THE IMAGE REVOLUTION Documentary Needs Your Support!

Sequart and Respect Films are proud to announce their upcoming documentary about the history of Image Comics! (A Kickstarter campaign has been created to help fund the project.)

Comics in Focus: The Image Revolution will examine one of the most important and daring moves in modern comic book history: Twenty years ago, a group of artists left Marvel Comics to create their own company, a company that continues to influence mainstream comics and culture to this day. Image Comics began as more than just a publisher — it was a response to years of creator mistreatment, and it changed comics forever.

The Image Revolution will tell the amazing story of this from-scratch company, from its founders’ work at Marvel, through Image’s early days, the ups and downs of the ’90s, and the publisher’s new generation of creator-owned properties like The Walking Dead. We will tell this story through new interviews with the people who made it happen. And what better time than during Image’s 20th anniversary to do it?

The film will be produced by the same Sequart / Respect team behind the critically-acclaimed documentaries Grant Morrison: Talking with Gods (now available on DVD) and Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts (out on DVD in mid March).

This will be the second (after Comics in Focus: Chris Claremont’s X-Men) in a new series of documentaries offering in-depth looks at significant works and moments that shaped comics history. These documentaries will be released through direct download and online DVD sales.

We have turned to Kickstarter to help fund this project. This is your chance to support discussion about the merits of comics and to help document stories about the people who have had a part in shaping contemporary pop culture.

Rewards include the documentary as a DVD and / or digital download, a “Thanks” and other credits in the film, and digital access to extra interview footage that won’t be included in the film. Rewards also include books and feature-length films from Sequart's catalog.

For more information, visit the project’s Kickstarter page or its page on Sequart.

Navigating the Cloud

$

Three years ago, in one of my first columns for Forces of Geek, I wrote about the promise of the cloud.

At the time, I felt that local storage and local apps trumped cloud-based solutions.

Three years resemble three centuries in the world of technology, much has changed, and I’ve changed my tune a bit. I find myself using a variety of cloud services more than I ever thought I would, though I’m not by any means all in.

My new Macbook Air is part of the reason I’ve decided to use cloud solutions more than I thought I would. It has minimal on-board storage - I’ve sacrificed gigabytes for SSD speed. And the iPad changed things as well. It too has minimal on-board storage, and a slew of apps that make tapping into cloud services very appealing.

At the end of the day, my digital life is still more about local storage, owning content, and doing things the old school, manual way. But there are some cloud options that I’ve fallen for, and have even become essential for me. Others, I’ve passed on.

Here’s what I’m using, what I’m not using, and why.

What I’m using:

Dropbox
Dropbox has become totally essential for me. I actually prefer to have the single Dropbox folder that I can dump documents into for easy cloud-syncing, as opposed to a service like Box.net where multiple folders are synced. Using one folder forces me to keep better track of my files. The act of manually putting something in my Dropbox folder gives me a sense of safety that I know what is being synced and what isn’t. I also only use Dropbox for light documents.

Gmail & Google Calendar
I haven’t used a local mail app for email in ages. I do for work, but I don’t for my personal Gmail. Gmail is almost 100% up, and is insanely fast, especially when searching. The Gmail UI is unbeatable. Google Calendar is fantastic as well, and it’s sharing capabilities are perfect for my needs.

Google Docs
I wrote this column in Google Docs. I’ve been a fan of Apple’s TextEdit app for super simple note taking, list making, and basic text editing, and found myself saving most of my documents in my Dropbox folder. I live in a browser most of the time anyway, so I’ve mostly switched to Google Docs at this point for text editing. It’s light and fast and constantly auto-saves. Google also makes it dead simple to download everything in one shot to my computer - a sort of “reverse backup” from the cloud, instead of to the cloud.

Notespark
Similar to Google Docs, this is very minimalistic note storage service that offers note sharing. I started using it for work, to share simple notes with co-workers, but now rely on it for all of my personal to do lists and notes. I use Google Docs for longer form text editing, but Notespark hits the sweet spot for simple note organization, sharing, and syncing.

Rdio & Netflix
I happily pay for Rdio and Netflix monthly. It is the geek dream realized. Thousands upon thousands of songs and films for a minor fee.

What I’m not using:

Evernote
Evernote is overkill to me. It’s UI is overload. There’s just something about it that I can’t get into. I prefer the simplicity of Notespark.

iCloud
That’s right, I’m not using iCloud. I don’t like that Photostream doesn’t let you remove photos. I also share my Apple ID / iTunes account with my wife. Syncing contacts and calendars just doesn’t make sense in that regard.

iTunes Match
This is tempting I must admit. My iTunes Library is truly massive. But like Dropbox, there’s something I actually enjoy about controlling what syncs in a limited way.

Carbonite
I am not yet using an automatic cloud backup service. Yes, I should be. I do a good job of keeping local backups, though not rotating anything off-site is admittedly foolish. When I look into my crystal ball, I do see something like Carbontite in my future, probably sooner rather than later.

Disney Releases 10-Minute Scene From JOHN CARTER

Disney has released an exclusive ten minute clip from their super expensive March release, John Carter.

(Why they dropped "of Mars," I'll never understand.)

John Carter opens this Friday in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D, yet tracking suggests it will flop, hardcore. Disney has long feared this flop, which is why they cut the budget of another tent-pole release, The Lone Ranger.

Check out the 10-minute scene after the jump!

NEW APP COMBINES RUNNING AND ZOMBIES...Finally, a Way to Get My Fat A$$ Off the Couch and Training For the Zombie Apocalypse

$

For some reason 2012 has been the year that most of my family and friends are actually doing something about losing weight and getting into shape (seriously, so far they have lost a combined trillion pounds or something).

For me, there needs to be a real reason to lay off the Ding-Dongs and I think that training for the Zombie Apocalypse is probably a decent way to herd myself out the door and lose the beer/burrito gut that I have been growing since the late 90s.

At $7.99 the App isn't cheap but it's a hell of a lot more reasonable than the gym membership that I pay for and never go to.

After the break is an info video on the Zombie Run App that should get you revved up and ready to run. And if it doesn't, well at least you know you'll die in an interesting way, what with the brain-eating and what-not.

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

The Cape #4 of 4 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Joe Hill and Jason Ciarmella
Art: Zach Howard
Colors: Nelson Daniel
Publisher: IDW
Price: $3.99

I did not want to read this book.

I knew once I did it would be over, as this is the last book of its run.

We discover the root of evil inside Eric and it goes back a lot further than anyone imagined. Nicky is the only one left to stop him but it has already come at a heavy price. During their fight, Nicky tells Eric it’s all in his head and Eric replies “You have no idea what’s in my head.

A two page layout depicts what is in Eric’s head and it was beautifully drawn and creatively awesome.

If you haven’t read this series than please get the graphic novel that will be released in the future because this is one of those books that you will remember forever.

Grade: A

Justice League #6
Writer: Geoff Johns
Art: Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Sandra Hope and Mark Irwin
Colors: Alex Sinclair, Tony Avina and Hi-Fi
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.99

I was excited to see how this was going to all unfold as we discover that Darkseid is looking for something that is very important to him.

He feels the Kryptonian will help him after some “persuasion” and Batman goes to Apokalips to rescue him.

This is the last issue of the current story arc where the time has come for the League to gel as a team. Jim Lee’s action scenes really drive the story as this book was more slugfest than Edgar Allan Poe.

This issue also has a interesting backup story involving Pandora, the hooded woman who merged the universes at the end of Flashpoint. Another character is introduced and the name Spectre is mentioned.

The whole thing is intriguing and will cause some speculation amongst fans.

Grade: B-

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Microseries #3 (Donatello)
Writer: Brian Lynch and Tom Watz
Art: Valerio Schiti
Colors: Scarlet Gothica
Publisher: IDW
Price: $3.99

Have you ever had an argument with some random person on a message board and they got under our skin so much that you would probably hit them if you ever saw them on the street?

We get this and much more as Donatello is full of fun. He is my least favorite Ninja Turtle, but I found his microseries issue the most entertaining thus far.

We get a lot of insight into Donatello’s character and how even a super smart turtle can find himself in dumb situations. The art work did a great job of depicting facial reactions and fight scenes.

All in all, a great book to check out.

Grade B+

Usagi Yojimbo #144
Writer: Stan Sakai
Art: Stan Sakai
Colors: Tom Luth
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.50

I think every household should have their own rabbit ronin to defend the evil doers from soy sauce or any other food items for that matter.

In the last issue, Usagi arrived in town and helped put out a fire at a soy sauce brewery. After meeting some of the key players in the trade, some peaceful, some not so peaceful, he suspects the fire was no accident.

Stan Sakai bares his soul into a character that no one on the planet knows better than him. Multiple writers have taken turns with various superheroes, but Yojimbo is Sakai’s creation.

The stories are simple at the core, but that's truly what sets it apart.

There are other black and white comics that do a great job of depicting a story but there is something about the drawing in this book that is head and shoulders above the rest. There is an elegance to the humor, happiness, brutality and murder that takes place in this issue.

Usagi is kind of like that one in a million kid in school who would stand up to the bully in the hallway and do it with such calm precision that you can’t help but admire his spirit.

Grade: B

The Amazing Spider-Man #680
Writer: Dan Slott & Chris Yost
Art: Giusppe Camuncoli & Klaus Janson
Colors: Frank D’Armata
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

Horizon Labs has lost contact with a space station being run by John Jameson and of course, things so wrong and it’s Spider-man to the rescue resulting in an excellent story that is entertaining to read.

The back and forth banter between Spidey and Johnny Storm during the course of the events is hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud.

There is a can’t miss scene where Johnny wants to catch up on all of the TV shows he missed and Pete spoils it for him.

We also come across zombies of a different color as the Sinister Six’s diabolical plan begins to take shape.

As always, the art maintains is vibrant tone. Even though the Pete/Johnny banter steals the show, it doesn’t take away from the overall plot at all which is a real credit to the writing of Slott and Yost.

Grade: A-

The Walking Dead #94
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Art: Charlie Adlard
Cover: Cliff Rathburn
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $2.99

Rick and company head out to find a settlement called “The Hiltop” which is full of food, supplies and peaceful people.

This of course is according to the man they have prisoner who has done nothing to suspect he’s lying but no one is taking any chances.

Later on, the prisoner sets himself free reveals he could have escaped at any time as he informs Rick they he passed the “test”.

The story in a lot of way mirrors what is currently happening on the TV show. Different circumstances but the underlying factors are still the same.

Rick feels he needs to be a better leader by being more proactive and we see traces of him unraveling. By the end of the issue The Walking Dead #94 accomplishes what all great comic books should do, immediately get you pumped for the next installment.

Grade: B+

Avengers #23
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Daniel Acuña
Cover: Renato Guedes
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $3.99

The Avengers are being held captive by H.A.M.M.E.R. and Norman Osborn is not one to be trifled with and he decides to make the Vision an example of his new found power.

Bendis brought an intriguing story to the table because the objective of the bad guys is more complex than trying to take over the world. At the end of the day, you know the Avengers are not going fail and yet I found myself wondering how they were going to escape their predicament.

Daniel Acuña is spot on and shines with the depiction of Captain America and Storm being held captive.

Some feel the Avengers are watered down since every resident super hero is a member. While that bugs me at times, there is nothing watered down about this issue and you will find you made an excellent choice by picking it up.

Grade: B

Angel and Faith #7
Writer: Christos Cage
Artist: Rebekah Isaacs
Colors: Dan Jackso
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.50

We all have done something in life that comes back to haunt us in some way shape or form.

One of those things comes back to haunt Angel as his trip to London forces him to cross paths with Drusilla.

Christos Gage provides a dark and thrilling story that reads like you’re watching the TV series. Rebekah Isaacs' work reminded me of the Tales of the Crypt comics and sets the appropriate tone for what the story is trying to accomplish.

Grade: B

Will Ferrell Says ANCHORMAN 2 Is Still A No Go, But Expect To See STEP BROTHERS 2 Soon

Will Ferrell has revealed that Anchorman 2 is still dead, yet Step Brothers 2 may be happening even sooner than you thought! (Especially if you are like me and thought/hoped it would never happen).

There's not really much more to say about Anchorman 2... Dreamworks wouldn't greenlight it several years ago and they don't intend to anytime soon.

Farrell stated that he, co-star John C. Reilly, and director Adam McKay are going to start writing a script for Step Brothers 2 with the intention of shooting the film this fall.

It's a shame we're getting this sequel and not Anchorman. Anchorman is Ferrell's 2nd best film (behind Old School), while Step Brothers started a string of bad Will Ferrell films that he has yet to break free from.

DANSE MACABRE! Finally, a Ballet Comic Thriller! Image Announces DANCER!

DANSE MACABRE
DANCER, a new thriller from Image Comics in May

Alan Fisher lies about his past. He has to. But in DANCER, a new Image Comics series debuting in May, he must confront his past — in a form that has a very familiar face. Unwittingly pulled into the danger of Alan's life is Quinn, a ballerina. Quinn is used to the pain and discipline behind the graceful movement of her dancing, but how will she deal with a life on the run? And will Alan be able to keep them both safe from the most formidable opponent he has ever faced?

Writer Nathan Edmondson (OLYMPUS, WHO IS JAKE ELLIS?) weaves a dark tale of intrigue and pursuit and artist Nic Klein (VIKING) creates a mood of foreboding as Alan and Quinn flee their pursuer through the heavily shadowed streets of Milan.

"Nic and I have sought to evoke the feel and vibe of the classic spy feature--like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold or The Conversation, and tie that into a modern-day thriller comic," said Edmondson. "So DANCER has a spiraling, complex darkness in it punctuated with all the firepower of a high-octane thriller.

"We wanted to offer a book unlike anything we could find on the bookshelves," Edmondson continued, and the character of Quinn is at the heart of that difference. "At the crux of it all is a vibrant, strong-willed ballerina. She ads a visual and psychological motif to the story and it is through her that we can understand the lead characters in this story."

DANCER #1 (MAR120410) is a full-color 32-page comic for $3.50 available for preorder in the March issue of Previews. It will be in comic book stores and digital platforms on May 16. A four-page preview of DANCER #1 ran in USA Today on January 19.

Kung Fu Zombie Director GEORGE CLARKE Teams With FOG!'s BIG MIKE LEEDER on SPLASH AREA!

Described as "Killer Clowns from Northern Ireland," Splash Area is a Gaelic Horror thriller which marks the first official collaboration between maverick director George Clarke and FOG!'s Man From Hong Kong, Big Mike Leeder.  Clarke is writing, directing and acting as fight choreographer and will produce alongside John Gilmour and Leeder, wearing his Producer and Consultant hats.

Splash Area, brings killer clowns to the streets of Belfast on Halloween. Forget the trick or treaters these are the kill and beater's, as five killer clowns run amok in East Belfast, a trio of friends must wage war to save themselves and the city in a David and Goliath style battle of wits, shits, guts and giggles.

After following the lunatic comedy killers back to an old hospital, Mike, Alex and Tony are guided by curiosity to find out more. Once inside, they realize their decision was wrong and try to escape while trying to survive.

Messy, funny, sick and gore filled, Splash Area is every clown haters worst nightmare...

Unknown to most U.S. cinegeeks, Northern Ireland’s leading independent genre film-maker George Clarke and Yellow Fever Productions burst kicking and screaming onto the scene a few years back with the award winning Battle of the Bone, Northern Ireland's first and so far only kung fu zombie movie.

While most Irish themed movies might seem to focus on the ‘troubles’ between the Catholic and Protestants, Clarke decided why not have 3 friends caught in the middle between not only rival mobs from both sides but a bloody zombie outbreak! Shot on a budget that wouldn’t pay for coffee on most films, Clarke delivered an impressive first effort as a director, delivering a highly entertaining film which took home the Audience Choice Award at the 2008 Freakshow Horror Film Festival.

Clarke and his team then began work on a regular music show Lix, focusing on the thriving local music scene in Belfast as well as a series of internet shorts entitled The Kid to hone their craft and the insanely enjoyable Little Red Riding Hoodie, which pits the cross dressing Big Bad Wolf armed with an AK-47 against a Beretta wielding young hoodie!

Entering it's fourth year, the Yellow Fever Independent Film Festival  was organized by Clarke and he hopes it will become the major festival for independent genre films and documentaries in Northern Ireland. The festival has seen film-makers and guests from around the world journeying to Belfast for the festival and screenings of new films, short films, documentaries and live events.

Clarke has also launched Yellow Fever Distribution as a way to release his own films onto the DVD market in the United Kingdom, as well as many independent genre projects including the acclaimed Shadowland, Experiment 7 and the utterly bonkers gore fest that is Isle of the Damned!

Clarke's biggest exposure to date when he posted the video known as Chaplin’s Time Traveler on his YouTube channel and got close to 5 million hits in 2 weeks, and plenty of exposure on everything from the BBC, CNN, CBS to Jay Leno.  Splash Area is his fourth feature film.

Splash Area stars Anthony Boyle, Leanne Marks, Ruby Campbell, Conor Pelan, Brian Norton, John Render, Alan Crawford, Gary Whelan, Paul Gormley, Robert Render, Ed Boyd, Vivian Jamison, Thomas Smyth, Roddy Conlon, Leo Clarke, Tobyn Clarke and Frances Burscough.

Clarke & Leeder have a number of other projects in development which will be announced later in the year.

FOG! Chats With Super Geek, Author GARTH SUNDEM!

Last week, FOG! was fortunate to have a guest column from bestselling author Garth Sundem. His new book, Brain Trust: 93 Top Scientists Dish the Lab-Tested Secrets of Surfing, Dating, Dieting, Gambling, Growing Man-Eating Plants and More!, will be released tomorrow.

Garth took some time from his busy schedule to talk science and all things geeky.

Your books cover both the scientific and the fun aspects of geekery. I know your educational background is in music, math and pre-med. How did you become a writer and more specifically, how did you become interested in the subjects that you cover?

My dad's a former president of the American Accounting Association and I grew up playing with numbers -- math club, chess club (jazz band, rocket club...okay, I should stop now). We did Games Magazine cover-to-cover and rarely missed Jeopardy.

Later I spun my love of patterns into a Masters in music composition, but that was about the extent of my skill: I was a black dot pattern pusher and I always felt like a bit of a charlatan when faced with people who had music in their ears. So at age 28, basically unemployed and unemployable I spun back to math, which in turn led me back around to science.

Damn, is that eclectic enough for you?

For your new book, Brain Trust, you interviewed Nobel Laureates, MacArthur ‘geniuses’ and National Medal of Science winners. Did you go to them with specific questions, or did they individually bring their own interests and obscure knowledge to the table?

While on the phone with stats guru Wayne Winston, he was yelling at LeBron James because his model predicted a wider point spread for USA basketball.

Talking with mathematician and puzzler Ian Stewart about card tricks, he started telling me about trying to use rotational mechanics to get his malfunctioning cat to land on its feet.

Psychologist Gordon Gallup illustrated his points about gullibility by telling the story of how his mother tricked him into marriage.

You can't get this stuff from scientific abstracts. I think in this case an open mind, a willingness to digress, and fast typing skills got me much more than subject matter expertise.

As a country, the United States is falling far behind other countries in both math and science. What do you think we can do to create interest in this within our culture?

Ah hell...who knows?

I have a three and a five year old and so education is close to my heart right now. When teaching my son titrations, I hooked his ear up to a 9v battery that gave him quite a little zap if concentrations went too high or too low -- but you know, I'm not sure it did much good and the smell of burning hair was really hard to get out of the curtains.

Maybe there's another way?

Rather than testing, I think it's gotta have something to do with the joy of discovery -- framing math as solving fun puzzles and science as the process of looking out into the world and wondering.

What prompted your interest in science and what continues to drive your interest in it's theories and applications?

I think science is one of the few ways to get that *no way* factor you remember from when you were a kid -- I mean, who doesn't love robot fish that are accepted by real fish and go on to lead the school?

That's just cool. And even better is the idea that science can inform our lives -- we can date better and diet better and bet better and, in short, with enough expert advisers, live the scientifically perfect life.

There are a lot of things I'm bad at, but for every one of these things, there's a scientist who's solved it.

What scientist is criminally ignored by history?

I love Victor Frankenstein.

The fact that he's fictional shouldn't detract from his achievements -- while scientists I've talked with like Joseph Ecker and Craig Venter are only now cobbling together living creatures the size of cells, Frankenstein created a seven-foot-tall monster. Talk about visionary!

Also, I'm not sure this qualifies as science, but I've always had a massive man crush on Grigori Rasputin.

I would say Alan Turing, but I think he's too mainstream.

Have you decided on your next project, and what is it?

Yep -- I'm writing another book for Random House, tentatively titled Geekercise! I picture Bill Gates in leg warmers, but that's beside the point. The content, however, is top secret.

What are you currently geeking out over?

I'm geeking out mostly on kid stuff these days -- somehow I've completely lost the ability to transform a Transformer, though I've kept my skillz with K'Nex and Lego (likely by keeping said skillz current by building Ikea furniture, fueled by me wife's addiction). I'm also geeking out on puzzle apps like Swampy and Cut the Rope.

Of course I'm always geeking out on Science Daily headlines, which you can find me submitting to Digg, Reddit and Slashdot.

Garth's new book, Brain Trust: 93 Top Scientists Dish the Lab-Tested Secrets of Surfing, Dating, Dieting, Gambling, Growing Man-Eating Plants and More! will be released tomorrow, March 6th, 2012 and will be available from your local store or favorite e-tailer.

EPIX SEEING BLACK IN 2012
Lewis Black's In God We Rust Premieres on EPIX March 17

EPIX, the premium entertainment service available to subscribers on television, video-on-demand, online and consumer electronic devices delivers another high profile original comedy event in March as comedian Lewis Black marks his return to the premium service. The new special follows up his Grammy winning special, Stark Raving Black, which continues to be a top performing original event on EPIX.

Filmed at Minneapolis' historic State Theatre, In God We Rust features Black's inimitable comedy tirades as he jumps up and down and wags his finger at the absurdities of our lives. With topics taken from the front pages, Black leads the audience on a hilarious, cathartic journey from politics to Valentine's Day to Facebook's popular application, Farmville. "People do this, because really, everybody's always dreamed of having a fake farm," says Black.

"Lewis Black connects with our audience," said EPIX President Mark Greenberg, welcoming the return to EPIX of the bestselling author and The Daily Show contributor. "His last special continues to draw heavy viewership on the network, on demand and online. Now, as EPIX expands to Internet connected devices like Xbox, Roku and others, we are providing fans with even more ways to see him."

"I'm thrilled to be back," Lewis Black added. "I don't claim to understand the technology behind EPIX and all the platforms, but I'm thankful that they do. And I've been told by people barely out of diapers that it's actually not complicated."

In God We Rust joins a growing roster of A-list comedy events on EPIX which include "Craig Ferguson: Does This Need to be Said;" "Louis CK: Hilarious" (nominated for two 2011 Emmy awards); "Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story" (nominated for a 2010 Emmy); Lewis Black's "Stark Raving Black" (which received a Grammy nod) and shows featuring David Cross, Seth MacFarlane, Janeane Garofalo and Kevin Smith. The Sexual Mr. Limpet

The Incredible Mr. Limpet (based on a novel!) was made in 1964 and for a certain generation of television viewers, is a treasured memory.

Featuring Don Knotts as a bookkeeper named Henry Limpet who attempts to join the Navy at the beginning of the United States entry into WWII, but is rejected as being unfit for military service.

His deepest wish, though, is that he somehow be transformed into a fish.

Limpet's marriage is threatened by his mild manner and his piscaphilia, an extreme love of fish.

Magically, on a trip to Coney Island Limpet falls into the ocean and is transformed. He befriends a crab he names "Crusty" and a sexy female fish he names "Ladyfish." As a fish Limpet discovers he has incredible sonar powers, and convinces the war department that he can be useful pinpointing the locations of enemy mines and Nazi U-boat. After becoming a war hero Limpet "divorces" his wife and retires to the ocean world with Ladyfish as his mate.

Mr. Limpet
Don Knotts portrays Limpet as the perennial milquetoast in typical Knotts-ian form by way of Harold Lloyd in bookish suit and round rimmed glasses. Limpet is a man who lives more and more in his own fantasy world, with the vaguely warped wish of wanting to be a fish. His wish is wrapped up in his own feelings of physical (read as sexual) inadequacy. With WWII looming Limpet can barely tolerate his inability to join the service.

Limpet's wife Bessie (played by Carol Cooke) has a "friend" named George Stickle, (played by Jack Weston) who is accepted into the Navy, and earns her respect. Though this is ostensibly a movie for children, it is strongly implied that Limpet is being cuckolded. George Stickle is a strong male figure that dominates Limpet and calls him his "little buddy."

Though at some point there mutt have been some attraction that brought Limpet and his wife Bessie together (perhaps his bookish, smart ways lead hr to believe he was going to be a good provider financially) Limpet' fascination with the ocean world caused his marital relationship to deteriorate. Limpet began at some point to find it difficult to express himself as a man due to his feelings of inadequacy. Limpet became "limp" and could no longer perform in his role as a husband.

Of course Bessie naturally turned her affection to the earthy, potent George Stickle, whose name, Stickle connotes quick literally something tall, hard erect and virile. He is a man in every way that Limpet cannot be.
Mr. Limpet and Ladyfish

As the movie progresses a comparison can be made between Limpet and the situation of a closeted homosexual trapped in the charade of a heterosexual marriage.

As the straight lifestyle becomes too great a burden to sustain, elements of the preferred lifestyle are introduced, first as hobbies or interests. In the ace of Limpet this manifests itself as a plethora of aquariums and an active interest in the sexual habits of sea life. These interests are cultivated and presented in ways that are at first socially acceptable, but as time goes on the pretense becomes unsustainable.

As the hobbies grow in importance the attendant lifestyle moves from being socially acceptable to socially unacceptable. (Note that this story is told from the perspective of social norms in 1941 as interpreted in 1964, and may have less relevance today in light of the advances being made in LGBT rights)

In the case of Limpet this socially unacceptable behavior includes "hanging around in the pet store for hours," abstaining from seafood, and keeping a fish in the water cooler at work. despite warnings that his behavior threatens his cripple his place in normal society, Limpet does not seek to moderate his fantasies. Instead he doubles down, creating a complex fantasy world with its attendant impossible wishes such as "I wish I were a fish" as a prelude to his sexual awakening, a "coming out of the closet."
The comic adaptation

Of course this being a fantasy film Limpet's wish is not impossible at all. The wish is granted before limpet is mentally prepared. Hence, when Ladyfish first attempts to seduce him, Limpet is prevented from acting on his feelings because of his unwillingness to commit moral sin. He will not cheat on his wife, and all too "human" (read as heater) feeling.

As a human Limpet is incapable of passion, and his wife and others are all too willing to take him to task for his inadequacies.

When transformed into a fish, however, Limpet becomes confident and virile. He discovers that he has a unique undersea ability, a sort of sonar blast. When he uses this ability his entire body becomes a vertical column of blasting power. He can easily repel the most fearsome undersea predators. He takes on a fearsome shark and squid with ease. Limpet is no longer limp, he is a thick slab of pure phallic power.

Once transformed Limpet befriends a small crab he names "Crusty." Like Adam in the biblical Eden, Limpet is allowed to name all the creatures he discovers. Unlike his land based relationship with George Stickle, Limpet is the dominant personality in his relationship with Crusty. Crusty, a male, respects Limpet's virility. Limpet in turn does not repress Crusty, he even accepts help from his new friend, something George Stickle would have been loathe to do.

Limpet's most important undersea relationship is with a female fish he names "Ladyfish."

Ladyfish is not so much a character as she is a pure female sex object. Limpet saves her from a fisherman and gives her a name, and in return she immediately tries to seduce him, wantonly coiling herself around Limpet's long, phallic and virile body, caressing his new found "manhood" in a manner Limpet cannot quite handle.

As an amoral animal, there are no human considerations regulating the sexual behavior of Ladyfish. Limpet, however, falls back on his human persona, the safety of his human weakness, and demurs. It is only after he becomes a war hero, and properly divorces his wife, that he is finally able to accept his position as a free animal, powerful and amoral sovereign of his newly adopted world.
A weird and happy ending

Director Arthur Lubin is no stranger to the talking animal genre.

He directed several films in the Francis the Talking Mule series and was the producer and director of the entire run of Mr. Ed, the show about a talking horse.

Mr. Ed, like Ladyfish, has no real sense of human right and wrong, but has such ideas imposed on him by a human, in this case a character named Wilbur Post.

Following the logic of the above essay, it becomes apparent that Wilbur Post has none of Henry Limpet's problems of sexual inadequacy.  Posts are strong and virile, after all, but the "name as a clue to sexual potency" idiom breaks down here, and a post becomes merely something to tie your horse to.
