What's Already Wrong With STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Admit it.

As much of a fan you are, you're still going into Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a hell of a lot of skepticism.

Angst ridden feelings of crass disappointment from the prequel trilogy, combined with the ongoing-altered original trilogy?

A Jedi craves not these things.

I go into this new trilogy with a sense of slight bit of trust, because, after all, as fear leads to anger, yada yada yoda.

But I have a bad feeling about this because...

MOOMINS ON THE RIVIERA (review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz
Produced by Vesa Harju, Hanna Hemilä,
Sophia Jansson, Xavier Picard
Written by Leslie Stewart, Annina Enckell,
Hanna Hemilä, Xavier Picard, Beata Harju
Based upon the comic strip by Tove Jansson
Directed by Xavier Picard and Hanna Hemilä
Voiced by Nathaniel Parker, Tracy-Ann Oberman,
Russell Tovey, Stephanie Winiecki, Ruth Gibson

For a majority of Americans the world of comics and animation begins and ends with the works that are created here, forgetting that there's a treasure trove of creativity that have come from other parts of the world.

Sure, we may be familiar with Tintin and Babar, but say the word Moomin, and most people would draw a blank.

Which is probably why the story of the Moomins (a group of hippo-like creatures created originally as a comic strip in 1945 by Tove Jansson) going to the French Riviera seems, well weird.

After-all, who are these characters and why would someone want to see them getting into a series of conundrums worthy of a Griswold Family-like European Vacation?

Maybe because a lot of the rest of the world does and has for decades.

Review by Joshua Gravel
Directed by: Chris Kasick
Written by: Mike Demski
Executive Produced by: Errol Morris
Starring: Brian Posehn, Scott Adsit, Missi Pyle,
Paget Brewster, Beau Ballinger, Melia Valeriek

Spending Christmas with family can be hard, but when you are a bitter middle-aged alcoholic and are spending Christmas with your younger brother Cody’s seemingly perfect family, it may be unbearable.

Nick arrives at his Cody’s house intent on smoking and drinking his way through the holiday and hooking up with his brother’s twenty-year-old stepdaughter but over the course of the evening he realizes that everything isn’t as perfect as it seems.

As Nick narrates his holiday night via the analogy of the failed 1974 Cleveland Indians “Ten Cent Beer Night” fiasco we see that the arrival Nick and Cody’s sister and her husband appears to balance the mood of the group and just when we think that evening may take a positive turn it comes time to exchange gifts…

Uncle Nick is a darkly comic tale with an undercurrent of emotion and a mean streak that all combine to form a powerful character driven story.

In Defense of George Lucas

With Episode VII coming out, I’m going to have to shill for George Lucas.

As the years go by, people dump on him more and more for his many missteps (and he does deserves a lot of the criticism). But we’ve gotten to the point that people even call into question what, if any credit he deserves for the success of the first Star Wars film, arguing that his then-wife Marcia Lucas and the rest of the creative team were really the ones who pulled the film together.

People want to erase his involvement from the franchise altogether.

So given that we’re inevitably about to go through another cycle of Lucas bashing, it needs to be said that he is a visionary filmmaker even if he hasn’t been involved in a good movie since Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

Lucas with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford on the Last Crusade set.

FOG! Chats With Will Tracy and Gabe Koplowitz About ALLEN: SON OF HELLCOCK

I was at first skeptical to read yet another brightly colored Conan-sword-tale. With space lasers the fashion this week, this seemed like a step backward back in time to a place I didn't need to revisit.

And the creators are comedians, and we all know how those people are.

This all came to a climax when Z2 Comics forced me at dagger point to read issue one of their Allen: Son of Hellcock to prepare for an interview with their famous funny people Will Tracy (HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Onion) and Gabe Koplowitz (VH1).

I finally relented. Mead in hand, I had some questions for these guys because I was only two pages in when I realized this might be the funniest book of the year.

Will and Gabe joined us to answer our questions about the new publisher and disappointing the person that brought you into this world. Allen: Son of Hellcock debuts today in stores and digital comic shops.

An Evening at The Krampus Ball

By Gavin Hignight

A couple of years ago I was in downtown Los Angeles at the Artwalk.  It was a chilly December evening and I had a profoundly unique Holiday experience…

Walking down the street after visiting a gallery I saw a crowd stirring.  The sounds of excitement buzzed from the group along with loud clanging bells, stomping noises and horns.

Suddenly a procession of hooves, ghoulish hairy monsters, the hairiest of beasts were walking through the crowd. They were classic with a uniform quality to them and there was something very disturbing about their presence.

These were monsters in the truest sense of the word and I love monsters.

I was hooked.

This was my first exposure to the Krampus.

How, after a lifetime of loving monsters had I never heard of this amazing mythical figure?!  Coming down to punish bad children?!  I think I like this guy!!

And lets be honest if there was ever a time for Krampus it was now! It would seem the counter-culture and soon most likely the popular-culture agrees for he is back in a big way.

The beast is popping up in more and more places this year.  Of course the biggest beast news is the new film from director Michael Dougherty (of Trick 'r Treat fame) that opened this month!

Krampus getting his own Hollywood film will probably push him into mainstream consciousness.

Next year he’ll be cartoonized as a mascot for Target, he’ll get his own kids show, there will be cuteness all around him

But for now, this year, he’s still a scary, nasty force to be reckoned with.  And the people at Krampus Ball in Los Angeles know how to celebrate him! I had the pleasure to party with the Krampus last night in the Highland Park area of LA (a neighborhood still as counter-culture as Krampus), a perfect place to celebrate the holidays and prepare to punish those who have been naughty.  But don’t take my word for it… Here are some photos of the ball.

Next year, when you are sharpening your horns and getting out your best scary mask remember….

is an event that always sells out, so pre-order tickets early you ghouls!

Review by Joshua Gravel
Produced by Bryan Gaynor, Michael W. Gray,
Chadd Harbord
Written and Directed by Dan Berk, Robert Olsen
Starring Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen,
Lauren Molina, Larry Fessenden

Three college age friends at home for Christmas vacation are looking for some fun when one of them brings the other two to her vacationing uncle’s empty mansion.

After a lot of drinking and goofing around it is revealed that this isn’t an uncle’s housem but rather the house of a family the girl used to babysit for and she knew they would be on vacation.

Unfortunately, this is when a groundskeeper shows up to check on the house and in the confusion and panic one of the girls pushes him down the stairs, breaking his neck.

The girls devise a plan until they realize that the groundskeeper isn’t dead, as they believed.

A slick and good-looking film, Body, moves at a brisk pace, but unfortunately that’s about it.

JOY (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by John Davis, Megan Ellison,
Jonathan Gordon, Ken Mok, David O. Russell
Story by Annie Mumolo, David O. Russell
Written and Directed by David O. Russell
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro,
Bradley Cooper, Édgar Ramírez, Diane Ladd,
Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini

This holiday season we are presented with David O. Russell’s newest comedic, yet slightly depressing creation, Joy.

I have a sort of unconditional love for the director, so it’s hard for me to admit that this film wasn’t my favorite. While all the usual suspects (Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, to name a few) perform with excellent timing and deprecating humor, I felt the story was diminished by the fact that the typically fluid, fun yet exciting nature we’ve come to love in Russell’s films, was over-exaggerated, a bit contrived, and pretty slow.

Now, the story of Joy is actually fun and interesting.

It’s a true story about a woman who single-handedly creates a corporation from her invention of the self-wringing mop—this after taking care of her broken-hearted soap-opera obsessed mother, dealing with her ex-husband, who awkwardly lives in her basement, and juggling her father’s move in/move out situations depending on whether or not he has a girlfriend.

Joy is thwarted at every turn not only by familial dysfunction, but bad luck, and irrational circumstances that render her helpless. Her mop invention is incredibly fitting here, as she is so often the rag (of her family) that is used to clean up mess after mess without any consideration for her wants, needs, or happiness.

Watching THE WIZ LIVE! In All Its Unabashed, Lovely Blackness

I didn’t know how much I needed The Wiz Live! in my life when it premiered December 3.

I just though it looked kinda cool. Having Queen Latifah, David Alan Grier, Mary J. Blige and Ne-Yo attached to the project didn’t hurt, either.

But when a video was released of Stephanie Mills, the original Broadway show’s Dorothy, singing “Home” with newcomer Shanice Williams at a piano, I was sold.

“Sing, Shanice,” Mills said, in that familial tone of encouragement and affection that felt straight out of church.

And “Home,” with its aspirational runs and lyrics that envision a lost soul wishing for “a place where there’s love overflowing,” looks back to the liberation theology of the black church and its spirituals.

When Mills, as Aunt Em, sang the first iteration of “Home” in The Wiz Live!, I nearly put up my praise hand.

The rest of the show really didn’t disappoint, either: Grier showed off his Yale School of Drama training as a Lion whose quivering muzzle made me laugh every time; Williams sang well; Broadway ringer Elijah Kelley’s frenetic motions had me thinking Scarecrow could come apart any minute; Ne-Yo’s countrified Tin Man had strength and pathos.

Author S. HARRISON's Top 5 Superhero Movies

My love of everything superhero, like so many others, began when I was a little kid.

I still remember pinning a towel around my neck, jutting my arms out in front of me with a determined frown on my face and “flying” the two foot drop from the arm of the couch to the floor.

In my heart I never stopped flying and it makes me geekily happy to see that the hero movie biz is now a multi-billion dollar Juggernaut, Cain Marko reference totally intended.

So, I thought I’d share with you a few superhero movies that I dig very much, and we can all pin a towel around our necks and jump off the arm of the couch together.

In no particular order, I think we’ll start with…

OUR EXPANDING UNIVERSE by Alex Robinson (review)

Our Expanding Universe
Written and illustrated by Alex Robinson
Published by Top Shelf Productions
Released on December 3rd, 2015

ISBN-10: 160309377X / ISBN-13: 978-1603093774
Price: $19.99

Alex Robinson’s Our Expanding Universe may just be one of the most difficult graphic novels to review because the major components of the book succeed as individual parts but just do not quite congeal.

Generally, I always tread carefully when I see something that interweaves the history of the earth or space into what would otherwise be a work of realistic fiction.

Occasionally, it works, as seen with Richard McGuire’s Here, but more times than not, the combination of everyday life with the magnificent wonders of the universe creates a recipe for a pretentious disaster.

While Our Expanding Universe does not triumph like McGuire’s acclaimed book, it also did not cause me to recoil as I read the parallels between the expansion of the universe and the expansion of a group of three friends.

Billy, Scotty, and Brownie live in New York City and have managed to cross paths and develop a tightly knit friendship despite their contrasting temperaments and dramatically different paths in life.

In 2016, a handful of former primetime glories and favorites will return from the grave, returning to audiences with fresh storylines, a few fresh faces and another chance at life.
