Lo, There Shall Come A SUPERMANSION!

$

0

Titanium Rex (voiced by Bryan Cranston) is an aging super hero who has long been the head of the League of Freedom, a once-proud assembly of super heroes that isn’t what it used to be. The aging, irascible Titanium Rex finds himself playing mentor to a new crop of Millennial-aged heroes who have little interest in their noble profession. Much to Titanium Rex’s chagrin, they’re all thrown together to live in the SuperMansion, where the young heroes learn how to harness their super powers and fight for justice, liberty… and the need to stay relevant to society.

The stop-motion animated comedy comes from the minds of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, creators of the Emmy-winning “Robot Chicken.” SuperMansion also stars the voices of Seth Green (“Family Guy”), Keegan-Michael Key (“Key and Peele”), Jillian Bell (“Workaholics”), Chris Pine (Star Trek) and an incredible roster of guest stars. Cranston also serves as executive producer, alongside Green, John Harvatine, Eric Towner and James Degus. Matthew Senreich and Zeb Wells of “Robot Chicken” are creators, writers and executive producers.

Join Titanium and Black Saturn, Cooch, American Ranger, Brad and Jewbot in their uproariously inappropriate adventures in SuperMansion, premiering today – only on Crackle.

And on Forces of Geek! After the jump, check out the first episode of SuperMansion.

Getting Things Started...Again: A Look At The New Muppets

By Erin Maxwell

The new season of mind-numbing television is underway and we are already three episodes into the new Muppet reboot. Thus far, critiques on the new, “more realistic” version of Jim Henson’s zany variety affair from the ‘70s have been mixed. While few praise the writing and real-world scenarios our furry friends are now living, many do not care for the updates.

Here. Take a gander:

“This reinvention just feels a little overthought. “The Muppets” does not need to be snarky to be smart, and there’s nothing antiquated about joy.” - Robert Lloyd, New York Times

“...There’s some laughter in the early episodes of ‘The Muppets’ and a ton of built-in affection, but the wait for a great show continues.” - Daniel Fienberg, The Hollywood Reporter

“The fun-loving comedy is gone. Let's create a Muppet movie on finding it.” - Marisa Ferandez, The Post

“A sexy, cynical adult Muppet show is the worst idea ever.” - Jonathan Bernstein, The Telegraph

To understand why so many people are disappointed in this new version of the Muppets requires a look back at what made the original The Muppet Show so great. While the premise was generally the same (a behind the scenes look at the making of an entertainment event), the attitudes and general universe for which they are set are vastly different.

Making Cosplay a Cinch

As a lover of dress up, styling and fashion, lingerie and fetish wear, corsets very definitely have a place in my heart. An expansive, palatial ballroom sized place.

So naturally, my many social media feeds are partially dedicated to posts made from related pages that I like and people whom I follow who are also into corsets.

And being on the cusp of thirty, I have also started to follow a lot of health and fitness related social media outlets; assuming that if I have enough healthy-living posts popping up that eventually something will absorb into my psyche and I can somehow hypnotise myself into effortlessly shaking off the extra pounds that my recently changing metabolism has gifted me with.

Me enjoying a Kiku Corset in the ‘Most Haunted’ Albert Hall in Manchester UK, as photographed by Sara Wolvin

I’ve noticed however, that in the last twelve months or so there seem to have been a lot of misinformed articles springing up on the web and in women’s magazines about corsets and fitness. The link between the two subjects may not be immediately apparent, but the general jist is that there is an epidemic of people (I have no idea which people exactly) being duped into thinking that waist training is a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise and are permanently damaging their bodies by squeezing them into corsets or waist cinchers. These articles are usually punctuated with links to the authors’ expensive diet plans or miracle shakes, and very rarely contain any reference at all to genuine, scientific health resources.

Of course about 80% of this anti-corsetry waffle is utter nonsense. (The other 20% being that corseting is no substitute for a diet and exercise; it isn’t!)

If you’re looking to know more about corsets, for waist training or for costuming and generally looking beautiful, then take your advice from someone in the know.

Why TRANSFORMERS VS. G.I. JOE Makes Me Feel Like a Kid Again

$

I’ve been a fan of artist/writer Tom Scioli since I first read his creator owned work, The Myth of 8-Opus. While it was his decidedly Jack Kirby-esque style that caught my attention, it was his obvious passion for comics that made me a fan.

Godland, American Barbarian, Final Frontier-- I was hooked on it all and, finally, as a comics fan, I thought I’d seen it all.

Then he went and got a gig on IDW’s Transformers vs. G.I. Joe and he proved just how wrong I was.

Transformers vs. G.I. Joe reads like the fever dream of an 8-year-old kid living in 1985 distilled through the lens of an auteur in 2015 with the singular goal of pushing comics beyond their limits. On the surface, the comic is indeed the story of giant robots versus elite soldiers, but it’s also about mankind’s contact with giant transforming space gods and the effect that has on Earth (hint: it’s not good). It’s about grabbing Promethean fire and that Promethean fire grabbing back.

With each issue, Scioli pushes not just the story forward, but the medium of sequential storytelling as well. Unlike other books that have used the same title, this isn’t just for fans looking for a nostalgia fix—this is for people who want, well, a transformative experience.

Slim Jim: Breaking Records and Howling At Moons...

$

Growing up, I had a fascination with Slim Jims.

First of all, they were cheap.  You could buy several with the change in your pocket, and could rationalize the health benefits from consuming them ("They aren't candy.  They aren't sweet....just delicious meat...").

Plus, according to their ads in comic books (which to this day, I cite as an authority and valuable news source, Slim Jims promoted lycanthropy.

Granted some of the ads featured Dracula, but I was clever enough to know that vampires craved blood, and would likely be dissatisfied by the chewy meat stick, but being a werewolf...that's something cool and if the only real side effect is crave Slim Jims, that's a curse I could both live with and enjoy.

Sadly, the knowledge found in the comics wasn't accurate and my addiction to the meat-sticks not only kept me human, but now very, very thirsty.

Fortunately, Slim Jim is still inspiring people.

Now, the iconic snack company is encouraging folks who enjoy the tasty treats to break the Slim Jim One-Handed World Records (the other hand conveniently occupied with previously mentioned Slim Jim meat snack).

And some of them are pretty impressive:

In the comments let me know which World Record you think you might be able to achieve.

The Road To Episode VII: Star Wars Reads Day

Today will be a day long remembered as today marks the fourth annual Star Wars Reads Day!

There are thousands of events being held all over the globe as this wide ranging celebration is on a mission to promote literacy while uniting fans of the franchise.

I’m going to be honest, I never knew that Star Wars Reads Day was even a thing until my editor asked me to write an article about it.

Once I looked into what this event was, it really resonated with me because Star Wars taught me how to read.

In Kindergarten, during recess, while my classmates vied for toys and coloring books, I made a mad dash to the cassette player and listened to a read-along version of Return of the Jedi. One day, the cassette player went missing but the book was still there. I decided to read it myself instead of going along with the narration.

My teacher walked by and was astonished as she heard me reading passages aloud about Stormtroopers and Ewoks. She knelt down, looked me right in the eye and said with joyous enthusiasm, “Atlee, you can read!”

At the time, I didn’t understand what the big deal was.

She handed me a Clifford book and asked me to read it so she could see if I truly knew how to read, or if what I was reciting with the Star Wars book was due to memorization. My teacher acted as if she won the lottery when I began to read passages about the big red dog and his friend Emily.

I still didn’t think this was a big deal, but everyone else did, especially my parents. I was even asked to read the entire Return of the Jedi book in front of the whole class. I don’t ever remember having difficulty reading, but my mother told me otherwise.

Star Wars has produced thousands of literary tales over the years. Between books, comics, audio renditions and magazines, these iconic characters and remarkable adventures have touched our lives.

Let’s take a look at three different versions of a story that takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Library of Souls: The Third Novel of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children (review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz
I’ve tried to write this review several times now, not because the book made it difficult, far from it, but because my mind is still swimming in the universe that author Ransom Riggs has created.

The world of the Peculiars is completely different than any other you’ve ever read, more so because Riggs has populated the story with found flea market photographs that give weight, not only to the story itself, but to the characters that are more alive than any fictional creature has ever been.

(if you are unfamiliar with the Peculiar Children series, stop reading now and buy them immediately)

In this third and final installment, Jacob Portman and Emma Bloom (a peculiar who has the power to sniff out other Peculiars and create fire from the palms of her hands) are where we left them in the second book, Hollow City, in a war-torn London, battling to save the world of the Peculiars from utter and complete destruction from the wights (a nasty creature who feeds on Peculiars) from entering and destroying The Library of Souls, a housing facility for the souls of important Peculiars who have departed from the world and who, if released, could obliterate everything.

God, I want to tell you more, but doing so would make the thrilling read less impactful.

Pity the post-Heathers teenage romantic-comedy horror satire. Today's snark has to be sharper, darker, and meaner to make a mark with millennials, let alone their parents.

Compare Fox's brilliantly warped Scream Queens to MTV's limp Scream reboot. While my generation certainly had their share of lame horror-comedies (My Demon Lover anyone?), we also had quite a few instant classics that, frankly, still hold up.

You'll lose an argument with me about Night of the Comet's still-absent entry into the Criterion Collection.

Michael Steves's indie feature Clinger means well, but falls fast into failed horror-comedy a la Idle Hands.

That's a shame, since it's obviously going for more of the successful execution of Warm Bodies or even the cult 90s zombie-teen terror of My Boyfriend's Back.

The point being the film's nothing new.

This Halloween Bruce Campbell returns to the world of the Evil Dead.

In the highly anticipated series Campbell reprises his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario, and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.

The cast is led by Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) in the role of Ash Williams, Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus,” “Xena”) as Ruby, a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks, Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) as Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick, Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) as Kelly Maxwell, a moody wild child trying to outrun her past, and Jill Marie Jones (“Sleepy Hollow”) as Amanda Fisher, a disgraced Michigan State Trooper set to find our anti-hero Ash and prove his responsibility in the grisly murder of her partner.
