MEN & CHICKEN (review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz
Produced by Joel Brandeis, Christoph Daniel,
Christoph Fisser, Henning Molfenter,
Marc Schmidheiny, Dario Suter, Charlie Woebcken
Written and Directed by Anders Thomas Jensen
Starring David Dencik, Mads Mikkelsen,
Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Søren Malling, Nicolas Bro

It’s hard to say exactly what kind of movie Men and Chicken is other than the title of it is pretty descriptive, you know, if you like your movies with a bit of bird bestiality in it.

Should that not immediately turn you off, this Three Stooges-meets-Freaks Danish film about two brothers (David Dencik and Mads Mikkelsen) searching out the truth about their parentage might be up your alley.

that is if you don’t mind a movie about a family plagued by harelips, chronic masturbators and weirdly malformed chickens who get more than they bargained for.

Oh, and there’s a lot of philosophy discussions in it as well in case you’re thinking that there can’t be anything intellectual about a movie featuring a bunch of chicken f*ckers in it.

BITE (review)

Review by Stefan Blitz
Produced by Chad Archibald, Cody Calahan, Christopher Giroux
Directed by Chad Archibal
Written by Jayme Laforest
Starring Elma Begovic, Annette Wozniak,
Jordan Gray, Lawrene Denkers, Denise Yuen

For some reason the producers of Bite are eager to promote that people got sick and others fainted during it's premiere; I was more concerned that I'd die after getting assaulted with cinematic stupidity.

Bite is the creature version of torture porn horror; the film hates it's characters (particularly women) and takes far too much joy in destroying the lives of it's "characters".

The first twenty minutes start with a "found footage" approach that shifts only so we can have an unreliable narrator.

With cold feet before her upcoming nuptials  Casey (Elma Begovic, the film's real find despite having to spend half the film acting very stupid), goes on a tropical vacation with two of her girlfriends.

The Ladies Who Punch: A Look At The Etheria Film Fest

Written by Erin Maxwell

Ever since 2014, the Etheria Film Festival has been giving women the opportunity to have a voice in the realm of genre films. Founded by Stacy Pippi Hammon, Heidi Honeycutt and Kayley Viteo, the fest spotlights female filmmakers who happen to share a love for sci-fi, horror and the just plain strange.

This year, the official lineup for the fest will feature nine shorts and a spotlight Anne Biller’s The Love Witch, a modern-day tribute to the technicolor grindhouse exploitation pics of the ‘60s, but with a feminist twist.

“Every year, the submissions get better and better,” says Honeycutt. “In 2016, the horror submissions blew my mind. They’re shockingly good. I think our audience is going to freak out. I hope our audience freaks out.”

Each year, the fest hands out the Etheria Film Night Inspiration Award to a trailblazing female who has turned the industry on its ear. Past recipients have included Lexi Alexander, Jane Espenson, Jennifer Lynch and Mary Lambert.

This year, the fest will laud helmer Jackie Kong, best known for her work on Night Patrol and Blood Diner.

“When we talk about inspiration, it’s not just the films, but the attitudes that we look up to. Kong’s unflinching determination to tell the stories that she wants to tell is so affirming to so many women,” Hammon commented.. “Combined with [Kong] having directed some of the most iconic genre films of the 1980s, this attitude makes her stand out as someone we would love to honor. She’s punk rock..”

Here is a quick peek at the slate of scare-heavy shorts at this year’s fest:

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew (review)

Review by Lily Fierro
The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye
Written and Illustrated by Sonny Liew
Published by Pantheon
ISBN: 978-1101870693 | Price $30.00
Release date: March 1, 2016

Before you read this review, let’s make sure of one thing: Charlie Chan, Singapore’s greatest comics artist, is not real.

He is Sonny Liew’s fictional vehicle into the history of Singapore’s cultural and political landscape.

Those statements are difficult to believe when you open up The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye and see the glory of its meticulous, anthology-like curation. On the surface, the book deviously seems like a dry coffee table adornment with concept sketches, newspaper clippings, scans of “unpublished” work, and “reproductions” of archived comics ripe and ready for your admiration of this unknown comics master, but not too far past its facade, The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye dives into a complex analysis into the state of Singapore through the life and perspective of the comics creator Charlie Chan.

While the content of Chan’s work and the commentary on his pieces concretely discuss Singapore’s movement toward independence from Britain and the nation’s post-colonial history, the continued failure of Chan as a creator gives a deeper insight into the psyche of conflicts embedded in Singapore.

GRAPHIC BREAKDOWN!: 4001 AD, Spacetime Battle Lunchtime #1, Satellite Falling #1, The Complete Peanuts: 1999-2000, Justice League #49 & More!

Hello! My name is Lenny Schwartz and I am a playwright from RI and New York.

And I'm a life long comic book fan. I am so happy to write about comic books.

So without further adieu, here goes!

4001 AD #1
Written by Matt Kindt and Illustrated by Clayton Crain and David Mack
Published by Valiant Comics

Valiant Comics has begun their new comic book event with this title, fresh from the pages of Rai. They decided to pull back and show up the full scope of the Valiant Universe. So how is this?

It's great. Kindt has quite a brain on him. Here he shows how deep and far he can go with his writing. This shows Rai trying to start a rebellion and in the search for heroes in the future to fight his enemy, The Father.

This is a hell of a story. To keep it interesting Kindt has to balance a lot...and he succeeds for most of it. Depending on how it plays out, the rest can be thrilling. The only downside is a lot is information is thrown at the reader...exciting yes, but still a lot.

Crain's a genius on art. A sheer genius. He's come a long way and it shows. The art is out of this world. Combine that with the art of David Mack for a few pages, and it's well worth the price of admission.

Valiant is one of the best publishers out there. This is another stong showing from them. Get hooked with these books. They are comic books at their best.

RATING: B+

PODCASTING ABOUT

Written by John Teehan

My wife and I recently drove to Williamsburg, Virginia and back for RavenCon. It was a fun con, but it was a long, long, looooong drive. The GPS said it would take nine hours. Reality made it more like thirteen as we battled traffic through NYC, DC, and the BMB.

Fortunately, we live in the future now.

The car we had rented featured a perfectly good Bluetooth connection for our smartphones which meant we were not beholden to the sad state of affairs that make up today's radio stations that aren't NPR.

With access to our podcast libraries, our lives were saved!

Hours and hours and hours of entertainment are out there for our listening and entertainment pleasure.

Below, I've compiled a list of ten of the better ones for you to try out on your own. Try them out on a long drive. Try them out while pulling a 24-hour work session. Play them while making a fancy dinner. Doing some night digging? Make it fun! If you're not already a fan of podcasts, you'll find a whole new world to enjoy if'n you give this list a try.

I promise.

Review: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Is That Bad

Review by Stefan Blitz
Produced by Simon Kinberg, Bryan Singer,
Hutch Parker, Lauren Shuler Donner
Screenplay by Simon Kinberg
Story by Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg,
Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris
Based on X-Men by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby
Directed by Bryan Singer
Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender,
Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult,
Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner,
Olivia Munn, Lucas Till, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee

Fox screening their latest installment of their mutant franchise X-Men: Apocalypse three weeks before it's release date seemed like a hopeful vote of confidence from the studio that they have a good film on their hands.

They don't.

X-Men: Apocalypse is terrible.  It's a two and a half hour set-up to a story that never comes together.

I think Fox's plan is to get all of the negative press out of the way before they advertise the hell out of this, making it look fantastic and having audiences forget about the bad reviews before they head out opening night.

The sad truth is, as my father used to say, "you can't polish shit".

The team who brought you Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II and You're so cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night have launched their Kickstarter Campaign for the fully independent retrospective into the making of RoboCop and its cultural impact over the last 30 years, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop.

Directed by Paul Verhoeven, produced by Jon Davison and written by Ed Neumeier & Michael Miner, RoboCop was first released in 1987, and has since become one of the most iconic and successful movies of the 1980s; a movie that was well ahead of its time and has left a lasting impression on fans across the globe. RoboCop is a film that many fans watched as children when they were too young to understand the social commentary of this R-Rated movie, yet they were instantly hooked on the future of law enforcement.

The documentary is made as a labour of love by a team of RoboCop fans, Director Christopher Griffiths states "To say that RoboCop is a big part of my life is an understatement. Just ask anybody who knows me. It is the film that started it all for me at an age when I probably shouldn't have been watching it, like many others, but I did, and I have grown up with it and found new things each time I watch it."

Supported by dozens of the original cast and crew RoboDoc is made by fans of the movie for fans of the movie. The crew have already received support from over 20 of the cast and crew as well as the RoboCop Archive, and there is no doubt that by the time of production many more key players will be attached to share their amazing stories about one of the most iconic movies ever-made.
