Fun With Vinyl: Taking a Trip Down The Nostalgic Highway

Written by John Teehan

I don't want to get all hipster on you good people, but there really is something special about vinyl records. All those nicks and grooves being picked up by an actual needle and being interpreted and amplified into actual sound...tell me that's not a more honest rendering of audio than digital recordings.

Oh, digital is great and all, but lately I have come to understand the renewed fascination with vinyl, and have, myself, been enjoying a sort of rediscovery.

As I've been on this little journey of rediscovery, I've been recalling some of the albums of my youth which included a surprising number of spoken word stories. Most of these were for little kids--fairy tales and whatnot. One thing I seemed to have missed out on as a child was the story albums for popular cartoon and television shows of the time. Stuff that, even as an adult, I still dig. I knew they had to have existed, and it didn't take me long to find them.

Here are but four examples of fun stories, with classic, nostalgia-laden pop culture ties readily available on YouTube, but dating back to the glorious age of vinyl.

Audrey Hepburn was never in a Hitchcock film, which seems like such a strange fact.

I guess she wasn’t a blonde, but it just seems like she would have been a great Hitch lady.

She did, however, make two films in the mid-60s that may as well have been Hitchcock films.

Series 1 Display Box
Art by Ken Steacy, 1993

A fanciful look at fugitive droids under siege by Steve Ditko,
the reclusive comic book legend famed for Spider-Man and other Marvel greats.

George Evans captured the hellish flavor of the carbon-freeze sequence from
The Empire Strikes Back
 with acrylics and colored pencil

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola turned his considerable pen-and-ink
skill to this depiction of an imposing Tusken Raider on Tatooine.

Ink and watercolors were used in this atmospheric portrait of Wicket, an Ewok
on Endor’s forest moon, as rendered by celebrated fantasy artist William Stout.

Colleen Doran missed out on a chance to render villainous Lumiya
for the comics, so she relished this opportunity to create a dramatic, full-figure study.

Z2 Comics Announces INDOCTRINATION, an Apocalyptic Political Thriller

$

“How do you kill an idea?”

Across the dusty plains of America’s southwest, a deadly storm is brewing. A string of murders portend the sinister designs of an infamous terrorist to bring about the end times. Two FBI agents have heeded the signs, and only their rogue actions—aided by a potentially untrustworthy expatriate with deep ties to the terrorist—can push this darkness back.

This June, comic book writer and novelist Michael Moreci (Roche Limit, Burning Fields) and artist and former political operative Matt Battaglia will unleash INDOCTRINATION, a comic book series about America’s terrifying underbelly—of death cults and sleeper cells, serial killers and apocalyptic nightmares. INDOCTRINATION follows these two FBI agents as they develop a complicated relationship with an infamous terrorist, in an attempt to solve a string of grizzly, seemingly related murders. Mixing elements of True Detective with Seven, this new series from Z2 Comics captures the definition of fear in the 21st century.

“With INDOCTRINATION, we really wanted to create a thrilling, entertaining story that is also a way to explore the reality of death cults like ISIS, and the terror they instill in us which is constantly pulsing beneath the surface of American culture,” says Michael Moreci, a former journalist who recently signed a two-book deal with St. Martin’s Press. “Collaborating with Matt Battaglia has been ideal, because he’s a gifted artist who has also been able to use his background in politics to inform his work on INDOCTRINATION.”

At its core, INDOCTRINATION is an exploration of the power of ideas, and how ideology can drive mankind to act in horrifying ways. The series marks the first full length illustrated comics work of Battaglia who has previously worked for a Washington DC Super PAC.

“With INDOCTRINATION, we’re excited to publish our first modern, politically-minded series,” says Josh Frankel, Z2 Comics Co-Publisher. “The story has serious content, but it is first and foremost a riveting read, with gorgeous, detailed characters who really pull readers into their world.”

After the jump check out a sneak preview from the first issue.

FOG! Takes a Listen to BATMAN: THE ANIMATED PODCAST

"I am vengeance. I am the night. I am also... A PODCAST!"

From there, the familiar Danny Elfman opening theme song ushers in another episode of Batman: The Animated Podcast, but now accompanied by operatic singers who, in song, tell us what the show is about. Quite simply – it's a podcast about Batman that features people who worked on the classic animated series.

Justin Michael is our host, and although I was not familiar with him, or his other podcast, Before You Were Funny, prior to this podcast, he's proven to be a rock solid anchor for this show. His love of the animated series shines through with each episode and he's more than capable of keeping the conversation flowing and funny – not as easy as it sounds. He makes no apologies over the fact that BTAS is his all time favorite show, and for that alone, the show works, fueled by passion.

The podcast recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, but it didn't take long for it to find its rhythm early on. Each episode kicks things off with Today's Fan, where Justin talks with a fan of the show about the episode and they go off on a number of tangents about their introduction to the show, their reactions to what events took place in the episode, and anything else that comes to mind. These fans are, more often than not, people working in various capacities in the entertainment industry from writing cartoons to improv performers and everything in between. It’s a great way to get the ball rolling with humorous asides and insights that are reminiscent of the types of conversation you might overhear at your local comic shop or in line for a panel at a convention.

This part though just scratches the surface before we move on to the special guests.

Interview conducted by Lenny Schwartz

Ken Marcus is the writer of the comic book Super Human Resources. He's also a wonderful human being and supporter of indie comics.
Ken and I got to talk about his book which volume one is available now and volume 2 is forthcoming.

Here we go!

FOG!: Ken, greetings! Before we get started talking about Super Human Resources, tell me a little about you and your history. I tried googling you and all I found was a "Ken Marcus erotica guy." I'm assuming that's not you. So tell us about you?

Ken Marcus: Yes, whatever you do, do not go to kenmarcus.com while at the office. Seriously not safe for work. That’s a completely different guy. His job looks a lot more interesting than mine, I will say. Sidebar: every once in a while, I get some creepy message on Facebook or Linked In wanting to know if that’s me.

Um, it’s not.

As for my job, I’m a writer in advertising. I guess I’m most known for working on GEICO commercials like Hump Day, The Final Countdown, Salt N’ Pepa’s Push It and Peter Pan.

Before you hate me, in the “Plus” column I’m also a long-time comics fan. We’re about to publish the second volume of our comic Super Human Resources through Action Lab Entertainment.

Last installment, I listed nine horror or exploitation pictures from cinema's beginnings up through the mid 1960s that prominently feature menacing carnival acts, workers, or freaks.

Now I've got nine more, dating from the late 1960s into the early 1980s where my territory ends.

As with the films listed in the previous installment, virtually all of these films are good.

Filmmakers seem to get inspired by carnivalesque spectacle, showmanship, and thrills.
