onset Rigors Disease.  It basically causes your joints to stiffen up. Eventually, though, you start to lose your brain, too, and you become violent. Harold was the first to contract the disease and he has somehow been in stage one for years. His nurse, Penny, is a young woman who has been finding it hard to find a good man. Harold is her only true friend and is like a grandfather to her.

Unlike a lot of zombie movies, Harold’s Going Stiff is kind of a heartbreaker. It’s funny and could be counted as a comedy, but the soul of the film is these two characters being lonely and finding out just how much they need each other. Not a lot of gore (in face, none that I can remember), just a lot of heart.

Unfortunately, this movie seems to only be available on a UK import DVD right now. Hopefully we can get them to release it in America. It’s one of the better zombie flicks made in the last 10 years.

Jeremy Renner's Comedy INGENIOUS Set For Theatrical Release, Indie Hit Reaches Funding Goal On Kickstarter

Film fans pledge to support Jeremy Renner's first comedy in 20 years. Thanks to the brilliance of crowdfunding super-site Kickstarter.com, Arriba Films will independently distribute their film INGENIOUS without any Hollywood studio backing them up

Academy Award Nominee Jeremy Renner, known for his tough guy roles in "The Hurt Locker" and "The Town" is getting rave reviews for his first comedy role in twenty years, in the critically acclaimed indie hit INGENIOUS.

Based on a true story, INGENIOUS follows Matt (Dallas Roberts - "The Grey") and a slick salesman (Renner) who hit rock bottom before coming up with a product that becomes a world-wide phenomenon.

"But the movie isn't about the product", said Brian Neufang a producer with Arriba Films. "It's about perseverance and not letting go of your dreams."

INGENIOUS has been in fifteen name festivals around the world and has won Best Picture and Best Director awards. The reviews from the festival have been overwhelmingly positive.

"A terrific yarn, a uniquely American movie. Renner and Roberts are sublimely cast, could become an indie success story."
Lael Lowenstein - VARIETY

"Great script and inspired performances."
Kim Voynar - MUSIC CITY NEWS

The movie has been in limbo for over two years waiting on finishing funds and Renner's increasing popularity. "We've had distribution offers from major distributors", Neufang said, "but mainly for limited LA and NY screenings followed by VOD. We feel this movie deserves a wider distribution. That's why we turned to Kickstarter, to raise money for our theatrical run ."

Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing crowdfunding platform where independent artists can connect with their audience and fans pledge money in return for exclusive rewards to support a project. If a project does not meet its financial goal, no money gets exchanged. There is no stated maximum for Kickstarter projects, so the more money raised, the wider its potential reach in the marketplace.

INGENIOUS has surpassed its funding goal of $48,000 with 3 days to go. Pledges will be accepted until the campaign ends on October 13, 2012. Rewards range from $10 for a digital download to $400 for a combination of perks including two tickets to a Premiere screening in either LA, New York, or Chicago.

The Rescuers / The Rescuers Down Under 35th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray review)

WDHE / Released August 21, 2012

One of the few highlights of Disney's animated releases of the Seventies, The Rescuers is a charming, entertaining feature with excellent voice work from Bob Newhart, Eva Gabor and Carol Burnett.  Based on the books by Margery Sharp, the film focuses on the adventures of Bernard (Newhart) and Miss Bianca (Gabor), two mice of the Rescue Aid Society search for a little girl kidnapped by unscrupulous treasure hunters.  Fantastic characters, an exciting story and a slightly darker tone from previous Disney features sets this film apart.  The sequel, The Rescuers Down Under, is serviceable and mildly entertaining, but can't compare to the original film.

With more slapstick, early integration of computer generated animation, more of an emphasis on celebrity voices and inconsistent design, The Rescuers Down Under is a far more dated film.  Extras include a deleted song, a 'Silly Symphony' short, a 1952 Academy Award winning Disney True-Life Adventure “Water Birds,” a featurette and a sing-a-long.  For older fans revisiting The Rescuers is truly a wonderful experience, with the film truly living up to the dangerous recollection of nostalgia; Younger fans will likely be happy to revisit both films and for the newest and youngest viewers both films are worth their time.  The Rescuers is a sometime forgotten Disney classic, but shouldn't be.  Having this and it's less engaging sequel are, however, worth every penny.  Highly recommended.
