0
0

Great Scott! Forget Pepsi Perfect or your Pitbull Hoverboard, skip out on seeing Max Spielberg's Jaws 19 and hanging at Café 80s and get ready for theBack to the Future documentary, Back in Time.

In Back in Time, cast, crew, and fans explore the classic time-travel trilogy's resonance throughout pop culture. As the project evolved it took the filmmakers from the joyous nostalgia at a massive London fan event to the living rooms of Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly), Robert Zemeckis (Director, co-writer), Steven Spielberg (Producer), Bob Gale (co-writer), Lea Thompson (Lorraine Baines McFly) and Christopher Lloyd (Dr. Emmett Brown) as well as Huey Lewis, James Tolkan (Mr. Strickland) Claudia Wells (The original Jennifer Parker) and more. Nothing is overlooked as they explore everything from Eric Stoltz’s casting to the invention of the hoverboard. Traveling throughout the world and leaving no stone unturned brings unparalleled behind-the-scenes access to the “BTTF” lexicon.

The exciting documentary will be available on VOD, DVD/Blu-ray and select theaters on the very day Marty McFly arrived in Back to the Future 2– on “Future Day,” October 21, 2015. Keep an eye on iTunes as the pre-order will go live any day now!

Getting Wet: a SUPER SOAKER Flashback

I don't know about you guys, but this summer was so hot it melted the vinyl steering wheel cover on my 1999 Daewoo Nubira!

Climate Change?

I dunno; I seem to remember Captain Planet telling me the world was going to cool like that move The Day After Tomorrow.

... or was it heat up under a dome of CO2 from that dude with the pig face? I forget.

Anyway, to beat the heat I decided to profile the greatest summer toy to hit the world since the Slip 'N Slide:

The Super Soaker.

During summer, when I wasn't in YMCA day camp, I was thrust outside with my friends.

You see, as a child of the time before the internet, there really wasn't much to do and, come August, the last place you wanted to be was inside an un-air-conditioned house.

So my friends and I would do all sorts of water-related things like play with squirt guns, water balloon wars, the above mentioned Slip N' Slide, etc.

All of that changed when the Super Soaker 50 came into play.

INFORMUCATE: Get The Important News You Need, Easier Than Ever

Although we now have more access to information than ever before, at times the sheer mass of it can be overwhelming.  As newspapers continue to die and sensationalized television news tends to gear toward human interest, most of us get our news on the go, on phones and tablets, often on social media.

And therein lies the rub.  Receiving the news via social media isn't particularly reliable.  You have to navigate through the interests and memes of what your friends are posting.  There might be a story of interest or two that actually delivers news, but it's likely biased or sensationalized or both.

Which is why I think Informucate.com is delivering a much needed service, providing All the News in Just 12 Views.

Comic-Cons Versus Tabletop Gaming Conventions

0

So I just got back from having a wonderful time at Strategicon (the biggest table top gaming convention in the Los Angeles area), which I go to three times a year.

Strategicon is a convention (a “Con”), but it’s a tabletop gaming convention as opposed to a Comic or Fan or Pop Culture Convention.

Wait – what’s a gaming convention?

I’m glad you asked, and I’m going to tell you what it is by writing a few words about my time at Strategicon.

When you walk into a gaming convention like Strategicon, the first thing you notice is that it’s a little bit more low-key than a comic/fan/pop culture con.

This isn’t to say that there aren’t a lot of people, but there’s less to see as you walk the halls of the hotel, and the people Cosplaying are clearly trying the do so in a way that is comfortable. There’s also less to buy, and even though there is a dealer hall, you can tell that it’s not the main draw of the Con.

The main draw of the Con is playing table top games.

Win THE MARVELS and a Brian Selznick Library

From Brian Selznick, the Caldecott Medal–winning creator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck comes a breathtaking new voyage.

In this magnificent reimagining of the form he originated, two stand-alone stories—the first in nearly 400 pages of continuous pictures, the second in prose—together create a beguiling narrative puzzle.

The journey begins on a ship at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel. After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in a London theatre. There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage.

Nearly a century later, Joseph Jervis runs away from school and seeks refuge with an uncle in London. Albert Nightingale’s strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past.

A gripping adventure and an intriguing invitation to decipher how the two narratives connect, The Marvels is a loving tribute to the power of story from an artist at the vanguard of creative innovation.

Brian Selznick is setting out on a multi-city tour to celebrate the release of The Marvels! Find out where to meet Brian Selznick on his tour for #THEMARVELS http://bit.ly/1NZi73y

To celebrate the release of The Marvels, we're giving away a collection of Brian Selznick's work which includes The Marvels, Wonderstruck, and The Invention of Huge Cabret!

James “Whitey” Bulger.

If you are from Massachusetts, specifically the Boston Area, you know that name.

Hell, if you were alive and cognizant at some point during the last forty years, you know that name.

You know the story that goes along with it.

You also know the man attached to it.

Black Mass is this story.

Johnny Depp is “Whitey”

For those of you who have been living under  rock for the last forty years, Black Mass is the story of one time FBI informant turned FBI Most Wanted Man, James “Whitey” Bulger as he takes his standing as a small time South Boston Irish gangster and turns it into one of the most powerful and feared man in the city, all thanks to a deal cut with the FBI in the mid seventies to bring down the North End Italian Mafia.

For twenty plus years Bulger murdered, extorted, dealt drugs and laundered money hand over fist while the FBI turned a blind eye. This tentative alliance fell apart when a new DA was brought in and began unraveling just how deep and twisted Bulger had his hnds in the pockets of the FBI, namely his old time friend and agent John Connolly and his team.

With no one to protect him he went on the run for over 12 years only to finally be captured and charged with 19 counts of murder, conspiracy, narcotics distribution, extortion and shoplifting. He is serving two consecutive life sentences plus five years.

In Black Mass, Johnny Depp finally brings in a performance that all but obliterates the memory of the past Tim Burton mishaps and staggering Capt. Jack-scapades.

FOG! Hits Long Beach Comic Con: Comic Books! Comic Books! AND Jim Rockford’s Firebird, Too!

0

By Lily and Generoso Fierro

In the early morning hours of the first day of Long Beach Comic Con, we arrived to a calmly bustling convention center to pick up our badges. After waiting for the opening of the registration booths, we picked up our badges in what may be the easiest and most welcoming experience we’ve ever had at a large public event in all of our years attending conferences, which was a foreshadowing of the fun-packed yet uncomplicated weekend to come.

After opting out of attending the San Diego Comic Con (too many lines and maybe just too much pop culture to digest), we decided on attending Long Beach’s because we hoped for more of a comic focused event, and our decision did not disappoint. Other pop culture forms were certainly represented, with one of our favorites being the impressive display of cars from film and television, including the stand out one for us, Jim Rockford’s Firebird paired with his plaid jacket and even a business card because, let’s face it, the late James Garner was pretty damn cool. With our James Garner/Jim Rockford love aside, overall, Long Beach Comic Con was dedicated to the medium in its name: comics.

Despite the fact that the convention focused on primarily the comic book form, the medium never became too repetitive or boring because it was presented in multiple ways, ranging from the cosplayers (what was up with all of the Poison Ivy costumes?) to collector’s booths of old comics to a massive Artist Alley containing works from new creators to enlightening and entertaining panels about comics of the past, present, and future as well as how to make and distribute your own comics.

Long Beach Comic Con was a full comics immersion, and given the many different parts of making, reading, and collecting them, as reflected by the many different events and booths, it is a challenge for us to list out the highlights, but we’ve collected our top ten discoveries and moments from our first West Coast Comic Con.

The 42nd Telluride Film Festival kicked off last weekend and I was lucky enough to be able to work the crew and see some great films.

Only one Hitchhiker’s Guide reference, though! So disappointed.

Here are the five best films I saw at the festival this year.

We’ll see how many of them show up at awards’ season.

(These are in no specific order, so don’t hold me to it.)

THE ELTINGVILLE CLUB Continues to Skewer and Warn Us

0
0

One of the downsides about being a pop culture geek is that, over time, you see and read and listen to so much that it gets harder and harder to remember it all actively.

That’s why I think so many of us are prone to cataloging and trivia as part of our hobbies and collections. But even so, you can’t catch all the cool stuff. Eventually, you can’t remember it all.

One of those things, for me, is The Eltingville Club.

Bill, Josh, Pete and Jerry, a quartet of geeks in Eltingville, Staten Island, that comics artist/writer Evan Dorkin drew up to poke fun at geekworld’s stereotypes and illustrate some pretty legitimate gripes against it too.

I read their diatribe-laden misadventures in the mid- to late ‘90s, in back pages of Dorkin’s House of Fun and Dork comics. But by 2002, the club was gone along with Dork. Every once in a while I’d remember Dorkin’s sociopathic behemoths Milk & Cheese.

Eltingville faded into the back catalogs of my mind until a week ago when I read about a new Eltingville Club comic.

And, just like that, I experienced one of the great joys of geekery – stumbling upon something you really, really liked that you forgot how much you liked it.

Dorkin picks up the story with the boys in the present day as (nominal) adults at San Diego Comic-Con. As most of them cling to 1996 in their geek bunkers, Dorkin uses the Eltingville boys to show how much the world around them has changed.

Watching With My Sister: The ABC Movie of The Week, LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR

0

By Generoso Fierro

I wouldn’t be the cineaste that I am today if not for my late sister Rosaria.

As it was the 1970s during most of my adolescence, movies were an affordable route to an elevated state and one that could exalt an otherwise poor family to experience art for short money. One of my earliest film memories was that of my sister, hiding me under her coat so that I could get in to see Bob Fosse’s Lenny when I was all but six years old.

Why, you may ask? Well, she had to babysit me, but it was in its last week at the theater, and she so desperately wanted to see this Lenny Bruce biopic that she felt the need to commit such a desperate act.

I couldn’t recall much when I was asked about the movie from my friend Paul, but I did remember seeing two women kiss one another, which prompted a few questions for my sister after the film that were met with the answer “It happens,” but I couldn’t tell you much more than that.

On top of that somewhat illegal screening experience, my sister and I watched a lot of films together, both in the theater and on television. Such was the case with Richard Brooks’ misunderstood 1977 film, Looking For Mr. Goodbar, which appeared as the ABC Movie Of The Week in 1980, with only a few edits for content.

RAP PARTY: The Songs of Summer

0
0
With Labor Day behind us, the summer movie season has come to a close and the studios are either counting their coins or licking their wounds.

Tentpoles were planted and they had their chance to fly high, or become a cautionary tale for future endeavors.

Either way, many will go forgotten until DVD release, or if a nostalgic writer decides to unearth them for writing fodder.

Back in the ‘80s or ‘90s, a good big-budget action-packed comedy or slasher pic would live on well into the fall thanks to an accompanying hit song. Will Smith built much of his career on this phenomenon.

For a good, long stretch, it seemed almost impossible to release a high-adrenaline summertime romp without a rap song that shared its title. Or a single that featured a video was primarily made up of out-of-context clips from the movie.

How else were moviegoers going to know how fun Wild, Wild West was going to be?

In homage to the days of past, here is a look at a few of the forgotten songs-from-the-movies of summer.

An innocent time when artists like LL Cool J could sing with a straight face: “Getting the lap dance while I smash through your boat.”
