10 of The Best ZOMBIES!

$
0
0

Zombies are all over the place nowadays.

Commercials, kids shows, videogames, mainstream television… often considered a reflection of consumerism itself, it’s really no surprise zombies are bigger than ever.

It’s not news to anyone currently alive in 2016, but The Walking Dead is one of the largest television shows on the air and there’s no end in sight. It’s amassed a fandom paralleled to the likes of Harry Potter, Twilight, or Doctor Who.

However, legit, old school zombies are gnarly.

Not just TV-14 Are You Afraid of the Dark gnarly, but OHMYGODKILLITWITHFIRE gnarly.

I’m of the mind that practical effects reign supreme and, while I’m not the biggest TWD fan, god bless ‘em for utilizing some SFX. And I’ll have you know, I’ve had zombies on the brain for decades now. (I imagine someday I’ll go to prison for puns á la Fahrenheit 451).

For you, my beloved, I’ve compiled some of the best zombies ever in modern cinema to date.

These ten zombies will gross you out, make you gag and cause you to shift in your chair. Just like they’re supposed to.

So, go on, fill up on this sweet amalgam of juicy, gory information because, you know, after all, you are what you eat.

Or so I’m told.

FOG! Chats With Filmmaker BETH B.!

Interview conducted by Lily and Generoso Fierro

As part of our continuing series of interviews conducted in conjunction with the Underground USA Series at The Cinefamily in Los Angeles, we have been able to speak with some of the most original American directors who began to redefine independent cinema beginning in the late 1970s through the 1980s and today.

From this series, we sought out director Beth B not only because we have long been fascinated with her 1993 film, Two Small Bodies, which is based on Neal Bell’s stage play treatment of the tragic case of Alice Crimmins, but also due to her participation in the No Wave movement, which was founded in New York City in the late 1970s and largely inspired this interview to take place.

Beginning with her first film, G-Man in 1978 to her 1982 film, Vortex, which will be screened at Cinefamily on March 24th, to her soon to be released documentary about her artist mother, Ida Applebroog, entitled, Call Her Applebroog, Beth B remains a fiercely independent and intensely personal filmmaker.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (review)

Review by Joe Yezukevich
Produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder
Written by Chris Terrio, David S. Goyer
Based on Characters published by DC Comics
Directed by Zack Snyder
Starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams,
Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons,
Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Holly Hunter

Imagine this: a group of writers get blind drunk and savage a comic book store.

In a moment of semi-lucid planning, they decide to tear up classic graphic novels and randomly staple them back together.

Then, they use these Frankencomics as a screenplay to launch a colossal brand.

If you were to tell me that this was a behind the scenes Blu-ray extra for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, I would not doubt your word a bit.

The movie moves along at a snail's pace in some seemingly strange attempt to either create depth or to stop and try to figure out which direction to move in next. There are moments that made me hopeful, but those are few and rarely brought any satisfaction.

I SAW THE LIGHT (review)

Review by Sharon Knolle
Produced by Marc Abraham, Aaron L. Gilbert,
Brett Ratner, G. Marq Roswell
Based on Hank Williams: The Biography by Colin Escott,
George Merritt, William MacEwen
Written and Directed by Marc Abraham
Starring Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olsen, Cherry Jones,
Bradley Whitford, Maddie Hasson, Wrenn Schmidt

Tom Hiddleston was brilliant as Loki and perfectly charming in Crimson Peak and War Horse, and I'm looking forward to seeing him in High-Rise and The Night Manager.

But the elegant Brit is badly miscast as country music legend Hank Williams in this disappointing biopic.

Lord knows Hiddleston tries his best: He does his own singing and clearly studied what footage there is of Williams's onstage performances, but, sadly, you never buy him as the man who hauntingly crooned “I'm So Lonesome Could Die.”

About the only thing Hiddleston has in common with Williams is his lanky figure. He doesn't look a bit like Williams and it's impossible to accept this polished, sophisticated actor as “The Hillbilly Drifter” of Alabama. Making the decision to do his own singing was a disastrous call. While that approach surprisingly worked for Sissy Spacek in Coal Miner's Daughter and Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix in I Walk the Line, Hiddleston (whose voice is quite lovely in its own right) never captures the lonesome twang that made Williams so memorable.

DAREDEVIL SEASON 2 Sets the Stage for CIVIL WAR

Written by Erin Maxwell

Netflix and Marvel continue to expand and define the confines of the superhero universe with the second season of Daredevil.  In round two, new moral conflicts arise, giving the red-suited vigilante a bit of a pause while providing audience a sneak peek to large issues on the horizon.

After the forced retirement of last year’s big bad Kingpin (brilliantly played with extraordinary depth by Vincent D'Onofrio) has been filled by bringing out two more heavy hitters from the Marvel Universe, Elektra and The Punisher.

Netflix is once again working its magic, setting right the wrongs of the cinematic universe that majorly mishandled these comic characters, leaving them flailing after several movie misfires.

This time around, Jon Bernthal takes the reigns of the tormented Frank Castle aka The Punisher, a one-man firing squad who, unlike Daredevil, has no lessons to teach and doesn’t strive to bring the bad guys to justice. He just wants to kill bad people and eradicate the scum of Hell’s Kitchen.

His actions open up an interesting morality issue that becomes a major conflict within the Marvel Universe: Should superheroes continue to work outside the law?

Can a hero continue to be effective if he or she has to follow the same guidelines and laws as everyone else?

Is vigilante justice still justice if the hero continues to work outside the law?

What if a biological terror agent wiped out most of humanity, and our domesticated animals were left in charge? How would our dogs and cats set about ruling and rebuilding the world? Ransom, the leader of the Dog Tribe, has been murdered by a creature known as the Endark. An English Pointer named Legend reluctantly rises to lead in his place, vowing to kill the monster once and for all. From acclaimed novelist Samuel Sattin and award-winning illustrator Chris Koehler comes LEGEND, where cat technology rules, dogs partner with hawks, and humans may be the most beastly creatures of all.

Arriving this this May from Z2 Comics, LEGEND tackles some of the important issues facing us today -- religious conflict, opposing political systems, and the environment through an engaging tale told through the eyes of our own best friends. Since dogs actually see the world differently than we do, Chris’ use of color echoes Sam’s subtext, bathing the canine world in a chromatic, saturated glow. Sam who was Chris’ student at California College of the Arts and is an artist himself, and Chris, whose illustrations have appeared in The Atlantic and Wired, have collaborated for a comic that recalls beloved stories while creating something entirely new.

The Art Of Celebrity Video Game Endorsement

$
0
0
Using celebrities to sell your games console or game is not a new phenomena, companies know that celebrity driven advertisement equals huge uptake in sales and brand awareness. I can't say I blame these celebrities either, many of them are huge fans of the gaming industry and genuinely want to endorse the things they love, much like Robin Williams (rest his soul) and his daughter Zelda in those Nintendo adverts for the DS version of Ocarina Of Time and then again a few years back for the Nintendo Wii.

Incidentally, Williams did actually name his daughter Zelda after The Legend Of Zelda games!

Though, there are some celebrities who are less bothered by the product because they will do absolutely anything if you waft an insane sum of money at them, like have their face plastered all over dog turds (I mean, I bet if you told Shia LeBoeuf it was 'art', he'd do it...actually, he'd probably do it free...bad example, sorry).

Anyway, the reason I'm writing about celebrity endorsements is because I've noticed mobile games have jumped on the bandwagon lately; there's Kate Upton in those dreadfully exploitative Game Of War ads, Mobile Strike fronted by Arnold Schwarzenegger and even Academy award winner (let me say that again, ACADEMY AWARD WINNER!!) Christoph Waltz in the Clash Of Clans advertisements.

But it's not just women's objectified bodies or muscular action heroes or even esteemed, award winning ac-TORS who advertise games because as Atari proved in the 80s, even blind celebrities can endorse your product:

Before Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, which pitted The Caped Crusader against The Man of Steel, the two iconic characters were best friends in comics and other media.

For decades the two characters teamed up monthly in the comic book series, World's Finest and appeared on television screens together with Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Batman's sidekick Robin on various Super Friends series.

With today's release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, we see the two icons causing millions of dollars of property damage.  I prefer the days when the duo got along; it's lonely for a superhero without a BFF.

Ttoday we've teamed with our friends at TV Store Online teamed up to honor the characters rather than mourn their evolution by giving away two t-shirt prize packages to FOG! readers!

Guest Post: MY FAVORITE UNDERRATED CONSPIRACY MOVIES

Written by Johnny Shaw
In my new novel, Floodgate, the story centers around a long hidden conspiracy that has been pulling the strings of Auction City for almost sixty years. When ex-cop Andy Destra unearths the truth, he is sucked into this world and ultimately becomes a part of it.

Before I became a novelist, I worked mostly as a screenwriter. Film will always be my first love and movies inform my writing just as much as the novels that I read.

From the start, Floodgate was my attempt to create a literary version of Big Trouble in Little China.

So when I was asked to put a list of conspiracy movies together, I knew I couldn’t just throw a standard list together. There are plenty of lists out there, I’m sure, that have all the classics on them. Not that The Manchurian Candidate, Network, The Conversation, or Chinatown aren’t all great movies. They are, some of my favorites.

But why make a list that already exists?

Instead I put together a list of some of my personal favorites.

Dark Horse Comics Unveils Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart’s Cover for The Trade Paperback of HELLBOY IN HELL Volume 2

Legendary comic book writer/artist Mike Mignola will conclude his critically acclaimed series HELLBOY IN HELL in 2016, when Dark Horse Comics publishes the final and tenth issue on June 1 and the trade paperback, HELLBOY IN HELL Volume 2 which collects issues 6 through 10, in October. In advance of the release of the series’ conclusion, Dark Horse Comics has released the cover to HELLBOY IN HELL Volume 2 by Mignola and award-winning colorist Dave Stewart. Following the conclusion of HELLBOY IN HELL, Mignola will take a year off from illustrating interior comic book pages in order to focus on fine art painting.

“Doing the cover to this collection was tough and of course I overthought the hell out of it,” said Mignola. “It's the end of the series and so much happens. How do I get that onto a cover? In the end, after doing two self-rejected covers, I decided to just illustrate the title of the book. THE DEATH CARD. There is also a fairly subtle nod to the climax of the book in there, but mostly it’s illustrating the title while trying to do a composition very similar to the cover of the first collection. Since the two books do make one story, I really wanted to design the book covers so they would work well side by side.”
