Win Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Film CRUMBS on DVD!

$

Set against the background of spectacular, wild and desolate Ethiopian landscapes, CRUMBS introduces audiences to a strange-looking scrap collector, Gagano (played by the charismatic Daniel Tadesse). Alternately gripped by daydreams and constant fears, the diminutive Gagano has had enough of collecting the priceless crumbs of decayed civilization - Teenage Mutant Ninja amulets, toy ray guns and Superman costumes -- including the most valuable: merchandise from Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan. Meanwhile, his true love, Birdy (Selam Tesfaye) pines for him in the abandoned bowling alley they've colonized. When a spaceship that has been hovering high in the sky for years starts showing signs of activity, Gagano has to overcome his fears - as well as a witch, Santa Claus and second-generation Nazis -- to discover things aren't quite the way he thought.

A post-apocalyptic, surrealist science-fiction romance from Ethiopia is not something one comes across every day, so to celebrate this momentous event, we're giving away three copies of this award winning festival favorite!

And thanks to our friends as IndiePix Films, we're giving away three copies!

Welcome To GUNDAM Country

Although hugely mainstream in Japan.  Gundam still seems to be something of a cult following in the USA.

With Anime culture as large as it is, Gundam has never really risen to the surface of American fandom.  For those of you like myself who love the giant robot, or mobile suit saga.  This article is for you!

And for those who might not be into Gundam, a visit to Gundam: Front and Diver City may just win you over.

A few years back, photos started circulating over the internet of a large “scale” Gundam located in Tokyo at a place called Diver City.

Well, my Earth Federation friends… I went and saw and the legends are true.

Flashback to The Speculation Boom and The Great Comic Book Crash of 1993

$

0

I was in a local comic book shop the other day, wandering the aisles, when the end of Roy Batty’s famous speech from Blade Runner (actually, improvised by Rutger Hauer) popped into my head:

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears... in... rain. Time to die.

There was a time in comics during the 1990s where, if you can believe it, the medium was actually bigger than it is now. I’ve seen comic book writers with agents, artists who were getting paid ridiculous money, and comic books being celebrated as the next big investment.

Sure, there wasn’t as many movies then, and the ones that did pop up weren’t The Avengers or the Dark Knight trilogy, but my god. comics were HUGE.

It seemed everywhere you looked there was a cartoon, action figure, comic book shelf, or poster with Wolverine on it.

Practically anyone in the industry had their own publishing house, new characters were bursting on to the scene on a monthly basis, and the money flowed like water.

Kids all over wanted to be comic book creators and everyone thought they had the next big idea.

So this week, I think my article will be on the Big Comic Book Boom and Comic Book Crash of 1993.

You may ask how comics were such a huge thing at a time with far more limitations at the visibility of an intellectual property. We didn’t have the internet and, as I said before, the huge blockbuster movies weren’t a thing.

In response, I think that this boom and crash can really be attributed to two things: the collector’s market and the distribution system.

FOG! Goes To STAN LEE'S COMIKAZE EXPO!

Written by Lily and Generoso Fierro

NOTE: This article will refer to “comic books” as “comicbooks,” per Stan Lee’s preferred nomenclature that he described in the Legends Of Comics Panel at Comikaze 2015.

From the works we review, it is probably readily apparent that we do not focus too heavily on the DC and the Marvel Universes of comicbooks and media. This in no way means that we’re not interested in them; in fact, the recent reboot of Marvel’s Hawkeye spurred Lily’s fascination with comics, and Generoso worshiped Captain America and Spider-Man as a boy.

Consequently, when we attended Stan Lee’s Comikaze over the weekend, we had a constant internal struggle between our love for major pop culture and our devotion to the independent and the underground.

Previously, when we attended Long Beach Comic Con 2015, we focused most of our coverage on the independent voices of Artist Alley. With the lineup of Comikaze offering plenty of educational panels, a vast Artist Alley, and a main stage that featured discussions with some of the major players in entertainment and geekdom, a battle between our fascination with both the popular and the esoteric swelled, and we tried our best to satisfy both parties over the course of three days.

Missed me?  More stuff coming this week, but for now check out some big popcorn movies, a few fantastic tv series, and several of this year's sleeper films (Dope, Me & Earl & The Dying Girl).  Plus lots more.

Fire up that queue and prep that shopping, it's that time of the week.

San Andreas

Warner Bros./ Released 10/13/15

After the infamous San Andreas Fault gives, triggering a magnitude 9-plus earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter (Alexandra Daddario). But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over...it's just getting started. Extras include commentary, deleted scenes, gag reel, stunt reel, and featurettes.

Last Word:San Andreas. Loved it. Full disclosure: I love disaster films. Climate change, volcanoes, tornados, the earth’s core, meteors, all of it. And now we have earthquakes! So suped.

Every trope and predictable sequence that make up natural disaster films is present and executed perfectly: an opening crisis followed by a scientific explanation of the movie’s featured disaster (in this case, earthquakes), a broken family, sad dad, doe eyed mom and daughter, and a doofy love interest with a little brother, all of whom fit cliché after cliché while spewing corny lines from a near non-existent script. And let’s revel in the glory that they are constantly running away from cracks, crevices and falling buildings that lead to everyone else’s demise but them. Message: never follow the hoi polloi.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays Ray, a divorced and melancholy rescue pilot – he was previously a military rescuer, which explains his wild helicopter expertise. Oddly, Mr. Johnson has the smallest role, but of course, the biggest biceps. He’s not the oh-so-intelligent and witty leader that Dennis Quaid or Pierce Brosnan is in Day After Tomorrow and Volcano, but he’s satisfyingly heroic and wears a furrowed brow with utmost dedication.

The mission of San Andreas is for The Rock to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco, his ex-wife in tow, in order to save his daughter from what will be the worst earthquake in history. Ray’s capable and breast-y daughter, Blake (Alexandra Daddario), is accompanied by her just-met-you-love-interest, Ben (Hugo Johnstone-Burt), and his charming younger brother, Ollie (Art Parkinson). They all meet just as California is imploding on itself. Of course the damsel is in distress and I just couldn’t help myself—I not-so-quietly exclaimed, “the British are coming!”

Joy. Pure empty-minded joy. Note, these performances aren’t good at all. There are occasional funny one-liners. But the focus of the film is to show the creativity of CGI creators and their ability to depict city destruction on the big screen. And as San Andreas is the first earthquake movie, I was excited to see what special effects it had to offer. Didn’t disappoint. I was actually quite impressed by the birds-eye shots of waving city grounds and collapsing buildings. Super unsettling.

Kudos to the team who choreographed the spectacular implosion of city after city.  I must mention Paul Giamatti, the distressed and knowledgeable seismologist conveniently discovers he can predict earthquakes just as the worst one in history arises. His performance definitely trumps Dennis Quaid’s (Day After Tomorrow) role as a scientist. And while he doesn’t have Pierce Brosnan’s (Dante’s Peak) charm, Tommy Lee Jones’ (Volcano) wit, or Bruce Willis’ (Armageddon) ferocity, he’s delightfully frantic and disheveled, perhaps as the ignored intellectual of these films probably should be.

Now, don’t be naïve and expect a “good movie”. To my fellow disaster-loving moviegoers, enjoy the silly ride. Remember, these movies are empty-minded funfests. But that’s only if you have a thing for natural disaster epics. So don’t go in expecting stellar performances or a heightened sophistication of the genre. Same rules apply to romantic comedies or horror films. You’ve got to enjoy the formula.

San Andreas is a fun action-adventure movie that’s on par with Day After Tomorrow and Dante’s Peak (with superior special effects) and most definitely above The Core and 2012. Obviously, all are good drinking games when played on repeat on FX. Enjoy the simplicity and ridiculous destruction. I certainly did. (– Caitlyn Thompson)

Me & Earl & The Dying Girl

20th Century Fox / Released 10/6/15

Proving that the power of true friendship knows no bounds, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a uniquely funny, uplifting tale that will steal your heart and leave you laughing! Meet Greg Gaines, a quirky teenager trying to coast through high school while making hilariously mediocre film parodies with his "coworker" Earl. But when he is forced to spend time with a terminally ill classmate at the request of his meddling mother, Greg embarks on his most ambitious project yet: to let his guard down and connect with those around him in ways he never imagined. Extras include commentary, featurettes, gallery and conversation between director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and Martin Scorsese.
Last Word: A truly touching and emotionally resonant film, Me & Earl & The Dying Girl only stumbles when it dangerously tries to too hard to be quirky and irreverent.  Fortunately, it's honesty, genuine charm and inspired take on the teen cancer genre make it one of the year's best.

High school senior Greg Gaines has struggled most of his life to stay under the radar, never committing to any single social group. His only friend (who he calls his co-worker) since childhood is Earl.

Earl has spent much of his life growing up in the Gaines household, where he and Greg are introduced to films, foods and other ephemera via Mr. Gaines.  Together, Greg and Earl make short parody films, often based on art house films which look very similar to the work of Wes Anderson's Max Fisher character in Rushmore mashed up with the sweded films of Be Kind Rewind.

Greg's mother asks him to spend some time with classmate, Rachel Kushner, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.  The two become close and Greg for the first time, strives not to be invisible to this one person, having let someone in for the first time in his life. I honestly don't want to go further into the plot, but director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and screenwriter Jesse Andrews (adapting his own book), do craft a film with some real emotions and fantastic performances.  My own mother battled cancer this past year and seeing Rachel's struggle with both being sick and the side-effects of the chemo triggered an emotional sense memory for me while watching it. Olivia Cooke delivers a raw, honest and memorable performance. Me & Earl & The Dying Girl is a sweet, funny smart and sad film about friendship, life, death and growing up. Highly recommended.

A Look at Howard Chaykin's Dystopian, Futuristic Noir AMERICAN FLAGG!

$

By Lily Fierro

As seen by my great affection for Satellite Sam, I really enjoy Howard Chaykin’s work, perhaps a little more than I should. Thus, it is of no surprise that American Flagg!: Hard Times from 1985 forced me to stop my digging as I flipped past collections of Bill Griffith’s Zippy and Will Eisner’s The Spirit on the Comikaze exhibition floor.

Chaykin’s male protagonists and femme fatales (or really any peripheral female character in general) fit the idealized form for both genders. They are figures inherently from the past in that they really no longer exist. The women are almost always voluptuous and clad to emphasize their curves; they have the proportions of Jayne Mansfield and the sultriness of Marilyn Monroe or Barbara Stanwyck, with much of their words loaded with double entendre. As for the other part of the Chaykin gender equation, the protagonist men are rugged with square jawlines and shoulders; they have somewhat charmingly naive faces and ever so slightly sinister smirks to remind you that they have more than just brawn; Chaykin’s male protagonists are the Guy Madisons, Rock Hudsons, and Gary Coopers of comics.

The villains, on the other hand, deviate far from the ideal images of the male protagonists and the women. They are overly thin or portly. They are too short. They are balding. They are unkempt.

But, despite the visual contrast between the protagonists and the antagonists, the characters in Chaykin’s work tend to all be quite flawed and somewhat rotten, and such is the case with the cast in American Flagg!

TIME AFTER TIME: A Bright Spot in An Otherwise Disappointing 1979 For MALCOLM McDOWELL

Written by Generoso Fierro

In between his brilliant feature film debut in Lindsay Anderson’s prophetic 1968 counterculture film If and his current job making Lunchables commercials, the wheels came off the career of legendary English actor Malcolm McDowell.

During the late 1970s, with his career booming off of critical and commercial successes such as Lindsay Anderson’s O Lucky Man, which Malcolm starred in and co-wrote the screenplay, to portraying Captain Flashman in Richard Lester’s 1975 hit Royal Flash to his most famed role as Little Alex in Kubrick’s adaptation of Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange, it seemed that nothing could unseat him from being regarded as one of the great young talents in British cinema.

That is until 1979, when Malcolm appeared in three films, two of which saw small popularity and decent press and one film which saw international headlines but for all the wrong reasons: the Tinto Brass directed and Bob Guccione produced hardcore porn Roman epic, Caligula.

The Holidays are fast approaching and you all know what that means, right?

Yep. Seasonal Depression!

Don’t worry. I’m not about to make light of mental illness. I would never do that. I have too many very good friends who suffer from varying degrees of these illnesses to do that.

What I will do, though, is introduce you to two documentaries about mentally ill individuals that are made by filmmakers who knew them very well.

These films do not end well.

They are sad.

They are HIGHLY depressing.

And they are all too true.

The Road To Episode VII: International Trailer, First Commercial, REBELS S02E06, VADER DOWN & Daniel Fleetwood, RIP

$

Holy spoilers, Batman! Lucasfilm released the new international trailer, and the first of what is reported to be three TV spots, for The Force Awakens.

These trailers came completely out of nowhere. I didn’t want to watch them, but I have no self-control when it comes to Star Wars.

The international trailer was in many ways completely different from the North American version as it seem more focused on action than story. Kylo Ren holding his lightsaber near Rey’s head in the woods was one of those “Whoa” moments that I can’t believe J.J. Abrams allowed to be seen before the premiere of the film.

The TV spot was a collection of quick action scenes that again made me wish I hadn’t visited YouTube even though the end result left me with a big smile on my face. The Millennium Falcon bursting through a cluster of snowcapped trees was the money shot that should look amazing on the silver screen.

Lupita Nyong'o’s Maz Kanata stole the 31-second show with her “I’ve seen your eyes. I know your eyes.” dialog.

Its cryptic double meaning is alluding to shared destinies of the film’s characters and fans came off in such a profound manner that I couldn’t believe this was Star Wars, while simultaneously feeling that this is truly Star Wars.

Rebels Report: S02E6: “Wings of the Master”

This Hera-focused episode provided viewers with an opportunity to see what makes the Ghost’s ace pilot so motivated to help those in need throughout the galaxy. It’s rare to see the Twi'lek in the spotlight considering that Kanan trusts her immensely and she is often the one who formulates the plans.

Hera exuded the traits of a natural born leader by exhibiting a steadfast resolve to make an immediate run past an Imperial Blockade after their first attempt resulted in the destruction of food and supplies meant for starving Rebel allies. Hera’s exceptional skills as a pilot brings about a mission to acquire a new ship that doesn’t sit well with her. The desire to help those in need prevents from her from seeing the larger picture right away.

Enter the B-Wing, a heavily armed star fighter that aided the Rebel Alliance at the Battle of Endor is just a prototype here. Hera being the first person to ever fly this craft is cool in its own right, but seeing the sword shaped vessel fly through dangerous terrain coupled with music brought about a majestic ambiance that signified the start of something important. B-Wing’s payload was also impressive and made me wish we could have seen it on screen during Episode VI.

Balancing Hera’s backstory and the origin of the B-Wing made for an engaging episode but prevented the use of flashbacks to illustrate elements of Hera’s past such as her childhood and perhaps an appearance from her father, Cham Syndulla. Hearing Hera reflect on days gone by and her love of flying, however, was a suitable substitute that showed us the strength and conviction that actress Vanessa Marshall made so profound.

Hera being the second best star pilot in the galaxy (we know who number one is) and the revelation that the B in B-Wing stands for blade, carves out an informative and action filled episode of Rebels. More time could have been a great asset, but we have to make the most of the 22 minutes we’re given each week.

Daniel Fleetwood is now one with the Force.

Daniel Fleetwood, the terminally ill young man who was granted his final wish to see The Force Awakens passed away four days after seeing the movie. It’s hard to read stories like this because on one end, we’re happy that his final wish become a reality. On the other hand, our hearts are a little bit broken because Ashley Fleetwood, Daniel’s wife, lost her soul mate and best friend.

Ashley’s Go Fund Me page has raised a lot of goodwill due to the generous amount of donations she has received. Daniel’s medical expenses appear to be in the $100,000 range and every little bit helps. While Daniel is no longer with us, he will always be remembered by his family and friends, and known to all Star Wars fans has the first person to see The Force Awakens.

Cigars to Vaporizers; The Evolution of Smoking

$
0
0

The tobacco industry has come a long way from its origins in pre-Columbian America, where the commodity was apparently cultivated and smoked in hollowed pipes for ceremonial, as well what was then thought to be medicinal, purposes. Tobacco gradually expanded from pipe-smoking, eventually going on to chewing and snuff.

Welcome, cigarettes!

Cigarettes surfaced in their simplest form during in the early 1600s, but didn't become popular within the countries like the United States until after the Civil War. So this would have been in the late 1860s and beyond. Cigars never even existed until the early 1800s and haven’t changed much since their invention. Cigarettes on the other hand, have come a very long way since their earliest iterations.

Tobacco Trouble

The problem with traditional cigarettes is that they contain tobacco, which contains nicotine, an addictive ingredient that is highly addictive and has kept smokers smoking. The ravages of tobacco were not known initially, with many European physicians subscribing to the Native American belief that tobacco was an effective medicine against a number of ailments.
