As a society, our tipping point quickly and ominously approaches.

With autonomous cars only a few years around the corner, a remaining giant question on how to address international and domestic terrorism, and no improvement on our oil-dependent lifestyles in America, some form of change will occur, and when it does, we’ll have moved into a new post-technology age.

Perceptive to this sense of a drastic change in the future to come, the master minds and creators at Humanoids have created The Tipping Point, an anthology inviting 13 international comics creators to write and draw their own adaptations and interpretations of the concept of the tipping point, the precipice of change.

The Tipping Point compiles stories from some of the most established and revered comic artists and writers. In the introduction, Fabrice Giger, the head honcho at Humanoids, describes the publisher’s commitment to combining Japanese manga, French-language bande dessinée, and American comics, and the thirteen stories appropriately blend the established styles that Humanoids advocates, creating an excellent source of inspiration for the “cross-pollination” that Giger hopes for future generations.

JERUZALEM (review)

Review by Joshua Gravel
Produced by TheGamers.TV, PAZ Brothers, Shaked Berenson
Written and Directed by Doron and Yoav Paz
Starring Yael Grobglas, Yon Tumarkin,
Danielle Jadelyn, Tom Graziani, Mel Rosenberg,
Steven Hilder Geri Gendel, Ido Di Capua,
Howard Rypp, Sarel Piterman, Yoav Koresh

While on a vacation to Tel Aviv, two twenty something American women meet an anthropology student and accept an offer to join him in Jerusalem for part of their visit. Once there, a supernatural force brings back the deceased as winged hell zombies and government officials are forced to close the walled city’s gates to combat the growing evil.

JeruZalem has a great premise and antagonist as I am partial to religious based horror movies. The acting is consistently good throughout, although the writing leads the characters to make some stupid decisions, I can overlook this however given that the film has bigger problems.

The main problem with JeruZalem is the insistence of showing all of the action through the view of our main character’s smart glasses.

There is no indication that she is ever video recording any of the events nor is it established that the glasses have a live feed back to any capture devise so the use of the glasses is simply more irritating than rational or an advancement of the plot.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS: Final Thoughts/Review

Written by Atlee Greene

Welcome to my belated review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As much as I wanted to write up a review as soon as the end credits rolled, I decided to wait. I wanted to avoid being “Phantom Menaced” and watch the film a few more times while the nostalgia subsided.

Six trips to the theater, and a much lighter wallet, gave me some clarity on the matter.

While this is not a perfect movie, the pros heavily outweigh the cons, and its execution in giving audiences that Star Wars magic is flawless.

Plenty of spoilers after the jump.

Back with his first film in 8 years, legendary Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien wowed this year's Cannes Film Festival (where he won Best Director) with his awe-inspiring THE ASSASSIN - a wondrous take on the traditional wuxia film. The story is simple, if elusive - in 9th-century China, Nie Yinniang is a young woman who was abducted in childhood from a decorated general and raised by a nun who trained her in the martial arts. After 13 years of exile, she is returned to the land of her birth as an exceptional assassin, with orders to kill her betrothed husband-to-be. She must confront her parents, her memories, and her long-repressed feelings in a choice to sacrifice the man she loves or break forever with the sacred way of the righteous assassins. Rich with shimmering, breathing texture and punctuated by brief but unforgettable bursts of action, THE ASSASSIN is a martial arts film like none made before it.

There's no doubt that the boldest and most personal fashion statement anyone can make is in one's selection of t-shirt.  Personally, I love them.  It's an opportunity to show the world what pop culture I care about, a wonderful flashback to the past and a fantastic way to initiate any nerd discussion.

For this installment of Cool Shirts, I took a look at some of the shirts from 80sTees, which was the first 80s memorabilia online store and has now become a prime destination for pop culture tribes everywhere to come together and share their geekery!

80sTees sells more than shirts.  Among their wares are socks, costumes, ugly Christmas sweaters, hoodies and more.

These are a few of my recent favorites.

He doesn't play nice with action figures."

Slamdance Festival to showcase daring
new filmmaking from four continents

Slamdance has announced its Special Screenings, Beyond, and Shorts programs for their 22nd Film Festival. The programs present bold DIY films by a variety of acclaimed and visionary filmmakers from all over the world and include 23 World, 13 North American, and 13 US Premieres. This year, several Slamdance Alumni return with strong feature presentations in the Beyond Program, including Axel Ranisch’s Alky Alky and Daniel Martinico’s Excursions. The Festival will open with a Special Screening of Adam Rifkin and Penn Jillette’s Director’s Cut, starring Missi Pyle, Penn Jillette, Harry Hamlin, Hayes MacArthur, Lin Shaye, Gilbert Gottfried, and Nestor Carbonell. Special Screenings also include sci-fi features Let's Be Evil from Martin Owen and Embers from Claire Carré, which will close the Festival.

The 2016 Oscar® Qualifying Shorts competition showcases 39 American and 32 International productions in the Narrative, Documentary, Animation, Anarchy, and Experimental sections. All Slamdance films are programmed entirely from blind submissions by the Slamdance filmmaking community.

“The Slamdance Special Screenings section this year is a mix of higher profile work, remarkable talent and a film we thought truly deserved further exposure.  Our closing night choice of Claire Carre's Embers is not a premier but so what. We're far more interested getting behind a visionary film from a woman director we are excited to support and help expand her career and audience reach,” states Special Screenings Programmer and Slamdance Co-Conspirator Paul Rachman.

Films in the Beyond program, made by emerging narrative and documentary filmmakers working beyond their first features, are eligible for the Audience Awards. Jury Awards are presented to short films in all categories and every 2016 Slamdance filmmaker is eligible for the Spirit of Slamdance Award, judged by the filmmakers themselves.

Beyond Programming Captain, Josh Mandel, elaborates, “In the Beyond section at Slamdance, narrative and documentary films share center stage. This year’s Beyond films push boundaries in story, character, and directorial vision, and ultimately bring a greater worldview into focus.”

"Slamdance democratically selects a slate of short films exclusively from blind submissions with the goal of identifying unknown short film artists comprising both skilled visionaries and raw talents. We are privileged to play a role in launching the work of such an exciting group of filmmakers from around the globe who will continue to make vital, challenging work for years to come," said Randall Good, Shorts Programmer.

The 2016 Slamdance Film Festival will take place from January 22nd - 28th, 2016 in Park City, Utah at the Treasure Mountain Inn, located at 255 Main Street, Park City, UT 84060.

The Top 5 Tabletop Games of 2015 That You Haven't Heard Of...

Written by John Teehan

I was thinking of starting off with saying something along the lines of "2015 was a great year for tabletop gaming." The problem with a statement like that is that it has been a great year for tabletop gaming for quite a while now.

I won't try tro delve into the reasons why, or the sociological implications laid therein, or how it may or may not be a backlash to isolated electronic gaming versus the more social interactive blah-blah-blah. Just accept that tabletop gaming continues to be a force reckoned with, and rightly so.

With that said, here are five tabletop games (both of the RPG and boardgame variety) that may have slipped under your radar in 2015.

The FOG! Guide To DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

Written by Jennifer Chang

With the success of The Flash and Arrow, it isn’t hard to believe that the CW will launch its third show set within the DC Universe, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which will premiere this Thursday, January 21st. The series will center on a group of heroes who are recruited to travel through time to defeat super-villain, Vandal Savage.

This year’s annual The Flash/Arrow crossover event helped establish the central theme of the new series, as well as introduce a few key characters of Legends who were new to The Flash and Arrow mythologies. Before diving head first into the reality warped, time-travel-based DC thriller, let’s quickly recap The Flash/Arrow crossover event.

Legends of Today (The Flash S02E08) / Legends of Yesterday (Arrow S04, E08)

Vandal Savage arrives in Central City looking to kill the reincarnation of Priestess Chay-Ara, Kendra Saunders, a barista at CC Jitters. After an encounter with Savage, Barry deduces that he is no meta-human, but something far greater. The Flash (Barry Allen) and the rest of Team Flash (Cisco Ramone and Caitlin Snow) travel to Star City to enlist the help of Green Arrow (Oliver  Queen) and Team Arrow (Thea Queen (Speedy), Laurel Lance (Black Canary), Felicity Smoak, and John Diggle) to protect Kendra until they can stop Savage.

The newly crowned, Ra’s Al Ghul (Malcolm Merlin) informs the two teams that Savage is an immortal and cannot be stopped. A winged man who turns out to be Carter Hall, a reincarnated Prince Khufu, then kidnaps Kendra, revealing to her that they are soul mates and have been connected for the last 4,000 years.

After Savage locates the Staff of Horus in Central City, Team Arrow and Team Flash decide to regroup in Central City, where they take shelter in a secluded farmhouse just outside the city.

With ties to all things evil, Ra’s Al Ghul manages to coordinate a meeting between Savage, Oliver and Barry. Savage demands that they turn over Kendra and Carter or he will use the Staff of Horus to destroy Central City and Star City. Barry and Oliver devise a plan to deliver Kendra and Carter as a ruse to lure the Staff of Horus away from Savage.

The plan fails; Kendra and Carter are killed and Savage uses the Staff of Horus to destroy everyone in the city. Barry manages to escape, running fast enough to travel back in time to the initial meeting between Savage, Oliver and himself. Barry informs Oliver of his time travel only to persuade him to change his approach in defeating Savage.

This time, Barry, Oliver and all members of Team Arrow are present to deliver Kendra and Carter to Savage. Barry and Oliver are able to separate Savage from the Staff and use it against him, turning him into a pile of ashes.

That were then collected and contained by Ra’s Al Ghul.

Now that we’ve done that, let’s dive deeper into the characters of DC' Legends of Tomorrow.

FOSTER (graphic novel review)

Review by Lily Fierro
Foster
Written by Brian Buccellato
Illustrated by Noel Tuazon
Published by OSSM Comics
Release Date: July 2, 2014
Price: $12.99

Truth be told, I probably never would have picked up Foster based on its cover.

Upon opening up the collection, it is evident that Foster wants to eat, breathe, and consume the 70s of Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets and James Toback’s Fingers, but the cover gives off more of a Rambo with a hint of werewolf scent.

Thankfully, the psudo-script opening written by Robert Place Napton describing or pondering on Buccellato’s origins lured me in and opened the curtain for the character of Eddie Foster and the setting of Vintage City, a future wasteland and composite of America’s major cities in the 1970s.

Buccellato’s first full-creator controlled series, Foster, exists in 6 issues that trace the first arc for Eddie Foster.

A Vietnam War veteran, Eddie struggles to re-adapt into society. We know he saw ghastly things and committed the same in Vietnam, and as a result of his sins and those of others, Eddie cannot function as a husband, father, or working man. Instead, he remains in a haze of depression and alcoholism, languishing in the ruins of his past and present.

Review by Joshua Gravel
Produced by Signe Byrge Sørensen
Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer
Featuring Adi Rukun

The Look Of Silence is Joshua Oppenheimer’s follow up to his critically acclaimed 2012 documentary, The Act Of Killing.

The first film told the story of the 1965 Indonesian Military coup and the mass slaughter of suspected communists which followed all through the words of the killers themselves who are still holding positions of power to this day.

In The Look Of Silence Oppenheimer focuses on small village optometrist, Adi, whose older brother was killed in the 1965 genocide.

We follow Adi as he researches and deals with how the 1965 genocide affected his family and as Adi actually uses the relationships Oppenheimer had built with those in power to actually confront some of the men responsible for his brother's death in person.

Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Teyonah Parris, Jennifer Hudson, Steve Harris, Harry Lennix, D.B. Sweeney, Angela Bassett, with John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson star in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq, a searing satire of gun violence in America inspired by the ancient Greek play “Lysistrata.” Touted as “the freshest film of 2015” by The Village Voice, Chi-Raq transports Aristophanes’ classic battle of the sexes to Chicago’s South Side, where the death of a child by a gang member’s stray bullet inspires a group of women to organize against the ongoing violence. From acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee, Chi-Raq is the first original feature production from Amazon Studios, which brought the world the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series “Transparent.”

Chi-Raq is a powerful and timely tale of a community at war with itself, with scathing commentary on gun culture, black-on-black violence, corrupt politicians and urban decay. Two rival gangs, led by Chi-Raq (Nick Cannon) and Cyclops (Wesley Snipes), are locked in bloody combat on the streets of Chicago, until the beautiful Lysistrata (Teyonah Parris) persuades the women of the Spartan and Trojan gangs to swear off sex with their men until the fighting stops. Featuring raw, original music by Cannon, Chi-Raq ignites a provocative dialogue on the nature of race, sex and violence in America and around the world.

Future Prospects For The Marvel Franchise

The Marvel brand has already become one of the top entertainment franchises and that looks to continue into 2016 and beyond.

From television series such as Daredevil to future blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that will undoubtedly feature their own spin-off online games, it looks like it will be another bumper year for the Marvel brand.

Daredevil was originally released as a film in 2003 and featured stars such as Ben Affleck and Colin Farrell. The movie unfortunately suffered from lukewarm reviews and was lost in the deluge of other more-successful superhero movies of the era.
