Old School Games You Should Be Plugging Into

Written by John Teehan

My first computer was a TRS-80 sometime in 1983.

I became an instant computer nerd. Later than some, way earlier than most. And while I spent a lot of time teaching myself basic programming and (a couple of years later) going on-line, I also played a lot of games.

A lot of games.

Like most nerds, I was socially maladroit. Eventually, once I hit college in 1985, I made a lot of friends, did a decent amount of partying, and became somewhat socially acceptable. But through all of this, I was still into computer games. The late 80s was a great time for this. While computers were horrendously primitive compared to what we have today, acceptable graphics were coming on the scene, midi sound, and truly immersive play.

I still think about many of those games today. And I also give thanks that one of the characteristics of the modern age is that nothing ever really disappears forever anymore. There's always a way to find something online.

In this case, a few months ago, I started noodling around archive.org when I read how there was a large cache of 80s and 90s computer games sitting there--and that there was a built-in DOS emulator so I could play these games online with my "modern" computer and not regret shedding my collection of classic computers a dozen years ago.

I've gone through a list of some of my all-time favorite games from that era, and found working, playable versions at archive.org and would like to share them with you today.

I don't have the kind of time I used to for computer games, but I was more than happy to make some time for these.

You will, too.

Dolemite, an outrageously funny and action-packed classic released theatrically in 1975, stars acclaimed, African-American comedian and filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore– who also co-wrote the film and its soundtrack – and was directed by D’Urville Martin, who also stars. Making its worldwide Blu-ray debut, the film has been fully restored in 2k from a recently discovered, long-lost 35mm negative and is loaded with extras.

Dolemite (Moore), the baddest pimp in town, has just been released from prison, ready to take revenge on notorious gangster Willie Green (Martin), who set him up on a phony drug charge and stole his club, The Total Experience. With the help of his friend Queen Bee (Lady Reed) and their bank of Kung Fu fighting vixens, Dolemite takes on every “rat soup eatin’ mother#%$*er” in South Central.

As the premiere release in a special series of six fully restored “Blaxploitation” cult classics, Dolemite hustles onto a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, April 26 from Vinegar Syndrome (VS).

Double Feature Movie Show: OZ IS A WEIRD PLACE

$

We’ve all seen The Wizard Of Oz.

A lot of us have even read the books.

Most of us have even seen these two really weird, bizarre, messed up movies that are just kind of unsettling.

To be honest, I hadn’t.

So, I decided to check them out.

I might not sleep again.

THE WIZ (1978)
Directed by Sidney Lumet
Written by Joel Schumacher
Based on a book by L Frank Baum and a play by William F Brown

Once upon a time, Motown had a semi-successful film production company. Their first feature in 1972, Lady Sings The Blues, was huge. Oscar noms, big box office, top selling soundtrack album…the works. Mahogany and Sparkle followed and were fairly successful, too.

Ease on down to 1978, and they’re embarking on their biggest venture, yet. A big-budget adaptation of the hit stage play, The Wiz. It’s an inner city version of Wizard Of Oz starring, of course, 33 year old Diana Ross as little Dorothy.

Um. Wait. What?

Well, I guess we’ll have to change THAT character. Now she’s a 24 year old, depressed school teacher in New Jersey. She still lives with her Auntie Em (Theresa Merritt) and the whole family is over for Thanksgiving. At the worst time, Toto runs out into the blizzard, because that’s what dogs do, right? Most of us can’t get our dogs to go out to pee when it’s sprinkling. Toto runs out into the worst blizzard the Northeast has seen in 20 years.

Anyway, Dorothy gets sucked into Oz by a snow flurry. The rest of the story is pretty much the same, but with an inner city, African-American bent. The Munchkins were all turned into graffiti by the Wicked Witch of the East. The Scarecrow (Michael Jackson in his first role) is stuck on a pole and a bunch of creepy crows won’t let him down. The Tin Man (Nipsey Russell) was a mechanical huckster at Coney Island. And The Cowardly Lion (Ted Ross, who was the only actor brought in from the play) was a stone lion at the NYC Public Library.
The sets and costumes are insane. The casting is weird. The movie is so over the top as to be almost gross and disturbing. It was the most expensive movie ever made on location in New York City at the time and one of the biggest flops of the decade. It pretty much destroyed Motown’s feature film branch, making them focus on television from then on. (Including, of all things, Lonesome Dove!)

But there’s something charming about the movie. As much as it disturbed me, I also kinda liked it. Michael is maybe about the only bright spot in the casting (although, the makeup on his neck is off-putting), but the spectacle makes it nearly worth the two hours and fourteen minutes it takes to watch it.

It’s definitely better than The Apple, but that’s the movie that it makes me think of, for better or worse. Mostly worse.

RETURN TO OZ (1985)
Directed by Walter Murch
Written by Walter Murch/Gill Dennis
Based on the books by L Frank Baum

Sometimes, it takes a little while to get a sequel off the ground. Sometimes, it takes decades. Of course,Return To Oz wasn’t meant to be a direct sequel to the 1939 film we all know and love. It was meant to be a film that continued the story in a way that was more in line with the original books.

What that did, though, was make for a creepy film that only Disney in the 80s would have made.

Dorothy (Fairuza Balk in her first film) has changed since the tornado that took her to the far away land of Oz. She’s sleeping a lot and telling stories that no one can really believe. That’s why Auntie Em (Piper Laurie) wants to take her to the hospital to get some good, old-fashioned electro-shock therapy. (It was new back in 1900 when the film is set.) That oughta drive those silly thoughts RIGHT out of her head!

Before the doctor can pump four million volts through her, the hospital is struck by lightning and Dorothy escapes with the help of a mysterious little girl. The two get caught up in a raging river during the storm and Dorothy ends up in a pen with her pet chicken. How the chicken got there, I dunno.

Needless to say, she ends up in Oz again. but it’s not the Oz that we all remember. It’s dilapidated and ruined. Someone called The Nome King (Nicol Williamson) has taken all of the Emeralds out of the Emerald City and broken up the Yellow Brick Road.

Dorothy meets Tik-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead and The Gump, and they all help her find the Scarecrow, who was crowned king not long after Dorothy left.

Oh, and all of the people of Oz have been turned to stone, including the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion.

There’s also a princess who changes out her head all the time and a punk gang called The Wheelers because they have squeaky wheels attached to their hands and feet. And that damn chicken is really annoying when she learns how to talk.

Somehow, I actually enjoyed this film less than The Wiz.

There are folks out there who love it, though. It’s a weird and creepy film that takes a world that we all love and destroys it. Sometimes, I like that. And there’s even some cool stuff going on here. But you can tell that budget constraints kept it from being everything that Walter Murch wanted it to be.

Still not a bad way to waste an hour and a half.

Peter Weir's Fiendishly Funny Debut THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS

Written by Generoso Fierro

During the idyllic opening scene of Peter Weir’s debut film, The Cars That Ate Paris, we spy a well-to-do couple who are footloose and fancy free getting into their snappy roadster.

They are wearing the finest vines, and sport that seventies natural-looking hair while smoking fine uppity cigarettes as they take a drive in the scenic Australian countryside, but things don’t stay lovely for long as the couple is hurled off the side of a hill and killed in a gruesome roll out. Crash. You see, our commercial-quality travelers were living the high life that few lived in 1970s Australia, but now they have crossed the town line of Paris – Paris, Australia that is, where cars and the people who drive them become the solution to a community’s financial woes.

Yes, all is not well in the Weir’s genre-defying town of Paris, Australia.

Boston Cinegeeks! We've Got Passes For GREEN ROOM Starring Patrick Stewart!

$

Green Room is a brilliantly crafted and wickedly fun horror-thriller starring Patrick Stewart as a diabolical club owner who squares off against an unsuspecting but resilient young punk band.

Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon. What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see. Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the club’s depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise. But while Darcy and his henchmen think the band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain’t Rights prove themselves much more cunning and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown.

Intense, emotional, and ingeniously twisted, Green Room is genre filmmaking at its best and most original. Saulnier continues to build his reputation as one of the most exciting and distinctive directors working today, with a movie that’s completely different from his previous, highly acclaimed Blue Ruin, but which is just as risk-taking and even more full of twists. The entire cast deliver first-rate performances, but Patrick Stewart gives a transformative and brilliantly devious turn as Darcy—elegant yet lethal, droll yet terrifying, Stewart makes the film simply unforgettable.

THE JUNGLE BOOK (review)

Review by Greg Vellante
Produced by Jon Favreau, Brigham Taylor
Screenplay by Justin Marks
Based on The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling
Directed by Jon Favreau
Starring Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba,
Lupita Nyong'o, Scarlett Johansson, Neel Sethi
Giancarlo Esposito, Christopher Walken

I found myself bursting at the seams with simultaneous nostalgia, zeal and cinematic affection during Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, a film which feels so instantaneously classic and modern that to describe its appeal is somewhat difficult to accurately nail on the head.

To imbibe its narrative is akin to an Old Fashioned served straight up, with a hefty serving of meat-and-potatoes style three-act structure.

However, on an aesthetic level, it’s as if your visual taste buds have never quite encountered these mechanical familiarities before—seen this way, felt this way, experienced this way.

I often loathe the term “experience” in regards to big-screen spectacles and 3D gimmicks, as it often deteriorates the true art of cinema, yet The Jungle Book utilizes experience in an effortless blend with what makes film-going so grand and magical. Its orchestrations work like a composer crafting classical music in a way that makes people feel like they’re hearing it for the very first time.

Those familiar with Rudyard Kipling’s books and the 1967 animated Walt Disney film know the story. Mowgli, a “man cub” raised by wolves, must reluctantly leave the family he’s come to know and return to the “man village” after his life is threatened by the man-hungry tiger Shere Khan. Venturing off into the jungle with his panther guardian, Bagheera, and later encountering the blithe bear Balloo, Mowgli learns life lessons and how to face his fears through adventure, danger, and everything in between.

And for those unfamiliar, I envy you as Favreau’s film is one hell of a way to be initiated.
