William Dozier, The Super Bat Chief

0
0
"I was taken aback, Batman was simply not my ken. I have always been associated with loftier projects."
– William Dozier

On a cross-country flight from New York to Los Angeles in early 1966, a man sitting in first class drew more than a few curious looks from his fellow passengers.

The reason for the smirks and sideways glances was that this well-dressed, well-groomed, seemingly successful man spent the flight reading through a stack of comic books.

Little did anyone know that he was actually doing research for ABC.

The six comics that Dozier read on that flight
William Dozier was born in Omaha, Nebraska on February 13, 1908.

After graduation from Creighton University, Dozier moved to New York focused on becoming a talent agent.

It wasn’t long, however, before Hollywood’s siren song began calling him away from New York. His keen business sense, his ability to find good talent and his natural negotiating skills drew attention and respect from studio executives.

In a few years, Dozier was appointed the head of Paramount's story and writing department where he oversaw such notable legends as Billy Wilder and Preston Sturges.

By 1950, Dozier’s resume included RKO, Columbia and MGM. From 1951 to 1959, Dozier was known as CBS’ chief of West Coast programming for television. It was at this time that Dozier began to enjoy another title, that of executive producer.

While his career was on an ever-constant upward climb, his personal life was not as easily traversed. His first marriage in 1929 ended in divorce. From 1946 to 1951, Dozier’s second marriage was to actress Joan Fontaine, whom had received the 1941 Best Actress Oscar for Suspicion, a union which made Olivia de Havilland his sister-in-law. His third and final marriage in 1953 was to former Gone With The Wind actress Ann Rutherford.

Dozier left CBS in the early 1960’s to form his own production company, Greenway Productions, setting up shop at Twentieth Century Fox. His first series, The Loner, a western penned by Rod Serling, began with high hopes, but failed to wow television viewers and it was quickly canceled. Following this, Dozier received a call from ABC vice president of program developing, Doug Kramer, to fly out to New York for a meeting.

ABC had recently acquired the television rights to Batman and Kramer wanted to know if Dozier was interested in producing. Dozier had never read a Batman comic book in his life, but, as a businessman, he was open to the idea and spent the entire flight back to LA reading a stack of Batman comic books.

Back in Los Angeles, Dozier called Kramer and said that Greenway would produce the show, under one condition: That the show be a unique mixture of camp for the adults and adventure for the kids. This formula went on to create one of the biggest television sensations since Disney’s Davy Crockett.

"I appreciate this opportunity, Mr. Dozier, but maybe we could, ya know, get better costumes. I mean, these feel like robes." "Great idea, Adam!"

From 1966 to 1968, the Batman craze boosted both ABC ratings and the sales of comic books.

In its first year alone, it resulted in a revenue close to $75,000,000 for sale of Batman merchandise.

As producer and uncredited narrator of Batman, Dozier had not only become television’s king of camp, but he was responsible for adding the phrase, “Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!” to the American lexicon. Riding his success, he quickly spearheaded another series, The Green Hornet, starring Van Williams and a then unknown Asian actor named Bruce Lee. The show failed to be a hit and it wasn’t long before television’s honeymoon with camp had run its course. This was at the time when Dozier was filming another television show pilot for a series based on Dick Tracy.

After decades of focusing on work, Dozier went into semi-retirement, spending more time at home with wife Ann. Never able to stay clear of the business, though, Dozier was always willing to take on the occasional acting job, everything from Eight Is Enough to American Gigilo (which, based on Dozier’s constant marriages, seemed an appropriate choice.)

William Dozier, the producer with the Droopy Dog face, died in 1991 in Santa Monica, CA.

A sexier version of Mitch McConnell

Working behind-the-scenes offers very little of the glitz and on-street recognition that actors receive.

Rod Serling became most known for being an on-screen narrator than being a producer and talented writer, Lorne Michaels inserted himself into sketches and helped make him, “that SNL producer guy.”

Dozier may be forever known (or unknown) as the narrator for the tales of a somewhat effeminate and paunchy Batman, but he was one of the great producers and helped turn the fledgling medium of television into a worldwide staple.

Rumors of the Death of DVD Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

0
0
Every few months, I click upon an article online written by some overeager media geek announcing the death of the DVD by digital streaming.

These puff pieces are usually written with much conviction and enthusiasm for the digital-streaming model.

Rarely do these ramblings address the serious movie lover who values quality audio and video presentation and they are, tellingly, uniformly oblivious to the many intolerable pitfalls of digital streaming’s imperfect delivery apparatus, the Internet.

When media writers make sweeping idiotic statements—such as “The DVD is dead. And you helped kill it!”—I cannot help but wonder if writers like Gary Susman of AOL/Moviefone (the author of this particularly inane nugget) are secretly stumping for Microsoft and are the ones wielding the dagger aimed squarely at the heart of DVD.

The software giant quietly staked out a spot on the sidelines of the Blu-ray-versus-HD-DVD format war with an eye on the NEXT phase of home video evolution: a future dominated by high-definition digital streaming instead of actual physical media.

Perhaps none-too-coincidentally, Microsoft financed a massive purchase of AOL technical patents just days after the Moviefone article ran.

It certainly wouldn’t hurt Microsoft’s prospects of dominating online streaming—nor would it hinder AOL’s standing in their eyes—for AOL’s news division to run a story urging reactionary folks to abandon their DVD players and succumb to the inevitability of a world where digital media and information is disseminated and consumed solely via the Internet.

Of course, this is all assuming you’ve got a reliable and affordable high-speed Internet connection to begin with (you’d be surprised to learn how much of the U.S. remains underserved in this respect). Plus, I truly doubt the days of unlimited data plans are infinite. What happens if/when broadband caps are eased and data usage rates skyrocket?

To the film studios, streaming makes a lot of financial sense: it’s virtually an all-profit enterprise, without the overhead costs associated with DVD duplication, printing, packaging, shipping and storage. But film studios make far more money on DVD sales than they do on digital streaming, so I find it inconceivable that they’d ever willingly give up a money-maker with such relatively meager overhead. I find digital streaming to be a convenient tool to have handy and it coexists nicely with disc-based media, but to think Internet-based digital streaming could actually ever REPLACE physical media is absurd, even if we had the proper infrastructure in this country to support such an endeavor. Which we don’t.

Plus, computers crash, hard drives fail and Internet viruses and PC worms are unleashed with alarming regularly.

By the way, the world leaders in high-speed Internet service are, in order, South Korea, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Latvia. Japan ranks #6. The U.S. comes in at an embarrassing 26th globally, just behind Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Congo. Just a little perspective check. No further evidence ought to be required in the case against digital streaming.

But there are many more strikes against streaming.

Even the most reliable high-speed Internet service is susceptible to power outages, and streaming is rife with instances of sluggish buffering, unpredictable technical snafus, and gross compression artifacts. The splotchy pixilation and solarization glitches are barely equal in overall quality to standard DVD, and cannot approach the unsurpassed clarity of a pure 1080p Blu-ray image. It wasn’t immediately apparent to me, but the majority of movies available for streaming are not even offered in Dolby Digital or DTS sound, and this cannot even begin to compete with the richness of an uncompressed Blu-ray audio track.

Further, deaf viewers and the hard of hearing are virtually shut out online, as studios are under no obligation to caption streamed content.

The fact that I collect movies on disc has a lot to do with my tendency to revisit favorite films, and the offering of special features—filmmaker commentaries, deleted scenes, previews, production diaries, retrospective and making-of documentaries—is often the weighing factor when deciding on the purchase of a double-dip upgrade reissue.

Today I can show a buddy the knife scene in Chinatown on my smart phone at the touch of a finger, but nobody can promise me it’ll still be available for streaming tomorrow. And if it isn’t, I won’t be too keen on paying a fee to view it on demand for a limited time every time the inkling strikes me to visit a sequence from the film.

Barring fire or theft, I’m glad that I can glance over to my bookshelf and retrieve my pristine disc-based copy of Chinatown anytime I choose, and will have to endure only the force-fed previews and copyright disclaimer screens before having full command of the film and an array of exclusive special features at my fingertips, even when the WiFi is on the fritz.

Again.

Though privacy concerns are palpable, I couldn’t care less if some notation in my viewing history suggests that I’m obsessed with Superman because I’ve streamed it more times than any other title on demand. What does give me pause, however, is the concern that my hypothetical streaming of a controversial film (i.e.:  Fight Club; Fair Game; American History X; Birth of a Nation) or an explosive documentary (The World According to Monsanto; Fahrenheit 9/11; The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Reni Riefenstahl, e.g.) will flag me as some sort of racist anarchist or conspiracy theorist rather than a mere film buff intent to absorb as much cinema as possible.

And that’s assuming such incendiary fare is ever programmed into the rotation. How sad to think that a controversial film could easily be withdrawn from circulation, or subject to alteration or deletion without notice, and for any reason. I trust I’m not the only one who gets a creepy 1984 vibe when I think of every digitized bit of art, literature, film, music and history being stored away on a giant cloud-based central server in—what?—the Ministry of Information?

Streaming has proven to be a fun and economical way to channel surf dozens of TV shows I’d never bothered to seek out during their initial broadcasts. It’s also a surprisingly efficient way to sample the scores of movies I recognize but have never gotten around to viewing, and that might otherwise be the immediately regrettable target of an impulse-buy from the DVD bargain bin.

Yet it’s been frustrating to learn that the comparatively meager selection of instant streaming titles cannot compete with the massive catalogue of movies and TV shows available for purchase on DVD.

Until I can order up ANY movie EVER MADE at the touch of a keystroke, the streaming model will remain unfeasible.

Under ideal conditions, smooth streaming is great for, say, settling a bar bet or referencing a specific quote at a moment’s notice, but most movie lovers I know prefer to kick back in front of a big-screen TV in the middle of a sphere of surround speakers when screening a movie, and the preferred method of delivery tends to be the high-definition format currently offering the most superior and faithful audiovisual presentation possible.

Once it was laserdisc.

Today it’s Blu-ray.

It may be something else tomorrow, but it will assuredly NOT be high-definition digital streaming anytime in the near future, no matter what some digital streaming shill claims.

To echo a sentiment among disc lovers that paraphrases a quote made infamous by Charlton Heston and the NRA: "I'll give you my DVD when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!"

GARY ROSS Will Not Be Directing HUNGER GAMES Follow-up CATCHING FIRE

Director Gary Ross will not be returning for the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy Chasing Fire.

Ross made a statement the other day saying that he simply didn't have time to write and prepare a movie that needs a lot of dedication. Ross went on to mention that Lionsgate gave him freedom with the first film and that making The Hunger Games was "the happiest experience" in his professional life.

Recently there have reports that negotiations between the director and the studio have had problems, but Ross refutes this by saying the studio has "been very understanding". So it seems like the relationship between the two is still solid and he could be doing other projects in the future. No word on anything yet though.

Beyond the studio, Ross also gave thanks to author Suzanne Collins, actor Jennifer Lawrence, and producer Nina Jacobson. Finally he ended by saying that he is not doing the second film because of the fans that he has developed a trust with and he doesn't want to disappoint them with a movie he realistically couldn't do with his busy schedule.

Lionsgate made a statement as well, it's the usual letter from the company saying that Ross is great, they are very sad, but they hope to work with him in the future. As I mentioned earlier, they did end saying "this will not be the end of our relationship...we look forward to working with him in the future.

AMC Is Turning ROBERT KIRKMAN's THIEF OF THIEVES Into A Show

0
0

Robert Kirkman will have one more project to work on now that AMC has picked up his comic book Thief of Thieves.

In a press release from AMC, the cable network announced that it would be turning Thief of Thieves into a new series. Kirkman mostly known for his Walking Dead work will work with Chic Eglee to create the new show based on his comic book series with the same name. The two will also be executive producers along with David Alpert, an EP on The Walking Dead.

Thief of Thieves is a crime story published by Skybound, an imprint at Image Comics. The popular comic started in February and sold out on its release date. Kirkman says that similar to how The Walking Dead was a unique way to bring horror to television, this new show will show "the humanity of all the characters, including the criminals."

AMC has clearly realized the stories in comics are interesting and new. Many of them have nothing similar on television. Kirkman is excited about the project mainly because of how the network has put a lot of dedication into making Walking Dead a proper adaptation of his comics.

The story is centered on the character of Conrad Paulson, a man addicted to stealing simply for the thrill of it. Like any addict, he needs more and more to get a thrill. Eventually he is stealing from other thieves, hence the title.

Kirkman created the comic, but has other writers working on the story arcs. working similarly to how The Walking Dead was done, the story will be done with a group of writers working hard to make a very interesting show. The first arc has Nick Spencer and Shawn Martinbrough attached to write along with Kirkman.

MEL GIBSON'S Maccabee Movie Goes On Hold

0
0

Warner Bros has decided that the screenplay for Mel Gibson's Judah Maccabee isn't quite what they were looking for and so the project is going to the shelf.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, WB has rejected the screenplay from Joe Eszterhas which would have seen Mel Gibson in either a directing or starring role. Eszterhas, known for writing Basic Instinct and Showgirls pitched the idea in September and caught a lot of attention because of Gibsons's past and his slurs and comments about the Jewish community.

Maccabee led a revolt of the Jewish people against the Greek-Macedonian war in the second century B.C. The project took criticism early on when Gibson was first announced as being attached to the project.

The project isn't dead yet and could easily come back if there is a rewrite of the script. Sources say that the project isn't even officially shelved yet and is just under review. an official decision will likely come soon.

There was also a memo that showed up today on the internet that seems to be from Eszterhas to Gibson. It's basically a rant about how Gibson "hates the Jews." As Deadline says, the timing of the letter is odd and it's simply too easy for anyone with a computer to type something, send it to an outlet and claim it's exclusive. If you want to read the angry letter go to the wrap to read the whole thing .

AIN'T NO TIME FOR BRONCHITIS: A Wonderful News Report from Oklahoma City News Channel 4

This is one of those great Southern soliloquies that I deeply miss being so far from my adopted hometown of Savannah, Georgia (Ok, so technically this is from Oklahoma, but it's still the South...somewhat).

Black or White, it didn't matter, when the news truck came to take a statement concerning any level of disaster, the descriptive accounts would fly and that is what made living in the Deep South such a wonderful thing.

God, I miss Cole' Pops.

P.S. You gotta love the guy walking back-and-forth behind Miss Sweet Brown.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S4E19: Blank

0

It’s Clark’s turn to lose his memory again, so it’s up to Chloe—the only person to learn his secret and not immediately be nearly killed because of it—to keep him out of trouble.

This has Three’s Company type misunderstandings written all over it.

The Random:
1. Lana once again finds herself in a dangerous relationship and can’t seem to completely extricate herself from the situation. Great judge of character, she is.

2. It’s good to know Clark’s heat vision is still being used as a metaphor for ejaculation, but bad to know that even mindwiped Clark is still smitten with Lana.

3. It’s nice to see we have a person infected by Kryptonite that’s not just bent on destruction and crime for the hell of it and is actually a decent person..

Clark, THIS is who you should have been with all along…

The Awesome:
1. Seeing Clark slowly learn about his powers all over again winds up being a lot of fun, and Chloe’s tutoring is definitely a welcome role reversal for her.

2. You have to appreciate Lex’s immediate decision to take advantage of Clark’s missing memory and try and get him to reveal the secrets of the caves. That’s just good friendship.

3. Kevin gets a lot of points for helping Clark keep his secrets after he accidentally lets his abilities be seen by Lois and Sheriff Adams.

“So, we’re working in the caves together? AND we’re lovers?
Interesting. Tell me more…”

The WTF?!:
1. You know what’s a great, low key vehicle for a getaway car? A bright yellow pick up truck. You’ll blend right on in.

2. Kevin’s dad opens up pretty fast to a group of strange high school kids he’s never seen before, telling about Kevin’s involuntary murder of his brother, secret experiments at his job, etc. But at least he didn’t let it spill that he was actually the one responsible for Dylan’s death. So there’s that.

3. It’s a good thing Chloe still has time to hack computers and trespass once again. How she hasn’t been killed or at least arrested is beyond me.

“I got the most inconspicuous car on the lot, don’t worry about it.”

SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH Is Now A Superhero

0
0

Sabrina may have the powers of a witch, but now she may also be a superhero.

Deadline reports that the teenage witch will get a slightly different story whe going to Sony Pictures. The new live-action film will show a different origin story that will still show how she learned to deal with her "remarkable powers."

The character first showed up in Archie Comics in the 60s and has since become the star of her own comic, animated TV show, movie, and live-action TV show. The new film would have her as a sort of superhero.

Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari will be writing the script. Mark Waters may be directing if it fits into his schedule. He gave the presentation that was given to Sony.

The studio is hoping that with the established brand, they can find a new actress for the little witch girl and possibly even turn it into a new teen franchise. The tone will be a little edgier than earlier projects, but will keep classic elements like her talking cat Salem who is actually a prince that was cursed.

HOLY MARIO KART! We Got Ourselves A Functional NES Coffee Table Controller!

You'll have to excuse me if I ramble on about this delicious coffee table as if I were a Hoarder defending their dirty diaper room, but I am almost literally messing myself over this design.

I mean, not only is it aesthetically pleasing to an Old Skool gamer like myself, it is also a functioning controller for your old NES console. Simply remove the glass top to access the buttons, retract the power cord from underneath the table and plug it in and HOLY CRAP I CAN PLAY ZELDA ON A HUGE CONTROLLER TABLE!

See, it's totally awesome:

At $3500 it's no cheapy Ikea thing but think of it as a potential family heirloom to pass down from one dork to another.

I weep at just the thought of my great-granddaughter eating a bowl of Ramen noodles and leaving a ring from her bottle of Mountain Dew on the it...(sniff).

I think I'm gonna start a Kickstarter campaign so people can give me money to fund my "Cool Ass Home" project.
