Kickstart Circus Posterus' Stop Motion Short Film, CALLIOPE

$

Just in time for Halloween comes a Kickstarter campaign for a spooky stop-motion film, Calliope, that brings together all-star creators from the world of designer toys (Circus Posterus’ toy designers Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters), stop-motion innovator and Annie Awards Special Achievement recipient Martin Meunier (Coraline) and filmmaker Jon Schnepp (The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened). Based on Olivas’ classic toy character Calliope Jackalope, Calliope is a post-apocalyptic, fantasy adventure about an other-worldly girl who’s unaware that she’s actually Pestilence, one of the four horseman of the apocalypse. If funded through the now live Kickstarter campaign, Calliope will be written and co-directed by Meunier, Olivas and Peters, executive produced by Schnepp and feature artisans, animators, and fabricators that have worked on stop-motion features including The Nightmare Before Christmas. Calliope is planned as an 8-10 minute stop-motion short film and is the most ambitious project yet from the husband and wife creative team of Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters; it will be the first production from Circus Posterus Films, the couple’s New Mexico-based arts collective Circus Posterus.

“Calliope Jackelope has been a part of my world for a long time, on paper and as a toy,” said Kathie Olivas. “Seeing her fully animated in Calliope is the best kind of surreal.”

Three-time Emmy nominee Amy Schumer (“Inside Amy Schumer”) stars as a commitment-phobic journalist in Trainwreck, the film Fandango calls “the funniest movie of the year,” is coming to Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on November 10, 2015, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Schumer takes her undeniable talents to the big screen tossing aside rom-com conventions with a timely and outrageously funny portrait of an unapologetically independent career woman whose hard-partying personal life is turned upside down when she meets Mr. Might-Be-Right. Directed and produced by comedy guru Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, “Girls”), Trainwreck UNRATED arrives on Blu-ray & DVD with even more hysterical moments, including deleted scenes, gag reel, line-o-rama & more!

Since she was a little girl, Amy (Amy Schumer) has been taught that monogamy isn’t realistic. Now a magazine writer, Amy lives by that credo, enjoying an uninhibited life free from stifling, boring romantic commitment. But when she finds herself starting to fall for the subject of a new article she’s writing, a charming and successful sports doctor (Bill Hader), Amy starts to wonder if other grown-ups, including this guy who really seems to like her, might be onto something.

Schumer, called “comedy’s funny & fearless new voice” by Entertainment Weekly, heads up an accomplished cast featuring Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live,” Inside Out), NBA All-Star LeBron James, Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom), Brie Larson (The Gambler, 21 Jump Street), Colin Quinn (“Saturday Night Live,” “Girls”), Vanessa Bayer (“Saturday Night Live,” “Portlandia”) and WWE star John Cena, in a contemporary look at romance that’s “hilarious, heartwarming, and refreshingly honest” (WNYW FOX-TV).

And thanks to our friends at Universal Home Entertainment, we're giving away a copy to a Forces of Geek reader!

In an unprecedented partnership, National Geographic Channel and GE present the new series BREAKTHROUGH, produced by Imagine Entertainment and Asylum Entertainment. BREAKTHROUGH kicks off on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on National Geographic Channel.

BREAKTHROUGH is a revolutionary new series about scientific explorers from leading universities and institutions and how their cutting-edge innovations and advancements will change our lives in the immediate future and beyond. The series intends to bring to life the stories, people and technology behind these breakthroughs, and show how they are changing our world.

Each hourlong episode is directed by a Hollywood visionary — Angela Bassett, Peter Berg, Paul Giamatti, Akiva Goldsman, Ron Howard and Brett Ratner.

BREAKTHROUGH explores remarkable scientific discoveries in brain science, longevity, water, energy, pandemics and cyborg technology. Lifesaving, mind-boggling innovation is a part of everyday life, so we sometimes take it for granted. It happens in the blink of an eye — on battlefields and playgrounds, in supercolliders and the International Space Station, in smart homes and smart cars. These are modern-day revolutions in how we live.
BREAKTHROUGH will explore the courage, imagination, passion and self-sacrifice of the scientists bringing these innovations to life.

Breakthroughs covered include:

Fighting Pandemics (Directed and Narrated by Peter Berg)
Premieres Nov. 1 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT

Berg will take viewers into the dramatic, inspiring and sometimes heartbreaking world of pioneers scrambling to stop an outbreak and save the world from future plagues. The recent Ebola outbreak forced medical science to evolve as quickly as the virus it is fighting, provoking breakthroughs that may give birth to a world virtually free of pathogens. From antibiotics and vaccines to computer programs that predict how viruses will spread, new lifesaving tools will be used to fight a wide range of viruses in the near future, including HIV, influenza, dengue fever, malaria and a host of other killer diseases. Follow Dr. Maria Croyle, who has developed a revolutionary way to introduce a vaccine into a common cold virus; Erica Ollman Saphire, who organized a world-wide consortium to find an antibody treatment for viral hemorrhagic fevers, including Ebola; and Dr. Ian Crozier, a World Health Organization (WHO) virologist who fought Ebola in Sierra Leone until he contracted the disease himself and spent 40 agonizing days locked in an isolation ward at Emory University Hospital. Crozier recovered — only to find the virus was still multiplying in his eye.

More Than Human (Directed and Narrated by Paul Giamatti)
Premieres Nov. 8 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT

Chances are you either are, or you know, a cyborg: a person who is aided or enhanced by embedded technology, such an artificial limbs or pacemakers. But advances in science are taking us beyond replacement parts and into a new realm that is changing the nature of the human body and the human mind. The fusion of biology and technology is making us better, stronger, faster and smarter. How we think, how we feel, how we experience the world: Everything is changing. Now we are learning how to manipulate our genetic code and seize the keys to creation. But as the natural and man-made worlds merge, will we become more than human? And do we risk losing our humanity? Watch Trish Aelker at Lockheed Martin Exoskeleton Technologies build exoskeletons that give mere mortals super strength, and Dr. Miguel Nicolelis, a brain-machine interfaces expert whose work with the Walk Again Project is giving hope to people with traumatic spine injuries.

Decoding the Brain (Directed by Brett Ratner; Narrated by Adrien Brody)
Premieres Nov. 15 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT

After millennia of speculation about what goes on inside the human brain, we now have the tools to explore its hidden reaches. These tools are leading to research that may help those suffering from afflictions such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. They are also shedding light on the mystery of consciousness and what makes us who we are. Meet leading researchers and scientists, such as Dr. John Schenck, who helped pioneer MRI technologies and was the first person to have his brain imaged by the machine in the early 1980s; Dr. Mohamad Koubeissi, a neurologist who developed a groundbreaking way to treat epilepsy; and Dr. Steve Ramirez, who is investigating how to implant or erase memories and hopes his work could help people suffering from PTSD.

The Age of Aging (Directed and Narrated by Ron Howard)
Premieres Nov. 29 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT

In recent years, close study of the aging process has opened up new ways that could help us all live healthier for longer. Can we move beyond treating individual diseases and instead treat the aging process itself? Would a longer life necessarily be a better life? A loose-knit group of researchers believe the real breakthrough is extending our health span — the period of life spent free of disease. Hear from Laura Deming, who dropped out of M.I.T. at the age of 14 and committed herself to finding and funding projects that can expand the human health span, and Dr. Brian Kennedy, whose work in the basic biology of aging has been crucial to the development of countless other researchers’ work.

Energy From the Edge (Directed by Akiva Goldsman; Narrated by Jason Bateman)
Premieres Dec. 6 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT

We are surrounded by clean, raw energy waiting to be tapped — energy that could eventually replace fossil fuels. Finding new ways to harness the energy around us takes a rare breed of scientist/engineers: men and women with a combination of technical skill, imagination and unwavering focus. This hour will follow innovative alternative energy projects and the colorful people behind them, like engineer Louis Michaud, who is building a tornado machine — and harnessing the energy it produces; and the team at the National Ignition Facility, who are trying to save the world by harnessing the power of controlled fusion.

Water Apocalypse (Directed and Narrated by Angela Bassett)
Premieres Dec. 13 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT

California is on the brink of an apocalypse. The state faces a future of drought that will cost billions in lost farm revenue and thousands of jobs. The challenges facing the state are not unique: All over the world, governments are struggling with bigger populations and a diminishing supply of freshwater. Bassett will focus on inspiring stories of people working to change the world, such as Sandra Postel, who is trying to bring water back to the Colorado River Delta, which became a dried-up husk after the Colorado River was diverted to feed the western United States; Aaron Mandell, whose solar-powered desalinization project offers a way to conserve and reuse this precious resource; and Italian architect Arturo Vittori, whose quest to build a water-collecting tower in a remote village in Ethiopia dramatizes all the triumphs and challenges of innovation.

Presented by National Geographic and GE, brands long dedicated to innovation, science and exploration, the series will air on National Geographic Channels in 440 million homes in 171 countries and in 45 languages, as well as on the Spanish language network Nat Geo Mundo. Additional executive producers include Michael Rosenberg from Imagine Entertainment, Ryann Lauckner from Asylum Entertainment, Beth Comstock and Linda Boff from GE, Michael Cascio and Allan Butler from National Geographic Channel. Tim Pastore is president, original programming and production for NGC.

GE and National Geographic Channel are united in their commitment to inspire the most curious minds the world over with the new series BREAKTHROUGH.

After the jump watch world premiere of BREAKTHROUGH's premiere episode, FIGHTING PANDEMICS, in its entirety before its network debut that night, Sunday, Nov. 1 at 9/8c and learn how to win one of ten subscriptions to National Geographic Magazine that we're giving away!

Underrated 007: QUANTUM OF SOLACE

$

The release of James Bond 24 a/k/a SPECTRE is imminent.

The previous entry Skyfall came out three years ago, timed to the fiftieth anniversary of the 007 movies, and its series-best billion-dollar global box office gross will be hard to top. In an effort to temper expectations somewhat, and to catch up on dangling plot strings reportedly tied up in the new movie, let’s take a look at one of the more underrated 007 adventures: Daniel Craig’s second stint as 007, 2008’s Quantum of Solace.

With the exception of Sean Connery’s From Russia With Love, the “second missions” of every Bond actor all share a few things in common: the films were all troubled or rushed productions, and all have all been met with decidedly tepid response.

Roger Moore had The Man with the Golden Gun, which was made on the quick but is not as revered as Live and Let Die. Timothy Dalton’s Licence to Kill was not as successful as The Living Daylights and was hobbled by both the 1988 Writers’ Guild strike and a cut-rate promotional campaign (the studio was going bankrupt, again). Pierce Brosnan’s Tomorrow Never Dies is efficient, but after 007’s explosive comeback in GoldenEye, Pierce’s second outing is rather generic and feels like the Bond Machine on auto-pilot.

Likewise, Daniel Craig’s sophomore effort Quantum of Solace (QOS) couldn’t possibly have lived up to the standard set by his debut in Casino Royale.

Let’s get that out of the way up front: Casino Royale is a tough act to follow, and the makers of QOS waged a thankless and uphill battle to live up to impossible expectations.

We hadn’t had a Bond movie as good as Casino Royale since the height of the Roger Moore era. Not surprisingly, fans and critics were rather harsh to QOS because it’s a lot scrappier. It’s also the shortest Bond movie ever and zooms and careens along so fast and furiously it’s over before you know it. Given that some of the more bloated 007 affairs tend to overstay their welcome, QOS’s unexpected brevity is a good thing.

FOG! Goes To THE HALLOW Screening With EDGAR WRIGHT And CORIN HARDY!

Written by Sharon Knolle
Photo via @edgarwright
It's nice to have a BFF like Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright: First-time director Corin Hardy got a nice intro at the Los Angeles screening of his horror movie, The Hallow, from his director pal, who revealed they bonded as lads over their shared love of Evil Dead 2.

Edgar Wright said, “We met back in 1991, maybe when we were both 15 and this is his first movie and as far as I'm concerned, it's been a long time coming. Corin has been making these amazing music videos or short films over the years. So I've always been rooting for him to make his first horror film.” [Wright talked more about how they met and he asked Hardy about when he realized it might not have been such a bright idea to cast a 5-month old infant as one of his main characters, but my audio cut out, alas. What's clear is that they are great friends and huge geeks united by their genuine love for horror movies.]

The Hallow stars Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones, The Awakening) as “tree doctor” Adam from London who's been sent to survey the rural Irish area for future construction.

He, his wife Clare (Bojana Novakovic), infant son, and dog move into an abandoned home where the locals are downright hostile. Or are they just trying to warn them about what dreadful things they might be disturbing in the forest?

What follows is a slow-building horror as Adam and Clare realize “The Hallow” is real and they're in very real danger.

Why INDIANA JONES is (Sadly) Anachronistic With Today’s Audience

$
0

Hints from Steven Spielberg that there might be an Indiana Jones 5 quickly brought groans from the internet. It was yet another opportunity for people to complain about Indy surviving a nuclear blast in the fourth film. That grievance represents everything that’s wrong with today’s audiences.

The refrigerator scene in Crystal Skull is the least of the problems with that movie. Yes, it’s completely unrealistic and defies the laws of physics, but Indiana Jones exists in a universe where his hat rarely falls off his head, and when it does, it always finds its way back to him like a lost puppy.

It’s that kind of movie (wink-wink).

And let’s not forget everything with Hebrew ghosts killing Nazis, the Holy Grail healing bullet wounds, and Indy surviving a free-fall from a plane onto a mountain in a raft.

The original 3D computer-animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as The Special, the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

Everything is EVEN MORE awesome because Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures will release The LEGO Movie: The Special Special Edition on Blu-ray on November 3 exclusively at Target. Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street), The LEGO Movie is the hilarious story of a nobody who saves everybody. The Special Special Edition features a bonus Blu-ray disc with over two hours of new special features. The LEGO Movie stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Emmet, an ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, and Will Ferrell as the voice of President Business, aka Lord Business, an uptight CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with micro-managing his own life. Voicing the members of Emmet’s rebel crew on this heroic mission are Morgan Freeman (Oblivion) as the ancient mystic Vitruvius; Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) as tough-as-nails Wyldstyle, who mistakes Emmet for the savior of the world and guides him on his quest; Will Arnett (TV’s The Millers) as the mysterious Batman, a LEGO minifigure with whom Wyldstyle shares a history; Nick Offerman (TV’s Parks and Recreation) as the craggy, swaggering pirate Metal Beard, obsessed with revenge on Lord Business; Alison Brie (TV’s Community) as the sweet and loveable Unikitty and Charlie Day (TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Benny, the 1980-something Spaceman.

From a story by Dan Hageman, Kevin Hageman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, The LEGO Movie was produced by Dan Lin and Roy Lee, with Jill Wilfert, Matthew Ashton, Kathleen Fleming, Allison Abbate, Zareh Nalbandian, Jon Burton, Benjamin Melniker, Michael E.
