‘South Park’ Loses Commentary Humor In A World Run By Trolls

$

South Park is turning 20, I am turning 37, and I think the thrill is gone.

I don’t think the show has changed, exactly.

South Park has always prided itself on its equal-opportunity comic menace. The show’s modus operandi is about profanely shredding anything it find pretentious and absurd across all ideologies, institutions, politics, and religions. The foul language, the scorched-earth satire, the at-times intricately elaborate outlandishness, the to-the-minute commentary. I’ve been here for all of it, and I’ve liked a lot of it.

I do think I have changed, though.

South Park long has espoused particular point of view, even though it loves playing off like it has none. Many episodes, beyond holding current events up to funhouse mirrors, place a moral controversy at the center. After all the insanity dies down, those episodes often wind up with Stan as its moral center and he pronounces what he has learned.

On one level, the South Park kids’ professed lessons learned is a parody of moralistic family TV. Which is fine, if you don’t take the show seriously. It is a comedy, after all. However, such outcomes also lend themselves to an overall message of “Everything and everyone is lame and full of shit, so whatever.”

Sure, it was funny as hell watching South Park turn Barack Obama’s win in the 2008 election into an Ocean’s Eleven-style heist caper with Obama and John McCain as teammates. Just as pure silliness. And then I start thinking about how it furthers this all-too-common take you see among your friends on Facebook: “Both candidates are the same, both parties are the same, and they’re just taking us all for a ride.”

Cue apathy, trolling, and performative cynicism.

So imagine taking in 20 years of this show through all of one’s formative years, of “Laugh at everything” and “Relax, it’s all absurd.”

Is it, though?

Perhaps it was easier to take in this worldview in a world where Beavis and Butt-Head was subversive, in which earnestness seemed so uncool, in which many Americans got their news from Nightline instead of The Daily Show. Maybe it was easier to laugh at everything when you couldn’t say shit on basic cable, or a president was impeached over a blowjob.

Maybe it’s easier, as Trey Parker and Matt Stone, to misguidedly joke about hate crime legislation and R. Kelly when they’ll never be victims of either hate crimes or Kelly. Maybe it’s easier to totally joke on the common misconception of “safe spaces” when they’re not dealing with oppression and feeling comfortable enough to speak on social justice issues without censure.

Maybe it’s easier to do an entire Jonas Brothers episode about boys slut-shaming girls, boys trying to manipulate girls into being sluts, corporate powers that both exploit girls’ sexualities while shaming said sexualities, but end it with Kenny’s girlfriend obliging to perform oral sex on him as a thank-you and undermining the episode’s prior stances, when none of these issues happen to them.

Maybe it’s harder now to joke about liberals’ pretentious responses in the name of acceptance and inclusivity, when we have a majority of people in America who just want to call people niggers and chinks and spics and fags because that’s “telling it like it is” and “political correctness” is lame.

Maybe it’s harder to troll liberals as the worst in a world where trolling them is now raison d’etre for an entire political party in control of the three branches of government and most statehouses.

And maybe it’s most difficult these days to rehash a tired election joke about choosing between a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich, when one of those choices was beyond abnormal. When one of those choices was Donald Trump, and his election both placed the status quo in Racist Kooktown and revealed how much America’s status quo has been Racist Kooktown all along.

South Park Season 20, happening during the 2016 presidential election, sagged under the weight of its serialized narrative and not knowing what to do with Trump, an ultimate troll dragging his campaign through dozens of horrible controversies.

Just the season before, South Park often crackled with uneasiness as it tried to reckon its place in a 21st-century America where irreverence is the norm. It was difficult to figure out where the show was going, but ultimately it meditated on whether the world still needed a South Park or was it show finally passé. Yet as it showed a gentrifying town of craft beer, Whole Foods and aggro PC bros, was South Park also saying the world was too soft for it?

We’ve got the President of the United States threatening to “totally destroy” North Korea on the floor of the United Nations. White supremacists march in Charlottesville’s streets with torches, riot police in St. Louis chant “whose streets, our streets” amid people protesting police brutality, the pall of Russia lays over the White House, and rampant deportation forces leave immigrant communities in fear while violating law after law.

The past eight months have felt like years, as we live day to day in chaos and awaken each morning in fear of what unhinged thing this unhinged president may say next. Ain’t nothing soft about all this.

And yet Trey Parker and Matt Stone say this season’s South Park will not mention Trump by name at all. But how could it, when they instead turned Mr. Garrison into Trump? Way to punt when this is the show that is supposed to fearlessly comment on everything and call it by its name.

Watching last week’s season premiere “White People Renovating Houses,” I kept asking myself what was this show trying to say? It took the frightening visage of white supremacists chanting “You will not replace us” and transferred it to Darryl and his working-class whites – ostensible Trump supporters – protesting automation and virtual assistants for killing their blue-collar jobs.

Is this subversive, by showing how the white working class is fighting the wrong enemy? On the other hand, doesn’t this further propagate the false narrative of Trump voters being working-class whites, when his support went across all income levels of whites?

The running joke of South Park’s rednecks waving the Confederate flag to solve all their problems draws some laughs. But in the real world, we know it wasn’t just uneducated slobs marching over those Confederate statues. Many of those marchers looked decidedly non-redneck.

Even though the rednecks are pitting themselves against technology taking their jobs (sorry, jerbs) rather than nonwhites, they still rally while using the same paraphernalia and imagery touted by the white nationalists in Charlottesville: tiki torches, Confederate flags, and Southern Nationalist shields. Why is this any of this here, beyond the broadest idea of “South Park takes on”?

By linking the rednecks’ aversion to technology with the racist imagery, South Park winds up pitting their bigotry as coming from the same place – an inability to change with the times.

As if this is what racism is or how it works. Thanks, guys.

Furthermore, the episode uses Randy Marsh’s home-renovation show as a metaphor for racism and white privilege. At the end of the episode, working-class Darryl tearfully admits to middle-class Randy that he can’t renovate his house by tearing down the wall between the dining room and kitchen because it’s a load-bearing wall and the whole house could come down, and he can’t handle that.

This is the most pointed and powerful critique on racism that I can remember the show ever making. It’s white privilege in a nutshell, and how the reluctance to let go of it is because it built the house whites live in.

The moment still gives into the idea that poor whites are the racists and middle-class whites are more enlightened, as Randy sympathizes with Darryl while still telling him that mining coal or driving a truck don’t have great outlooks for the future.

However, the episode then has Randy buttress the load-bearing wall and renovate Darryl’s house. Sharon puts shishi gloss on the Confederate décor, too.

We just watched Randy, Darryl and Sharon keep all the racist crap while making the racist a better house to live in. In many ways, this is what our dominant society ends up doing. But I have no idea if that’s the social commentary South Park was going for, and I don’t like this feeling.

These times are extreme. They’re times that demand sides be taken, frankly, in this fight for the future. South Park’s professed insistence on not taking one may be undoing my enjoyment of the show.

I know I’m not supposed to take South Park so seriously, but what am I supposed to do when this thing has been on most of my life, and I’ve changed more than it?

Look at me, caring about stuff. Lame.

Winnebago Graveyard TP
Written by Steve Niles and Alison Sampson
Art by Alison Sampson, Stéphane Paitreau
Published by Image Comics
In stores 11/22/17

This is one of the best books of the year.

Pick it up right now. Don’t even finish this review.

Just go out and buy this book. It’s awesome.

Steve Niles is one of the best writers out here and it’s great to see him still writing.

A family is having problems. They have decided to take a trip in a Winnebago!

They come to a town with a creepy amusement park. They have a good time at the amusement park.

And then, they get out…and their Winnebago is gone.

What follows is a exhilarating tale as this family tries to escape this town.

Oh, and there’s one of those pesky cults in the town hellbent on killing them.

Niles writes this story fast and furious and it’s beautifully paced. It never feels like a chore to read it. Instead, it’s pure enjoyment. Sampson proves to be an amazing storyteller here and makes some of the best artwork of the year.

Pick this up. It’s exciting, bloody, and damn good.

Extremity Vol. 1: Artist
Written and Illustrated by Daniel Johnson Warren
Published by Image Comics
In stores 9/6/17

This is awesome book that I wasn’t expecting to like.

Try new things people!

This is a great new book from Image and Daniel Johnson Warren is a hell of a talent and has a hell of a future in this business.

It’s a post apocalyptic world.

Thea is a denizen of this world. She dreams of getting revenge on the clan that destroyed her family and took her hand(she’s an artist!) This leads her on a quest that takes her to the very edge.

The writing is great on this book. Warren is a natural storyteller.  The art is great as well. It’s extremely fluid and gorgeous to look at. The best thing for me was the design work. It’s out of this world and reminded me of Moebius.

Pick this up. It’s quite a special book.

RATING: A

Animosity TP Volumes 1 and 2
Written by Marguerite Bennett
Illustrated by Rafael de Latorreand Juan Doe
Published by Aftershock Comics

Marguerite Bennett is such a good conic book writer and it’s heart warming to see her working at Aftershock Comics.

I couldn’t wait to dig into these two trade paperbacks. I was so happy to read this. It’s a fantastic original story.

One day, out of nowhere, all of the animals on the planet started thinking.

They started talking. And they start wanting equal rights. A war breaks out. One year after all of this, a young girl Jesse and her dog Sandor travel across America to find Jesse’s half brother. Sandor is sworn to protect her. But can he?

The writing is tense and topical. Bennett really knows how to move a book. The art is awesome and tops. Pick up both of these. Your collection needs these books in it. Trust me.

In stores next week is author Andy Heidel’s book, The Cocktail Guide To The Galaxy, which includes over 100 fun and easy to make recipes – these cocktails are simple to make with no crazy ingredients.

Heidel is the notable bar owner of The Way Station in Brooklyn, NY. A true mecca for nerd culture, The Way Station has found its way on to numerous lists of the best sci-fi bars and is even complete with a TARDIS themed bathroom.

The book features more of the themed cocktails Heidel’s patrons know and love and is filled with pop culture references from Metropolis, to Guardians of the Galaxy, to Star Wars, and everything in between.

And thanks to our friends at St. Martin’s Press., we’re sharing the Blade Runner themed cocktail, the “Blade Rummer” with Forces of Geek readers!

Blade Rummer

I’ve drunk things you people wouldn’t believe. Whiskey and cough syrup on fire off the shoulder of I-95. I quaffed a glittering gin and tonic in the black light near Hauser’s Gate. All those cocktails will be lost in time, like tears… in…my brain. Time to cry.

1 part spiced rum
¼ part Chambord
1 part orange juice
1 part pineapple juice
Splash of lime juice

Pour all the ingredients into a medium glad filled with ice. Stir, and dream of electric sheep.

Rum runners, unlike Blade Runners (who chase down Replicants), transported rum from the Caribbean to Florida during the Prohibition era. Like most drinks, the Rum Runner was created by a bar that had an abundance of its main ingredients – in this case, rum and banana liqueur. I, being a sane man and not a masochistic cocktail guide writer, didn’t include banana liqueur in this drink. Also, Chloé hates bananas.

The Cocktail Guide to the Galaxy by Andy Heidel
arrives in stores & e-tailers on September 26th.

Mark Waid Stands Up (Again) To Defend The Rights and Equality of Comic Creators

$

Mark Waid is one of the good guys.

With a career as both a writer and editor, the inimitable Mr. Waid not only writes about heroes, but he’s a bit of a hero himself.  From financially assisting creators who were owed money by their publisher to his ongoing op/eds on Facebook, Waid is constant supporter of knocking down bullies and trying to make the comic book industry both a better and more inclusive space.

Today, he took to Facebook to discuss his experiences at this past weekend’s Baltimore Comic Con.

Harassment in this industry towards young creators of gender and of color, LGBTQ+ creators, just peaked. Something awful has happened and we need to talk.

I just got back from Baltimore Comic Con, which was its usual one-of-the-best-conventions-in-the-nation. Marc Nathan and his crew are courteous, attentive, and most importantly, terrifically sensitive to the safety concerns of some of the creators and fans who feel threatened by the current climate, alleviating their worries. Marc and his team are knights.

Over the past couple of weeks, a disappointingly large number of younger creators have been reaching out to me about harassment from angry fringe “fans.” With that in mind, the best and most worthwhile moments of the convention came from walking the floor, talking and listening, helping raise awareness of how bad harassment has become—awareness both among fans and among my generation of pros. Too many of the latter were still of the “Ahhh, ignore haters, they’ll go away” school until I reminded them of the demented, armed fan at Phoenix Comic Con last May who was arrested just before he could assault a guest of the show. Until I could share with them confidentially some of the most serious rape threats and death threats. The folks I talked to, many of them with big megaphones, some of them storeowners, a couple of them well-intended YouTube commenters eager to distance themselves from the personal-attack ones, are all ready to redouble their support to those younger pros who feel unwelcome or targeted. Regardless of gender or race or background, we worked together on some positive actions we can take in the days and weeks to come. That’s no silver bullet, but I’ve been assured that it’s a step forward.

Conversely and with transparency, let’s talk about my misstep. By unartfully making my original post about industry harassment sound as if all of it came only from one or two YouTube videos and not also from the repeated misogynist/anti-LGBTQ comments—made in private as well as in public—I got thrown by a brilliant bit of opposition judo: I allowed the conversation to be framed as “Comics creators can’t take criticism!” or “Comics creators punch down on innocent fans!” I fell into that trap like a total tyro, I didn’t do us any favors, and anyone who recognizes that can glare at me; I deserve it.

So, with more clarity: the actual problem, the one that so many younger or career-vulnerable creators keep speaking to me about, isn’t YouTube videos that complain about a black girl in Iron Man armor or how Marvel did a story that temporarily turned Captain America into a Nazi. They’re not the ones that scream in all-caps titles that I’m a sick SJW who’s destroying comics with my liberal agenda. Fine. You buy the comics, you have a right to an opinion, obviously. Broadcast your thoughts. It’s a free country. Have at. In fact, come at me if you’re offended by progressivism. I’m proud to be a progressive writer, and as a freelancer I can speak freely for myself without fear of being censured or accused of representing a specific publisher.

The actual problem is that there are a large number of younger creators/professionals/staffers in this industry–a larger number than you could possibly imagine–who do not have that same privilege. They are being harassed repeatedly, and it’s getting worse. As I say, I’ve been talking with many of them over the last few weeks. These are not histrionic people. These are not overly dramatic people. They are reasonable adults, some of whom cannot speak out because of their employers. And yet they are legitimately frightened by harassers who threaten to come and find them at conventions, at stores, *at their homes.* One was told she should be burned to death. Another was told that she should be put down like a dog. And those are examples of some of the less hateful attacks. I have screencaps of all of this material, I’m looking at them right now, and they’re being dealt with by authorities, but that’s where we’re at. This is becoming commonplace, and I have reached the end of my patience.

Not long ago, one of my friends had something terrible happen to them because of all this. At their request, I can’t talk about it right now–it’s been a bit, but it was vile and the wound is still fresh. You may choose not to believe me, but I have always been truthful and transparent and straightforward with every one of you every moment of every day over the last 35+ years, and you know that. I have trusted you with my honesty and my thoughts, and now I need you to trust me when I say that some of these harassers have gone too far.

Criticism of the work itself is fine, but no reasonable person would fail to draw the line at direct personal threats and attacks on gender and race and orientation. All of you would hold that line, I know it. I believe in the people who have believed in me. So I’m asking for your help. Not to mob up, not to attack, not to confront–that does no good. These harassers feed on attention and they need to be starved of attention. They need to be drowned out. I’m asking for your help to change the signal-to-noise ratio. I’m asking for your help, on the behalf of the people who need us, to do two things, two simple things:

One: show your support. Share this piece far and wide. Comment all day long, wherever you can, to show those being bullied that we have their backs. And do it tomorrow, and the day after, and keep doing it. It makes a difference to the people who need us. If you reject bigotry, misogyny, and racism, remind others that comics is an inclusive medium made stronger by the voices it amplifies.

Two: Please–pro or fan–start championing positivity in comics, not hate. Established pros, myself included, have to really start tamping down the instinct to push back on social media even when the attacks get brutally personal and vicious. We have to rise above. We have to do our part to change that signal-to-noise ratio. Fans, we know we can count on you to spread a positive message; we are a medium of heroes, and there is nothing heroic about causing someone to suffer or standing by and letting it happen.

Champion positivity in comics, not hate. Talk about what you love. Try to look beyond that one title you think we’ve screwed up or that one artist whose work repels you. Think about what’s happening to real people. Think about how that same hate could so easily turn on a friend of yours, or on you. There are hundreds and hundreds of comics published every month, and if your favorite one hits a rough patch, I’m genuinely sorry, I really am, but you know it’ll eventually come around, so take the opportunity to expose yourself to other books, other series you might like. Hell, if nothing else, go read SAGA. No one doesn’t like SAGA. Just tell each other about the wonders you find.

Maybe you think everything I’ve said here is overblown. Partly because of various investigations in play, I don’t have a whole lot to show you at this time. I can’t make you believe me. All I can do is once more remind you that I have always been open and honest with you, and I will never lie to you. Harassment to the point where professionals are pulling out of conventions or shying away from anywhere where fans tend to congregate is utterly unacceptable, and—frustratingly—there will always be some fans who don’t take that concern seriously. We live in a cynical time. Empathy’s in short supply. But even if you’re still skeptical, it doesn’t matter, not if you’re a good people. Consider. Just as no one has the right to tell us what we do or don’t have a right to be angry or frustrated about, no one should be able to tell frightened people that they don’t have a right to be afraid. If you’re grieving, if you’re happy, we can respect your grief or your joy even if we don’t share it, because we have basic human empathy. By that same measure, we can never belittle the feelings and fears of others just because we don’t share them. At best, that’s cold. At worst, it just creates more rage and thus makes everything worse for everyone.

I’m surrounded by a lot of good, concerned people as we work on this, most of whom are smarter and more aware than I am. Together, we’re going to do what we can to help tamp down the anger and hate that’s hurting us all. If this is something that matters to you, you are more than welcome be part of that conversation. If you just need to speak privately, we will listen. Either way, your voice is valued, and we will hear you.

Thank you.

How to Start a Successful YouTube Gaming Channel

$

0

If you have a passion for gaming and want to share that passion with others, starting your own YouTube channel could be a great idea. That being said, you’ve got to go about creating, building and maintaining your channel the right way if you desire to see solid results from your efforts. Here are a few tips for making the most of your YouTube gaming channel:

Start Off With a Plan

While you might not see a YouTube channel as a business, like Bobby Kotick has with Blizzard, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to have a solid plan like you would when starting your own company. Decide whether your channel will be a hobby or something you want to make a bit of extra income from. Figure out how often you’ll upload videos, if there’s a specific game genre you’ll feature on your channel and how you’ll spread the word about your channel, which might mean setting up a Twitter or Facebook account in addition to a YouTube channel.

Pay Attention to What Other Successful YouTube Gamers Are Doing

Before kicking off your own YouTube channel, take a moment to see what makes the top YouTube gaming channels so successful. Do these YouTubers have a specific format or platform that seems to resonate with viewers? Is it their personality that keeps people coming back? Do they do more than play games on their channel? No matter what the appeal might be, see if you can model it on your own channel.

As you’re taking note of what popular YouTube gamers get right, pay attention to what they get wrong as well. Scour the internet to see if these individuals have been involved in scandals and why. It’s always better to learn from the mistakes of others rather than make those mistakes yourself and learn a lesson the hard way.

Make Connecting and Interacting With Your Viewers a Top Priority

Your YouTube channel won’t amount to much if you’re unable to capture and keep the interest of your audience. Make it a priority to connect with your audience and interact with them. This is as easy as inviting your viewers to leave comments or share their thoughts on the games you play. You can also ask your viewers if there are any games, in particular, they’d like to see you play. And when your viewers leave comments, be sure you respond to them. Should you ever find yourself so busy that you aren’t able to answer questions or interact with your viewers, tell them why and make an honest effort to do better in the future. Know there’s a chance your channel might attract online trolls who leave nothing but criticisms and hateful as well as hurtful comments. Don’t hesitate to block these individuals as soon as they crop up, and under no circumstances should you interact with them.

Create a Recording Schedule

To remain as consistent as possible, and to make recording for your gaming channel second nature, it’s a good idea to create a recording schedule. Not only is this easier for you, it’s easier for your audience as well because they know for a fact when they can expect new material from you. As you’re creating your schedule, be sure to account for the time it takes to edit and upload videos. If you anticipate any hiccups in your schedule make sure you communicate with your audience so they know what’s up.

Create Links to Your Channel

Don’t just rely on YouTube and Google search engines to let people know about your gaming channel. Take out some time to share links to your videos on your social media pages, gaming blogs, gaming websites and magazines; you never know how someone might manage to stumble on your channel and stick around to explore more of your material. You can also promote other gaming channels you like and want to support. Rather than see other YouTube gamers as competition, consider them to be your friends. After all, there’s plenty of room for everyone, and there’s no reason viewers can’t subscribe to multiple gaming channels. Other gamers can help you build your audience just as much as you can help them build theirs.

Create a Brand Graphic

What leading company today doesn’t have some kind of branding associated with it? None. To make it easier for your audience to associate you with your videos, create a unique graphic you attach to every video. Create a graphic you feel not only represents you, but your channel as well. Once you decide on this graphic, be sure it appears at the beginning of every video and that you add it as a watermark that appears unobtrusively in the corner of your videos.

Creating and building a successful YouTube gaming channel requires patience, effort and a solid strategy. Keep sight of your goal, and remember to have as much fun as possible.

Dark Horse Comics has announced that writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dean Ormston’s creator owned BLACK HAMMER superhero saga will return in 2018 with a new ongoing series titled BLACK HAMMER: AGE OF DOOM. The new ongoing series will continue to chronicle the adventures of the forgotten champions of Spiral City, following the events of the cliffhanger ending of issue thirteen of BLACK HAMMER.

“One thing BLACK HAMMER has always done is comment on the history of superhero comics and we live in a world where superhero universes seem to be rebooted, relaunched, and rebirthed every year,” said Lemire. “It felt like we needed to play around with that idea, but put a BLACK HAMMER spin on it. So, starting in April, Dean, Dave Stewart, Todd Klein, and I will continue the story and the mystery of Black Hammer farm in BLACK HAMMER: AGE OF DOOM! It’s a new series, but everything you love will stay intact and we’ll deliver the next chapter in the story of Golden Gail, Abraham Slam, Barbalien and the rest of the gang.”

“BLACK HAMMER ends with a major, game changing revelation,” said Ormston. “Readers are super keen to find out how our heroes are stuck on the farm and more answers, twists and turns are coming in BLACK HAMMER: AGE OF DOOM.”

Meanwhile fans won’t have to wait long for new BLACK HAMMER universe stories. On October 18, Dark Horse Comics will publish the first issue of SHERLOCK FRANKENSTEIN & THE LEGION OF EVIL, written by Lemire and illustrated by artist David Rubín (ETHER). The highly anticipated four issue series follows Lucy Weber—the daughter of the Black Hammer and an investigative reporter for the Global Planet—as she uncovers the dark secret origins of some of her father’s greatest foes. SHERLOCK FRANKENSTEIN & THE LEGION OF EVIL is the first of several high profile BLACK HAMMER mini-series, all of which will feature different artists.

When BLACK HAMMER: AGE OF DOOM debuts in April 2018, each issue of the ongoing series will featuring a variant cover by an acclaimed artist, including an issue 1 cover by Skottie Young (I HATE FAIRYLAND) and an issue 2 variant cover by Fábio Moon (TWO BROTHERS) that is an homage to Frank Miller’s icon BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS cover.

“BLACK HAMMER has grown beyond what Dean Ormston and I could ever have hoped for,” said Lemire. “We’ve fallen in love with the world of BLACK HAMMER and the characters that live there and we have a lot of story left to tell. This ending is just the beginning.”

After 20 Years, How I Fell Back in Love With Dragon Con

Dragon Con 2017 marked my 20th year attending what has become not only Atlanta, GA’s premier convention, but the premier convention of the Southeast.

More than 82,000 fans of comics, gaming, cosplay, movies, TV and pretty much anything genre you can think of continue to make this show an annual destination, with many centering their year’s around it.

And I understand why.

It really is a show that offers something for everybody.

However, as huge as the show is– it overtakes five large hotels and one giant trade building– for me, the fun of Dragon Con 2017 was in breaking away from the massive crowds and discovering the little joys that this show has to offer.

Make no mistake- it’s fun to join the crush of people crowding the Marriott Marquis at midnight to see the never-ending cavalcade of amazing cosplay. But there’s a rush in discovering something about a giant con that almost feels like a secret.

Late Night Gaming

As much as it’s known for celebrating all-things-genre, Dragon Con probably has just as big a reputation as an all night, all weekend party. Dragon Con offers no shortage of parties both official and unofficial be it in a hotel ballroom or a hotel room. It’s part of the show’s appeal

However, this year I discovered the joy of wandering into random groups of people playing games in random places.

Some quiet corner of a bar, a barely traveled sub-level of one of the host hotels, a conference room that’s still unlocked but unused at 3 a.m., you can find a game of Werewolf, Mafia, Cards Against Humanity, Munchkin, Boss Monster and more all away from the crowds.

But don’t think that just because these folks aren’t at one of the hotel bars or private room parties that they’re not celebrating. During a game of Werewolf, I helped a fella cosplaying Sailor Moon work through a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon while sharing a flask of whiskey with a woman attending her first Dragon Con ever.

Together, we drunkenly accused hapless villagers of being werewolves with varying degrees of success.

The Best Single Serving Friends Ever

80,000 is a lot of people. And when all those people pack into one place, faces just blend together. They become scenery more than anything else.

But once you start wandering the less traveled areas of Dragon Con, people turn back into individuals, which makes for easier connections.

That guy cosplaying Sailor Moon with the PBR?

That guy became my best friends for a good two hours. On top of playing Werewolf, we just had a blast shooting the shit with each other. I was alone, but he was with a group of friends. A brief introduction later and I had my own temporary running crew.

We had a blast and it felt the same as hanging out with good friends. And when it was it was time to go our separate ways, yeah, I felt more than a little bummed.

But guess what?

Just a little while later while sticking my head into one of the many anime screening rooms, I buddied up with an all-new crew.

This doesn’t really happen the years I stick to the beaten path. Sure, I may chat someone up while waiting in line or waiting at the bar, but that’s about it.

Music Everywhere

I wasn’t kidding when I said Dragon Con has something for everyone and that includes music.

There’s a pretty strong showing of talented artists you’ve never heard of in attendance trying to attract new fans. While some have shows that fill out ballrooms, most just play sets to small crowds out of the way in The Hyatt.

I’ve never paid the music much mind, but this year I decided to change that. I made a point to give as many bands and groups a listen and found that there were some great acts playing their asses off.

I even wound up sticking around after a set or two to talk to the band. I even walked away a big fan of South Carolina’s Wasted Wine, a band rightfully described by NPR as “… a bastard child of David Lynch and Nick Cave.”

A Renewed Love of Dragon Con

I guess all of this is to say that after 20 years attending Dragon Con, it was breaking away from the crowd that made me feel like I was attending for the very first time all over again. Everything felt new again, and because of that I really didn’t want to leave the show each night.

I wanted to stay and I wanted to keep exploring to see what else and who else I could stumble onto.

Because of that it wasn’t just one of the best Dragon Con experiences I’ve ever had, and I’m already chomping at the bit to see what I can discover at Dragon Con 2018.

Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Leia, Princess of Alderaan
Written by Claudia Gray
Published by Disney Lucasfilm Press

Released September 1, 2017 / $17.99

The passing of Carrie Fisher last December caused a great disturbance in The Force.

The world lost a great performer who portrayed one of the most iconic characters in the history of pop culture: Princess Leia.

The loss of Fisher naturally prompted questions regarding the direction of the sequel trilogy.

While movie magic can make all sorts of things happen on the silver screen, The Last Jedi will reportedly be the last time we see Leia.

Claudia Gray marvelously provides another avenue for fans to not only enjoy Leia once more, but to learn even more about her days before A New Hope and up to Rogue One.

Leia: Princess of Alderaan follows a 16-year-old Princess Leia Organa as she learned how to maneuver through the galaxy’s political turmoil while discovering the spark of Rebellion within her family. A hallmark of Leia’s character is that she has no problem telling you what is on her mind and it’s ingrained in her to do the right thing and help those in need. Even in her younger years, Leia possessed these traits.

The tension rises throughout the book as Leia yearns to cut through the bureaucratic red tape of the Imperial Senate. Those with an abundance of political capital often have egos, which need to be massaged in order to get something out of them. Leia understands how and why the game needs to be played; however, it draws her ire when these permissible machinations occur at the expense of life and liberty.

Keeping it real is Leia’s strong suit, but learning when not to keep it real is the struggle of the norm.

Leia is not only a champion for good, she is also not afraid to roll up her sleeves and is very aware that she comes from privilege. The optics of her upbringing interferes with her objectives at times. Still she appreciates, but never forgets, that she has more than most, which strengthens her resolve.

This is a young adult novel so there are some romantic entanglements in the book. Please, please, don’t let those two factors turn you away. Romance has always been a part of a galaxy far, far away. The political tone is not diluted either. In many ways, it’s the centerpiece of the narrative. There is not a lot of fighting or space battles in a book carrying the Star Wars name. Politics earns its place to such a degree that it makes me wish that Claudia Gray had a hand in writing those films.

Speaking of the prequels, there is a character we haven’t seen or heard from since The Phantom Menace. This individual’s introduction to the Princess brought about all sorts of questions that increased the tension with each word printed on the page.

Bail Organa is a poignant figure not only in the Rebellion but because he’s Leia’s adopted father, however, we never knew anything about Leia’s mother, until now. Queen Breha Organa is examined at length and Gray does a great job of creating the connective thread of sort. Breha is a considerate and strong-minded leader with years of experience, something Leia never truly had in the original trilogy due to the breakout of the galactic civil war. Breha deserves a lot of credit for Leia’s natural acumen for leadership and I hope we get more of her in future novels.

Claudia Gray’s previous work with Lost Stars, Bloodlines and now Leia: Princess of Alderaan makes three for three when it comes to the new canon novels.

The writing in all three books consists of masterful storytelling that makes the adventure easy to visualize. All three also show the reverence that Gray has for Princess Leia, even in Lost Stars when her appearance was brief, but elegantly memorable. Leia’s perspective of that moment is expressed here and the same goes for Bloodlines.

Princess of Alderaan’s character study of its titular protagonist is one of the best pieces of new canon that has been produced. The esteem that people have for Leia will certainly be elevated in general and especially going into The Last Jedi, making Claudia Gray the best Star Wars writer since Timothy Zahn.

Sequart Releases ‘Planet of The Apes’ Book Analyzing the Movies, TV Shows, and Novels

Sequart Organization is proud to announce the publication of Bright Eyes, Ape City: Examining the Planet of the Apes Mythos, edited by Rich Handley and Joseph F. Berenato.

“A planet where apes evolved from men?”

With those horrified words, Charlton Heston’s Colonel George Taylor summed up exactly what viewers were thinking in 1968 the first time they saw Planet of the Apes in theaters.

Loincloth-clad humans reduced to mute savages, living in cages or in the wild?

Xenophobic orangutans, militaristic gorillas, and curious chimpanzees with a rigid class structure, Greco-Roman names, religious dogma, and the ability to speak and reason?

What goes on here? It’s a madhouse!

Audiences were hooked — and they remain hooked almost five decades later.

Planet of the Apes (based on Pierre Boulle’s French novel Monkey Planet) has spawned eight films, with a ninth currently in the works, as well as two television series and several novels.

It’s one of the most respected franchises in pop-culture history, thanks to the talents of writers Rod Serling, Michael Wilson, Paul Dehn, John and Joyce Corrington, William Broyles Jr., Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Mark Bomback; directors Franklin J. Schaffner, Ted Post, Don Taylor, J. Lee Thompson, Tim Burton, Rupert Wyatt, and Matt Reeves; makeup artists John Chambers and Rick Baker; and a long list of beloved actors who have breathed life into some of the most memorable science-fiction characters ever to grace the large or small screen.

Bright Eyes, Ape City: Examining the Planet of the Apes Mythos, edited by the same team behind Sequart’s Sacred Scrolls: Comics on the Planet of the Apes, examines every Apes film, TV show, and novel, from 1968 to present. This anthology features insightful, analytical essays about the franchise’s long history, from popular film historians, novelists, bloggers, and subject-matter experts. If you’re eager to learn more about Apes lore, then you’ll need to get your stinkin’ paws on this book.

The book runs 308 pages and features a foreword by David Gerrold.

Bright Eyes, Ape City: Examining the Planet of the Apes Mythos is available in print and on Kindle. (Just a reminder: you don’t need a Kindle device to read Kindle-formatted books; you can download a free Kindle reader for most computers, phones, and tablets.)

Toybox Time Machine:
A Catalog of the Coolest Toys Never Made
Written and Illustrated by Marty Baumann
Introduction by Byron Howard
Foreword by Jim Steranko

ISBN-13: 978-1631409073

Anyone who ever read a DC comic book in the 1960s would likely be familiar with the concept of multiple earths. The parallel earth theory has long been a trope in science fiction—a world just like ours, only slightly different.

The best way to look at the recent IDW book, Toybox Time Machine—conceived and illustrated by Disney artist Marty Baumann—is as a collection of 1950s and 1960s toy, magazine, and comics ads from such a parallel earth.

You certainly aren’t going to find a single one of these playthings on OUR world!

Described as “a catalog of the coolest toys never made,” that’s not entirely accurate. In fact, many of these selfsame toys were available in my own sixties childhood. I even had some of them. The clever twist here, though, is that these aren’t quiiiiite the originals. For example, the Girl From U.N.C.L.E. doll is now “Holly Thorne, Agent of M.O.D.” Similarly, the Man From U.N.C.L.E. is now “The Man Called C.O.U.S.I.N.” They’re the same as they were on our earth…only different.

That minor caveat aside, the author, in his introduction, writes, “I hope this volume recaptures something of an innocent era of boundless commercial creativity.” And that, my friends, is where the joy of this volume truly lies.

Although the ads do somewhat resemble the ironic ad parodies found in classic issues of Mad or National Lampoon, a closer look shows these to be instead a loving homage, showcasing more the retro-cool design work of the almost magical toy ads of the mid 20th century rather than skewering it in any way.

Admittedly, it’s an odd idea—“Hey, I used to love those neat toy ads from when I was a kid! Why don’t I draw a hundred and fifty fake ones and make a book out of it?” But it works!

If you’re of the right age, you’ll recognize, among others, Jonny Quest, Viewmaster, George of the Jungle, Sparkle Paints, Big Daddy Roth, Dick Tracy, King Kong, Hamilton’s Invaders, Yogi Bear, the Green Hornet, Dark Shadows, Supercar, and the Johnny Seven gun! And monsters! Monster toys were omnipresent in my childhood and thus they make a great showing here as well!

Look also for a cameo by legendary comics artist (and the Foreword writer to this book), Jim Steranko, as a Marshal Brodine-style TV magician in an ad for the Art Kenso Magic Club!

There are even running gags between ads like the multiple appearances of Yetiki or Steve Holland (similar to the way real-life model Holland was the paperback Doc Savage but also appeared on hundreds of other mass market covers in his day).

I have to question one ad, though—for Vampire Blood in a tube. I actually HAD that, circa 1973. A white tube with a red splatter logo, just like in the “fake” ad.” How’d that get in there? As I recall, it was a little too thin to be realistic but I still creeped out my share of girls and parents with it. But I digress.

The artist has clearly invested lots of love in these pages—from the scores of fake logos that are better than many real ones to the wrinkled, grubby paper effect throughout. Toybox Time Machine is a quick, fun read and best of all, like every toy catalog you ever had as a kid, its something you’ll want to revisit often, both to enjoy Mr. Baumann’s superb, faux nostalgic artwork, and to dream of what might have been.

‘Ain’t Got Time to Bleed’ Investigates The Medical Reports on Hollywood’s Greatest Action Heroes

What do John McClane, Beatrix Kiddo, and John Rambo have in common? Besides being big-screen badasses, these Hollywood action heroes shrug off bullets like mosquito bites and jump through panes of glass as if their skin is made of asbestos. But could these wounded warriors really survive such grievous injuries in the real world?

Andrew Shaffer’s Ain’t Got Time to Bleed, a new book from Insight Editions this fall, features twenty-nine hilariously grisly diagnoses of the best-known characters in the genre that will change the way you watch action movies forever. Featuring full-color illustrations that reveal how these hard-boiled icons would really look after being put through the Hollywood wringer, Ain’t Got Time to Bleed uses authentic medical research—and a dash of scathingly sardonic commentary—to assess our heroes’ chance of survival. Spoiler alert: full faculty recovery is very unlikely.

Community leaders tried to stop the release. The P.T.A. fought to ban it. Now one of the most controversial slasher films of all time, Silent Night, Deadly Night, is back in a new high-definition release!  On December 5, 2017, Scream Factory will celebrate the horror holiday favorite with a 2-disc Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, complete with a transfer restored from the original vaulted film negative and hours of bonus material.

Scream Factory will also offer a limited edition set that includes a poster, slipcover and the exclusive Billy/Killer Santa action figure from NECA, available for pre-order on shoutfactory.com.  This 8-inch clothed Billy Chapman action figure is dressed in a fabric Santa suit with removable sculpted hat and features the authorized likeness of actor Robert Brian Wilson. The figure is fully poseable and comes with an ax accessory in window box packaging.

Silent Night, Deadly Night is the heartwarming story of little Billy Chapman who was traumatized by his parents’ Christmas Eve murder, then brutalized by sadistic orphanage nuns. But when grown-up Billy is to dress as jolly St. Nick, he goes on a yuletide rampage to “punish the naughty!” Santa Claus is coming to town … and this time he’s got an axe! Robert Brian Wilson and Scream Queen Linnea Quigley star in this jaw-dropping horror classic that a nation of angry mothers still cannot stop!
