A Look At DUSTY AND SWEETS McGEE: Think 'American Graffiti' With A Lot Of Heroin

Written by Generoso Fierro

A few months back, I reviewedAmerican Hot Wax, Floyd Mutrux’s failed 1978 biopic on legendary Cleveland disc jockey, Alan Freed. Though Mutrux’ film contained real life rock and roll pioneers, Chuck Berry,  Jerry Lee Lewis, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins as well as an excellent performance from Tim McIntyre as Freed, the film’s too loose narrative structure and poorly drawn characters, mixed with flat TV movie visuals killed the film’s energy, making for a pretty mess of a film. I must admit that part of my dismissive review of American Hot Wax was fueled by the film’s release during the 1950-early 1960s nostalgia craze that engulfed American theaters in the mid to late 1970s.

After the runaway success of George Lucas’ 1973 music-filled sentimental car romp through Downey, California, American Graffiti, Hollywood seemed like they couldn’t get enough slicked backed haircuts, cute teenage boys and girls, and classic rock and roll blared through car stereos, so they set out to produce as many stories from that era as they could, but what didn’t come along for the ride was the neo-realist style of Lucas’ film, which is its finest quality.

The subsequent nostalgic films after American Graffiti relied heavy on cheese and tunes but were mostly rigidly structured narratives for ABC Sunday Night Movie of the Week releases that played out like long episodes of Happy Days. As for Lucas, I often wondered: why would this gadget-obsessed USC graduate, whose feature film career began with the clean Kubrickesque science fiction visuals of THX 1138, follow up his debut with the neo-realism of American Graffiti?

The answer may lie with Floyd Mutrux’s notorious American new wave film released the same year as THX 1138: Dusty And Sweets McGee.

I write “notorious” in describing Dusty and Sweets McGee because the film’s legend has long preceded it because of Warner Brothers’ stark action of pulling it out of theaters a week after its release.

Produced by Michael C. Manuel, Ted O'Neal
Screenplay by Max Roberts
Directed by Alastair Orr
Starring Zachary Soetenga, Lindsey McKeon,
Sofia Pernas, Pierson Fode, Jamie Anderson,
Juanxo Villaverde, Laura Penuela

Five American’s vacationing in Panama hear about a fantastic waterfall in a remote jungle area but the locals warn them off, stating that no one goes there any longer due to a history of unfortunate happenings.

Even after finding stories and videos about missing hikers online they head out to the waterfall anyway.

During the day they find a beautiful wonder of nature but as the day goes on and it starts to get dark something lurks in the jungle and waits for it’s chance to pick them off one by one.

Indigenous on all technical levels is a well-made movie.

It is a wonderfully shot film with plenty of beautiful location photography in Panama.

$

Created by Robert Kirkman (“The Walking Dead”) and Dave Erickson (“Sons of Anarchy), Fear The Walking Dead was hailed as “effortlessly creepy” (People), premiered in August as the #1 show in cable history. The 2-disc sets include character bios as well as “A Look at the Series.”

Living in the same universe as “The Walking Dead”, “Fear the Walking Dead” is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in Los Angeles, a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark (Kim Dickens, Gone Girl) and English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis, Missing) have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and the dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.

The main Star Wars galaxy was much like our own Milky Way: one hundred-thousand light years across with hundreds of millions of stars. And also like ours, many of those stars had planetary systems, some habitable or otherwise useful. (Mining natural resources, for example, or hiding children from their Sith Lord fathers.) You may know them from the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, or even the new Battlefront video game.

So without further a-dewback - yes, that happened - let’s travel from the Core World of Coruscant through the most iconic Mid Rim and Outer Rim planets!

Dreaming of a White Hogwarts: Set Dressing for Christmas

Written by Little Sofi

It is not surprising that the Harry Potter movie series is often associated with the festive period by many.

Maybe this is because they are shown on TV around the holidays, or perhaps it’s because a lot of the titles had mid-November release dates.

But maybe it’s because Hogwarts just does Christmas better than everyone else.

This year I went to the London Warner Brothers Studio Tour, to see what additions had been made to the tour since my last visit a couple of years ago, and revel in all the extra magical seasonal goodies that the studio puts out especially for Christmas.

November feels a little early for me to start getting excited about Christmas (and I do, still get very excited about Christmas). But something about the Great Hall in all its festive glory really did it for me.

The instant I saw the simulated snow falling outside, I forgot about the epic hangover that was plaguing me that morning and felt just like the other excited kids running around pointing at things and squealing at their parents (or in my case, a very understanding and patient boyfriend.)

A Look at STAR WARS IMITATORS of The 70s and 80s

First off, let me say that this article marks my third anniversary writing for Forces of Geek!

When I first did my Bigfoot article back in November 2012, I thought I'd write for a year or two and then stop.  Here I am three years into it, and I still have plenty of future article ideas.  So thanks to FOG! and to everyone who enjoys reading this column!

Now, with anticipation building towards Episode VII, I thought it would be a fun time to list non-American films from the late 70s and early 80s that imitated the original 1977 Star Wars (Episode IV).

In comparison to the more famous American imitators (Battle Beyond the Stars being the most famous), these Asian and Italian ones were impressively epic and far-reaching.  And while clearly indebted to Star Wars for settings, images, and characters, most of them were pretty creative with themes and stories.

Here, then, are the relatively few but surprisingly strong Star Wars imitators from abroad.  I've written more about each of these in myClaws & Saucers guidebook, but I hope you'll find these comments and comparisons helpful:

Library of Congress Acquisition of the Archive of Ernie Kovacs & Edie Adams
Estate Guarantees Preservation and Digitization of the Entire Archive
from Television’s Original Genius & Muriel Cigar Girl

Shout! Factory and Ediad Productions today announced an agreement extending the distribution of Ernie Kovacs visual archive that aired in the 1950s and early 1960s for five years through 2020. In addition to the continued sale of existing packages of television shows, a newly amassed physical set will be released to coincide with the Centennial of Kovacs’ birth on January 23, 2019. Entire episodes of previously unseen-since-broadcast shows from the Ernie Kovacs archive will be released digitally.

It was also announced today that the Library of Congress has acquired the entire physical archive of both Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams including Kinescopes, videotapes, 16MM, Super 8 home movies and other media that provide a unique window into both the professional and personal lives of these two iconic entertainers. The intellectual property however remains with Ediad Productions. The collection will complement the Library’s existing collections of iconic humorists, including Bob Hope, Groucho Marx, Jerry Lewis, Danny Kaye, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Sid Caesar and Johnny Carson.

The Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams Collection will be available to researchers in the Library’s Motion Picture and Television Reading Room in Washington, D.C. Processing of the collection continues, but much of it is currently available to researchers.

“The immense popularity of our three Ernie Kovacs releases during the first five-year period of this partnership justified the extension of this agreement with Shout! Factory,” said Joshua Mills, President of Ediad Productions. “To that end, the Library of Congress acquisition of the Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams archive now guarantees the preservation and digitization of their work for future generations which was always Edie’s dream. As we push forward into the digital age, we will be introducing these shows to new audiences via streaming and mobile devices beginning shortly with Shout! Factory. ”

“We are delighted to continue being the home of the Ernie Kovacs Show, and we look forward to bringing more of his comic genius to fans of groundbreaking television,” said Jordan Fields, Vice President of Acquisitions at Shout! Factory.

COOL SHIRTS: A Look At T-Shirt Offerings From NerdKungFu.com!

Written by Stefan Blitz

There's no doubt that the boldest and most personal fashion statement anyone can make is in one's selection of t-shirt.  Personally, I love them.  It's an opportunity to show the world what pop culture I care about, a wonderful flashback to the past and a fantastic way to initiate any nerd discussion.

For this installment of Cool Shirts, I took a look at some of the shirts from Nerd Kung Fu, which might very well have the largest selection of pop culture t-shirts that I've ever seen.  Among their latest additions are over dozens of new designs centered on RoboCop, Karate Kid, John Wayne, Cry Baby, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Edward Scissorhands, plus new Star Trek, Batman, Superman and Star Wars designs and much more! They also carry shirts in sizes small through 7XL and the site is filled with lots of nerdy trivia on the history of t-shirts!

Nerd Kung Fu isn't satisfied carrying just a huge t-shirt selection.  They are also currently selling a wide array of posters and a number of geek-centric ephemera including coffee mugs, shot glasses, pint glasses, blankets, wallets, buttons, magnets, playing cards, hoodies and much more.

There is something for virtually any nerdcentric provocation and a one-stop shop for the holiday gift giver.

These are some of my recent favorites.

HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT (review)

Review by Dean Galanis
Written by Emmanuel Leconte, Daniel Leconte
Based on Hitchcock/Truffaut by François Truffaut
Directed by Kent Jones
Starring Alfred Hitchcock, François Truffaut

When I was working at a Barnes and Noble in Philadelphia in the early nineties, I would often get into trouble for reading whenever it got slow.

I was in charge of the mezzanine which is where the film books were located (bad idea); if it was slow, I would clean up the area, shelve books, alphabetize, generally do my job.

But once that was done, it was time to, ya know, make sure the books’ pages were in order, or something.

My manager, Rick, had a habit of catching me while I was deeply immersed in a particular book. I’d glance up, see him glaring at me, and he would say, “Get. To. Work.”

Once he was gone for at least ten minutes, I’d pick that book up again.

Certainly not the ideal manner in which to read a book (or hold down a job), but this is how I first read the wonderful – and seminal – Hitchcock/Truffaut. I’ve read it twice since, and have picked it up countless times to check a quote or reread a section after watching (or, more likely, watching for the umpteenth time) a Hitchcock film.
