Win BOB HOPE: ENTERTAINING THE TROOPS on DVD!

The legendary Bob Hope, one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, was best known for his Christmas specials. Traveling with special guests, he visited US troops in dozens of locations around the world, performing on battleships and battlefields -- and sometimes even accompanied by the sound of fighter jets overhead. His missions were often dangerous, his schedule brutal, yet for thousands of servicemen and women far from home there was no one like Hope for the holidays.

On May 10, Time Life, creator and direct marketer of unique music and home entertainment products, will deliver BOB HOPE: ENTERTAINING THE TROOPS, a single DVD featuring three TV Christmas Specials: a rare, never-before-released 1951 special from The Korean War Era , along with shows from 1970 and 1971 - two of the most-watched shows in TV history! Featuring Hope's hilarious monologues and guest stars aplenty, these shows prove that laughter is truly the best medicine, regardless of the time zone or terrain. With this DVD release, Hope's fans will enjoy more than two and a half hours of Hope's house calls across three special troop shows:

The Bob Hope Christmas Special: Around the World with the USO
(Original Airdate: January 15, 1970) -- Hope and company embark on another Christmas tour to entertain the troops, starting with a send-off from the White House. The 16-day tour then continues through Germany, Italy, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Guam, and on-board the USS Ranger and the USS Sanctuary. Highlights include Neil Armstrong, recently back from his historic moon walk, answering questions from the service members, and Connie Stevens singing the "Wedding Bell Blues" to four service members named Bill.

The Bob Hope Christmas Special: Around the Globe with the USO
(Original Airdate: January 14, 1971) -- Hope visits U.S. military bases to entertain the troops and bring them Christmas cheer, starting with rehearsals at West Point and with stops in England, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Alaska, and to the USS John F. Kennedy in the Mediterranean, and the USS Sanctuary in the South China Sea. Highlights include Hope and Lola Falana doing a song and dance, Hope trading zingers with Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench, plus a routine with Ursula Andress, Gloria Loring and Miss World Jennifer Hosten.

Chesterfield Sound Off Time
(Airdate: December 23, 1951) - This rare, never-before-released special was filmed during the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Boxer. Highlights include Hope and Connie Moore crooning "I Wanna Go Home (With You)", the Nicholas Brothers performing their acrobatic style of tap dancing, and Hope, in an extended comedy sketch, taking command of the ship and sailing it on a secret mission.

One thing genre fans are always hungry for is fresh, smart, entertaining material.  And believe it or not, that's sometimes more challenging to find, even if you know where to look.

Funding platforms have allowed hundreds, if not thousands, of projects to move into production, but that doesn't mean that they should be made.  Personal Space is not only one that should be made, but it deserves your support.

It's also a damned clever concept.

Two and Done: First Sequels that Killed the Series

Captain America: Civil War is on deck, poised to take the worldwide box office by storm. It’s the third Cap movie, following The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier—and, with its padded roster of myriad Marvel players, it is also technically the third Avengers flick.

As a trilogy capper, it reminds me of all the lesser (or less fortunate) Chapter Twos to hit movie screens that never earned a Part 3. In some cases, the death of a franchise is a blessing; in others, the failure of a specific Part 2 to generate a legitimate Part 3 remains a cinematic head scratcher.

Here are some of the more glaring examples, encompassing the good, the bad and the downright ugly.

Captain America Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo
Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr.,

Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd,
Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman,
Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Emily VanCamp,
Tom Holland, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, Daniel Brühl

Following up Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War is the latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Winter Soldier filmmakers, the Russo Brothers.

In just 8 short years, Marvel Studios has brought the comic book mythology to film, establishing several franchises and then bringing them together.  It's simple to forget how unheard of a concept that was previously; with 2012's The Avengers having Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson share the screen together.

The Brothers Russo have done it again; with Civil War replacing the action-packed Winter Soldier as the very best in the Marvel filmography. On top of the already large cast, Civil War introduces two major heroes to the Marvel pantheon including the introduction of comics' first African American hero Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and the "They FINALLY Got it RIGHT"! onscreen Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is as pure perfection as Ivory Soap claims (99.9%, last time I checked).

Captain America: Civil War is pure Ever-Lovin' Merry Marvel Marchin' Society joy. 'Nuff said!

When it comes to names of creators who boldly mastered the patriotic majesty of Captain America, Jim Steranko is a name that will always rise to the top!

A graphic artist viewed as the most pioneering comic book creator of our time, and one of the most influential artists in the history of the comics, Marvel is proud to announce the return of Jim Steranko as he brings his narrative innovations back to a series of variant covers devoted to Captain America through the years.

“Five decades ago, Steranko threw pop art, surrealism and graphic design into a blender, and forever changed the way we tell comic book stories,” says Marvel EiC, Axel Alonso. “He was way ahead of his time back then, and he's every bit as relevant now."

“Jim Steranko is one of the grand masters of comic book graphics, and Captain America remains his favorite character, so it’s a true pleasure to have him contribute a series of new never-before-seen images to help celebrate Cap’s 75th anniversary,” says Marvel Senior Vice President and Executive Editor, Tom Brevoort.

Continuing through 2016 and into 2017, Marvel will be presenting monthly Jim Steranko Variant covers assigned with some of the most popular Marvel Comics:

STAR WARS: The Amazon Echo Awakens

Somehow, amongst all that merchandising, marketing and promotion for Star Wars: The Force Awakens last Fourth Quarter, I missed the news of a related update to Amazon's Echo.

Perhaps I was distracted by this bottle of Coffee-mate with the likeness of Boba Fett...

Nevertheless, I was thrilled to get Amazon's Echo newsletter this past week reminding me that Alexa can answer all of my Star Wars related questions and then some.

Alexa has made a lot of my electric dreams come true, most of which are from the actual movie Electric Dreams.

So I decided to put her to the test and pick her brain for Star Wars facts and fancy in this exclusive video. The Force is strong with Alexa (but as far as I can tell, she can't understand the binary language of moisture vaporators).

Enjoy, and may the FOURTH be with you...

In Defense of Lena Dunham

The other week Lena Dunham announced when being honored at The Matrix Awards in New York, that she would move to Vancouver if Donald Trump was elected President, and Trump’s reaction is about what you’d predict. In a sign of just how reviled Dunham is, people who oppose Trump joked that this was one time that they were on his side.

Men deeply hate Dunham and Girls. And as I’ve argued before, Dunham’s chief affront to our popular culture is that her body type doesn’t match the women who usually appear naked on screen.

I’ve learned there are two types of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

There are those that favor original storytelling and filmmaking while squeezing in the contractual franchise obligations with reluctance—James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy being the primary example. Hell, even the first two Captain America films stand on their own two feet.

Captain America: Civil War is the second type of Marvel affair, drowning in everything it owes to the cinematic universe it is a part of.

Referencing past films, teasing future ones and never successful in being its own present entity, Civil War suffers from a serious case of too-itis. It’s too much. It’s too many. And yet, it’s all too little at the same time.

And it’s all too bad. Covering the falling out and eventual head-to-head between two of Marvel’s most interesting characters, Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Tony Stark (Iron Man), Civil War gets lost in its obvious attempts to pander and please the fanboy base that’s continuously throwing dollars at these films like a stripper draped in Comic-Con attire.

FOG! Chats With MAD TIGER: THE PEELANDER-Z Documentary Filmmakers Jonathan Yi & Michael Haertlein

$

I first saw the 'comic book action punk band' Peelander-Z (from the Planet Peelander) back in 2006. I've seen some colors come and go, different people dress up as bowling pins and cosplayers sliding into themselves at human bowling.

I've seen 200 people with varying degrees of musical skill join the band with instruments from a suitcase (and even the bands' gear) playing a cacophony of noise that can only be described as a beautiful mess. Broken English punk chants 'Mad Tiger', 'Medium Rare' and my favorite 'So Many Mike' are on cue cards for the audience to sing along to, while squid and other Kaiju monsters make their way through the crowd. For the introverted nerd or geek, there was finally a punk band that could being you out of your shell.

The band feeds on this kind of happiness as well.

Lead by Peelander Yellow and his partner Peelander Red, a Peelander-Z show is like being in a Japanese comic book with action lines and full page spreads. The show is, by Yellow's definition, "10% music and 90% theatre". (Though you will be hard pressed not to be singing these songs to yourself days after a Peelander invasion).

Filmmakers Jonathan Yi and Michael Haertlein explore the relationship between the colorful band members in Mad Tiger, debuting in New York on May 6th. What started as a music documentary became the story of a relationship between two friends who are as close as family can ever be, and how Peelander-Z can navigate change.

Co-Directors Jon and Michael take a spin on the Treadmill this week to share about the making of Mad Tiger and the future of Peelander Planet.

Full Moon Features’ iconic horror film franchise is
the most successful direct-to-video series of all time

Di Bonaventura Pictures (1408, TRANSFORMERS) and Caliber Media (DARK WAS THE NIGHT, SOME KIND OF HATE) partnered up to option the rights to develop a brand new take on Charles Band’s cult classic horror film franchise PUPPET MASTER. With the intention to produce multiple storylines within this new universe, the producers have set S. Craig Zahler (BONE TOMAHAWK) to write the first script entitled PUPPET MASTER: THE LITTLEST REICH and expand the mythology, and the director’s search is quietly underway.

The film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian for di Bonaventura Pictures alongside Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller for Caliber Media. Charles Band will executive produce. Sonnier and Band announced the project together this weekend on stage at the Texas Frightmare Weekend presented by Fangoria.

"We couldn’t be more excited to take the series in a new direction while embracing all the practical effects and terrifying insanity that fans of the PUPPET MASTER films love,” said Heller.

And while cards, flowers, brunch, candles, and perfumes are nice, here are some of our suggestions.
