POWER-UP With This Super Mario Guitar

In the last year or so I have seen some amazing theme guitars and ukeleles on the market, but this Super Mario guitar really kicks ass.

 I mean look at it:

How can you not get moist just staring at its glossy loveliness?

Think about it, I'm a chick so naturally I have thing for musicians, which means guitar players are gonna be worthy enough to part me from my panties, and then of course it has Mario on it, which, from a gamer girl stand point, is like simply the best video game character ever (besides Claire Redfield from Resident Evil).

Put those two things together and BAM! you have the makings of an evening that will most likely end with a police record and a vow of silence.

And yes, the guitar is expensive ($995) but the memories that you will have with a chick who is all about the Mario Guitarr as a result of you owning this glorious instrument is priceless.

I'm just saying.

ONE HOLE TO RULE THEM ALL: With Cloaxia Women Can Create One "Down There" Opening To Help Curb the Tide Of Male Confusion

Let's face it, with all the issues our girl parts are experiencing due to male political confusion over what goes where and what does what, wouldn't it just be easier for everyone if we could turn our vagina, urethra and anus into one hole?

After all, if one opening is good enough for the birds why shouldn't we follow what is obviously Nature's Intelligent Design and medically change ours to be more pelican-like?

It just makes good biological sense.

I'm sure that those men in Washington who are creating laws that will affect our bodies will appreciate the simplicity of ONE GIANT HOLE.

WATCH KERNEL PANIC, A Sci-Fi Short Film That Will Make You Pray For Tech Support

$

Sci-fi tends to either be completely amazing or super cheesy, and lets just say I was prepared to err on the side of Velveeta over this short flick called Kernel Panic, but alas, I dug it...seriously.

The premise is this:

Death or download!

Brianna Weald. An unadventurous adventurer, all round loner and a captain without a ship.... Lost in space, captured in a gravity well and trapped inside a malfunctioning space suit, our consummate profanitist finds herself burying old grievances, shedding her suspicions and ejecting her reservations in order to save her life.

For on a hard drive, far far away, within the depths of the Heart Corporation's planet sized data-centres, lurks the newly improved saviour-ware that is VERSION 10.

It's time for an upgrade...

Its full of vulgarity (which is a nice added bonus) and the visual effects are pretty good as well, which means that you don't feel like you're watching a SYFY movie filled with gravy blood and former 80s pop stars.

So watch and enjoy.

ADORABLY CUTE ROBOT LUGGAGE Will Make Getting Your Kid's Crap From Point A to Point B A Whole Lot Easier

I'm going to be an Aunt again in a few months and yes, I'm excited for another testosterone-filled boy child to demand things from me that I will be unable to afford.

But this incredibly cute robot roller bag might just be the best thing I can get him (for now) that is easy on the wallet and cool enough to be carried by his Auntie when that bastard gets tired.

First off, the wheels light up in red, blue and green when rolling along the ground so at least I'll know where my nephew is when I take him out to a bar, second, the interior has enough room for a couple stuffed animals, a few coloring books and a box of crayons, and, of course, space for Aunt Ebeth's mini bar, and third, when the little tyke is all tuckered out from copious amounts of maraschino cherry juice and olives and the thumping bass of a bad DJ, I can easily turn the rolling bag into a backpack and hike it up on my back so I can carry the unconscious body of my nephew back to his parents.

How cool is that?

You can order this parcel of wonderfulness HERE (the bag will cost around $49.00), I know your nephews/nieces/kids will love it.

LONDON MOVIE THEATER Employs Faceless Spandex-Clad Ninjas To Tell Loudmouths to "Shut the F**k Up

$

There is nothing more upsetting than paying $12 for a movie ticket only to have your viewing experience interrupted by loud people, a phone ringing, or, goddammit, someone texting.

Oh sure, you could punch that asshole in the face but then you'd be the one in handcuffs missing the movie and what good is that?

I guess you can't do anything...

But wait, in London at the Prince Charles Cinema, the theater has decided enough is enough and simply hired Ninjas to take care of the problem so as to make it clear to the person who can't stop playing Draw Something that now is not the time to light up the room with their 1000 watt phone. The ninjas move through the room undetected, swaddled in head-to-toe spandex and then, when a perpetrator is found, they pounce, leaving that person with urine-soaked pants and feeling weird inside, as if they have been violated.

Here's what one jerkface had to say about the experience:

"I normally hate noisy people in cinemas, but I got a call from my friend just as the movie started and thought I could get away with taking it. The last thing I expected was two completely blacked-out people suddenly appearing by our seats and give me and my mates a warning to shut up. It was actually pretty terrifying at first, but then I realised it was a bit of a laugh and a great way to make it clear what I was doing was having an impact on those around me. It certainly made me hang up and shut up for the rest of the film."[I Watch Stuff]

Personally I think it's a great way to get people to quiet down so I can happily stuff myself on over-priced popcorn.

But then again, I always did have a thing about faceless people in spandex.

HELLO MY BABY, HELLO MY HONEY: Half-Life Head Crab Likes To Give You A Show Before Eating Your Brain...How Nice of It.

It seems that we are moving toward a musical way of life these days what with the popularity of shows like GLEE, Smash and whatever else has characters randomly belting out a tune for no apparent reason.

So naturally, Half-Life would like to jump on the sing-a-long bandwagon by allowing their Head Crab monster to perform a nice little tune before gnawing on the noggin of a potential victim.

I kinda think it feels a little more upsetting when it sings to you first before sucking out your brain, but that's just me.

Damning with Faint Praise: FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS

$

This 2011 rom-com is 71% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, where a middling 66% of the audience report liking it.

It has a 63 score at Metacritic which is generally favorable.

Synopsis
Dylan Harper (Justin Timberlake) is a graphic designer at a “blog” that got over six million hits last month – and he just broke up with his girlfriend.

Jamie Rellis (Mila Kunis) is a headhunter (she prefers “recruiter”) with a contract to get GQ magazine a new graphic designer. She just broke up with her boyfriend

He’s emotionally unavailable. She’s emotionally damaged. From the meet-cute, you know how things will end.

Verdict
Friends with Benefits isn’t as clever as it wants to be, but its likeable stars take us on an enjoyable journey.

Romantic comedies need the same things that all stories do: A character, in a context, with a conflict; and a strong three-act story arc.

Friends with Benefits (FwB) has that.

There’s the meeting and the developing friendship in Act I, the “benefits” relationship in Act II ends with the expected break-up, and Act III is all about learning lessons and getting back together.

In addition, FwB has an excellent supporting cast in Richard Jenkins, Jenna Elfman, Woody Harrelson, and Patricia Clarkson.

Will Gluck, who directed and produced, also did Fired Up! and Easy A, so he knows what he’s doing.

What’s critical in a rom-com is that we have to like the main characters and we have to want them to be together.

I honestly can’t think of a single Justin Timberlake song and I wouldn’t recognize an N'Sync song if I heard it.

That said, I have seen him act in Alpha Dog, Southland Tales, Black Snake Moan, The Social Network, and Bad Teacher (In Time is on my Netflix list). There’s just no denying that the man has talent, and it’s on display here. His Dylan Harper is imminently likable from the opening moments of the movie.

I watched the first seasons of That 70s Show, so I knew Mila Kunis. I’ve watched her transition to more adult roles (let's face it: she was the best thing about Max Payne), and she’s terrific. Her daring, intelligent, wounded Jamie Rellis is beautiful and likeable all on her own.

Together, they have great chemistry.

The movie makes sure that we know they are genuinely good people. They have friends. They have positive work relationships with co-workers. They have families. We see them treat other people with respect and decency.

Perhaps most interestingly, the script makes a point of gradually revealing to us how the characters go to their unavailable, or damaged, states. We (the audience) learn it as the characters learn about each other.

When Jamie’s mother, Lorna (Patricia Clarkson), bursts into their lives, we learn that Jamie never knew her father and is worried that she’ll wind up like her mother, moving from relationship to relationship without ever finding a real connection. We learn, when Dylan does, why Jamie might be emotionally damaged.

When Dylan invites Jamie to come to Los Angeles for a July 4th weekend with his family, we meet his sister Annie (Jenna Elfman), and his dad (Richard Jenkins), and learn that Dylan’s mother abandoned him when he was very young. He grew up needing a speech therapist and a math tutor, and now is watching his dad slip away mentally as Alzheimer’s sinks its fangs into Mr. Harper’s mind. We learn, when Jamie does, why Dylan can be emotionally unavailable.

What sets FwB apart is its self-awareness. The characters exist in a world where rom-coms exist. They have seen them. They tease each other about acting like characters from specific sitcoms and rom-coms.

However, that’s also FwB’s weakness. The movie just isn’t as clever as it wants to be.

As I intimated when I described the three-act story arc, FwB’s story is predictable. All the gender roles are standard. It's up to Dylan to sweep Jamie off her feet with "some Prince Charming shit." It’s the actors and the characters that make the movie lively and energetic.

Just don’t expect any surprises.

Although the script makes sure that every shotgun goes off by the end of the third act, and I say that as a compliment, you know how the movie is going to end. FwB is far less surprising and fresh than Gluck’s previous directorial effort, Easy A.

Overall
Sometimes you want a non-challenging comedy that pushes the right buttons.

For me, Friends with Benefits filled that niche.

Just don’t expect it to do more.

IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR: Welcome to the Sam Adams Octoberfest Milkshake At Red Robin

Like those of you who wait patiently for the gelatinous meat bi-product known as the McRib, I too have a season in which my gluttonous desires peak.

And that season is known as Harvest Beer Season....mmmmmm......Harvest Beer Season.

Basically it is filled with beers flavored in the scents, colors and tastes of fall which, when poured down my throat and into my belly, causes me to be a more pliable human being who is less apt to kill you (interestingly , it is also my husband's favorite time of year).

And this concoction of heaven from Red Robin mixes the tantalizing taste of Sam Adams Octoberfest brew (which combines the beauty of fucking toffee and caramel with five roasts of malt) with VANILLA ICE CREAM AND CARAMEL GOO.

Oh sweet Jeebus, a grown up milkshake just for me.

This delicious tribute to the season of candy corn and fallen leaves only lasts until November 11th so I suggest you get yourself a designated driver and toss back several of these ASAP.

If you need me I'll be in a booth in the back...just look for all the empty pint glasses.

GODZILLA VS MEGALON: JET JAGUAR Finally Sees The U.S.A. on DVD!

$

Despite my hyperbole with the title for this week's Mystery Box column, there is actually a great cause for celebration to the many of us obsessive Godzilla fans.

Finally, an official stateside DVD release for one of the more controversially loved and disliked (and in many cases both) Godzilla films in his entire canon,Godzilla vs. Megalon has appeared.

This past August, after years of subsisting on via poor quality VHS versions, sad expensive bootlegs and Japanese only DVD copies, then after another long, long wait from the time the rumors started, cover art finally appeared, and there were endless promises and pushed back release dates, the prize finally appeared, arriving in my mail.

At long last, for the very first time we have the company Media Blasters' Toho approved, official release of Godzilla vs. Megalon as a DVD you can hold in your hand and pop into your player.

Front and back cover for Media Blasters' DVD release of Godzilla vs. Megalon

Godzilla vs. Megalon (Japan, 1973) stands alongside Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) as one of Godzilla's more misunderstood, most laughed at (Mystery Science 3000) and in many cases most derided films (well, maybe All Monsters Attack wins the award for most derided). It is a part of the early run of Godzilla films (called the Shōwa period in the filmography) which runs from the first Godzilla film Gojira in 1954 to Terror of Mechagodzilla in 1977.

In its original Japanese released version, the first Godzilla film Gojira, is universally acclaimed as a serious classic of cinema, and for the most part a very grim affair.

Darkly thought provoking, it deals with the effects of the post WWII atomic blast and its aftermath.  After four more Godzilla films were made, all of which kept things for the most part still serious, Toho Studios, creators and owners of the Godzilla franchise, gave Godzilla and his subsequent films more of a lighthearted style, turning Godzilla into a hero that the kids could rally behind.

Toho Kaiju, 1954-1975 (The Showa Era)        Thanks to Sal Cipriano for image compilation

When dealing with Kaiju (a Japanese word, translated as "strange beast" but usually connoting "giant monsters," it is associated with Japanese Tokusatsu film and TV entertainment, i.e. using a lot of special effects, superheroes etc.)

I have always found that a certain acceptance of goofiness and an ability to overlook, or actually embrace, the special effect limitations inherent in the 60's, 70's and even the 80's are what makes the genre so wonderfully entertaining and charming. There was no C.G.I. and instead elaborate small scale models built on giant sets were constructed of cities, vehicles and structures while actors in rubber-based monster suits crashed, stomped and smashed their way through them, the explosion of miniatures and much melting of plastic was involved while things like laser blasts were created photographically in post production.

The technicians used imagination and the limits of the technology available, sometimes at a very costly expense, to the fullest.

The Japanese poster for the film

Godzilla vs. Megalon began life not as a Godzilla film at all, but as a solo film for what was hoped would become a new franchise character for Toho, the humanoid robot Jet Jaguar.

Jet Jaguar

At the time in Japan, robots were the new craze, with characters such as Ultraman, Inframan, Spectreman and Mazinger Z all popular with the kids. Toho held a contest asking kids to come up with a new superhero. The winning drawing was for a robot called Red Alert, who was then renamed Jet Jaguar and who would get his own film. He even got a theme song written for him. After some thought however, it was decided that Jet Jaguar could probably not sustain a feature film by himself and Godzilla (plus one of the previous Godzilla film nemesis' Gigan) were brought in as stars to prop up the story and rope in more viewers.

I won't run through the plot of the film here, hoping that instead you will seek out the DVD for yourself, but I will say that Jet Jaguar has huge amounts of mesmerizing screen appeal.

Though Godzilla really takes more of a backseat to him in the film, there is a grand bonding between the two. There is plenty of really fun giant monster fighting, some great action sequences, lots of lurid color (although not as much as the psychedelically crazed Godzilla vs. Hedorah) and in the long run, Jet Jaguar is the sort of robot that every kid would love to call a best friend— hooray!

Megalon

The monster Megalon easily stands out as one of my favorites (also one of the weirder ones, and that's saying a lot) of all the villainous monsters in Godzilla films—if he doesn't top the list he at least places in the top four. His methods of attack are pretty special...

Upon its release, Godzilla vs. Megalon did not do as well as the previous Godzilla films in Japan, however when it finally was released in the U.S. in 1976, oddly it was a huge success and smashed box office records over previous Godzilla films. At the time it was marketed heavily to compete with Dino De Laurentiis' King Kong remake and many kids flocked to the theaters to see the film, causing it to be one of the better known and cherished of the Godzilla 70's films.
Godzilla vs. Megalon compete with King Kong on this poster
from the American ad campaign for the film

Even decades later, there is a giant shadow created by the film. I know someone who told me he was only allowed to have two films (presumably on VHS) when he was a kid in the early 90's, and they were Godzilla vs. Gigan and Godzilla vs. Megalon.

Different pinback buttons were issued as promos to promote the film, this one features Gigan.

So big a deal was Godzilla vs. Megalon, that for its television debut in 1977, it was given a very high profile prime time slot on NBC with a big ad campaign and a host, John Belushi, who was a fast rising star of the acclaimed hit show Saturday Night Live (still called NBC's Saturday Night). Belushi, wearing a Godzilla suit, introduced the film and appeared during commercial bumper spots. Fake boulders were thrown at him throughout the bits. Of course, being on network television, the butchers at NBC chopped the hell out of the film to make it fit a one hour viewing slot, still it was the first and only Godzilla film to ever air on a U.S. prime time network.

For this DVD release the licensee Media Blasters had to wrangle at length Kaiju Big Battle-style with the mighty Godzilla mitt that is Toho in order to make a release happen.

It took ages and several Atomic breath blasts later, and it was not an easy fight. This release has absolutely no frills, and not even a trailer for the film, however I love the print quality and the sound, you can choose between the original Japanese language track with English subtitles or the very goofy English dub, and best of all, I can now proudly add it to all my other Godzilla DVD releases.

Why no Blu-ray?

Well the good news is that Toho has compiled a vast amount of material on Godzilla vs. Megalon that they wanted to keep working on and all of it should be made available on a future Blu-ray edition (fingers crossed) as extra features, but the stipulation was to only allow Media Blasters to first release this no frills edition for now.

There are only two Godzilla films that have not seen a U.S. DVD release: The Return of Godzilla (U.S. title, Godzilla 1985 from 1984) and Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989).

With word of the new American Godzilla film in production and slated for a 2014 release things could once again look promising for Godzilla's exposure to new audiences and the delivering of more unseen treasures for his already loyal fans. As far as it being any good, I still wait and will believe it when I see it, but I doubt it would be as bad as the previous American monstrosity. At least this new film has the involvement of the once maligned (you'll never direct Godzilla again!) director of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Yoshimitsu Banno as a co-producer.

The monsters of Godzilla vs. Megalon take a break between filming

Until then, I have Godzilla vs. Megalon.

A film that, though it stands as one of the giants in the Godzilla filmography, is still often under-appreciated, maligned and sadly looked at as a huge write off of a joke or a kiddies film (which I guess I have to admit it is). Still, it is some of the purest entertainment out there, and its existence only adds to the appeal of all things Godzilla—a bizarre journey on a path of strange twists and turns made by his giant monster feet.

Long live Jet Jaguar, Seatopia, Gigan, Megalon and long live Godzilla!

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Star Wars: Darth Vader and The Ghost Prison #5 of 5 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Haden Blackman
Art: Agustin Alessio
Cover: Dave Wilkins
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.50

The closing installment of The Ghost Prison series shows readers the Darth Vader you have been waiting to see.

I’m talking about the “I find your lack of faith disturbing” force choking, light saber slashing, “all too easy” ruthless badass we all know and love from the original trilogy.

None of the whiny broken-hearted stuff will be found here.

Haden Blackman's script is loaded with full out excitement as Laurita Tohm’s story comes full circle.

There are some other fun moments in the book as well, such as Tarkin confronting Gentis and his insurgents. They get into a heated argument that is capped off with the ruthless Moff telling Gentis that his cadets would have survived if they were better trained. Gentis says he was given caskets in exchange for his sons and Trakin replies “You will see them again soon.”

The art of Agustin Alessio beautifully captures the look of fright on Gentis’ face as Vader turns up the volume on his Force powers to wipe out those who oppose the Emperor. This will go down as the best Star Wars story of the year released by Dark Horse and everyone involved should be proud of their efforts.

All five issues gave you something different to sink your teeth into while building anticipation for the next chapter.

Red Hood and The Outlaws #0
Writer: Scott Lobdell
Art: Dwayne Turner
Cover: Kenneth Rocafort
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

Some things change while others stay the same as it relates to the life and times of Jason Todd.

For example, Jason didn’t meet Batman for the first time while stealing the tires off the Bat-Mobile.

Instead, Batman catches Jason stealing from Leslie Thompkins’s clinic. Batman is about to arrest him until Leslie stops him and whispers something in his ear that stops him in his tracks and takes the troubled youth under his wing.

We fast forward to the end of the book where the Joker puts in his two cents about how he has influenced everything that has happened in Jason Todd’s life from childhood to superhero to death.

It is a fascinating concept but the execution left a lot to be desired.

In a way, Scott Lobdell has simplified Jason Todd’s backstory while changing some of the things we are familiar with.

After all, we are living in a new universe.

Spider-Men #5
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Sara Pichelli
Colors: Justin Ponsor
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

The charming tale of when Peter met Miles comes to a close, and guess what?

Peter approves of the 13 year old web slinger.

Of course, that’s not all that happens in this instant classic team up story.

Mysterio of 616 Earth will remain in the Ultimate Universe for the foreseeable future. Brian Michael Bendis weaves a grand finale that will have a lasting effect on all things Spider-Man. Sara Pichelli’s work is top notch as always and Justin Ponsor’s coloring is the icing on the cake. The ingenuity of Bendis’ script is to be admired at the subtlety of certain character's actions that heavily suggest this story is only over in the numerical sense.

If subtlety is not your thing, then the ending is anything but and the possible ramifications of it are endless.

Justice League #0
Writer: Geoff Johns
Art: Gary Frank & Ethan Van Sciver
Colors: Brad Anderson & Hi-Fi
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.99

Geoff Johns treats us to a Justice League comic book with the actual Justice League in it.

That is ok though because it’s all about Shazam. This was the right move for this zero issue because we already got the League’s backstory in previous books.

Also, the Shazam backstories have been more entertaining than anything to do with our super team as of late.

So, Billy Batson enters The Rock of Eternity and meets the wizard, who doesn’t think too highly of him, and obtains these these magical powers, and a red suit to boot. Seeing Billy work out the kinks with his new powers was fun and illustrated why I prefer comics over plain old books.

We were also treated to some more of Pandora’s backstory which is a continuation of the book that was released during Free Comic Book Day.

For those who don’t know who she is, she is the lady in the pink hood who appeared in the last issue of Flashpoint right before the DC Universe was changed. She has been appearing in a “Where’s Waldo” format in various comics throughout the past year.

This was all done to set up the big “Trinity War” event that will take place next summer.

The Walking Dead #102
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Art: Charlie Adlard & Cliff Rathburn
Letters: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $2.99

What happens when you are running low on bullets?

Make some more, of course and that is what this issue is all about.

I’m lying of course, as there is a lot more to the story that meets the eye.

Rick is mentally drained. He realizes he can’t beat Negan and is sick of all the fighting. Peace is the only option he sees and everyone around him can’t believe their leader is throwing up the white flag.

This is a frustrating read in an emotional sense because you can’t believe this is the same Rick Grimes that we have journeyed with for over one hundred issues of The Walking Dead.

Will he be able to crawl out of his slump or is this Rick 2.0?

Only time will tell.

Daredevil #18
Writer: Mark Waid
Art: Chris Samnee
Colors: Javier Rodriguez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

Mark Waid must have it out for Matt Murdock.

Or, perhaps, the Man Without Fear is finally going crazy.

These questions and more are what fans have in store for them when reading this issue.

Foggy “fired” Matt several issues ago when he found the remains of “Battlin” Jack Murdock in his office.

As a long time Daredevil fan, I always wondered when Foggy would say enough is enough as it relates to Matt. They are best friends but one person can only take so much and they have a legal practice to worry about.

Speaking of their practice, its clear Foggy wants to distance himself from Matt as fast as possible when Murdock’s name is removed or crossed off of everything from the glass on doors to office stationery.

In other news, Daredevil tangles with some mob thugs in relation to a case he is working on. Things begin to happen that don’t make sense and it made me wonder if I was going just as crazy.

While I’m not, the ending sheds light on Matt’s mental state and should make for some interesting stories ahead.

*****
Here are some titles that didn't make the list but may tickle your fancy

Ghost #0 (Dark Horse Comics)
Some ghost hunters that actually found a real ghost. Needs a little work but great first effort.

Ultimate Spider-Man #15 (Marvel Comics)
Miles Morales found someone to reproduce the fluid needed to use the web shooters Aunt May gave him. The answer? You might want to check it out and see for yourself.

Blue Beetle #0 (DC Comics)
The blue guy slowed down a little bit after the first few issue but this story about the scarab's origins just might bring me back on the regular.

Revival #3 (Image Comics)
Great pacing to a story that evolves and gets a little more interesting as things move along. People coming back from the dead in a small farm town is a normal occurrence.

Thor #20 (Marvel Comics)
Once again, Loki tricks Thor and this time, throws him in the sea of fire. Thor should know better by now.

Which one do you think I called, "one of my favorite releases this year"?

Battleship

Universal / Released August 28th, 2012

After the first twenty minutes, my hopes actually went up.  Good character work from Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgård.  Liam Neeson, Bar Refaeli and Rhianna all seemed to have something to do.

And then in just a moment, the film came crashing down in a computer generated visual assault that was unrelenting.

Mass destruction, mayhem and almost incomprehensible action sequences make this dull, overwhelmingly anarchic visual effects reel a waste of the cast and director Peter Berg's talent.  What's enormously disappointing is that there was potential in making Battleship a big, dumb, fun popcorn movie.  Instead, we got a bloated, tedious and unimaginative exercise that all but ignores characterization and humor.  The Blu-ray does feature stunning picture and sound and extras include several featurettes, an alternate previsualization ending, All-Acess with director Berg and Second Screen feature.  Battleship is frustrating because of it's wasted potential.  What could have been a hit, turned out to be a significant miss.

The Wrath of God
Warner Archive / Released September 11, 2012

An eclectic cast featuring Robert Mitchum, Frank Langella, Rita Hayworth, John Colicos, Victor Buono and Gregory Sierra headline this unusual dark comedy that doesn't really know what it wants to be.

Set somewhere in Central America in the early 1920s, The Wrath of God features Mitchum as a renegade priest on a mission to free hostages in exchange for their assistance in toppling a military dictator.  I hadn't heard of this film previously, and although it is a bit of a curiosity, it's overly complicated plot detracts from the action and well-scripted dialogue.  The quality is a bit disappointing, even for the MOD Warner Archive.  There's a fair amount of noise and scratches, but most annoyingly a flicker that occurs through the first half or so of the film.  Mitchum gives a solid performance as usual and Western fans might find this one to be a worthwhile watch.  Mildly recommended.

Five Man Army

Warner Archive / Released September 11, 2012

Co-scripted by Italian horror auteur Dario Argento might be reason enough for many people to check out this Spaghetti Western.  Peter Graves plays the Dutchmen who assembles a team to pull rob a train containing half a million dollars in gold during the Mexican revolution.  Backed by a score by the legendary Ennio Morricone, Five Man Army is a tremendously entertaining film that only becomes more so as the final act reveals twists and tension.  The only extra is a trailer.  Featuring nothing more than a serviceable cast and direction, Five Man Army is nevertheless, a surprise in it's economical execution and really is a must see for any fan of Spaghetti westerns or fans of Argento.  Recommended.

Snow White & The Huntsman

Universal / Released September 11, 2012

Visually gorgeous, this reimagining of the classic Grimm fairy tale depicts Snow White as a warrior fighting the armies of the evil queen.

The only problem?

Snow White is horribly miscast. Despite the dark tone, fans of the story will find the film features all of the iconic elements including the poisoned apple, the dwarves, a prince, the huntsman and the evil queen.  The Blu-ray is stunning, but Kristen Stewart as the title character is hardly the fairest of them all (especially next to evil queen Charlize Theron.  In fact, Stewart's glassy eyed stare and flat delivery makes Snow the least interesting character in the film, and as a result, splints the film around her.  Perhaps a stronger actress like Emma Watson or Jennifer Lawrence might have elevated the material.

Director Rupert Sanders does a great job visually, but unfortunately the film's pacing and execution seem disjointed.  Theron delivers the best performance in the film, while Chris Hemsworth grunts his way through as the Huntsman.  The dwarves ensemble, which includes Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost and Toby Jones, provide some of the much needed comic relief in the film.  Extras include an extended edition, commentary, featurettes, and more.  Snow White & The Huntsman isn't a bad film by any means.  It's ambitious and full of interesting ideas and concepts.  It's just a shame that the title character is delivered in a fairly dull performance.  Recommended.

The Terminator Anthology

Warner (Best Buy Exclusive) / Released August 28, 2012

“The machines rose from the ashes of the nuclear fire. Their war to exterminate mankind had raged for decades, but the final battle would not be fought in the future. It would be fought here, in our present. Tonight…”

So begins The Terminator Saga which is comprised on the four films found in this set (and a television series that took place in an alternate reality).

Directed by James Cameron, Jonathan Mostow and McG, The Terminator Anthology is a must have for every Cinegeek's collection.  The best two films are the first two, The Terminator and Terminator II: Judgement Day, which star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton and were both directed by James Cameron.

In The Terminator, soldier Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) arrives from the future to protect Sarah Connor (Hamilton)'s unborn son, John, from a cybernetic killing machine, the T-800 (Schwarzenegger). Terminator 2: Judgement Day picks up the story with an adolescent John Connor who teams up with a reprogrammed T-800 to battle a new threat, the T-1000.  Jonathan Mostow's Terminator 3 features an adult John Connor (Nick Stahl) living on the fringe of society who once again teams with a T-800 against a new threat the Terminatrix.  Finally, Terminator: Salvation features a John Connor (Christian Bale) post Judgement Day who encounters a teenaged Kyle Reese for the first time (Anton Yelchin) and the formation of both Skynet and the T-800s.

Although my initial reactions to both Terminator 3 and Terminator: Salvation were that of disappointment, revisiting them I found them both far more entertaining than I had remembered them.  Extras on the set include commentaries, featurettes, a director's cut of Terminator: Salvation, and more.  Quality is mixed, depending on the film.  It's important to also note that this set collects the previously released versions of these films.  If you have them, there's nothing new.  But, if you don't, it's a pretty nice way to get the entire series in one fell swoop until the inevitable new remastered edition appears at some point.  Highly recommended.

The Carol Burnett Show: Carol's Favorites

Time/Life Home Video / Released September 25, 2012

Pop culture for me is often best connected by the power of nostalgia.  There are so many things that I remember from growing up in the Seventies that left an indelible impression on me.

One of those is The Carol Burnett Show and it was truly a wonderful experience watching this set and fleshing out the memories of this wonderful series.  The Carol Burnett Show was a television staple in the Seventies; a variety show anchored by talent, charm, and some very silly moments.  Like a combination of MAD Magazine, Saturday Night Live and vaudeville.

Airing for eleven seasons and 278 episodes, this amazing DVD set includes 16 uncut episodes chosen by Carol herself.  With a regular ensemble that included Carol, Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner, these episodes include guest appearances from such personalities as Dinah Shore, Steve Martin, Betty White, Roddy McDowell, The Jackson 5, Maggie Smith, Shirley MacLaine, Ken Berry, Carl Reiner, Joanne Woodward, Joan River, Vincent Price, Pearl Bailey, Rock Hudson, Nancy Walker, Jim Nabors, Jean Stapleton and Phil Silvers.

In addition to sketches (frequently interrupted by laughter), and music, Carol spent a portion of each show interacting with the audience.  Her chemistry is astounding and transcends gender, age, race; it's truly remarkable to see.  Extras are plentiful and include cast reunions, featurettes, interviews, and Carol's appearance on The Gary Moore Show where Carol did her trademark Tarzan yell on television for the first time.  The sound across the entire set is great and the video quality varies, but not enough to dissuade you from picking this up.

The Carol Burnett Show: Carol's Favorites is a must have and belongs in the library of anyone who watched the show when it first aired and is unquestionably one of my favorite releases this year.  Highest recommendation.

Look Out World, Here Comes BLOODSUCKA JONES!

I've been waiting for this one for some time, and now having seen the trailer, I'm not disappointed.
David's new girlfriend is a vampire and it is her destiny to kill him her first love but Bloodsucka Jones 70's style vampire hunter, goofball, general bad ass and his sexy sidekick Vanessa help David a small group of idiots fight an army of douchebag vampires a horror comedy with graphic violence, nudity, kids cursing, muscle cars, vampires, crushed heads, gallons of bloods, screaming, biting, and general awesomeness.
And while I'm not sure if it's supposed to be set in the Seventies or if Bloodsucka himself is the throwback, I'm hoping that someone gives filmmakers Preston Gant and Justin Armao a budget and let them work their magic on a bigger scale.  So many films are so worried about being cult films out of the gate or let the moniker "grindhouse" serve as an excuse for shoddy storytelling, I'm really happy to see that this film seems to maintain the rare, but always appreciate tongue-in-cheek humor.

After the jump check out the one sheet and the trailer for Bloodsucka Jones!

12th ANNUAL SCREAMFEST SCREENS
THE FACTORY STARRING
JOHN CUSACK AND “DEXTER’S” JENNIFER CARPENTER

Screamfest Announces First Wave of Gory Good Titles

Screamfest®, the preeminent horror festival in the country, and what the LA Weekly calls “the best place to get a jump on tomorrow’s cult hits” kicks off its 12th annual event in Los Angeles on October 12 through October 21 at LA Live Regal Cinemas (1000 W. Olympic Blvd. LA, CA). This year’s films include Morgan O’Neill’s THE FACTORY starring John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter and Mae Whitman.

First Wave Title Highlights at Screamfest 2012 (more titles to be added shortly):

The Factory (US) – Directed by Morgan O’Neill, starring John Cusack (1408, The Raven) and Jennifer Carpenter (“Dexter,” Quarantine and The Exorcism Of Emily Rose) and Mae Whitman (“Parenthood,” “Arrested Development”). Present. Buffalo. The unforgiving winter. A killer roams the streets, abducting women on cold, quiet nights. All prostitutes, missing persons with no one to miss them. He leaves behind no traces, no clues; nothing. Detective Mike Fletcher (John Cusack) is the one cop on the force bent on bringing him to justice. Mike sees the tragedy in all of this: that these poor women are alone in life, and in death. They have no one to stand up for them – no one except him.

On-Air (Germany) World Premiere - A man (Markus Knuefken) runs a pirate radio station “Nighthawk“ from the basement of his house. Every Saturday night he goes “On Air” as Doc Rock. One night, a serial killer called “The Night-Slasher” (Charles Rettinghaus) calls the show, and Doc has to stop him from killing his next victim. The struggle for survival is ON…AIR.

True Love – (Italy) US Premiere - On the surface, Kate and Jack are happy.  But like everyone, they carry secrets that neither is prepared to reveal.  After their wedding, they awake from a deep sleep, each alone in a sealed room with no doors or windows - only images projected on the walls and a monitor with two buttons:  a "yes" and a "no.” As the horror of their situation unfolds, surveillance films showing their life together appear on the wall, while the monitor starts asking terrifying questions.  It soon becomes apparent that a bizarre test of their relationship is underway, and the secrets revealed lead them deeper and deeper into what could not just destroy their love, but threaten their lives.

Would You Rather – (US) starring Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Brittany Snow (Prom Night), Eddie Steeples (“My Name Is Earl,” I Know Who Killed Me). Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman agrees to compete in a deadly game of "Would You Rather," hosted by a sadistic aristocrat.

Fear of Water (Canada) – Rosalie Richard is found savagely raped and murdered at the foot of a cliff in the Magdalen Islands. The sordid crime wreaks havoc on the quiet life of Sergeant André Surprenant of the local Sûreté du Québec detachment. While the shy Surprenant starts the hunt for the killer, his life is in shambles as his marriage is crumbling, his teenage daughter rejects him, his psychologist is trying to help him overcome his phobias, and the Sûreté is trying to push him aside by bringing in another officer to lead the investigation.

Resolution (US) – Michael is committed to getting his best friend Chris to sober up and put his life back on track. But what begins as an attempt to save his friend’s life quickly takes an unexpected turn as the two friends confront personal demons, the consequences of past actions, and forces beyond their control. Expertly balancing dark humor, heart, and thrills, Resolution is an utterly unique cinematic experience that defies genre classification.

Thale (Norway) – Two crime scene cleaners discover a mythical tailed, female creature in a concealed cellar. She never utters a word, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together - she’s been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface.  “A rare thing, at times haunting, atmospheric, hilarious, violent and wholly beautiful.”  - Badass Digest

American Mary (Canada) – The story follows medical student, Mary Mason, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries, which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called 'freakish' clientele.

Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal - (Canada) - Lars Olafssen, once a young celebrity in the art world, is slipping away fast into the land of has-beens. His long-time art dealer, Ronny, is now an ungracefully aging hipster who desperately wants his meal ticket back. But Lars refuses to paint. His creativity comes at too high a cost - his inspiration is carnage - blood, guts and limbs. Not surprisingly, this lead to a dreadful breakdown in the past. Nevertheless, an eager Ronny arranges a teaching job for Lars at an art school in a small Canadian town in the middle of nowhere. It's a "therapeutic" measure for Lars - a means to conquer his need to paint in the "safety" of a country retreat... That is, until Eddie comes into his life.

Crawlspace - (Australia) From producers of Wolf Creek and Red Hill. A group of elite soldiers infiltrate Australia's top secret underground military compound. They quickly discover all is not as it seems and the facility is a testing ground for something far more sinister.

“Screamfest features the best of young, innovative and up-and-coming artists in the cinema of fantasy and horror,” says Director Wes Craven (the Scream franchise, A Nightmare On Elm Street).  “It scares me, and I’m Wes Craven!”

Inception Media Group Proudly Presents
Robert Conrad Double Feature
Get Down With Two Totally Awesome ’70s Crime Heist Capers

Live a Little, Steal a Lot (aka Murph the Surf) and Sudden Death Available Together in DVD Two-Pack Oct. 16th
Prepare to go retro for a double dose of action, mayhem and intrigue with the Robert Conrad Double Feature, breaking onto DVD Oct. 16 from Inception Media Group.

Classic TV icon of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, Robert Conrad (Black Sheep Squadron, The Wild Wild West, Hawaiian Eye) – and frequent sidekick Don Stroud (License to Kill, The Amityville Horror, The Buddy Holly Story, Joe Kidd) – are at their macho best in these action-packed feature films from the mod ’70s.

Live a Little, Steal A Lot aka Murph the Surf (1975): Based on the true story of the daring 1964 theft of the J.P. Morgan jewel collection from New York’s American Museum of Natural History.  Called the “Greatest Jewel Heist of the 20th Century,” the robbers nabbed 22 precious gems, including the 563.35-carat Star of India sapphire, the 100.32-carat de Long ruby and the 16.25-carat Eagle diamond (never recovered) … stones so famous they would be impossible to sell. Directed by Marvin Chomsky (Evel Knievel and TV’s The Wild Wild West, Star Trek, Gunsmoke, Roots), with one of the original thieves serving as a film advisor. Also stars Burt Young (the Rocky movies) and Donna Mills (TV’s Knots Landing).

Sudden Death (1977):  When Ed Neilson’s entire family is viciously murdered, he pleads with
retired CIA operative Duke Smith (Conrad) to investigate. He refuses, but relents after Neilson
too meets an explosive death. Deception, international intrigue and a ruthless “syndicate of businessmen” intent on raping a South Pacific Islands nation of its resources keep the pace fast.
But when the executives hire a treacherous assassin (Stroud), the two are thrown head-to-head in
a predestined match of cunning, wit and brute force. Only one will survive. For the other … it’s Sudden Death. Directed by Eddie Romero (The Twilight People) on location in the Philippines.

Robert Conrad Double Feature is presented in widescreen with an aspect ratio of 16x9 (1.85:1) and digital stereo 2.0.

BARRICADE AVAILABLE ON DVD SEPTEMBER 25TH

For seasoned actor Eric McCormack, the role of Terrance Shade was one of the most challenging of his career. Appearing in virtually every scene, it was both a physically and emotionally demanding role for McCormack. As a busy psychiatrist, Terrance is struggling to adjust to life as a widowed father whose main concern is the safety and well-being of his young children. The children, as well, must come to grips with having lost their principal caretaker, a fun-loving and devoted mother and, at the same time, get closer to a father they’ve never truly bonded with.

“One of the interesting things about Barricade,” notes director Andrew Currie, “is you are never really sure what’s real. What he’s seeing, at a certain point, he realizes is possibly not quite true. So, that becomes really exciting.”

A holiday in the mountains is an opportunity for the Shade family to accept their tragic loss and start anew. Little do they know they’ll all be tested in unimaginable ways. Apart from their fun-filled first night at the cabin and a snowball fight the following morning, the family experiences events that would frighten the most fearless. The harrowing ordeal they are faced with, and ultimately survive, forces Terrance to overcome his fears and truly understand what it means to be a parent.
