Video Game Wrap-up : HALO 4, TRANSFORMERS, DISHONORED, RE6, MARVEL VS CAPCOM

In this weeks gaming round-up we have new Resident Evil 6 footage, a release date for Halo 4 along with some new pics, the trailer for Bethesda's newest game, first footage from Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and a new iOS game from Capcom that feature some of Marvel's greatest.

This fall is going to be jam packed with new games that look to be excellent. Resident Evil 6 and Halo 4 will be coming out a month apart, along the latest Transformers game which is now just announced for a fall release, no date yet. This week we got a look at all of those games and now you can see the best of video games news right here instead of reading through the boring stuff.

NEW RESIDENT EVIL 6 TRAILER

First up is Capcom. At their yearly event called Captivate, there was a brand new trailer for Resident Evil 6. The earlier looks at the zombie shooter didn't have much in the way of a story, but this one did and lays out the plot of what the next installment in the franchise will hold. In addition to showing some new footage from the game, it was also announced that the launch date has been pushed up to October 2nd instead of November 20th. Here's the trailer for you. Watch it now.

HALO 4 RELEASE DATE AND PHOTOS

Halo 4 finally has a release date and it's November 6th, 2012. Now that we know when the next entry into one of the biggest video game franchises is, just what will it be about?

Microsoft along with producer 343 Industries said that the next game will be the start of a brand new trilogy with Master Chief. As you may now, last time we say the hero he was in hibernation and headed towards a new planet. Called The Forerunner Trilogy, the game will pick up when he wakes up.

In addition to the single player story, the studios are also working on a completely new multiplayer system along with episodic gameplay that will work its way into the single player story. Check out a few pictures from the game which show a new look for the brutes, the HUD and the new look of the Reds and Blues. There are also a lot of new pictures over at AllGamesBeta

So remember to not forget, Halo 4. November 6.

BETHESDA UNVEILS DISHONORED

Dishonored is the latest game from developer Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks. The new game for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC is about a "supernatural assassin driven by revenge." The cinematic trailer for the upcoming game was release the past week.

In the game you framed for murder after once having the trusted title of bodyguard of the Empress. With an oppressive government, odd technology and "dark forces," your task is to use your supernatural abilities along with weapons and gadgets to "creatively eliminate your targets."

In the trailer you'll see that the game looks to be a bit of a cross between multiple games that I say looks like a blend of Assassins Creed and Bioshock. The difference with this game is the RPG element that gives you the ability to choose how you will control your character considering that every action has a consequence. Each mission will play differently with the choices that are made by the player.

MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2 FOR THE IPHONE/IPOD TOUCH

Capcom also had another game they wanted to talk about and that is Marvle Vs. Capcom 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch. I think it's one of the best fighting games there is and it will be interesting to see how it is ported to the idevices.

With 56 characters ranging from classics like Ryu and Wolverine to Iron Man and Mega Man (no relation). This version of the game also incorporates a new "Variable System" which is basically a new form of tag-team so you can have two team members fighting on your side. The team fighting element also is essential for the Team Hyper Combo.

The promised action-packed arcade fighting experience will hit the app store this week on April 25th for the iPhone and iPod touch.

FIRST LOOK AT GRIMLOCK IN TRANSFORMERS:FALL OF CYBERTRON

I don't know about you guys, but I'm starting to look forward to this new Transformers game. With this new footage from Kotaku, the game is looking like it will be an interesting first-person brawler. Grimlock is the star of this new footage which shows the Dinobot leader in fighting form and his dino form.

High Moon Studios is making the game which is scheduled for an August release. Creative director Matt Tieger talks a bit about the character and what it will be like to fight as him.

The story jumps between Autobots and Decepticons, allowing the player to experience both sides of the story which takes place on the Transformers' home planet of Cybertron. I would embed the video, but Kotaku doesn't want me to, so I will send you there to check out the awesome looking game footage.

Jason Bourne is back in a brand new way. Starring Jeremy Renner instead of Matt Damon. This is not a reboot or a recasting of the franchise, but instead shows us that "there was never just one." This international trailer from Japan shows a bit more footage, not much though.

Also starring Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, and Albert Finney, The Bourne Legacy is slated for release on August 3 this year.

SILENT NIGHT Will Have A Loud Remake

Of all the remakes being made right now, I'm guessing that Silent Night wasn't on your list of possibilities. Well now Steven C. Miller will be direct a remake with Malcolm McDowell starring.

Tracking board reports that Miller will have McDowell starring along with Ellen Wong, Lisa Marie, Brendan Fehr, and Jamie Kennedy.  The original story is about an abused and deranged teenager that dresses up as Santa Clause and starts killing people.

Originally directed by Charles E. Sellier Jr., it was written by Jayson Rothwell. Miller has credits in films like The Aggression Scale and Automaton Transfusion and also directed TV projects like Scream of the Banshee and a series called Chinese Guys.

Here is the trailer from the original

WB's Next Comic Book Movie Is LOBO

Lobo is coming to the silver screen with a new director attached to rewrite the script.

Variety reports that Brad Peyton, director of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, has signed on with Warner Bros. to direct and rewrite the story. Based on the DC Comics series about an alien "interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter," Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman and Adrew Rona will be producing.

At the moment it's unknown where the story is headed, but likely it will have the classic origin storytelling starting that will go to a different arc that happens later in the comic-book series. I only say that because it's been the recent trend with comic book movies. It will be interesting to see where they take the character. What do you want to see in a Lobo movie?

The Broadcasters Have Started Making Pickup Orders For Next Season

$

Development season is now officially on and all the big broadcasters are looking to turn their new pilot episodes into popular shows. Here's what's going on with some of the shows.

Variety reported on the 2012-13 season recently talking about what shows would be scheduled when and who would most likely get those top primetime spots. NBC has given the greenlight to their first comedy called Go On. In addition to some unscripted shows, the network is also looking at premiering a new show around August during the Olympics

Go On is a single camera comedy with Matthew Perry starring as a "sportscaster trying to recover from a personal loss with the help of group therapy. Julie White, Suzy Nakamura, Laura Benanti, Allison Miller and Khary Payton are set to co-star in the 13-episode season written by Scott Silveri from Friends.

NBC also has 1600 Penn and Friday Night Dinners in the running for pick-up along with unscripted shows like Stars Earn Stripes, Howie Mandel's White Elephant and Ready for Love. While these show are in the running, there are also a few shows that have not delivered pilots yet and could easily make it on to the show next season.

CBS has two big name projects Ralph Lamb and Elementary lined up and they are getting together a group of writers for the two dramas. Lamb is the 1960's Vegas show that has Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis and Jason O'Mara attached. Elementary is a take on Sherlock Holmes that has Jonny Lee Miller set to play Holmes and Lucy Liu signed up for the role of Watson.

The CW has promising pilots with Arrow and The Carrie Diaries along with The Selection, Cult, and First Cut. In addition to these shows they also have their Beauty and the Beast project along with J.J. Abrams' project Shelter. The last two project were filmed late and it's unknown how they will fit into the schedule if they move forward.

Fox doesn't really have any big projects set up other than Mastermind with Kevin Bason and the comedy Rebounding.

ABC is bringing back some big names from TV including Sarah Chalke, Judy Greer, Reba McEntire and Lily Tomlin. The four comedies are the most likely to see a pickup from the network. Chalke will be staring in the longest title of the season How to Live With Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life. McEntire and Tomlin will be starring together in Malibu Country and Greer will star in her own show titled American Judy.

These are just the shows that have seen pilots and are frontrunners for pickup when it comes to getting a full season. There are many others that are still being made and could be in contention if they move up production or another show isn't good enough.

It's been twenty-two years, but if you ask most people, they are familiar with the title Friday Night Lights, whether referring to the bestselling book by Buzz Bissinger or the popular TV show and movie of the same name.  Bissinger has now published an official sequel, titled After Friday Night Lights, in ebook format only.

It's now official there is no Pulitzer Prize for Fiction this year, as while the fiction jurors selected three titles, the 18-member board could not unanimously decide on a winner.  There has naturally been quite a bit of backlash over this from a number of sources.

Sony Wants JADEN SMITH To Star In BOY NOBODY

Sony is looking at acquiring the rights to the novel Boy Nobody with the plan to have Jaden Smith starring.

Variety reports that that the studio is looking at the Allen Sadoff novel about a teenage assassin with the intent to have Jaden Smith star in the lead role. The studio beat out 20th Century Fox for the project and now they are in final negotiations with Overbrook Entertainment.

While the first book in the planned trilogy has not even been released yet, Sony is hoping that with the success of darker teen stories like The Hunger Games, a story about a brainwashed teenage assassin will be big in the box office and could lead to a franchise.

Smith would play the character that Zadoff describes as "young soldier trained not to feel; who could function in every situation without fear, sympathy or anger; who could assassinate strangers and then walk away emotionally unscathed."

Smith is filming After Earth with his father and M. Night Shyamalan. His earlier credits include The Karate Kid and The Pursuit of Happyness. He can also be seen in the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

Damning with Faint Praise - THE PETRIFIED FOREST

$

0

This 1936 drama is 7.6 out of 10 on IMDB.

It’s 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (!!!) where 76% of the audience report liking it.

It’s also considered Humphrey Bogart’s break-out film role.

Synopsis
Alan Squier (Leslie Howard) hitchhikes around Depression-era America and comes to a diner/gas station in the Arizona desert, on the edge of the Petrified Forest. He strikes up a friendship with the owner’s daughter, Gabrielle Maple (Bette Davis), until he catches a ride with a wealthy couple and their chauffeur.

They stop to help some stranded motorists, who turn out to be the Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart) gang. The gang steals the wealthy couple’s car, and heads off toward the Petrified Forest. Alan Squier follows them on foot, cutting across the desert.

A sandstorm blows up, and the intellectual and the gangster hole up in the diner as the police close in…

Verdict
You can see beautiful digital transfers of it on DVD, and you should.

A central theme of The Petrified Forest is searching.

Alan Squier is searching for something to give his life meaning. At 43, Leslie Howard conveys an effete world-weariness effortlessly.

Duke Mantee is searching for a way out. In real life, Humphrey Bogart was searching for a way in. He knew very well that, at 37, this was his last chance in Hollywood. When Warner Brothers sent him a round-trip ticket, he knew just how little confidence the studio had in him.

Gabrielle Maple is searching for a life big enough to satisfy her. At 28, Bette Davis was beautiful and fairly vibrating with energy.

Boze Hertzlinger (Dick Foran) is searching for a way to get Gabrielle to love him.

Archie Mayo was a great choice for director. He’d started out directing the stage, and had 20 years directing in Hollywood when he turned this Broadway play into a film.

Lessons
Networking is critical.

When Warner Brothers made this movie, Leslie Howard was the natural choice to play Alan Squier. He played the role on stage, opposite Bogart as Duke Mantee. However, Warner Brothers wanted a known star, Edward G. Robinson, to play Duke Mantee. Leslie Howard stuck to his guns and insisted that Bogart get the role.

Thus was film history made.

According to legend, Edward G. Robinson was just as happy not to have to play another gangster.

Bogie never forgot what Leslie Howard did for him. Years after Howard’s death, Humphrey Bogart named his second child with Lauren Bacall “Leslie” after his friend.

I was discussing movie stars yesterday with cast and crew from Clark and Lex: Roommates (full disclosure: I have credit for additional writing), and I offered up an insight from Sweet Liberty. As director Bo Hodges, Saul Rubinek says that 80% of moviegoers are between the ages of 12 and 22.
“Well, this may sound silly to you, but kids go completely ape if you do three things in a picture: defy authority, destroy property, and take people's clothes off.”
That’s as true today as it was in 1986. As a result, we rarely get to see movies like The Petrified Forest anymore.

We also don’t get actors like Bogart anymore, and we’re not going to.

When tough guys like John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, and even Clint Eastwood were coming up, the movie-going audience was mostly adults.

It was okay for guys like Richard Boone to have fought in WWII (US Navy), gone to college (Stanford University, left before graduation), wildcatted the Oklahoma oilfields, tended bar, painted, wrote, and fought as professional boxers all before turning to acting.

Now who do we have?

Taylor Lautner? Cam Gigandet? Paul Walker?

We’ve got pretty boys with no life experience masquerading as tough, because Hollywood makes money by pleasing its audience.

I think Hollywood is missing out on something.

Just as music acts from the past enjoy a resurgence thanks to Pandora, iTunes, Turntable, and other music sources, so, too, are old movies and TV shows enjoying the benefit of retro tastes.

Thanks to YouTube and Netflix, among many others, young people today can watch movies like The Petrified Forest. Because of the way streaming and rental services provide recommendations based on past activity, young viewers can trace trails of recommendation back to classic sources.

The movie and TV studios see these streaming and rental services as rivals, when they should see them as pointers directing younger viewers to their past catalogues. Not to mention, giving the kinds of movies that the execs grew up with another chance at life and profitability.

If you want to learn more about Humphrey Bogart’s life and movies, and his continuing impact, check out Stefan Kanfer’s biography, Tough Without a Gun: The Life and Extraordinary Afterlife of Humphrey Bogart (2011, Knopf).

Lots of movies try to create tension by trapping disparate characters in a single room or building. Most of them fail to generate any interest.

This one succeeds, and the performances stand up today.

DR. JOHN'S LOCKED DOWN: Gumbo Songs In The Key of Black

$

0
Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack Jr. is better known to the world by his stage name, Dr. John.

Indeed, his aptly named persona (taken from a 19th century voodoo doctor) has always seemed to conjure up that of a sort of medicine show salesman, a traveling dealer in advice and pharmacological remedies—and not necessarily those of the snake oil variety—but more of the real kind of remedien that you can actually use.

Dr. John 2012 by Michael Wilson v blue

Like a mythical figure that has arisen from the swampy bayous of New Orleans, with all the influences that may entail, his actual life has so often crisscrossed with his fictitious personalities that a haziness seems to permeate his musical career.

However, finding your way through the mist is as rewarding a musical adventure as you'll likely ever have.

Elected to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, Dr. John's musical output is soul deep and extensive.

If one were to seek out all the sessions he has played on since the late '50s and into the late '60s  as "Mac" Rebennack, you might find little time for the albums he released later as Dr. John.

He has so many high points of quality, you can almost dip in anywhere along his chronological discography and come up with a gem.

Born in New Orleans' Lower Third Ward, LA in 1940, Mac concentrated as a guitarist leading several groups and performing with a host of others including Sam Cooke. He arranged horn charts, had a local hit instrumental single, "Storm Warning" and switched to the bass guitar after a gunshot incident damaged his left ring finger.

Heavily influenced by the legendary New Orleans pianist Professor Longhair, Mac settled on the piano as his main instrument and moved out to Los Angeles.

There, he performed as a session musician on a variety of albums by Sonny and CherCanned Heat and others, all the while assembling the group with which he would record his initial 1968 debut classic, Gris-Gris, under the name of Dr. John, The Night Tripper.

Gris-Gris with its creepy psychedelic concoction of semi-spoken word vocals, rhythm and blues, African percussion, female chanting, and slow brewed pacing, fit in perfectly and connected with audiences of the time to became an underground, non-charting success.

Along with the sound, there was the image Dr. John now used in concert, that of a trippy underworld, quasi Mardi Gras voodoo practitioner, an image no doubt borrowed heavily from Screamin' Jay Hawkins' outrageous onstage spookshow presentations.

Through many more albums over the years, including 1973's In The Right Place, that gave him the #9 hit single "Right Place Wrong Time," Gris-Gris still became the Dr. John album by which all his others would be compared and measured.

The Night Tripper name was eventually dropped and slowly more of his albums, though they often still had elements of his Gris-Gris style, changed, evolved and Dr. John would phase into more of an upfront singer-songwriter—a New Orleans Rhythm and Blues, Huey "Piano" Smith, boogie woogie, piano playing craftsman.

For Dan Auerbach, guitarist for the bestselling duo, The Black Keys, Dr. John left some unfinished business back in 1968, and when he traveled in to New Orleans in search of "Mac" he was determined to help the good Doctor get his "mojo" back.

Auerbach approached Dr. John in 2010 and told him he wanted to produce "the best record you've made in a long time." Dr. John, having researched The Black Keys with his children and liking what he heard, and after collaborating with Auerbach on the 2011 Bonnaroo  Jam, approved of the pair recording together.

Locked Down was produced by Auerbach who also played guitar, cherry-picked the session musicians and recorded the album at his Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, TN.

The cover photo of Dr. John on Locked Down might clue a listener in immediately, as it clearly depicts The Night Tripper, resplendent in all his tripped out finery via the colorful braided feathery headdress he's sporting.

Beginning with the title track of the same name, Locked Down creeps in with spooky sound effects, a sliding bass riff and an unreal groove that signals the presence of something special and extraordinary.

At times the album is distinctively Gris-Gris, with similar female backing vocals, shuffling percussion, and on "Eleggua" a swirling organ that shimmers in revealing a track that stirs up the murky voodoo jazz mix, including flute.

Yet Locked Down takes that things further out into a groovy, gritty, rock and soul fest not unlike the sound worlds inhabited by The Black Keys. It all makes perfect sense within the context of Dr. John's vocals and at times, scathing lyrical observations.

On "Revolution," Auerbach takes a snapping 4/4 soul beat and merges it with an Ethiopian Jazz sound that is not unlike the sounds of Daptone Records' instrumental act, The Budos Band—a sound that reoccurs on the track "You Lie."

Dr. John's plaintive vocals on the melancholy "My Children, My Angels" are as richly rewarding as are the pleas that he's offering the listener.

By ending with the album with the lifting sentiments of "God's Sure Good" there is an optimistic finale that might never have been possible on Gris-Gris. A way out of the murk and forward into the light.

Intro and outro loops that almost sound like they come from a Carl Stalling/Merrie Melodies cartoon soundtrack, infectiously repetitive guitar riffs, big band horn stabs, and some elegant gospel backup singing, all are just some of the production elements that create such a richly fulfilling musical gumbo.

You can really get a feeling that the players on this album locked in, had fun and felt the spirit of the material.

This is not to say that a listener shouldn't dip into any of Dr. John's post Gris-Gris albums to still enjoy an unmatched high quality and inimitable voice.

There are many wonderful Dr. John albums. There are ones that feature songs such as his signature tune "Iko Iko" or his hit "Right Place Wrong Time," so it became very unfair to constantly hope that one day he would revisit his Gris-Gris album, or come up with a comparably outstanding work.

That Gris-Gris sound however was one that Dr. John really never fully left behind, but he did distance himself from it enough so that now, with the unexpected kick in his musical ass from Dan Auerbach's mighty boot, we are blessed and able to partake of startlingly incredible work of sound art.

Let the album stand on its own merits or call it Gris-Gris: The Continued Adventures of The Night Tripper.

Either way, Locked Down is not only one of the greatest albums of this year—a many starred classic—it is one of Dr. John's best that will hold a place in the foreverlasting...

Ray Liotta is in a rut, wait I have that wrong. He's in The Rut, the gritty indie drama from Karyn Kusama.

According to Variety, Liotta will be the nemesis to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's hero. The focus of the movie is centered around Chloe Moretz's character a teen who tries to connect with her father (Morgan) by being adventurous, hunting deer, and looking for danger.

Written by Kevin Caruso the script is being described as a cross between The Deer Hunter, Winter's Bone and Whale Rider. Bob Nutley is the name of Liotta's character and he is a "hunting obsessed townie" who doesn't get along too well with Morgan's character.

Paul Feig is going in a slightly different direction after directing Bridesmaids. His next project is at Disney and is a comedy fantasy called Wish List.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Feig will be directing Reese Witherspoon who will play a woman who after many years finally has her childhood wished granted. While this would normally be a great thing, it completely screws up the life of Witherspoon's "career-oriented" character who is extremely organized.

Kung Fu Panda 2 writers Jonathan Aibel and Glen Berger will be rewriting the script which originally had a male lead when it was first set up in 2001. Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray from Mayhem Pictures will be producing the project.

STUDENTS SEND RUBBER CHICKEN INTO SPACE...Some People Will Do Anything For A Joke

I know that in the recent months a lot of people have been sending crap into space and filming it specifically for the YouTube hits, but this particular group of students from Bishop, California (who call themselves Earth to Sky) sent the rubber chicken named Camille into space to study solar storms.

Okay sure, they dressed her up as an astronaut (which is adorable) and put it on YouTube, but I stand by the scientific reasoning behind the experiment (even though it's just fun to see a rubber chicken wearing an oxygen helmet plummeting back to earth).

Now I don't know what data was retrieved from this experiment, but it sure is gonna look good on a college application.

SCHOOL KILLS CREATIVITY: A Superb Look at What is Wrong With Education Through White-Board Technology

Full Disclosure: I dropped out of college after a couple of years because all I wanted to do was to write and experience life on my terms.

And I have for the most part (finances not withstanding) which worked out great for me because the very thing that I am good at came not from English 101, but out of my love of reading and spending hours at my desk banging out essays, short stories and these very posts.

I learned by doing and perhaps that's what's wrong with the education system today. We are forgetting that learning involves critical and divergent thinking, not memorizing facts in order to pass a standardize test so that the school system can keep receiving money.

Maybe it's time to do things a bit differently.

But what do I know, I'm a college drop-out.
