FOG! Chats With 'GRANDMA' Co-Star, Living Legend SAM ELLIOTT

Interview conducted by Sharon Knolle

Sam Elliot has always been a hard-working actor, but he's been in even greater demand over the last year, with roles in I'll See You in My Dreams with Blythe Danner and now Grandma with Lily Tomlin. He's very likely to get some awards love for the latter film, in which he plays an unlikely old flame of Lily's cantankerous main character, Elle.

FOG! talked to Elliott over the phone and asked him about working with Lily, his upcoming appearance on her Netflix series Grace and Frankie and why he's not the voice of “Beef, It's What's for Dinner” anymore.

He was exactly the gruffly modest gentleman you'd expect, not even minding when my dog started barking in the background.

“Oh no, I'm a dog person,” he assured me, going on to ask what kind of dog I have.

The Original THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Movies – Now on Digital HD!

As filmgoers go gaga over Guy Ritchie’s stylish and swinging origin story for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment offers a chance to grove to the original U.N.C.L.E. team with Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as it’s neer been seen – in eye popping, crystal clear 1080p Digital HD!

Crafted from the original series' frequent two-parters, these are more than mere patch-jobs, employing extra footage shot while filming the original episodes to expand the stories and including elements that would be deemed too racy or violent for American primetime television.

Notable guest stars in these films include Academy Award winner Jack Palance and Joan Crawford, Emmy Award winners Telly Savalas, Maurice Evans & Bradford Dillman, Oscar nominees Eleanor Parker, Rip Torn and Joan Blondell, as well as Vera Miles, Herbert Lom, Jill Ireland, Carol Lynley, Kim Darby, Terry-Thomas, Dorothy Provine, Star Trek star James Doohan and "James Bond" luminaries Curt Jurgens and Luciana Paluzzi. The late Yvonne Craig appears in two of the films.

These entertaining films are now available for download in Digital HD from Amazon and iTunes.

After the jump is the list of the eight The Man from U.N.C.L.E. features -- complete with one-line synopses, guest stars, the trailer and a link to the actual film.

In Defense Of Movie Studio Executives

0
0

Since the disastrous debut of the Fantastic Four reboot, two competing narratives have surfaced that attempt explain what when so wrong.

One is that direct Josh Trank couldn’t hack it and just crumbled under the pressure of his first big budget movie.

The other is the classic story of studio executives meddling with the production over fears that the movie won’t hit revenue goals, demanding script changes and reshoots.

Studio executives are easy targets. They’re not artists; they care more about making a lot of money than making a good film.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean they are in the wrong to interfere with a director.

Writer: Cullen Bunn

Artist: Larry Watts

Cover: Gabriel Hardman
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Pub. Date: August 26, 2015
UPC: 978160690691051999
$19.99

The recent Ashley Williams hack has exposed information that has global and interstellar consequences.

Ash in Space has revealed that Sheila (his bride from Army of Darkness) is long dead and there may have had some hanky-panky between The Chosen One, the real Ash Williams, and a female astronaut on the International Space Station.

What are we talking about, here?

Come on, baby! We’re just using the latest click bait headlines to get you into the world of the Deadites once again as we review Dynamite’s Army of Darkness: Ash in Space!

Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Harrow County, Magneto) brings Ash, his new hand and a chainsaw all the way past the stratosphere to fight Deadites and an evil satellite. Larry Watts (Robyn Hood, Grimm Fairy Tales) slays it on the art.

I wonder if Ash’s boss at S-Mart ever wondered where he went. He’s been gone awhile in the time stream, thanks to the spells in the Necronomicon.

If he times his return right, maybe he’ll be able to cash in some sick days.

Much like the movies, casinos offer a sense of escape; a place to lose oneself in a world of possibilities.

And films set around casinos offer a sense of adventure or danger.

From George Clooney and Brad Pitt planning the ultimate heist in Ocean's Eleven to Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci ruling the strip in Casino to the excitement of Daniel Craig as James Bond facing off against Mads Mikkelsen's Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, there's lots of tension as one enters the world of cards, slots, and chance and observes the winning strategies of casino.

Not every great movie about gambling and casinos is a blockbuster, many in fact are sleepers, attracting positive reviews, but somehow slipping under the radar.

Here are five films you might not have seen that you need to check out.

SINISTER 2 (review)

Review by Sharon Knolle
Produced by Jason Blum, Scott Derrickson,
Brian Kavanaugh-Jones
Written by C. Robert Cargill, Scott Derrickson
Directed by Ciaran Foy
Starring: James Ransone, Shannyn Sossamon,
Robert Daniel Sloan, Dartanian Sloan, Lea Coco,
Tate Ellington, John Beasley, Lucas Jade Zumann

Bughuul is back in the disappointing sequel to 2012's Sinister, that written, but not directed, by the first film's writers.

While the first film was genuinely terrifying – up to a point – the sequel gets by on a few jump scares and upping the gore on the killings the demon inspires his child followers to commit. And we see far too much of Bughuul for him to remain a figure of terror.

This time, Deputy So & So (James Ransone) is an ex-deputy: He was, naturally, a prime suspect in the slaying of crime writer Ellison Oswald (Ethan Hawke) and family since he was the only one seen coming and going before they were all horribly butchered.

Now he goes from murder house to murder house, burning them down before the evil cycle of killings can begin again.

His plan is foiled when he finds a family living in one of the supposedly abandoned houses.

Win IRIS on DVD!

IRIS pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris' dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life's sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle- class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. "I feel lucky to be working. If you're lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows."

Why Games Like Minecraft Will Always Be Popular

0
0
Whenever I read articles or hear news reports about video games and their apparent link to violence, I can't help but feel offended.

I have played games my entire life and they have never made me violent towards another person. I am more likely to get annoyed at myself and squeeze my controller in anger during a tricky boss fight or particularly hard puzzle.

What irks me the most in the violence debate is those people who latch on to first person shooter games, as if they are the only games people play.

Just like any other medium, there are different genres and many of these genres are overlooked. Anyone who tells you games make people violent are ignorant and often aren't aware that games can be a force for good.

Ahh, endless hours and hours of mining and building...

This is why games like Minecraft are so hugely popular and there are hundreds of imitators. I genuinely believe that it, along with world building or simulation games like it, will never cease to be popular.

The main reason?

DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD: THE STORY OF NATIONAL LAMPOON (review)

One of the main criticisms of political correctness is that it insists that the offended be allowed to dictate the intention and extent of his or her perceived injury.  It works under the supposition that all insult emerges from ignorance;  that the offending party was unintelligent or unsophisticated;  and that re-education be implemented once proper apologies have been made.

The founders of National Lampoon, Douglas Clark Kenny and Henry Beard, were Harvard kids who, within two years of graduating, published Bored Of The Rings, a stinging parody of J.R.R. Tolkien that sold 750,000 copies.

They were smart guys who really liked make people laugh, and who didn’t give a fuck who it bothered.  What set them apart from mere class clowns was their bracing, encompassing intellect and their view that satire was an innately hostile act.

Yes, You're Old: Flashing Back To 1985 & 1995

0
0
It appears that both 1985 and 1995 were friggin’ boom years for the movies and TV industry as most of the summer was spent celebrating milestones of your childhood favorites.

It seems that the season has been filled with outdoor screenings and midnight showings of Back to the Future, The Goonies, and Legend, all of which turned 30 this year.

And for the millennials, red Solo cups were raised in honor of Clueless, Showgirls and Seven.

But as twentysomethings get dressed in corduroy overalls and do the Truffle Shuffle on a grassy knoll, we need to remember that their a plenty of solid movies and shows that are also celebrating a milestone this year, albeit in a quiet and dignified fashion.

SALAD DAYS: A DECADE OF PUNK IN WASHINGTON DC (review)

Review by Clay N Ferno
Produced by Scott Crawford, Jim Saah
Written and Directed by Scott Crawford
Featuring Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, Thurston Moore,
Fred Armisen, John Stabb, Dave Grohl,
J. Mascis

Wishing for the days
When I first wore this suit
Baby has grown older
It's no longer cute
Too many voices
They've made me mute
Baby has grown ugly
It's no longer cute

But I stay on, I stay on
Where do I get off?
On to greener pastures
The core has gotten soft

— Minor Threat, Salad Days (1985)

Reflecting on these lyrics thirty years later, the documentary Salad Days: A Decade Of Punk In Washington DC serves as a backstage pass to one of the most explosive and important hardcore punk scenes in this country.

One could argue that Ian MacKaye’s bands and Dischord Records label defined the look, attitude and stage behavior of East Coast hardcore and straight edge kids from up in Boston down to Gainesville for years to come.

This documentary puts the spotlight on McKaye and Jeff Nelson (Minor Threat, Dischord Records), Henry Rollins (Black Flag), Dave Grohl as well as horror comic writer Steve Niles (Gray Matter) among many others to patch together a decent image of D.C. punk in the 80s.

Spectacularly portraying the story of the most important moment in Texas history,

HISTORY brings to life the thrilling, gut-wrenching and inspiring true story of how the state of Texas fought for their independence from the commanding rule of the Mexican General Santa Anna (Martinez), ultimately forming one of America's oldest and most legendary law enforcement agencies — The Texas Rangers. Journalism in Comics (Or, The Lack Thereof)

0
0

If I had my druthers, I’d write about comics and fan culture full-time.

Not just because it’s something that I enjoy and something that takes up most of my brain space (professional wrestling takes up the rest), but because as this little party of ours gets bigger and bigger, I would love for it to get the attention and scrutiny it deserves. I wish it could get good, old fashioned, real journalism, the kind that sports gets, and I wish it could attract real, dyed-in-the wool journalists.

I’m not the only person who wants better quality comics journalism, by the way.

A few weeks ago I watched a row on Twitter unfold on this very topic, with some actual fairly known representatives of the fan press lamenting the lack of quality, investigative journalism when it comes to comics.  Despite lots of people going back and forth for the better part of an afternoon, no one seemed able to put their finger on what could be done to provide better, sophisticated comics journalism, though. They got close a few times, but they were never able to vocalize the answer.

I think that’s because everyone knew the answer, but no one wanted to be the one to give it, because the answer is more than a little nihilistic.

TURBO KID (review)

Review by Joshua Gravel
Produced by Benoit Beaulieu, Anne-Marie Gélinas,
Tim Riley, Ant Timpson
Written and Directed by by François Simard,
Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell
Starring Munro Chambers, Laurence Leboeuf,
Michael Ironside, Edwin Wright, Aaron Jeffery

So there I was getting set for an evening of movies.

I was coming downstairs with a stack of VHS tapes to watch. I had BMX Bandits, 2019 After The Fall Of New York, Class Of Nuke ’Em High, and a bunch of other Italo-Post-Apocalypse, B-action, and Troma gore fests when I must have fallen and hit my head pretty hard…

At least I think that’s what happened as that is the only way to describe the crazed electro future past hallucination that is Turbo Kid.

Turbo Kid takes place in the apocalyptic wasteland that is 1997 where wars and pollution have wiped out most of mankind and left the remaining few to scavenge the Earth in search of usable supplies and clean water.

The Kid is one such scavenger, finding what he can trade for water while also building his collection of Turbo Rider comic books and toys.

One day the Kid meets a strange and enthusiastic girl named Apple who declares him to be her new friend and immediately attaches a tracking device to him. While scavenging one day Apple is kidnapped by the evil overlord Zeus to take part in his blood sports. While fleeing the Kid stumbles across the resting place of the real Turbo Rider and now armed with his suit and weaponry Turbo Kid sets out to save Apple and along with the Cowboy, also known as Frederic the Arm Wrestler, they will set out to take down Zeus and his main henchman Skeletron.

This is hands down the most fun I’ve had watching a film all summer and by far the best of the recent wave of eighties throwbacks.
