Today’s Triple Shot cheats the numbers a bit to include the latest two issues of Rucka’s Stumptown as the meat surrounded by Jeremy Haun’s incredible debut of The Beauty at Image and the ‘most likely to succeed’ crossover Star Trek/Green Lantern #2 putting Lantern Rings on all the right crew members.

Be sure to treat your LCS like your favorite place to be this Wednesday, because it probably is.

My SCARE LA Experience: Halloween. Haunts. Horror.

By Gavin Hignight

ScareLA!! What can I say… it was a terrifyingly good time… yep. I went there. But how could I not try and have a little fun writing about the event, when the event itself was so much fun.

ScareLA has grown tremendously since their launch a few years ago. And they have grown in the right way. Well organized, great location, solid panels, great vendors, and a really fun crowd and audience. Easily the best surprise of this year was the dark area of the convention that was like 3 or 4 mini-haunts all together. They did a great job!

This year was a blast! Between ScareLA and Monsterpalooza in Burbank, all of the groovy ghouly spooky kids and parents in SoCal are very spoiled. For those who didn’t get to attend, here’s a walk-through of the event in 13 terrifying seconds!

And if you blinked or flinched and want to see a gallery of gory goodness look below!

The Definitive Chronicle of the Iconic Trilogy Hits VOD and Select Theaters
on “Future Day,” October 21, 2015

Gravitas Ventures has announced the acquisition of all North American rights to BACK IN TIME, directed by Jason Aron, featuring interviews with Michael J. Fox, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, Bob Gale, Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd. ‘Back in Time’ looks at both the making of the original film and the fan culture that has developed over the years. It will be available on VOD, DVD/Blu-ray and select theaters on the very day Marty McFly (Fox) arrived in ‘Back to the Future 2’ – on “Future Day,” October 21, 2015.

In ‘Back in Time,’ cast, crew, and fans explore the classic time-travel trilogy's resonance throughout pop culture. As the project evolved it took them from the joyous nostalgia at a massive London fan event to the living rooms of Michael J. Fox, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, Bob Gale, Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd as well as Huey Lewis, James Tolkan (“Mr. Strickland”) Claudia Wells (“Jennifer Parker”) and more. Nothing is overlooked as they explore everything from Eric Stoltz’s casting to the invention of the hoverboard. Travelling throughout the world and leaving no stone unturned brings unparalleled behind-the-scenes access to the “BTTF” lexicon. '

“Iconic documentaries, like a bolt of lightning, only come around so often,” said Nolan Gallagher, Founder and CEO of Gravitas Ventures, “we are honored to be a part of the ‘Back to the Future’ mythology and bring this must-have film to the millions of fans who have loved the trilogy all these years.”

Filmmakers Jason Aron and Lee Leshen add, “As both fans of the trilogy and filmmakers, it was extremely important for us to have this documentary seen by as many people as possible.  We knew within minutes of meeting Nolan that the team at Gravitas would make that dream a possibility."

In addition to original cast and crew support, ‘Back in Time’ was directed by Jason Aron, who also served as Executive Producer with Louis Krubich, Akrum Sheikh and Ronald Ferguson. Adam F. Goldberg (“The Goldberg’s”) served as Co-Executive Producer. Lee Leshen produced.

The deal for ‘Back in Time” was negotiated by Nolan Gallagher for Gravitas and Josh Braun and Matt Burke from Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (review)

Produced by John Davis, Steve Clark-Hall,

Screenplay by Guy Ritchie, Lionel Wigram
Story by Jeff Kleeman, David Campbell Wilson,
Guy Ritchie, Lionel Wigram
Based on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. by Sam Rolfe
Directed by Guy Ritchie
Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander,
Elizabeth Debicki, Jared Harris, Hugh Grant

Guy Ritchie really is on his game.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is a great homage to the original 1960's television series. Everything about the film has been crafted lovingly to pay tribute and give the audience a great origin story that is entertaining in its own right.

From the fashion, to the cars, to the soundtrack and score, right down to the font choice in the opening credits, no detail has been missed to recreate the 60's.

Then it is spun on it head through Guy Ritchie's modern, kinetic storytelling that challenges you to keep up with it's breakneck pace.

At the heart of the Cold War suave, American spy Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) is forced to team up with his rugged, Russian adversary, Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) to find a former Nazi scientist before he can build an atomic bomb for a secret, criminal organization. Add into the mix Alicia Vikander as Gaby, the pint-sized mechanic with a Gidget factor of 10 and can handle a car like a pro for a teasing love interest, and Elizabeth Debicki as the sultry but ruthless villainess and you have all the ingredients for a classic spy thriller.

FORT TILDEN (review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz
Produced By Mollye Asher, Ariana Bernstein, Geoff Mansfield
Written and Directed By Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers
Starring Bridey Elliott, Clare McNulty, Griffin Newman,
Jeffrey Scaperrotta, Neil Casey, Alysia Reiner, Will Hines,
Peter Vack, Max Jenkins, John Early

In Fort Tilden two Brooklyn hipster twenty-somethings, Allie and Harper (Clare McNulty and Bridey Elliott) go on a quasi-road trip (via bikes and cabs) to the beach where they hope to embark on a Molly-fueled fuck fest with two guys they met at a party the night before.

Like most movies in which the characters go on a quest, the girls are plagued by various WTF issues (including almost running down an infant in a stroller, watching one of their bikes get stolen and putting kittens in a garbage can “to protect them”) while passive-aggressively dealing with the fact that their friendship is breaking apart due to Allie leaving for the Peace Corps.

While the premise is a good mash-up between Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion and a Noah Baumbach/Neil LaBute film, there is a certain likability issue with the characters that is hard to accept at times.

FANTASTIC FLOP(s)

By Erin Maxwell

As The Fantastic Four settles into rigor mortis at the box office, it becomes clear that over the last few years we as moviegoers have become spoiled thanks to Marvel and their solid string of superhero super-movies.

As moviegoers, we forgot that not all superhero movies are the same. Some of them are going to suck. But after a steady diet of delicious gourmet goodies supplied by Marvel and Disney, we forgot what a Twinkie tastes like.

It tastes fake and artificial. From the minute it crosses your lips, you know that it is bad for you. Everything from the packaging to the unholy expiration date should tip you off that the sweet treat you are about to eat is has no nutritional value whatsoever.

Like The Fantastic Four.

Right now, director Josh Trank and 20th Century Fox are in the midst of a fault-blaming pissing contest taking place on social media. The helmer blames the studio for suffocating him creatively while the studio calls out Trank’s insufferable and prima donna behavior.

And while it’s been fun to have a front row seat for the squabble, it doesn’t erase that there is a still a crappy movie out there that does little for the property that deserves better treatment.

It’s hard to remember the last time a superhero movie disappointed so thoroughly, the terrible trifecta of a horrible box office, awful reviews and fanboy letdown.

So let’s take a look at the last time the comic book community had a good group cry.

7 Shocking Video Game Moments

$

Before I launch into my list of shocking moments in video games (patience you must have my young Padawans), it's important to point out that the majority of them are no longer shocking, especially given that we live in the age of the Internet. However at the time of their release, these jaw dropping reveals were a huge deal - well, they were for me. Some of these moments were perhaps more surprising because I didn't have Internet access until 1998, which in itself is relatively shocking - or so kids these days tell me.

I often wonder if we didn't have access to the kind of information we do now, would games, films and TV shows appear different? Might we be on the edge of our seats more? Eagerly awaiting new releases and having absolutely no fear of spoilers?!

Speaking of spoilers, it goes without saying that if you haven't played the games I mention below then be prepared for them. So without any more pretence, here are 7 of the most shocking game reveals *SPOILERS AHEAD*:

"Why Do We Watch?": An Exclusive Excerpt From THE WALKING DEAD PSYCHOLOGY

$

With this Sunday's premiere of Fear The Walking Dead already locked into my viewing schedule, I've already started getting back into the mood by reading this book, The Walking Dead Psychology, Edited by Travis Langley and released by Sterling Publishing.

The characters of The Walking Dead live in a desolate postapocalyptic world, filled with relentless violence and death. In reality, how would such never-ending trauma affect the psyche? By understanding the psychological forces that drive the show's action, fans can better grasp this compelling fictional universe. Is the Governor a psychopath, a sociopath, or neither? What does Terror Management Theory tell us about what it means to constantly fight for survival—as Rick must? What is the emotional cost of killing a walker or even another living person? What is groupthink and how does it affect the decisions made by the people of Terminus, Woodbury, and Rick’s gang? In 19 essays from a range of esteemed contributors, a foreword by John Russo, cocreator of Night of the Living Dead, plus "Case Files" sidebars by editor Travis Langley, The Walking Dead Psychology answers these and many other questions in a way sure to fascinate the show's millions of passionate viewers.

One piece in particular, "Why Do We Watch?" by Frank Gaskill, I found to be particularly interesting, and our friends at Sterling were gracious enough to allow FOG! to share it with you.

Literally Important: Why Books Matter

$

I’ve always been a voracious reader.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved books.

As a geek writing to other geeks, this is probably not much of a revelation, but it bears stating that, for me, since probably day one, books have been an important part of my life.

By the time I entered high school, I had a small library of books all over the house. My room, which I shared with my kid brother, wasn’t big enough to house all the books I’d gotten from years of Christmas and birthdays, one offs from mom, dad or the grandparents, or books bought with my own money.

The trend continued into the college and that’s where it escalated.

A corner of author Neil Gaiman's drool-worthy home library

After all, it’s college where we’re exposed to a veritable universe of new writers, works, genres and topics and my brain (and budget) exploded. My personal library was now growing exponentially.

After college, I had a collection of books that was fairly sizeable and it was a collection of books I was proud of. It wasn’t just a trophy collection of novels consumed and philosophies digested, it was also a part of my identity.

However, after college, there came a problem and that problem was life.

THE GREAT AMERICAN DREAM MACHINE, The Birthplace For Smart, Satirical TV With a Political Bent Comes To DVD

Before "Saturday Night Live" and "The Daily Show", before the spoof-tastic films The Groove Tube and Kentucky Fried Movie came THE GREAT AMERICAN DREAM MACHINE, an irreverent, satirical weekly variety show that aired on PBS for two seasons from 1971-1972. Unlike anything ever seen on public television, the eclectic, often controversial series - an early proving ground for many top comedic talents including Chevy Chase, Albert Brooks and Charles Grodin -- combined humorous skits, drama, musical performances and political commentary in an "experimental" format and was considered Channel Thirteen's first prime-time hit, setting new records for attracting younger adult viewers to public broadcasting. And, this September, S'more Entertainment will fire up THE GREAT AMERICAN DREAM MACHINE for its eagerly-anticipated home entertainment debut in a 4-disc collector's set for $39.98srp.

PSYCHO BEACH PARTY (review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz
Produced by Virginia Biddle, Jon Gerrans,
Marcus Hu, Victor Syrmis
Written by Charles Busch
Directed by Robert Lee King
Starring Lauren Ambrose, Thomas Gibson,
Nicholas Brendon, Matt Keeslar, Charles Busch,
Beth Broderick, Kimberley Davies, Danni Wheeler,
Nick Cornish, Andrew Levitas, Amy Adams,
Kathleen Robertson, Nicholas D'Agosto

15 years ago, Psycho Beach Party was released;a campy little film was made based on Charles Busch's off-Broadway play, that blended the overwrought thrillers of the 50s, the surfer movies of the 60s and the slasher films of the 70s and 80s.

It is everything you’d want from a film with that kind of title.

And now it’s being released on Blu-ray.

I won’t even attempt to summarize the film due to the vast amount of cinematic iconic themes that it throws in there, but I will say that if you ever wanted to see a flick that featured surfing, feminism, BDSM, homoeroticism, murder, cross dressing and hell, luaus, then you’re going to want to sit down and watch this one.

Also, it has Amy Adams in it.

Before she became famous.  And she’s bottomless in it.

Some Nostalgic Words From Our Sponsors, Forever on YouTube

Like most of us in our youth, I spent quite a bit of time in front of the television; planted there by two working parents and general lack of responsibility. No complaints here – most of us experienced this.

However, unless you were born before DVR, you had to endure what so many children today never had:

Commercials of days past.

So, today, I’m going to go on YouTube, type in 80sand90s Commercials and review what I see.

First off, I’m surprised at how many of these commercials still exist. Sure, it was the time of VCRs so some of these things had to be salvaged but good goddamn; there are 144 volumes of 10 minute videos on one channel alone.

Jesus, that’s 1,440 minutes of commercials!
