JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE DARKSEID WAR PART 1 (review)

Review by Clay N Ferno
Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Jason Fabok, Various
Publisher: DC Comics
Pub. Date: March 09, 2016
Price: $24.99
UPC: 978140125977852499

In this week leading up to the biggest DC movie event ever, the debut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (still a mouthful), we've got a hardcover release of volume 7 of Justice League from Geoff Johns with art by Jason Fabok.

Volume 7: Darkseid War Part 1 pits the New 52 Justice League against a reimagined Fourth World and introduces some new and interesting characters for the modern age.

These are definitely comics more skewed toward the longstanding DC Comics fan than the casual reader, but if someone were to wander off of the streets and grab this hardcover in preparation for the movie (a scenario often prescribed by comics journalists like myself, but rarely do the masses imbibe) they may be entertained but will certainly leave with a lot of questions.

Johns, recently announcing yet another 'Crisis' aka Rebirth, lays the groundwork for the theory of the DC multiverse in Darkseid War.  Besides the usual cast on the side of the righteous, we see Darkseid pitted against the powerful Anti-Monitor and a view of how these worlds came to be.

MARVEL Debuts Action-Packed BLACK PANTHER Merchandising Program

First Film Appearance and New Comic Spark Robust Product Lineup
Led by Hasbro, LEGO, Mad Engine, Funko and More

There's no doubt that there's been an under representation of minorities in comic book movies.  In the DC film universe, we've only seen Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight series and race switched Perry White played by Lawrence Fishburne in Man of Steel and the upcoming Batman V Superman.  Part Native Hawaiian Jason Momoa will portray Aquaman and African American Ray Fisher is playing Cyborg in the upcoming slate, but as of yet DC has shown no diverse superheroes onscreen as of yet.

Marvel fares better, but at this time, none of the characters have headlined their own film yet with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Dave Bautitsta as Drax.  But that's about to change.

With the release of Captain America: Civil War, we'll see Chadwick Boseman play T'Challa aka The Black Panther before his solo film arrives on July 8, 2018.  And although Disney has received criticism in the past for the lack of merchandising of female characters, based on the press release after the jump there's plenty of choices for fans of The Black Panther.

Hacking Movies Then and Now

The threat of cybercrime is one that constantly keeps us on our toes when we're online, but it's also something that movie directors have used to keep us on the edge of our seats over the years.

Ever since the dawn of the Internet and then the World Wide Web as Tim Berners-Lee called theorised in the 1980s, the concept of hacking is one that's fascinated script writers and movie directors. Indeed, the first major movie to feature hacking was WarGames in 1983.

Starring Matthew Broderick, this pre-Windows movie saw David (played by Broderick) use an IMSAI 8080 and a 300 baud modem to tap into the military's computer system, treat it like a game and almost start World War III.

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL (review)

Review by Sharon Knolle
Produced by Sarah Green, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones
Written and Directed by Jeff Nichols
Starring Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst,
Adam Driver, Sam Shepard, Jaeden Lieberher

There's a really great movie struggling to get out of Midnight Special, an indie road movie-Close Encounters mash-up from writer-director Jeff Nichols in which a father (Michael Shannon) tries to keep Alton, his son with special powers (Jaeden Lieberher), out of the hands of a religious cult and the FBI.

While Nichols has only previously hinted at supernatural elements in Take Shelter, in which Shannon has a premonition of looming disaster, here he goes the full Spielberg.  That worked fine for J.J. Abrams in Super 8, a lovingly crafted homage to Close Encounters that, while derivative, evoked the same sense of wonder and awe we expect from Spielberg.

While Nichols manages to pull off hokier aspects of his story – Alton's eyes emit a powerful white light so often it becomes tiresome – he's not able to convey the bone-deep love of the genre and wide-eyed geekiness of a Spielberg or an Abrams.

The characters, despite the actors' best efforts, remain ciphers: Alton is an odd blank who we never really care about. There's little mystery that he's not really human, but, beyond a liking for comic books, we never learn anything about who he is. We see and hear about the strange, otherworldly things he can do but, honestly, the little alien robot in Earth to Echo had more personality.

Written by Erin Maxwell

On March 20, Mr. Fred McFeely Rogers was born in the great town of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During his seventy somewhat years on this planet, we was an educator, a minister, a composer, an author and an activist.

He was a much better person than you or I.

He could take a joke, help out someone in need, and did his best whenever he could.

Many of us grew up with Mr. Rogers, who taught us many, many things.

Let’s take a moment to put our cynicism aside and remember the great man. Here are 10 examples of why Mr. Rogers is America’s Ghandi:

Four Color, a new trading card series by The Drawn Word, will collect as many obscure and public domain comic book characters as possible. The Kickstarter-funded card series, which will come out in 20-card packs, launches today.

“When I first started learning about comics in high school, I was fascinated with the amount of old characters who’d fallen between the cracks of comics history,” The Drawn Word’s Christopher Irving says. “Since getting into the trading card game with the Madman Comin’ Atcha 3D trading card set (with conversions by Christian LeBlanc), the Amazing Heroes cards, and the Captain Action pack, I decided it was time to collect as many of these characters in trading card form.”

The New GHOSTBUSTERS Are Here. Really, It's Fine.

0
0

After all the speculation and debate, on March 3 we finally got our first trailer of the newGhostbusters movie.

Is it a sequel, or a reboot? Are these characters a Peter-Ray-Egon-Winston setup of types, like the Carrie-Samantha-Charlotte-Miranda foursome of Sex and the City?

We still don’t know.

But, oh boy, the debates continue as we get four women strapping on proton packs and slingin’ plasm because – that’s right – bustin’ makes them feel good.

The new Ghostbusters movie, like Batman in The Dark Knight, has become a symbol upon which we have laid all our troubles. With reboots and revivals, with character diversity and identity politics, with debating the quality of comedy styles and modern filmmaking.

I’m long past debating the idea that society didn’t really want more Ghostbusters. I’m also done with decrying this geek-franchise age of Hollywood in which studios are hungry for blockbusters, reviving old and familiar properties left and right.

So it is, so it was before, so it shall be.

Man, I love talking about comics.

So the heck with everything, here goes!

Batgirl Volume 2: Family Business
Collects Batgirl #41-45 DC Sneak Peek Batgirl #1 and Batgirl Annual #3
Written by Cameron Stewart & Brenden Fletcher and Illustrated by Babs Tarr
Published by DC Comics

Let me start off by saying I have never been a fan of Batgirl. The concept always seems a bit silly to me. I have also felt the same way about Robin. They both always kind of killed the intensity of Batman for me. Batgirl would have to be done in a very particular way for me to like it. Fortuntely, this book was done in a very particular way. Thank god.

This book picks up where the previous book left off. They have put Barbara Gordon in college, made her trendy. Dressed her trendy. And it works in a surprisingly wonderful way. Stewart and Fletcher write the stories with a nice flair and fun that lacks in a lot of books. The stories are emotional, heartfelt, smart. Kudos to them.

The real star here however is Babs Tarr.

Her art is pretty great.

Cartoony? Yes. But what an impact she has with it. Tarr fills each page with such style and grace, you just want more all the time. So much so, that when she skips an issue, you really feel it. That's the only thing that this book suffered on. The fill in artists, while good, can't match her. She's the glue that holds this act together.

They turned Batgirl into tween book that I should hate. But I liked it.

And as long as Tarr is drawing it? I'm there.

RATING: B+

The Path To Justice: The Amazonian Princess and T-Minus One Week

0

I saved the examination of Wonder Woman for last because while the clash between Superman and Batman is selling the show, Wonder Woman’s inclusion is the most important silver screen debut in a superhero blockbuster.

Wonder Woman is the one major comic character that hasn’t been featured in a movie. She is the measuring stick for how all female superheroes are judged. Wonder Woman believes in equality for herself, her people, and anyone else who is the victim of tyranny or oppression.

Canonically speaking, Diana Prince doesn’t just share the field with Batman and Superman, she is their equal and this film needs to begin the process of establishing that point across a broader spectrum than just the printed page. Gal Gadot is the big unknown, as she is known more for her resume on the runway than her work in front of the camera.

While she did a serviceable job with her role in the most recent The Fast and the Furious films, the performances were short and didn’t reveal whether she is suited for a lead role, especially this one.

While we can’t accurately critique the Israeli fashion model, there are a few actresses who have worn the star crested tiara and magic lasso of truth.

An accomplished comics writer and scripter, Orlando is no stranger to DCE, receiving critical acclaim from outlets including Polygon.com (“Best Comics of 2015”), New York Times, io9.com (“Top 20 Comics of 2015”) and a nomination from GLAAD in the “Outstanding Comic Book” category for his run on Midnighter, the first openly gay male character to star in a comic book.
