New Posters For DARK KNIGHT RISES And AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Are Bleak

0
0

We now have the first official teaser poster for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (courtesy of SuperHeroHype) and the second for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

The poster for RISES is perfect, falling totally in line with the first and further supporting (if not confirming) that at some point Bane WILL break the bat.

On the other hand, I work at a movie theater now and requested the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN banner when it arrived this past Friday because I thought it would be a sweet image of Spider-Man in his new threads, web-slining. Instead we're offered a dark teaser poster that makes AMAZING look like it is trying too hard to be THE DARK KNIGHT of Spider-Man films.

Judge for yourselves, geeks!

Check out both posters in full after the jump!

And, "The Untold Story?" We just saw that story nearly exactly a decade ago! Though I love SPIDER-MAN, I'm still not sold, Sony. I'm still not sold.

I hope the next AVENGERS poster is colorful...

Lifetime Gives Greenlight to BLUE LAGOON Remake

While I may be incapable of hearing the word "lagoon" and not thinking about about a creature, Lifetime hopes that doing a remake of The Blue Lagoon will be a brilliant thing.

According to Deadline, the network is currently developing a remake of the 1980s romance/adventure. Casting has started already and the production team is looking at a February start for filming in Puerto Rico.

If you happened to have missed the original it's a story loosely based around the story of Adam and Eve. The well known version of the film, starring Brooke Shields, is actually the second version of the story. It was first made into a movie in 1949 and was adapted from a novel by Henry De Vere Stacpoole.

The basic storyline is two kids are trapped on a tropical island and grow up together. They fall in love and "discover sexuality."

The Lifetime version of the film will likely not stray far from the original but will happen in contemporary times with new young actors. It was first set up in 2004 but has obviously spent some time on the shelf.

Storyline Entertainment's Neil Meron and Craig Zadan are set to produce with Judith Verno's Peace Out Productions. Zadan and Meron are also producing the reboot of Steel Magnolia with an all-black cast. They are also exec producing the series Drop Dead Diva and Smash.

The Sequel to DRIVE(The Book) Is Coming In April

James Sallis, the author of Drive has a sequel to his hit novel coming out in April, it's simply called Driven.

In an email to Lit Reactor writer Keith Rawson, Sallis replied to a congratulatory email with a short and simple note "Guess you heard that Driven will be out in April." If it's a hit like the first, maybe Nicolas Refn and Ryan Gosling will return to make the film.

While it's been known that Sallis was working on a sequel, a release date or any information about the book has been kept secret. Until now, publisher Poisoned Pen Press gave the very brief synopsis for the novel which is : "Six years later - Phoenix. Out of nowhere someone wants Driver dead. Who? Why? Big mistake..."

Drive started as just a slight manuscript at small time published Poisoned Pen Press with no contract involved. Now it's the publishers claim to fame.

Owners Barbara Peters and Robert Rosenwald clearly note that "After the extraordinary success of Drive and with no contractual obligation to Poisoned Pen Press, Vicky and Jim easily could have sold Driven to virtually any mainstream publishing house for significant money." According to them it was Sallis' integrity that kept him from going anywhere else.

Here's the full rough draft for the cover, keep in mind this is not the final work.

Learning from Movies: Dude, Where's My Car?

0
0

Okay, I admit it. I have a weakness for dumb stoner comedies.

Even completely straight and sober, I laugh at movies like Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, How High, and Half-Baked.

Released in 2000 to miserable reviews (18% on Rotten Tomatoes), Dude, Where’s My Car? didn’t interest even me...but one day I needed some cheering up and it was OnDemand.

I gave it a shot, and it joined my list of favorite stupid pot comedies.

What you can learn from two stoners, their girlfriends, cultists, jocks, hot alien chicks, a transsexual stripper, and a pot smoking dog after the break.

  • Sometimes it helps to return to the state of mind you were in when you lost what you’re looking for, unless that state of mind was black-out hammered.
  • On the other hand, asking your stoner friends for help isn’t a better idea.
  • If you lose your memory, check your pockets. Everything you need to retrace your steps is there.
  • No “and then!”
  • If a desirable person offers you oral pleasure in exchange for something, make sure you get the pleasure first.

  • Remember your alter identity. Don’t confuse it with your room-mate’s alter ego.
  • When teaching blind kids how to play T-ball, make sure to turn off your phone and/or beeper.
  • Don’t be scared of cultists who meet in their leader’s parent’s barn. If he can’t afford his own place, or his own car, just humor them and walk away.

  • On the other hand, sometimes the geeky people really are picking up interstellar transmissions, and get invited to parties in the Crab Nebula.
  • In France, ostrich poaching is a very serious, and very weird, crime.
  • If you don’t know what the Continuum Transfunctioner looks like, how do you know it’s not in your pockets? Or your locker at the putt-putt golf course?
  • Don’t go down in history as the guy who destroyed the universe.
  • “Special treat” is not girlfriend-speak for sex, except when it is.

Love, and needing to move your bowels, can feel a lot alike.

STEPHEN DALDRY Wants To Make A KAVALIER & CLAY HBO Miniseries

0
0

Director Stephen Daldry has long been attached to a Kavalier & Clay project, and now he says he wants it to be an eight-part mini-series at HBO.

In an interview with Collider, Daldry talked about his desire to create a TV project for the Michael Chabon novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. The story is about "two Jewish cousins who collaborate during World War II and create the comic book. Not just "a" comic book, but the entire concept of the comic book.

Early after it's publication in 2000, Scott Rudin started on a film adaptation. Names like Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield were all rumored to be attached. The film clearly went nowhere.

Daldry was also in that list of attached names as the director, and still very interested in the project he is now seeing it going a different direction. As a series he says the story will be "so much better" than if it were a film.

The dense story spans many different settings and can be complex if you really want to analyze it, I'm an English major I have to analyze everything I read. Telling the story in a film would leave out a lot and likely make some fans angry, just like every novel adaptation.

While Daldry and Chabon are close and have worked together, it is Paramount that has the rights to the title.

If you haven't checked out the book in the 10 years that it's been out, you should do that right now, it's really quite good. NYT writer says Chabon writes "like a magical spider, effortlessly spinning out elaborate webs of words that ensnare the reader."

THE PULL LIST - AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #675, ACTION COMICS #4, HEART #2 & MORE!

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Amazing Spider-Man # 675 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Dan Slott
Art: Giuseppe Camuncoli
Colors: Frank D’Armata
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

The Vulture has found some angst-filled teenagers to do his filthy deeds for him while Carlie will labor with Spider-Man, but wants zilch from Peter Parker.

The new dynamic to their relationship is interesting and entertaining with a couple of teases that make you wonder if Carlie still has feelings for Peter.

Her character is becoming more important than ever before which is a sign that she is sticking around for a while. Vulture’s run in the Punisher comics was well done and he is devious to the extreme even though his story arc is wrapped up in this issue. It takes a little getting used to the more muscular appearance of Camuncoli’s Spider-Man, but it’s nothing to complain about. The color tone was appropriate for the story Slott was telling and overall the artwork was well done. There is one page layout during the battle scene where Vulture uses one of new abilities to throw a water tower at Carlie and it looks as if she was hit right in the head, but it turns out Spidey made a razor thin rescue on the next page.

Dan Slott’s streak continues with another fantastic outing.

Detective Comics #4
Writer: Tony S Daniel
Art: Tony S Daniel
Colors: Tomeu Morey
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

It takes incredible skill and talent to write and draw your own comic book in the fashion that Tony S. Daniel has done so far with Detective Comics.

It’s only a matter of time before his writing is mentioned in the same breath as Geoff Johns, Joe Hill and Ed Brubaker by fanboys.

He really gets Batman more than most and draws him in a way that makes me think, “Now, this is the Dark Knight”. The page layouts are fantastic and portrayed intense action. This twisted and terrifying adaptation of Gotham City makes you wonder if it’s even worth saving. The Dollmaker is a horrifying villain who has made an indelible impression with the caped crusader. The Joker’s face, which was cut off by the Dollmaker in the first issue, becomes a point of interest and one of Batman’s most popular foes plays his hand in this wicked game of puppet master.

Grade: B+

Heart #2
Writer: Blair Butler
Art: Kevin Mellon
Letters: Crank!
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $2.99

Oren “Rooster” Redmond has tasted the fight life and he never wants to go back to the 9-5 grind ever again.

The second installment of this mixed martial arts tale chronicles Redmond’s journey from amateur to professional fighter.

We meet the entire cast of characters at the gym where he works out at and they all have their own little story. The life of a professional MMA fighter is brutal as the training is some of the hardest in all of sports. It’s something you need to be 100% committed to in order to be successful. Redmond doesn’t want to be another weekend warrior or some guy who likes wearing skin tight Tap Out shirts. He wants to be a world champion and he is going to enjoy the ride. We discover how Oren got the nickname “Rooster” and we see him in his first professional bout.

If you watch G4 you know Blair Butler is a huge fight fan. Speaking as someone who has dabbled with MMA training, Butler’s approach is pretty authentic and her insight shows in her writing. It was a smart move to only make this series a limited run. That’s not a knock at all. The story has the potential to become redundant since it lacks a little of that comic element that fans long for.

Anyone who is a fan of MMA or looking for something different on Wednesdays will not be disappointed.

Grade: B

Action Comics #4
Writer: Grant Morrison
Art: Rags Morales, Rick Bryant & Sean Parsons
Publisher: DC Comics
Backstory Written by Sholly Fisch / Art by Brad Walker
Price: $2.99

It’s The Man of Steel vs. The Man of Steel as Metallo’s new origin story is taking in an issue that left me a little underwhelmed.

Superman’s first real adversity has taken an interesting turn because he is handling it as young adult who goes all in without thinking unlike in the old universe where he always had a solid game plan.

As good as this issue is, I was a little disengaged at times. Superman’s shirt went from light blue to completely white as the story went on and I could not tell if that was by design. There is a lot of green energy emanating from Metallo but it doesn’t appear to be Kryptonite so it was a little confusing. Lex Luthor has gone from the greatest criminal mind of our time to the cowardly lion.

Again, I know it’s a new universe but how anyone can take this incarnation of the character seriously?

The art and color is on par with what was displayed in the last issue. We also see the debut of John Henry Irons as Steel which may lead to his own comic book series. Grant Morrison provides a great pace to the story and blends everything together very nicely despite lots of different things going on at once.

Less is more most of the time but in Grant Morrison’s storytelling it appears to be the exception to the rule.

Grade: B+

The Punisher #6
Writer: Greg Rucka
Art: Matthew Clark & Matthew Southworth
Colors: Matt Hollingsworth
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

If you always wanted to see Frank Castle doing what he does best in white snow camouflage, this is the issue for you.

The Punisher is as ruthless as ever and no one is spared, not even animals.

Frank Castle discovers the location of a meeting being held by members of the Exchange and…..well, you know. This current character arc appears one where he to be not only killing the guilty but killing anyone mildly associated with the guilty. Certainly, it will be interesting to see where is goes.

No complaints with the art and colors and the overall story was well done but nothing major occurred as this was set up issue for something larger coming down the pipe.

Grade: B

Jurassic Park: Dangerous Games #4 (Shelf-Listed: Disappointment of the Week)
Writer: Erik Bear & Greg Bear
Art: Jorge Jimenez
Colors: Studio C-10
Publisher: IDW
Price: $3.99

This month’s chapter was a slight improvement from the last issue of this series which was one of the worst comic books I have ever read.

Agent Espinoza and Dr. White find their way off the island with her pack of trained raptors and infiltrate the hideout of drug kingpin, Cazares.

I know I’m supposed to suspend reality when reading comics but I can’t get behind everyone seeming to use dinosaurs for their own personal use. The only good thing about this book came at the last page where Cazares corners Espinoza with a dinosaur that he is controlling with what looks like a Tyco remote control with extended antenna. It’s a funny visual but not enough to spend $3.99 on.

The artwork is very inorganic and the anime application brought to this series has no life or personality, which is how this entire series has been.

Marvel Has Eyes On Directors For THOR 2

Marvel Studios is currently looking at two possible directors for the sequel to the Norse God documentary.

According to THR, the studio is looking at Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan to replace the recently departing Patty Jenkins. Both are big cable show directors working for series like Game of Thrones, True Blood, The Sopranos, Grey's Anatomy, and more.

Jenkins exited the project last week just when Marvel was working to find a writer for the project. Still searching for a writer, there is a script from Don Payne, but a new shortlist of writers includes John Collee(Master and Commander), Robert Rodat(Falling Skies), and Roger Avary(Pulp Fiction).

Jenkins would have been the first female director of any superhero or comic book movie. She left the project with the now standard creative differences excuse.

The sequel is set for a November 15, 2013 release.

JUSTIN BIEBER TALKS TO DADS

hilarious image by Vanity Fair
Hey Dads of the world,

Wishing your teen daughter didn't pepper her room with posters of the "Bieb" or scream out his name in the middle of the night in what could only be from the climax of a nocturnal sex dream?

Chillax there hater, it could be worse.

Your whore of an offspring could be screaming out the name of the neighbor boy who is actually banging her or making a suicide pact with her best tween friend on who will entrap the "Bieb" into a paternity suit.

Loving the "Bieb" is all good.

But why listen to me when the boy of the hour is willing to talk Mano-a-mano to you after the break while shilling his perfume.

Trust me, he knows what he is talking about.

Star Trek: The No True Scotsman Fallacy

0

I was struck by the following comment made by Keith Badowski in his review of the second Star Trek novel, Spock Must Die!

I found Blish’s dialogue for Scotty to be a fairly elaborate depiction of a Scottish brogue. Apparently Blish took greater pains to be accurate with brogue than even James Doohan.
This was a pretty interesting observation, I thought, so I went to the novel and outlined those parts of it where Scotty, the Enterprise's erstwhile engineer, speaks.

James Blish was an American author who moved to England during the latter part of his life, so it should come as no surprise that his attempts to bring Scotty's speech patterns to life would be more accurate, if also more pronounced versions of a Scottish brogue. James Doohan, who played Scotty, always kept the accent light and mostly understandable to an American audience.

James Blish

On page 103, Scotty says, in response to something Kirk asks, "Sair good for ye" which is Scottish slang for "Good for you." To someone reading this in America, it might be hard to detect Scotty's meaning, and even more hard to detect the sarcasm behind the meaning.

But it's even more complicated than that. To convey Scotty's accent, Blish resorts to phonetic spellings of Scotty's words. "Now" becomes "noo" and "little" becomes "leetle." Instead of saying "I don't know" Scotty will say "I dinna ken."

James Doohan as "Scotty"

Scottish slang words are inserted into Scotty's dialog willy nilly. Instead of saying that a problem vexes his, Scotty uses the word "fashes." Instead of saying something is "great" Scotty uses the word "mickle." At one point Scotty goes so far as to exclaim, exclaim "Hoot mon!" Under Blish, Scotty's accent and word choice could sometimes border on the comical, reminding one more of Groundskeeper Willie from The Simpsons than a true Scotsman.

Groundskeeper Willie
James Doohan kept it subtle, giving the audience the flavor of a Scotsman without the confusion of Scottish slang. Blish was trying to inject a little more Scot into Scotty, perhaps on the belief that no true Scotsman would speak the way Doohan portrays him. Fortunately, as Keith Badowski pointed out when he noticed Blish's tampering,
Thankfully though, most Trek novelists emulate Doohan and keep it simple.

IT ISN'T THE HOLIDAYS UNTIL CHEWBACCA SINGS 'SILENT NIGHT'

0
0

This YouTube video has been out for three years and you've probably already seen it (hell, I've probably posted it before) but that doesn't make it any less of a classic does it?

Like TBS running A Christmas Story for twenty-four hours on Xmas eve, Chewy singing Silent Night gets me in the holiday spirit like little else (except for egg nog....mmmm....egg nog).

It's simple, effective and less painful than listening to Yoko Ono's screeching in Happy Christmas (War is Over)-which is a great song but when she starts warbling in the background, it's like nails on a chalkboard.

Festive merriment after the break.

Behind The Scenes Pics From THE MASTER

Paul Thomas Anderson's (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood) next film The Master is one of the most anticipated films of 2012/2013.

The Master takes place in the 1950's and follows a drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls under the spell of a charismatic leader (The Master, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) of a new religious belief system called The Cause, who's gaining a highly growing and devoted following. The drifter also takes a liking to The Master's daughter (Amy Adams).

It's been rumored that The Master is based loosely on the beginnings of Scientology and it's creator L. Ron Hubbard, since there are some distinct parallels between the story of The Master and the founding of Scientology, but Anderson and all involved with the film deny that theory.

Blackbook (via The Playlist) have some images that photographer Jack Erling took of some extras behind the scenes of the production. The images reveal our first look at the awesome detail of the period clothing.

Check out all the images after the break.

This is a place tainted by abuse, suffering and death… and the ghosts of its dark and violent past are out for revenge. That’s the setting for Bedlam: Season One, the show TV Guide called “Melrose Place-meets-Sixth Sense” and “legitimately creepy.”

In Bedlam, a modern take on the classic haunted house story, Kate (Charlotte Salt, The Tudors) and her father, Warren (Hugo Speer, Skins), have inherited Bedlam Heights and are in the process of renovating the building and, hopefully, their family’s legacy as well by turning the old asylum into luxury apartments. Kate is tasked with selling the apartments, and even lives in one herself along with roommates Ryan (Will Young, Skins) and Molly (Ashley Madekwe, Secret Diary of a Call Girl).

There’s tension around the apartment – both the sexual and the out-of-work-roommate kinds. And that tension doesn’t improve when Kate’s adopted cousin Jed (Theo James, Downton Abbey) unexpectedly arrives on the scene. With a checkered past and mental health issues, Jed’s a troubled man who sees ghosts and visions of the past - and now he’s getting mysterious text messages telling him to “Save Kate.” Gradually Jed uncovers the terrifying secrets held in Bedlam Heights, while trying to retain his sanity. He’s convinced Kate is in danger from the spooks of Bedlam Heights, but unbeknown to him, the truth will be far more terrifying…

And we're giving away two copies!

To enter, please send an email with the subject header "BEDLAM" to geekcontest @ gmail dot com and answer the following question:

Ashley Madekwe who plays Molly Lucas on Bedlam currently stars opposite Emily VanCamp on this ABC television series?

Please include your name and address (U.S. Residents only. You must be 18 years old).

Only one entry per person and a winner will be chosen at random.

Contest ends at 11:59 PM EST on January 8th, 2012.

FX Picks Up Late Night Show With RUSSELL BRAND

Russell Brand may just be the next late night host if all goes according to plan at FX.

In a press release from the network, it was announced that a deal has closed between the actor and the network to create six half-hour shows of an unscripted series. Set to debut in the spring of 2012, the show is untitled at the moment.

FX wants to give Brand's "unvarnished, unfiltered take on current event's politics and pop culture." The format sounds similar to his earlier show Russell Brand's Ponderland in that it will be taped in front of a live audience and focus heavily on interaction with that audience.

Nick Grad, exec VP, original programming said "we're very excited to add Russell Brand's bracingly funny, original, and honest voice to the FX comedy line-up."

Of course Brand had to comment on the news in his own special way saying, “I am so excited I’m on the point of climax, in fact I will put the “O” into FX, which spells FOX, which is actually the channel’s real name.” Brand added, “That’s the only thing that worries me about all this to be honest. At least I’ll be able to have a Christmas drink with Bill O’Reilly.”

Brand is well known for his roles in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Tempest. He got his start doing stand up in the UK creating a name for himself with his controversial jokes and scandalous actions.

The full press release is as follows:
LOS ANGELES, December 15, 2011 – FX has closed a deal with acclaimed actor/comedian Russell Brand for six half-hour installments of an unscripted late night series (untitled), which will debut in the spring of 2012, announced Nick Grad, Executive Vice President, Original Programming, FX.

These will feature Brand’s unvarnished, unfiltered take on current events, politics and pop culture. The six installments will be shot in front of a live audience and the format will draw heavily on interaction with that audience.

FX’s acclaimed animated series Archer returns for its third season starting January 19th and will air Thursdays at 10 PM ET/PT. Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy that revolves around the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISISS) and the lives of its employees. Although their work of espionage, reconnaissance missions, wiretapping and undercover surveillance is daunting and dangerous, every covert operation and global crisis is actually just another excuse for the ISIS staff to undermine, sabotage and betray each other for personal gain.

The series features the voices of H. Jon Benjamin as the highly skilled and incredibly vain master spy ‘Sterling Archer’; Aisha Tyler as Archer’s fellow agent and ex-girlfriend ‘Lana Kane’; Jessica Walter as Archer’s domineering mother and the director of ISIS, ‘Malory Archer’; Chris Parnell as the easily intimidated comptroller-turned-ISIS-agent ‘Cyril Figgis’; Judy Greer as Malory’s loquacious secretary, ‘Cheryl Tunt’; Amber Nash as the discordant director of human resources for ISIS, ‘Pam Poovey’; Adam Reed as the gay voice of reason at ISIS, ‘Ray Gillette’; Lucky Yates as ISIS’s possibly mad scientist, ‘Krieger’; and George Coe as Archer’s elderly and always exploited butler, ‘Woodhouse.’ Archer premieres Thursday, Jan. 19 at 10PM ET/PT only on FX.
