Dynamite Announces ‘Sheena’ Series From Marguerite Bennett, Christina Trujilo and Moritat

Things heat up this summer, as Dynamite Entertainment welcomes readers back to the jungle with the launch of their latest iconic character, Sheena! Written by the creative dynamic duo made-up of GLAAD-Nominated, NYT Best-Selling Marguerite Bennett (Batwoman, Animosity) and newcomer Christina Trujilo, with illustrations by Moritat (Hellblazer, Teen Titans), everyone’s favorite Queen of the Jungle swings back into action on August 2, 2017 when issue #0 lands in stores!
Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, was the first female character in comics to carry her own dedicated series beginning in 1937. Created by industry legends Will Eisner and S. M. “Jerry” Iger, this groundbreaking character saw 167 issues over the span of two decades. In this riveting relaunch, Sheena proves her prowess as the guardian of the jungle as she pursues a mysterious invader that has come to spy on the Amazon’s most ancient secrets. Following the path of the trespasser, she encounters a forbidden ruin in which even more deadly dangers lie in wait — and begins an adventure that will take her beyond her wildest imaginings!
Writer Marguerite Bennett says, “Our story is glorious golden age pulp — high adventure, quick wit, ancient mysteries, and daring dames — clashing with the perils of two worlds: one, the modern world come to conquer, and one, a world of dark supernatural mystery long forgotten, awoken to anger once more. This is a fast paced, action packed kick off to more exciting adventures for Sheena!”
Marguerite Bennett is the New York Times Bestselling, GLAAD-Nominated writer of Bombshells, Batwoman, A-Force, and Animosity, and is proud to introduce co-writer Christina Trujillo.
Christina Trujillo adds, “Sheena is strong, brave, and willing to bend the rules in order to do her duty and keep her home safe. I think fans will enjoy having Sheena as a guide while they unravel the mysteries of the forest.”
A former student of Scott Snyder (Batman), Trujillo received an MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College in 2013, has seen her works published in the literary journal Dark Phrases, and was a finalist for Galaxy Press’s Writers of the Future award.
Artist Moritat says, “Stepping into Will Eisner’s large shoes yet again, but this time wearing nothing but a leopard mono-kini. Marguerite Bennett’s brilliant contemporary re-telling of this famous legend is my favorite to date. I can’t wait to see if the fans like it.”
Dynamite Entertainment Executive Editor Joseph Rybandt said of the new project, “Sheena has long been a staple feature throughout the history of comics and we’re especially proud to be adding new voices to that history. Marguerite and Christina present a timely and empowering tale – enhanced by the pitch-perfect visuals of Moritat – to create a Queen of the Jungle for the 21st century… and beyond.”
“Sheena is one of the strongest and most iconic characters in comics, and we’re fortunate to be working with three incredibly talented creators.  Marguerite and Christina make a great creative team giving Sheena a new voice, and is complemented by the lush artwork that Moritat brings to the series,” says Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci.  “We are incredibly proud of this series, and are launching it with the same program we launched Red Sonja #0 and Vampirella #0, with a .25 cent Introductory Priced issue.  This allows retailers to stock up at a low risk so that as many fans as possible will have the opportunity to read the series.  It’s a program that worked successfully for Red Sonja and Vampirella, and we’re doing so again with Sheena!  I cannot wait for fans to check out the new series!”
Sheena began her fictional existence as an orphan raised by a shaman in the jungle, perfecting her survival skills and mastering the ability to communicate with animals. Her many adventures brought her into conflict with evil hunters, slave traders, and rampaging wildlife. The character has thrilled audiences in several television and film adaptations, including portrayals by actresses Irish McCalla (1955-1956), Tanya Roberts (1984), and Gena Lee Nolin (2000). Dynamite Entertainment has a long history of publishing jungle fantasy and pulp adventure, making it the perfect home for Sheena!
Cover artwork for Sheena #0 spotlights the talents of the Emanuela Lupacchino (Starfire, Supergirl) with limited variant editions including “Sneak Peek” covers from interior artist Moritat, as well as from Ryan Sook (X-Factor, The Spectre) and J. Scott Campbell (The Amazing Spiderman)!
Sheena #0 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2017 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Sheena #0 with their local comic book retailers. Sheena #0 will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of ComixologyKindleiBooksGoogle Play,Dynamite DigitaliVerseMadefire, and Dark Horse Digital.

Critically Acclaimed Writer Jody Houser to Script ‘James Bond: Moneypenny’ For Dynamite

Critically-acclaimed writer Jody Houser (Mother Panic, Faith, Orphan Black) steps into the iconic world of James Bond in an all-new miniseries, authorized by Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, centering around the character’s friend, confidant, and former MI6 field agent, Moneypenny. Houser, who will become the first female writer to take tackle the Bond universe in comic book form, will be joined by up-and-coming artist Jacob Edgar for Moneypenny’s first-ever dedicated tale of adventure in James Bond: Moneypenny!

Hitting stores August 30th, James Bond: Moneypenny focuses on what was intended to be a ‘routine’ protection mission for Moneypenny, until she uncovers a complicated assassination plot that bears a striking and unsettling resemblance to a tragic, and life-changing terrorist attack from her childhood. In the face of imminent danger, will Moneypenny be able summon her secret agent skills to stop the impending plot before it’s too late?
Writer Jody Houser says, “As someone who came to James Bond late (much to the horror of many of my friends), the idea that I’d get to play in that world is amazing. Writing a character like Moneypenny and exploring what makes her different from the more familiar MI6 operative has been a blast. In this story, we’ll get a look at exactly how she operates and some of the events that made her the woman she is.”
Houser earned an MFA in Creative Writing at Emerson College in Boston, where she completed her master’s thesis in screenwriting and was a winner of the Rod Parker Fellowship for Playwriting. Starting in 2006, Houser began experimenting with webcomics, and in 2010 debuted the popular Cupcake POW!, before going on to work with a number of the top industry publishers to write some of her most successful titles including Mother Panic, Faith, and Orphan Black.
“We’re excited to launch James Bond: Moneypenny and bring a fresh, new voice to the Bond universe,” says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. “We’ve followed Jody’s career and have wanted to work with her for quite a big, and this is the perfect project to work with her on.  As the first female writer to tackle the comic book world of Bond, Jody is certain to bring new perspective and a fresh take on the iconic characters, while adding that extra touch of class Jody brings to all her works.”
Moneypenny first appeared alongside James Bond in Ian Fleming’s very first novel, Casino Royale, published in 1953. As the personal secretary to M, Bond’s boss at MI6, she would go on to play a small role in almost all of Ian Fleming’s Bond novels, but did not receive much character development until 2006’s spin-off series, The Moneypenny Diaries. In 2015, Dynamite published Warren Ellis’ James Bond: Eidolon series, in which Moneypenney is featured as a major character.  James Bond: Moneypenny marks the first time the character has received a dedicated story in comic book form!
James Bond: Moneypenny will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2017 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of James Bond: Moneypenny with their local comic book retailers. James Bond: Moneypenny will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play,Dynamite Digital, iVerse, Madefire, and Dark Horse Digital.

3 Gaming Trends That Will Dominate The Headlines in 2017

0
0

Advances in technology have transformed the gaming industry and shifted video games from being a pastime pursued by a few into one enjoyed by millions. The ubiquity of smartphones and other mobile devices means that many of us are now casual gamers at the very least, and such growth has served to fuel further advancement of the technology itself.

From better graphics to smaller machines that boast faster processing power, innovative trends in gaming are now of interest to many people. This post takes a look at three gaming trends that are set to dominate the headlines in 2017.

The End of Console Generations

Since the very beginning, video game consoles have captured the hearts of gamers across the world and taken pride of place in many homes next to the TV. Each new generation has always been smaller, faster, and been able to provide gamers with the best graphics of each generation.

At the same time, a strong and vibrant PC gaming culture has always existed alongside wave after wave of consoles. Now it seems that the only way consoles can evolve is by adopting the very qualities that PC gamers love most about their machines.

First up is Microsoft’s project Scorpio, a powerful machine that may only ever need software updates once you buy it. Whether Scorpio marks the end of consoles as we know them remains to be seen, but its release later this year will ensure this trend gathers steam in 2017.

Mobile Gaming and Gambling

As mentioned above, one of the biggest drivers of growth in the gaming sector is the increased use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. A whole new audience has discovered casual gaming through mobile games sites and apps, with people of all ages all taking part.

One genre that has seen massive growth due to the ubiquity of smartphones is mobile gaming and gambling with the number of active players on sites such as Play Cosmo set to increase again in 2017. Operators in the sector are now some of the internet’s biggest advertisers as competition increases and more users come online.

With mobile online speeds continuing to get faster and more people get access to internet connected devices; the enjoyment of gambling online is another trend that will dominate gaming news in 2017.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Virtual reality and augmented reality are two emerging technologies that have many exciting implications for a number of industries but both are set to have a big impact on gaming in 2017. With Sony releasing its PlayStation VR headset and other cost effective rigs coming to market, this year should see more content arrive to capture the imagination of gamers worldwide. In the same way, the success of the mobile-based augmented reality game Pokémon GO shows the possibilities that can be achieved when the technology and gaming come together.

Looking ahead, it is clear that in addition to a number of exciting titles slated for release throughout the year, virtual reality games in particular, technologies such as VR will continue to dominate the conversation in 2017. In the same way, mobile technology will also be a big factor in the number of new players in genres such as bingo and casino games, as well as the development of new and innovative tech such as augmented reality.

‘Turok’ Returns to Comics Courtesy of Chuck Wendig and Álvaro Sarraseca

0

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce that the classic pulp comic book series Turok returns with an all-new interpretation of the iconic character courtesy of writer Chuck Wendig (Star Wars: Aftermath, Hyperion) and artist Álvaro Sarraseca (Witchblade). With the debut issue set for release in August 2, 2017, Turok #1 also features a bonus Doc Spektor back-up story by Aubrey Sitterson (Street Fighter X, G.I. Joe) and Dylan Burnett (Weavers), a continuation of the serial in the Turok sister titles, The Sovereigns and Magnus.

In the latest Turok adventure, the fascist Saurian soldiers of the Varanid Empire-part dinosaur, part man, all bad-news-have seized control of the Lost Valley, and only the mysterious dinosaur hunter Turok is willing or able to stand against them! But right now, Turok only cares about one thing: tracking down a mysterious missing girl that could hold all of the clues as to how the Lost Valley has changed from the fantastical prehistoric land readers know and love.
Writer Chuck Wendig says, “I wasn’t sure initially about tackling Turok because I wanted to do such a weird and wonderful story world justice — but then, while talking with Dynamite Senior Editor Matt Idelson about all the stuff going on in the real world, an idea hit me in the chest like one of Turok’s arrows. I’m excited to come on board and to hopefully bring something different to the story and to the character, while also keeping the spirit of what makes Turok awesome. And I’m hoping everyone enjoys reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it!”
Chuck Wendig, comic book writer, screenwriter, and blogger, is best known for his popular website Terribleminds.com, as well as for his 2015 novel Star Wars: Aftermath, which debuted at #4 on The New York Times Best Seller list, and #4 on USA Today’s best seller list. In 2013, he was a finalist for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer.
Artist Álvaro Sarraseca says, “I love drawing Turok. I made some character designs of him and finally we chose the wildest. As hunters usually wear the skins of their prey, I asked myself why Turok could not do the same thing? There are no limits for creativity here! This new version of Turok tears apart anything we saw before. I think it will attract new readers who didn’t have any previous interest in the character.”
“I knew Chuck was both incredibly creative and could bring great depth to his characters, and he’s really managed to capture everything that’s great about Turok while reinventing the character in a fun and mysterious way,” says Matt Idelson, Senior Editor with Dynamite Entertainment. “Álvaro was the miraculous result of a loooong search for the perfect artist for this character and more importantly, Chuck’s story.  They make a hell of a team, and their work on the first issue already outshines the serial backup we’ve been running to set up the series.”
“When Dynamite launched the Gold Key line in 2014, we were able to introduce new readers to a now reestablished universe, which has since served as the foundation for further series that we have continued to build upon,” says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. “With the recent success of our series, The Sovereigns, these legendary characters have taken on a new life of their own, and we’re excited to bring the world’s first and foremost dinosaur hunter back to the pages of comics!”
The debut issue of Turok features a wide selection of cover variants, providing fans and retailers with the freedom of choice! The cover artwork features the talents of Aaron Lopresti (Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman), interior artist Álvaro Sarraseca, Aaron Conley (Rocket Raccoon & Groot), and Andy Belanger (Southern Cross), respectively. Limited variant editions in “Black & White” and “Virgin Art” formats are also available as retailer incentives for comic shops that support the launch issue by achieving stocking thresholds.
Originally published by Gold Key Comics from 1954 through 1982, Turok, Son of Stone chronicled the adventures of a young Native American man in the 18th century, who finds himself deep in the Carlsbad canyons where he must confront “ancient forms of life which have disappeared from all other parts of the world.” Since the original comic book run, Turok continued at several comic publishers before finding its home at Dynamite Entertainment in 2014. In additional to the 2014 and now 2017 eponymous series, the character has also appeared in Dynamite’s Doctor Spektor: Master of the Occult, Gold Key: Alliance, and The Sovereigns.
Turok #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2017 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Turok #1 with their local comic book retailers. Turok #1 will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play,Dynamite Digital, iVerse, Madefire, and Dark Horse Digital.

‘It Ain’t Pretty’ (review)

Produced By Dayla Soul
Written by Dayla Soul, Jody Banks
Directed By Dayla Soul
Featuring Bianca Valenti, Rebecca Sandidge,
Andrea Moller, Keala Kennelly, Paige Alms,
Emi Erickson, Sarah Gerhardt, Jamilah Starr, Savannah Shaughnessy, Easkey Britto

To say Dayla Soul’s debut documentary It Ain’t Pretty is complex would be an understatement.

The film documents the multifaceted challenges of women who surf big waves.  It is a commentary about women in sports, the definition of sexuality, societal norms and business.

It is about history and the future at the same time.

Surfers speak a different language than the rest of the world and this makes the early part of the documentary distracting.

As it progresses you get more and more comfortable with the vernacular of the surfing world and things come into focus. I assume 99% of the people who watch this will be into surfing so it doesn’t matter much, but as someone outside looking in, I struggled for a while.

The documentary takes it’s title from one of the subjects, who talks about surfing the cold waters of Ocean Beach in San Francisco, CA.

This type of surfing is dangerous in a way that is difficult to understand. Why risk your life to ride a wave for 30 seconds and then fight back out in enormous surf to do it again and again?  It reminded me in many ways of Matt Sheridan’s Birdmen: The Original Dream of Human Flight, which is about wing-suit base jumping. The peril these athletes face forces them to be completely present in the moment. They must be mindful in a way that most people can only hope for, because if they aren’t, death is lurking.

It Ain’t Pretty paints a picture of strength, passion and perseverance that is beautiful and sad at the same time. These women are surfing, not for riches or glory, but out of some deep desire to connect with the ocean and each other.  However, because the surf business is about bikinis and sex these women lag behind in terms of endorsement and fame.  Almost all of the them have “day jobs”.

Despite being among the greatest athletes in their sport, they can’t devote themselves to it full time. All of them, at one point of another talk about the bonds of sisterhood that form with their surfing cohorts.

I could write for days about the feminist side of this movie. However, whenever I try I just feel inadequate. A  forty-something white man can’t credibly moralize about the importance of women in society and how women like this should be lauded because they can inspire in ways that others can’t or don’t… See I did it again.

Suffice it to say, that’s the real message here.

Social commentary aside, the surf footage is excellent. This is northern California big wave surfing, so it ain’t pretty.  You are used to seeing surf footage that is shot close up in crystal blue water.  Almost all of the surf footage you see in this film is shot from a distance. (Some Go Pro footage aside) This is an important choice, because it is only from a distance you can see how shockingly massive these waves are and truly understand the moment to moment danger these women face.  The water is dark and foreboding. The surfers wear full wet suits because the temperatures are frigid. There is nothing casual here. They are out there because they want it.

It Ain’t Pretty hits on all cylinders, saving an oddly Fresh Prince of Bel Air type opening sequence.  It is passionate, well constructed, reasonably well edited and conveys it’s message without shoving it down the viewer’s throat.  If you are a feminist and like scary surf footage this is a film for you.  If you are a casual observer I encourage you to watch this film. It says a lot about who these women are but much more about society.

4 out of 5 stars

Story by Jay Scherick, David Ronn,

Starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron,
Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach,
Jon Bass, Ilfenesh Hadera, Priyanka Chopra

Baywatch is the latest remake of a beloved, yet ridiculous TV show of my youth that was an international sensation.

Director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) captures the vibe of Coppertone infused “procedural” show that launched the careers of several of the 90’s biggest model/actress, and made David Hasselhoff a household name for a second time.

This film remake is no less absurd than it’s tv predecessor, but it’s tongue is firmly in its proverbial cheek the whole time.

The original formula still holds, a group of lifeguards compelled to go beyond their job descriptions to fight crime, drugs, and evil commercial take-overs to protect the people of their beach and the surrounding community. Who needs cops?  They’re lifeguards!  They got this.

To paraphrase a line from the film; it sounds like a show with a highly improvable storyline that is entirely entertaining.

Dwayne Johnson takes the baton from Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon, head lifeguard.  He’s everyone’s best buddy, earnest leader, and all around good guy.

In true Baywatch fashion he is backed up by a team of strong women: Summer, the new recruit (Alexandra Daddario); C.J., the heart of the team (Kelly Rohrbach); and Stephanie, the stern second in command (Ilfenesh Hadera).

Jon Bass is brought into play Ronnie, the heavy set, every man that is the comic relief.  Zac Efron rounds out the team as pretty boy Matt Brody, reluctant recruit and verbal punching bag. Our beautiful, but unqualified team works to uncover the drug trafficking of Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra), a successful business women with most of the communities politicians in her pocket.

If you have seen one episode of Baywatch the TV show, then you have seen them all. The movie Baywatch takes all your 80’s film and TV tropes and delivers them with a heavy helping of self awareness. It turns the tropes on their heads and makes it a comedy that is relevant for a new generation. The lovely ladies are the ones sexualizing their male counterparts. The fat kid is on the team to make us laugh, but his awkwardness never makes him the outsider.  The story isn’t subtle, and it isn’t meant to be. It is chock full of visual gags and body humor that is the staple of these kind of comedies.

Yet, somehow the screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift spin the empty mental-calorie cotton candy of a story into a laugh out loud comedy.  The cast helps to sell it with their wink-wink delivery, and what has to be a personal love of the source material.  Baywatch is peppered with verbal Easter eggs and a couple of cameos that are sure to please fans of the original show. The film is nothing more than just under two hours of fun, and you can’t really ask more of it than that.

Baywatch is the Twinkie you know you shouldn’t eat.  It’s a 100 percent artificial, but you enjoy every bite.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ (review)

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer
Screenplay by Jeff Nathanson
Story by Jeff Nathanson, Terry Rossio
Based on Pirates of the Caribbean by Walt Disney
Characters by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio,
Stuart Beattie, Jay Wolpert
Directed by Joachim Rønning, Espen Sandberg
Starring Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem,
Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario,
Kevin McNally, Geoffrey Rush,
Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley

When Disney decided to start building films based on popular rides (i.e. Mission to Mars, Tower of Terror, The Country Bears, etc.) not even they could have imagined the wild success of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Spanning 14 years, the antics of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) have kept audiences coming back for the formula of haunted pirate lore plus lavish action scenes plus slurred one-liners.

But just like a person can only ride the teacups for so many times before getting a bit nauseous, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales may make you ready to get off the ride.

This installation finds young Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) searching for a way to free his father from the task of helming the Flying Dutchman. Pirate lore tells of the Trident of Poseidon, a magical relic that can break any curse of the sea. In his quest to track down Jack Sparrow to help him find it, Turner encounters the dreaded ghost Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) who is determined to take revenge on Captain Jack. With navigating help from witty astronomer Carina (Kaya Scodelario) and a few old friends, they race to beat the tides of a fate long coming.

We are in the fifth movie of the franchise and it is showing wear around the edges. While most of the assorted crew are back, the mirth and joy are not at the levels you would expect. Jokes did not land as well as they would have if this was the second or third outing. The action scenes are still relatively good, with an opening bank heist that reminds us of the grand scale of these movies. But we can see everything coming from a mile away and it is more exhausting than comforting.

When newcomer Carina says that she is following clues left by Galileo Galilei, who only mapped the stars to find this treasure, you could almost hear the eyes rolling in the theater. There are enough actual pirate and sea-faring legends to stretch out without having to dabble in actual history. New characters and settings are brought in for mere minutes without significantly adding to the story.

In a movie already 20 minutes too long, you are left wondering why the time was wasted on these distractions that do literally nothing for the story. These kinds of odd missteps show a lack of understanding from screenwriter Jeff Nathanson ,who is new to the series and does not seem to grasp the elements that have kept it worth the ticket price.

On the other hand, Carina’s character delivers the strong and independent female lead that we can always look forward to in this series. I still would have traded the care they gave her for better treatment on the story as a whole.

The ever-competing captains Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) are back but both are just shadows of themselves. Depp does a better job of pulling out the charm as the story goes on, but Rush never seems to really engage with his role and turns in something a bit more paint-by-numbers. Javier Bardem seems to be having fun as Captain Salazar but there is nothing particularly memorable about his performance, nor that of the eager and puppy-eyed Brenton Thwaites.

Kaya Scodelario gave one of the best performances, and her sharp retorts along with passionate demands for respect as a scholar/scientist come across energetic and genuine. Hopefully she will be in whatever inevitably follows (stay till the end for a brief teaser).

Round and round we go on this journey, always starting at the same place (someone is mad at Jack!) and ending only a few feet before a full circle (someone is less mad at Jack and/or dead).

While this may not be worth the six years we’ve waited in line, I’m somehow still willing to get on for old times’ sake.

How To Stream Your Favorite Netflix Shows From Abroad

0
0

Today’s world of expensive cable subscriptions means more and more people are looking to save money where they can. Online streaming services which only cost a few dollars a month are great ways to “cut the cord” and enjoy TV from anywhere.

The most popular of these streaming services is Netflix. With over 93 million subscribers and the ability to shed nearly 160 hours of TV commercials annually, it’s easy to see why people love to watch Netflix. The streaming giant has also heavily invested in original content, introducing award-winning shows like Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, and Narcos.

Netflix also went launched globally in 2016, which roughly coincides with the huge jump in popularity and subscriber amounts. However, certain shows and movies that are available on the US version of Netflix aren’t available everywhere. Due to copyright restrictions and licensing deals, the Netflix catalog in certain regions is vastly different than what is available in the US or even Canada.

So, what kind of content isn’t available everywhere? A great example of a TV show is The Office (US version) not being available in any countries outside of the US and Canada. This example, however, is just one of many! Further research shows residents of Spain only get 23% of the full Netflix catalog while Hong Kong only sees about 9% (!) of total Netflix content.

What does this mean?

Simply put, if you are a US resident traveling overseas or living in a foreign country, you won’t have access to the same shows and movies you can access back home.  Additionally, subscribers outside of the US are given much less “bang for the buck” in terms of content (especially those folks in Hong Kong!)

Do you fall into any of these categories? Are you being cheated out of watching your favorite TV shows or movies? Is there any way to get around these geo-restrictions and access the full Netflix catalog?

Luckily, there is a great way to unblock US Netflix and the full catalog from anywhere in the world. A virtual private network (VPN for short) allows you to change your device location to unblock content and services that may not be available in your area.

A VPN creates a secure “tunnel” between your device and the internet, effectively hiding all data and making it appear that you are in a location that you select when enabling the VPN on your device. Additional benefits of a VPN are the secure encryption of your data and the ability to evade censorship when using the internet.

In short, using a Netflix VPN allows you to access the entire Netflix catalog from anywhere in the world!

How to watch Netflix using a VPN

Unblocking Netflix with a VPN is a relatively quick process that shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes from start to finish. You will need an internet-connected device (compatible with Netflix), a Netflix VPN service, and of course, a Netflix subscription (the region doesn’t matter).

  • Make sure you are logged out of Netflix before getting started!
  • Choose a Netflix VPN provider that matches your budget and needs.
  • Sign up and pay for the VPN service you selected.
  • Download and install the VPN software on your device you use to watch Netflix.
  • Connect to a US VPN server using the VPN software you installed.
  • Open Netflix, log in, and start streaming content without any restrictions!

Due to Netflix’s policy against using a proxy or VPN (I’ll touch on this further down), there is an ongoing game of cat and mouse going on between VPN services and Netflix.  If a certain VPN service doesn’t work (aka Netflix knows that you are connected to a VPN and blocks you), connecting to a different US VPN server usually solves this issue.

Is unblocking US Netflix legal?

Using a VPN to access the US version (or any other region) of Netflix is a bit of a gray area that isn’t explicitly illegal. That being said, Netflix recently added a new clause to the official Terms of Service which strictly prohibits the use of VPNs and threatens to terminate subscriptions which do so.

While this might sound threatening, the reality is that Netflix hasn’t really followed through with this policy, instead preferring the difficult tactic of reactively blocking VPN servers that are used to access Netflix.

This reactive blocking also means that VPN providers have to adapt to servers getting blocked, which is why the best Netflix VPN services are constantly updating and introducing new servers and technology.

Nonetheless, licensing deals and copyrights exist for a reason, so unblocking geo-restricted content still comes with a (very small) chance of being caught. Much like P2P downloads (or torrents), rights holders can choose to take action against you. Proceed at your own risk!

Conclusion

Watching Netflix and other online streaming services are just one of the many great benefits of the internet and globalization. As the popularity of online streaming continues to surge upwards, hopping on the Netflix bandwagon is an awesome way to save money and still enjoy great content.

The geo-restrictions of Netflix are disappointing for those outside of the US, but aren’t conclusive and can be easily bypassed by using a VPN as described above. Use a Netflix VPN service and enjoy all the content you want, from anywhere in the world!

‘Manifesto’ (review)

Produced, Written and Directed
by Julian Rosefeldt

Starring Cate Blanchett

A movie in which Cate Blanchett plays different characters whose dialogue is almost entirely statements about art theory? Sounds like a snooze, right?

And yet, somehow, the first film from visual artist Julian Rosefeldt managed to keep my interest despite the absence of a plot. It also managed to be less pretentious, less arty and far less boring than, say, Terrence Malick’s virtually plotless, self-indulgently unscripted Knight of Cups, a movie where I was counting the seconds until it ended.

This film has something to say (hence the title) and you might not be entertained by all the verbiage, but there is much more going on than just what is being said.

Despite a low budget, the film is visually stunning, with extraordinary found locations like an abandoned factory and a strangely retro futuristic lab.

The number one appeal is, of course, Blanchett herself. The two-time Oscar winner makes a compelling chameleon as she transforms from homeless Scottish old man to Russian dance diva to grade school teacher to anchorwoman.

In each scenario, we’re given a few moments to establish each character in their own setting and see Blanchett really inhabiting the physicality of each person before she starts talking about art. Her look changes, her stance changes, her smile changes. And she displays a virtuoso command of several accents. You almost wish each character was starring in their own proper movie — for this really isn’t a movie at all, strictly speaking — until you get caught up in the texture and humor of each setting. (Or you may not! You may be bored silly.)

As a Russian diva, she barks at a group of dancers, “Purge the world of dead art.”

As a woman moving trash with a crane, she muses about architecture.

As a puppeteer (with a puppet that’s a miniature of herself), she talks about the subconscious.

As a flawlessly coiffed red-haired newscaster, she begins her broadcast with “Good evening. All current art is fake.” She then begins an amusing exchange with herself. (“Kate?” “Thanks, Kate”) as an on-the-scene reporter holding an umbrella in the pouring rain while discussing conceptual art.

As a teacher to a group of antsy grade school students, she instructs them that “nothing is original,” and urges them to remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from — it’s where you take them to.”

The film also becomes a study on the art of speaking.

How a woman addresses her cultured guests is entirely different than how a student speaks gently to her grade-school students or the practiced, professional cadence of a newswoman. Or how a diva barks at the dancers who are disappointing her. (The dance scene, by the way, is one of the film’s highlights, with a group of silver-clad hoofers who look like a cross between a Busby Berkeley movie and a Xenomorph.)

Other funny scenes: Watching a Southern mom call her family to dinner and then begin to say grace. Even though all their heads are bowed and eyes closed, she offers up not a prayer, but what she wants out of art. “I am for an art…” she repeats like a mantra, describing art that gets dirty and worn and lived-in. We have to laugh at the discomfort of her young boys and husband as they shift uncomfortably while waiting for her to finish. The film intercuts between the characters throughout, so occasionally we cut back to the seemingly never-ending discourse still in progress!

And then there’s a funeral where Blanchett (sporting a red bob that makes her a dead ringer for a young Shirley MacLaine) lectures the mourners about Dada, and then proceeds to call them all idiots.

I did get impatient here and there and if a plot had broken out, I wouldn’t have minded. But overall, I was surprised how much I liked Manifesto. However, it’s clearly not for everyone. It helps if you’re a big Blanchett fan. And if you’re an artist or art scholar, there are plenty of in-jokes to make you laugh. The audience I saw it with laughed a lot.

Spending so much time thinking about the nature of art gave me a new eye for my surroundings as I walked back to my car. A movie that can alter your perception of reality, even for a moment, is a win in my book.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Manifesto opens May 26 in Los Angeles and then will expand to other cities

‘Smokey and the Bandit’ 40th Anniversary Screening Reaffirms Its Legacy

0
0

Smokey and the Bandit is a film that arguably changed pop culture in the 70’s and yet is largely forgotten by today’s audiences.

This is a shame as the film is now coming up on it’s 40th anniversary and Fathom Events, Universal Pictures and Turner Classic Movies have pulled out an amazing print to celebrate.

Smokey and the Bandit is a film of it’s time (of this there is no doubt) but it also started more than a few trends and ushered in a new wave of cinema.

Smokey and the Bandit is about beer “bootlegging”, car chases, flouting of the law and fun.

Two rich cats hire “The Bandit” and his truck driver partner “Snowman” to deliver 400 cases of Coors Beer from Texarkana to Atlanta in 28 hours for the “prize” of $80,000.

Why all this for Coors?

Well lets travel back in time a bit. In 1977 Coors was really a regional beer and it was illegal for it to be sold East of Texas which created a huge bounty on smuggling of Coors over state lines. In the film this is an almost impossible task but “The Bandit” has a reputation to uphold (along with really needing the money). Through his adventure he encounters a runaway bride, a rogue lawman and just about every police officer between Texarkana and Atalanta.

The movie stars Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed, Sally Field, Paul Williams, Pat McCormick and Jackie Gleason and was just behind Star Wars in 1977 box office take.

Yeah, this movie made more money than Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Saturday Night Fever, and James Bond (The Spy Who Loved Me). At a cost of 3.3 Million (plus a million for Reynolds) it brought in almost $200 Million dollars (1977 dollars).

With the movie being a comedy you can guess there are plenty of antics and honestly genuine humor throughout. Jackie Gleason ad libs his entire role creating some really funny moments. Reynolds is less of a character and more charisma personified. His confident arrogant swagger is infectious. Reed is the second banana Snowman who gives an enthusiastic performance despite not really being an actor. Fields has the thankless role of being both the damsel in distress and the emotional center of the film and she shines where another actress may have faltered.

Outside of the human cast there is the major draw the film had… cars and lots of destruction. Director Hal Needham started as a stuntman and brings that expertise with him in creating a cavalcade of mayhem and chaos with cars exploding, falling, jumping, spinning and generally doing things cars should not be doing. This ends up creating an atmosphere of fun and insanity that just works.

What was it about the film which allowed it to hit so hard into the center of American culture the way it did?

Well first off the CB craze was already in full swing at this time and Smokey and the Bandit only made it more popular. Then you have that the so called “Hicksploitation” boom was already popular at the box office and Smokey and the Bandit combines this with action and fun. The movie was such a success that after the films’ release sales of the Iconic Firebird Trans-Am used in the movie went up almost 60% the following year.

Smokey and the Bandit would be imitated almost immediately by others hoping to cash in and itself had 2 theatrical sequels (with Smokey and the Bandit III being a disaster of epic proportions) and even in 1994 a series of four TV movies were made with Brian Bloom taking over for Burt Reynolds.

What makes the film work is that is exactly what it sets out to be. There is no high minded attempt at subtext or concern with telling a deep story. Smokey and the Bandit is about having fun, nothing more and nothing less. The film has it’s share of admirers among them Alfred Hitchcock who called Smokey and the Bandit a “guilty pleasure” of his and was in fact the final film he screened prior to his death.

Smokey and the Bandit may be lost on the film goer of today though. At the screening I attended there was a sizeable crowd… and not a single one of them was under 30. I guess kids and teens don’t care about the OTHER film that defined cinema from 1977.

Fathom Events brought out an exquisite print of the movie to celebrate this monumentous occasion. If you missed it you should at least check out the film on DVD or Blu-ray. It really brings you to another time… a time when a PG movie could have dozens and dozens of swears, some cringe inducing terms used casually (“fag” being the main one), racial humor that would not be tolerated today and a time when what is now-called sexual assault was then called “a joke”.

Welcome To The Planet: Spoiled by Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp’s ‘Wonder Woman’

Wonder Woman, Liam Sharp and Greg Rucka, I salute you for delivering an emotional storyline and finale. We are really getting spoiled by how fantastic this book is.

Then we have Hong Kong Phooey and Scooby-Doo in a Sholly Fisch written tale that can only be described as genius.

Zod ‘rears’ his evil head in Superman, while the JLA learn that their superpowers aren’t the sum of who they are.

Kyle makes a sacrifice that could change him forever whatever his decision is and Constantine is being plotted against by nearly everyone he knows.

A tangled web indeed, but this is my look into the DC Universe this week.

Wonder Woman #23
‘The Truth’ – The Conclusion
Written by Greg Rucka

Cover by Liam Sharp & Laura Martin

Ares, God Of War, of all people reveals the long sought after truth that Diana seeks.  Along with it the plot his sons had hatched to manipulate all they came in contact with to create a web of lies.

Veronica Cale must make a sacrifice as must Diana, but in doing so they will both be set free. Diana has never been closer to home but with the future now clear was it truly worth it?

I don’t know what to say, I should feel elated that the truth has come out and a new beginning has arrived for Diana, but I feel sad.

That scene where Hippolyta and Diana are almost reunited broke me. Wonder Woman has been consistently good since Rebirth, with the story and art at an all time high.

To see this resolution, this unexpected twist play out, revealing the fates of Veronica’s daughter and Ares’ children was nothing short of brilliant.

How this will effect Diana in the future is anyone’s guess, but if this quality continues it’s sure to be a memorable journey.

The Hellblazer #10
‘The Smokeless Fire’ part 4
Written by Simon Oliver

Cover by Riley Rossmo

They may have been double crossed by Misabel, but John and Mercury are determined to retrieve the secrets of the journal before they fall into the wrong hands.

Mercury discovers that Marid’s plot is to rebuild Solomon’s Machine, a machine that will merge the world of the Djinn with our own, so she has drama of her own to deal with.

Throw in a nightclub or deadly lycanthropes and the arrival of Papa Midnight and things get even more complicated.

This trip around Europe is not proving a pleasant one for Constantine!

The change in art has galvanised the storyline.

Smokeless Fire has been an awkward storyline so far playing the three storylines of Marid’s plot, Mercury’s awakening and Constantine’s search for the journal along with the art chopping and changing has made it a difficult read. I am glad the flashbacks are gone but to be honest after four chapters, all I want is for this story to stop dancing around and get right to the real meat & potatoes.

Action Comics #980
‘Revenge’ Part 2

Written by Dan Jurgens
Pencils Patch Zircher

Cover by Clay Mann & Tomeu Morey

After the terrible discovery in the back up Fortress, Superman races to check on Lois and Jon before seeking out Batman.  Superman informs him about the escape of several of his deadliest foes now joining forces, but Batman reveals that there is more to this than a mere escape, they are trying to steal something from Belle Reve.

Amanda Waller has a secret Kryptonian weapon hidden inside and both the Revenge Squad and Superman are in race to get to it first. One to recruit it, the other to capture it.  Can Superman succeed?

I’m not sure it needed the Batman cameo and it would have been nice to see the Henshaw Cyborg’s/Zor El Cyborg explained but aside from those niggles this was a pretty good follow up to last issue.

It feels a little like it may have been written before the ‘Black Dawn’ Superman storyline was written because the conflict between Lois and Jon felt a little odd after such a traumatic altercation with Manchester Black and the citizens of Hamilton County.

I digress, as we now have the introduction of yet another General Zod, and this time we can only hope they get him right.

The Revenge Squad is shaping up to be deadlier than ever before and because of that the anticipation in me grows for that inevitable conflict!

Blue Beetle #9
‘Life, Death & Absolute Chaos!’
Written by Keith Giffen & J.M. DeMatteis
Pencils Scott Kolins
Cover by Scott Kolins

The battle with the evil entity that was once Arion reaches a climatic end!

While Ted reaches out to Keven, Omac and Brother Eye on stopping the invasion. Jaime leads the team to the depths of the the caverns beneath El Paso in hopes of reuniting Kent Nelson with the helmet of Fate.

Together they must take on Arion in his terrifying new form and Jaime must make a decision about his future.

This issue had everything and the kitchen sink.

That is a good thing as we enjoy a love letter to Jack Kirby in this title (which becomes clearer with each passing issue)

We now have Jaime about to make an active step towards claiming the mantle of Blue Beetle but now OMAC, Brother Eye, Ted Kord and Dr. Fate are banding together to take out the creature formerly known as Arion. Sounds completely bizarre but couple that with the frenetic art of Kolins and you definitely have something completely bizarre but undeniably genius.

Now that the story is on track to a proper conclusion it is really coming together.

Scooby-Doo Team-Up #26
‘Enter The Dragon, Exit Scooby Doo’
Written by Sholly Fisch
Pencils Scott Jeralds
Cover by Scott Jeralds & Silvana Brys

The Mystery, Inc. gang have gone up against many ghouls, ghosts, goblins and con men but when sinister dragons with superior martial arts skills pose a threat only a mild mannered janitor can help them.

It also helps that he’s the Number One Super-Guy, Hong Kong Phooey! Two hounds for the price of one will surely save the day.

Superb art and an equally fun coupling of two of Hanna Barbera’s most beloved series.

If the modernisation titles aren’t working or you then embrace these Scooby books as a wonderful look back at the classic take.

Fisch does an great job of flipping the old formula on its head and making the stories feel fresh and new.

The spotlight may be on Scooby and the gang but it was a real kick to see Hong Kong Phooey brought to life once more and with some spot artwork to match.

A great family book that us oldies can enjoy too.

Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps #21
‘The Prism Of Time’ Conclusion: ‘Gauntle’
Written by Robert Venditti
Pencils V Ken Marion
Inks Dexter Vines
Cover by Ethan Van Sciver & Jason Wright

As Rip & Hal race to foil the future. The combined might of the green and yellow lanterns – minus their power, go to fight Sarko and his crystal creatures using their new military style skills.

Kyle uses Rips ring to scan Sarko’s lineage and discovers the key to stopping him, but it is a sacrifice with ramifications that might be even worse for the Corps than the future Rip wants to stop.

I can’t believe it’s over. After that build up which promised something huge, with ramifications for both Yellow & Green Lanterns while also tying up the lose end of the Gauntlet’s ‘fate’ it just felt like it was resolved way too fast.

I know, a contradiction as I talk a lot about how I hate long drawn out stories, but this had mileage to tap into. Sarko barely put his plans into action and that final revelation felt forced as it was so fast. I think if there were at least another two issues this could have been fleshed out more and in turn once the secret was revealed the impact would have been felt far more.

The question of whether you’d kill Hitler as a child if you had the opportunity was played out and though I could see it coming from a mile off, it was still an enjoyable read.

Justice League Of America #7
‘Terrorstrike’
Written by Steve Orlando
Pencils Jamal Campbell
Cover by Ivan Reis, Joe Prado & Marcelo Maiolo

The Ray and Vixen do their best to reach out to the community while Batman works on the Secret Sanctuary.

After the recent events have drawn Ryan and Caitlin closer together their bond is put to the test against a deadly foe.

While Atom & Frost grow closer, Lobo and Black Canary can’t be farther apart. Meanwhile, Amanda Waller plots to wreak revenge on Killer Frost and her team mates.

The formula continues and it is one that works. I mentioned this all in my last review of the title but the characters are this books strength as opposed to the regular League where it is mostly about juggling power sets.

The scenes with Caitlin and Ryan were beautifully written and made their bond seem so natural and the Lobo scenes wit Canary were a mirror of those. I like that the storyline is bringing back elements of Justice League vs Suicide Squad because this team has an equal dark history with Amanda Waller.

Looney Tunes #237
‘Duck Dodgers & The Reboot Of The 24½th Century’, ‘Mars Needs Chickens!’, ‘Blow, Forghorn, Blow’
Written by Derek Fridolfs, Jesse LeonMcCann & Sam Agro
Pencils Dave Alvarez, Walter Carzon & Leo Batic
Inks Ruben Torreiro & Horacio Ottolino
Cover by Derek Fridolfs & Candace Schinzler-Bell

Duck Dodgers has always been the 24½th century’s greatest hero, that is until Eager Young Space Cadet, is just promoted to the rank of Commander!

Outranked and beak out of joint, Duck Dodgers must obey his new superior and they go on a dangerous mission to discover the secrets of…Planet Y!

Meanwhile Foghorn Leghorn must outsmart Marvin and his martians, for the sake of all chicken-kind.

Then Dawg & Foghorn must match their wits with a mischievous little chicken thief!

The stories with three equally entertaining stories. By far the most enjoyable story of the three was Duck Dodgers but Foghorn and Dawg up against a conniving weasel is a close second. My only negative is that these stories are way too short!

Welcome to Graphic Breakdown!

Summer is around the corner! Let’s talk about some comics currently on stands!

Deathstroke #19
Written by Christopher Priest
Illustrated by Carlo Pagulayan

This issue made me a bit sad. It’s still a great issue, don’t get me wrong. It’s part of the “Lazarus Contract” storyline currently raging through the Titans books. It’s a good issue, but I just rather this book not be part of a crossover. It’s too unique a book to be a part of that.

The Titans in this issue basically are trying to stop Slade from destroying the world. Can they succeed? Or will Slade inadvertently destroy everything?

There are some great action sequences in this issue. The opening sequence with the Flash and Slade running at super speed is one of the coolest scenes this year.

Priest keeps the action and story flowing throughout. This book still should be by itself, apart from the Titans books. Oh well. It’ll return to that format soon.

RATING: B+

Detective Comics #957
Written by James Tynion IV and Christopher Sebela
Illustrated by Carmen Carnero

This issue is the true definition of the term “fill-in issue.”

After a spectacular few months over at Detective Comics, Tynion and gang needed a break apparently. It’s forgivable but it doesn’t make for great comics.

This issue focuses on The Spoiler. She battles against a generic baddie named The Wrath. There’s nothing too interesting as she works up to facing off with him. There’s a lot that is uninteresting in here in truth.

It’s a very generic issue basically. The writing isn’t very defined. The story moves at a standard pace and there is nothing new and exciting going on here.

The artwork isn’t that good either. Okay, let’s move on. Get them next month, guys!

I know you have it in you.

Suicide Squad #18
Written by Rob Williams
Illustrated by Tony S. Daniel

This is the issue that Zoe goes nuts. That’s the best way I can describe it.

The Suicide Squad have to turn around and rein this psychopath in. He has some crazy ideas for this world.

Those ideas are pretty bananas. Williams does a good job here of showing just how mad Zod is.

He also does a good job of facing the Suicide Squad against him. They really are going on a Suicide mission here and it’s kind of cool.

The art by Daniel is fantastic for what’s going on. Daniel gives the art great pacing and it’s truly dynamic. This is a good issue indeed. I wish they kept every issue at this pace.

Kamandi Challenge #5
Written by Bill Willingham
Illustrated by Ivan Reis

This book keeps trucking along with a new creative team each month picking up from the previous months creative team. It’s thrilling to read.

I’ve said it before that I’m not the biggest Kamandi fan, but this is something truly cool.

In this issue, Kamandi meets a tiger detective who provides him with some clues of where his parents might be. It’s a well written issue that focuses on character. It’s enjoyable and it’s a little deeper than the previous issues have been.

The art by Reis is truly stunning. There is passion and detail on every page. You can almost smell and breathe in the environments he creates.

This is a good issue in a solid series. Pick this up. It deserves to be read.

RATING: B+

Mother Panic #7|
Written by Jody Houser
Illustrated by John Paul Leon

Jody Houser is one of the best new talents to emerge in the last few years. She’s a great writer and writes some of the more original comic books on the stands. This is a great example of that.

A person that Mother Panic saved is having problems again. This leads to a really nicely written issue that focuses on her character.

Mother Panic has to look deep inside herself to determine just what her place in the world is.

Meanwhile, has Batman taken an interest in her?

The art here is okay. I miss Tommy Lee Edwards on the art. John Paul Leon has never been one of my favorites. He’s the third artist in seven issues and he’s radically different from the other two.

So, while the character is well written and consistent, the art isn’t. It makes it a difficult and frustrating read at times. A consistent artist may help this book be a break out hit as well.

RATING: B

Batman Beyond #8
Written by Dan Jurgens
Illustrated by Bernard Chang

It’s another fine issue over at Batman Beyond!

This is a title that has been damn enjoyable the last seven issues and this one is no different. Kudos to Dan Jurgens for keeping the book fun and adventurous.

Terry has to travel to Tibet to rescue Bruce Wayne from the League of Assassins. He finally gets to meet Ra’s Al Ghul in this issue. The meeting is quite eventful as well.

There is a cool surprise at the end of the book. I didn’t even see it coming. I even thought to myself: “Damn that was clever!”

The story was great and the art by Chang was good. The story and excitement were both high.

An underrated book in DC’s Rebirth line.

RATING: B+

Batgirl #11
Written by Hope Larson
Illustrated by Chris Wildgoose

Chris Wildgoose really has kept this book steamrolling along. He has an energy to his art we haven’t seen in a while. The work is fast paced, and well composed. The action scenes are exciting to say the least. He also makes talking scenes very exciting to look at as well.

This is the finale to the “Son of Penguin” storyline.

Hope Larson does a really great job writing this title here. The last two pages were horrifying to me. I don’t want to spoil it, but look at he ambulance scene. That’s good writing right there.

This is a solid book. While there may be some that are better, it’s entertaining none the less.

Give it a shot and pick it up.

RATING: B

Batman/The Shadow #2
Written by Scott Snyder and Steve Orlando
Illustrated by Riley Rossmo

I loved the first issue of this series. I’m happy to report that I loved the second issue of the series just as much, If not more. There is a classic story going on here and I can’t get enough of it.

In this second issue, The Shadow must convince Batman of his innocence so they can team up against The Stag! It’s a simple premise but it’s done so well. The opening fight between Batman and the Shadow gave me goosebumps. It’s super cool.

Riley Rossmo has taken these two characters and updated their looks with his art style. It’s full of verve and crazy energy. It works wonderfully. He takes the script and makes some amazing art in tandem with it.

Pick this up. It’s one of the best of the year.
