Captain America Gets Tribute Statue in Brooklyn Hometown; Unveiled at SDCC

Captain America Statue - Park Simulation imageSince his creation in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Captain America has gone through numerous evolutions, but  always remains as one of the world’s most influential and inspiring Super Heroes. Kicking off a new phase of the year-long celebration of 75 years of Captain America, Marvel Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media have unveiled a slate of heroic activations taking place at San Diego Comic-Con and beyond to honor the First Avenger, along with a wide range of celebratory merchandise.

Headlining the Captain America 75th anniversary celebration, Marvel has collaborated with high-end collectibles maker Comicave Studios to create a one-of-a-kind Captain America statue that will be displayed at the Marvel booth #2329 at Comic-Con International on July 20. Comicave Studios worked closely with Marvel artists in New York and a Brooklyn-based sculptor to design the bronze tribute, standing at over 13 feet and weighing 1 ton. The statue will continue to stand tall on the show floor throughout San Diego Comic-Con for photo ops with fans, and 1/12-scale bronze replicas of the statue will be available for purchase.

Captain America Statue

Plus, a custom comic book was created by Marvel Publishing writers and artists to integrate the statue into new storytelling.  This one-of-a-kind comic will be available in limited quantities at San Diego Comic-Con and future Captain America events.

Comicave Custom Comic Cover

Following SDCC, the commemorative statue will journey via truck across the country to Brooklyn, NY – the hometown of Steve Rogers – for a limited engagement in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Fans can follow the truck along its cross-country route through photos on social media sites like Marvel and StyledByMarvel Instagram. The statue will be on display in the Children’s Corner of Prospect Park for a two-week temporary installation, kicking off with a dedication ceremony and community event on August 10th from 1-3pm. In the evening, a special viewing of the recent blockbuster film, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, will take place in Prospect Park as part of the culmination of the Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams’ “A Summer Movie Under the Stars” program, which will be airing four Captain America-focused movies every Wednesday from July 20th to August 10th.

“To the rest of America and the world, he’s Captain America; to us, he’ll always be Steve Rogers, ‘just a kid from Brooklyn,’” said Borough President Adams. “Brooklyn is proud to be the base of celebrations for Cap’s 75th anniversary, which will be capped by a larger-than-life statue traveling around our borough — befitting of this larger-than-life character. Prospect Park is the place to be this summer to enjoy the Captain America!”

After the half-month stop in Prospect Park, the Captain America statue will move to the plaza outside Barclays Center on Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues for September, during which several Marvel fan activations take place. From late October through the remainder of the year, the statue will adorn the soon-to-be-opened Bed Bath & Beyond in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Fans of all ages will enjoy a specially re-designed statue base, for heightened interactivity and photo opportunities with Captain America, as well as see and shop for a variety of unique Marvel items, including limited quantities of scaled replicas of the bronze statue itself.

“Since 1941 Captain America has remained one of the most influential Super Heroes in comic book history,” said Paul Gitter, senior vice president, licensing, Marvel at Disney Consumer Products. “He has evolved as a character throughout the years, but remains constant as a moral compass within the Marvel Universe and leader of the Avengers. The tribute statue and other activations are the perfect way to honor 75 years of this iconic Super Hero and to celebrate the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.”

Also joining the 75th celebration at San Diego Comic-Con are Marvel’s leading merchandise partners including Hasbro, Funko, and Jakks Pacific who will be commemorating “Cap” through new collectibles. As previously announced, Comicave Studios will also be offering different scales of replicas of the bronze statue itself at San Diego Comic-Con.  Additional licensees including Mad Engine, Mighty Fine, Freeze, C-Life, Her Universe, What’s Your Passion, Nick Graham, Café Press, Jay Franco, Kiddesigns, HJC Helmets and more will all feature new Captain America merchandise at major retailers this Fall.  These collections will highlight Captain America’s iconic shield and cover categories including apparel and accessories for kids, women and men, home goods, electronics, and toys. There will even be new Brooklyn-themed artwork available for a range of apparel and accessories.

SDCC: IDW and DC Announce Two New Crossovers

IDW Publishing and DC Entertainment will continue their successful editorial mash-ups and bring fans two new comic book crossovers based on some of their most popular properties, including a sequel to the smash-hit co-publishing venture Star Trek/Green Lantern and an all new crossover with animation-inspired versions of Batman and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

unnamed(24)

“We’re very happy to extend our ongoing relationship with DC with these iconic characters in new storylines,” says Greg Goldstein, President and COO of IDW Publishing.  “Fans who enjoyed the previous series will enjoy the fun, new adventures we have in store for these upcoming titles.”

Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will once again cross paths with the Green Lantern Corps in a sequel to last year’s Star Trek/Green Lantern series.

The creative team of Mike Johnson and Angel Hernandez will reteam for another epic space opera, this one picking up the new status quo where it left off and introducing additional cosmic heroes and villains familiar to fans of both series. This series is slated for a winter 2016 launch.

Following the recent success of Batman/TMNT, IDW, DC, and Nickelodeon are also happy to announce another pairing between the Caped Crusader and the Ninja Turtles: Batman/TMNT Adventures, coming this November.

Based on the animated versions of both series, this storyline for fans of all ages will bring the Dark Knight of the beloved Batman: The Animated Series in contact with Nickelodeon’s animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

unnamed(23)The dynamic duo of writer Matthew K. Manning (Beware the Batman) and artist Jon Sommariva (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Amazing Adventures) will team on the series.

“The previous Star Trek/Green Lantern and Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossovers were a huge hit with fans of each of the characters,” said Hank Kanalz, DC SVP of Editorial Strategy and Administration. “Bringing these characters back again, and expanding Batman and the Turtles to the realm where they’re most recognized by comic fans and fans of the TV series will make for a great story that any fan can’t wait to read.”

“It’s always a blast to pair up beloved characters in comic series, and our recent pairings with DC have been especially satisfying on a creative level and in regards to fan satisfaction, too,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer. “Being able to bring Ciro Nieli’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the amazing animated Gotham envisioned by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski is a major bonus.”

FOG! Chats With ‘My Golden Days’ Director Arnaud Desplechin

desplechin

The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Stephen Rey recently called Arnaud Desplechin, “the greatest contemporary French filmmaker no one has ever heard of.”  With the critically acclaimed My Golden Days reaching DVD and Digital HD, the writer/director took some time to discuss his career and latest work.

*****

FOG!: You created the character of Paul Dedalus almost twenty years ago for your film My Sex Life…Or How I Got Into An Argument with Mathieu Amalric portraying the role.  The character and his family appeared in 2008’s A Christmas Tale, this time played by Emile Berling.  With My Golden Days, Dedalus returns, once again with Amalric in the role, but sharing the part with Quentin Dolmaire.  Are all of these Paul Dedalus’ the same character and do you consider it to be your cinematic alter ego?

Arnaud Desplechin: I don’t think that the character in A Christmas Tale is really the same Paul Dedalus. This melancholic character played by Emile Berling is going through this nervous breakdown, which is a thing that belongs to Paul Dedalus, but I thought it was – let’s say a nice family joke – a sort of a way of sharing it with the spectators who saw my previous work.

But definitely, I think that My Golden Days is the prequel of My Sex Life. So, yes, it is the same character. Even if there are some changes here and there, I think he has the same shyness and the same problem with women, and he’s embarrassed by girls, he’s clumsy and has this difficulty with his mother, which is a thing I call “Paul Dedalus” which means that he’s not able to love his mother.”

My Golden Days is a coming of age film. In the press you mentioned that you were greatly influenced by American coming of age films and cited The Outsiders, Dazed and Confused, Almost Famous, Super Bad and Moonrise Kingdom.  French cinema has a long history of coming of age cinema.  What drew you to these specific American films?

Why? Because I am French, which means that I am in love with American cinema. I know that this is a paradox, but it’s my definition of France. In France we have these intellectuals who love the popular American cinema. When do I feel French? When I am speaking about American movies, like when François Truffaut or Jean Luc Godard used to speak about American movies.

What was your approach writing the film?  How do you prevent the narrative from becoming self-indulgent nostalgia?

I think that the film writing was brutal. It’s about the thing, which is far from nostalgia – the fact that Esther and Paul are not at all a perfect match. Their relationship is a disaster, but they love each other. And they love each other even if it’s the contrary of a perfect match. Everything opposes these two characters, you know, the girl and the boy. And though they love each other and they invent themselves through the other one, I thought that this motive was far from nostalgia and much more urgent.

I guess that the film was not painted as a period piece, because I was working with these actors who were so young – Louis was 17 years old and Quentin was 19 years old. They were so young that they were speaking for their own generation and they were depicting their own worries, not my worries. I guess it gave a flavor which is absolutely contemporary to the audience.”

What films or directors had the strongest influence on you and what drives your passion for cinema?

The list is so long and I could mention so many American directors, because I think America has a very vivid generation of filmmakers today. But, I would love to mention two directors who are not American: Jia Zhangke, who to me is one of the best directors alive on earth, and newcomer László Nemes, the director of Son of Saul. They both have films that really changed my life. If I’m thinking about A Touch of Sin and Son of Saul, I know they are two films that really changed my life.

My passion for film is the fact that I think real life is an overrated value. When I look at life, I always think it’s dull and boring, then suddenly reality is shot and screened and then it starts to mean things. Life fills a screen and has significance. You don’t always know exactly what it means, but you know that everything means something – it is full of knowledge and mystery. And I am always stupefied by the way you can catch reality with a camera and you screen it and suddenly reality starts to glow. I am in love with that glow.

Do you have plans to revisit Paul Dedalus again?

Never! Never (while laughing)! You know it’s a question that Mathieu Amalric asked me when he saw the first editing of My Golden Days and he said, “Do you think that we will revisit Paul Dedalus again?” And my answer was “Never, I am done with it. I did these two long films about him and we have said everything we have to say about him.”

And Mathieu said, “Yes, but think about one thing: if you are lucky and if you grow very old, around 75 or 80 years old, perhaps with Emmanuelle Devos and myself, you can make a very bitter, cruel film about this old couple still arguing again and again and again. It could be the perfect final film.”

But I should be more than 75 years old to do such a film, so before my 75th birthday I will say “never” and after… Well, I can’t promise anything.”

Jack Kirby’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Artist’s Edition Coming from IDW

0
0

unnamed(25)January 2017 will see the release of Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition, collecting multiple complete stories, all captured directly from Jack Kirby’s original art. This will be the second Artist’s Edition of Kirby’s immensely popular and influential Marvel work, following the recent release of the highly anticipated Jack Kirby’s The Mighty Thor Artist’s Edition.

“These issues of Fantastic Four represent Jack Kirby operating at the top of his game, which is about as high a compliment as I can pay a comic book,” said noted comics historian and Kirby biographer Mark Evanier. “As a reader, I felt like the fifth member of the Fantastic Four—and that was in the small format with the bad printing. When I get the IDW book, I will probably want to move into it and live there.”

Kirby’s work on the Fantastic Four, with his long-time collaborator Stan Lee, is considered to be some of the finest comics ever done. Adding to the prestige, legendary inker Joe Sinnott embellished all the pages in this book. This breathtaking volume will include Issues #82 and #83 (guest-starring the Inhumans), and the 48-page epic from Fantastic Four Annual #6, featuring the birth of Franklin Richards, plus more!

“Kirby’s inventive story-telling set the bar that Marvel has honored for decades,” says David Gabriel, SVP Sales & Marketing, Marvel Comics. “We couldn’t be prouder to see this fantastic work made available in this new prestige over-sized format that pays tribute to Jack ‘The King’ Kirby’s exemplary talent and skill.”

“What better way is there to kick off Jack Kirby’s centennial birthday year than by releasing our first Kirby Fantastic Four Artist’s Edition?” said editor (and life-long Kirby fan) Scott Dunbier. “And did you catch how I said first?”

IDW Pioneered the Artist’s Edition format in 2010 and has won five consecutive Eisner Awards to date.

Nickelodeon Introduces Same-Sex Cartoon Couple

Screen-Shot-2016-07-17-at-9.51.50-PM-1468807361Nickelodeon’s Loud House is giving folks something to shout about as the animated laffer debuted the kiddie network’s first openly gay couple.

In the show, Clyde McBride, the best buddy to central character Lincoln Loud, introduces his parents to the Loud family/audience, an interracial gay couple played by Wayne Brady and Michael McDonald.

In the show, the two are greeted by Lincoln with the simple: “Hi Mr. McBride. Hi Mr. McBride.” No biggie. Just another day of hanging with a best buddy whose family happens to have plural pops.

Bad news for bigoted people who use television as their personal babysitter or comment frequently on IMDb. Good news for the rest of the world.

kids

Reaction to the cartoon has been positive thus far as animation fans and supporters of basic human rights celebrate the milestone on social media.

Nickelodeon’s Loud House is the story of an 11-year-old boy lost among his gaggle of ten sisters. The show is currently in its first season.

One Million Moms has yet to comment. But they will. Because they are awful.

‘Midnight Run [Collector’s Edition]’ On Blu-ray August 23!

image002(2)As one of the first releases in their anticipated new line of films called Shout Select, Shout! Factory will release Midnight Run on Blu-ray on August 23, 2016.

The release includes a full slate of bonus features – several interviews including a NEW interview with Robert De Niro, and a vintage making-of featurette.

Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) is a tough ex-cop turned bounty hunter. Jonathan “The Duke” Mardukas (Charles Grodin) is a sensitive accountant who embezzled $15 million from the mob, gave it to charity and then jumped bail. Jack’s in for a cool $100,000 if he can deliver The Duke from New York to L.A. on time… and alive.

Sounds like just another Midnight Run (a piece of cake in bounty hunter slang), but it turns into a cross-country chase. The FBI wants The Duke to testify. The Mob wants him for revenge and Walsh wants him to just shut up.

If someone else doesn’t do the job, the two unlikely partners may end up killing each other in this hilarious, action-filled ride from producer-director Martin Brest (Beverly Hills Cop).

Shout Select endeavors to shine a light on films that deserve a spot on your shelf. Debuting this August, Shout Select boasts an exciting slate of fan-favorite releases making their Blu-ray debuts.  Titles include the pulp sci-fi rom-com classic The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension, the time traveling Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Collection, John Carpenter’s Emmy Award -nominated biopic Elvis, and the rowdy action-thriller Road House. Each title will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, and when possible will be released as a Collector’s Edition, with new bonus content, archival materials, collectible cover artwork, and more.

Midnight Run Special Features:

  • NEW Interview with Robert De Niro
  • We’ve Got the Duke – An Interview With Actor Charles Grodin
  • Moscone Bail Bonds – An Interview With Actor Joe Pantoliano
  • Hey Marvin! – An Interview With Actor John Ashton
  • I’m Mosely! – An Interview With Actor Yaphet Kotto

Its-Alive-Logo-600x257Like a bolt of lighting, a new publishing deal has struck and IDW Publishing is excited to present the most electrifying new imprint of the year, It’s Alive!

IDW’s newest publishing partner, Drew Ford, brings with him first-rate taste and years of experience putting together dozens of graphic novel and comic book reprint collections for Dover Publications.

unnamed(26)He left his post there to launch his own imprint It’s Alive! with plans to continue his mission of saving the history of comics, one collection at a time.

That goal has led Ford to acquire reprint rights to several exciting graphic novel and comic book projects, and has now signed with IDW to solicit and distribute the titles produced by his new imprint, making those collections much more accessible to a larger audience.

Ford has utilized Kickstarter in order to fully fund the restoration that each of these new collections deserves, with the campaign for Red Range by Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman being a recent success having raised nearly $20,000.

This will be the first title published under the new imprint followed by Trina Robbins’ Dope, which launches its Kickstarter campaign this week.

“We’ve long been impressed by the books Drew has produced in the past,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer. “He’s beautifully packaged very worthwhile but long-out-of-print material into amazing artifacts. We’re all very excited to partner with Drew to help him continue to bring back into print such essential works that could otherwise be lost to history.”

unnamed(27)“This partnership with IDW ensures that the books I produce through my It’s Alive! imprint will reach the widest audience possible,” said Drew Ford. “Beyond that, IDW continually produces work at the forefront of comics publishing, and I am grateful and excited to be working with them.”

It’s Alive! joins other notable imprint partners that have come to define IDW’s diverse award-winning content including Top Shelf Publications, Yoe! Books, and the Library of American Comics. It’s Alive! Plans to publish 5-6 titles in 2017 with each title raising its money for publication via Kickstarter.

CoFhh6FVMAAtL_fDeveloped for television by Fargo creator Noah Hawley, Legion is based on the character created by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz.

Legion follows David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and visions might be real.

In this incarnation, it’s unlikely that Haller is the son of Charles Xavier, founder of the X-Men, but he is most definitely a mutant.  The cast also includes Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Katie Aselton, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, with Bill Irwin and Aubrey Plaza.  Legion debuts in early 2017 and is produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television.
