FANTASTIC FOUR (review)

Review by Clay N Ferno
Produced by Gregory Goodman, Simon Kinberg,
Robert Kulzar, Hutch Parker, Matthew Vaughn
Screenplay by Simon Kinberg, Jeremy Slater, Josh Trank
Based on Fantastic Four by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby
Directed by Josh Trank
Starring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara,
Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Reg E. Cathey, Tim Blake Nelson

"The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" has once again proven — for the fourth time, really, how difficult it is to make a compelling comic book movie with Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Girl, Human Torch and The Thing.

Director Josh Trank (Chronicle) steps into a world where Bryan Singer, Matthew Vaughn and James Mangold have left their dusty footprints.

The Fox-owned Marvel movie properties are mostly good, have gotten better since X-Men First Class, but this Fantastic Four doesn't have the orange stones to retire like Hugh Jackman eventually will.

As a sci-fi movie experience it leans toward being just OK, but for comic book fans now expecting Marvel Studios quality and reverence toward the essence of Stan and Jack's 1961 creations, this movie falls flat.

FF2015 has no bite, definitely no humor besides dropping famous catch phrases, and it was more of a Dell and Samsung commercial at every turn than was Bruce Banner's blatant Beats headphone meditation or Gillette razor focus pull in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

CATCH ME DADDY (review)

Review by Joshua Gravel
Executive Produced by Hugo Heppell,
Norman Merry, Jim Mooney, Walli Ullah
Produced by Michael Elliott, Hayley Williams
Written by Daniel Wolfe, Matthew Wolfe
Directed by Daniel Wolfe
Starring Sameena Jabeen Ahmed, Gary Lewis,
Conor McCarron, Barry Nunney, Adrian Hussain,
Anwar Hussain, Ali Ahmad, Shoby Kaman, Wasim Zakir

Laila seems to be your typical slacker and casual drug user who hangs around with her boyfriend, Aaron, who seems to be a very low level street criminal.

The pair lazily goes about their day of doing nothing in particular while two separate groups of men are looking for them.

Once the stark reality of the criminal underworld and clashing cultures catches up with them the couple are on the run and seem to be making their situation worse with every decision.

Catch Me Daddy is a film that looks great, but as a first time feature filmmaker, I think Daniel Wolf let the film play out at too slow of a pace.

What should be an engaging narrative with mesmerizing long takes and photography becomes a film so slowly paced that you start to forget why things are happening.

My WEIRD SCIENCE / NATTY GANN Quirkle Deathmatch

Many of you know Meredith Salenger as the girl you had a crush on in the 80s (The Journey of Natty Gann, Dream a Little Dream) and the woman you still have a crush on today.

I was lucky enough to sit next to Mer (I totally call her by a nickname now) when we were both celebrity guests at the Days of the Dead convention in Indianapolis this year, and we became friends immediately.

Here’s the thing: I had followed her career since she was young (and I had a mad crush on her – not gonna lie), but I also had been hoping to meet her ever since I saw her absolutely dominate everyone on the tabletop gaming show Tabletop at the game Qwirkle. So I was hoping to test myself against her at Quirkle, since she is clearly the reigning champion.

By the end of the convention I had made clear to her that I was a plucky challenger coming for her title, Qwirkle-style.

Regarding Cosby and Re-Examining Cliff Huxtable

Written by Erin Maxwell

Sometimes it is difficult to separate fact from fiction. In terms of entertainment and the pop culture that surrounds us, the lines tend to blur, especially when recent facts tend to tarnish beloved childhood memories.

In the midst of the controversy that surround Bill Cosby, it can be difficult to remember the comedian as he was in the ‘80s when he so clearly held the title of the King of Primetime.

As more allegations of sexual misconduct come forward, the man himself moves further and further away from his former iconic glory as a father who used his family life as the centerpiece to his family-friendly comedy routines.

It is unknown if recent events will create a new legacy for the Cos, but what about his old legacy, The Cosby Show?

All episodes of the hit NBC laffer are available on Hulu for viewing. But should you view it?

Do they even hold up?

Double Feature Movie Show: THINGS YOU CAN’T UNSEE…AND THEY CAN’T UNSEE YOU

On July 31st, the world lost one of it’s greatest thespians.

One who could turn a phrase in a singular way that made you grin and cry at the same time.

I am speaking, of course, of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

I’m not here to tell you about the two best Roddy flicks, but that’s mainly because I’ve only seen one.

What I am here to do is tell you about a movie that goes along with his best performance.

THEY LIVE (1986)
Written and directed by John Carpenter
Based on a short story by Ray Nelson

They Live is one of those movies that everyone saw at some point, but not everybody remembers seeing. They just remember a weird movie with sunglasses. And a super long fight scene.

Piper plays Nada (that’s the name given in the credits, anyway), a drifter who stumbles upon a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the world for what it really is: run by aliens. All of our billboards are filled with secret messages. All of our leaders are skeletal aliens. And we’re all screwed.

Unless, of course, Nada can save us all.

They Live is super silly fun. It’s actually one of the most fun of Carpenter’s movies. He’s made much better films, but really only Big Trouble In Little China rivals this one for fun.

Roddy was never a great actor, but he’s perfect for the role of Nada and talks about bubble gum in ways that, before this movie, no one ever thought about. And then there’s that 5 1/2 minute fist fight with Keith David. At the time, it was the longest fist fight in cinema history…and then it was copied, blow for blow, by South Park. And it was still amazing.

Yeah. I love this movie. It may not be the greatest film ever made, but that doesn’t matter. It’s awesome. Just see it.

When it premiered in 2011, HELL ON WHEELS was credited for helping to modernize the Western genre. "Imbued with epic sweep", the series tells the story of post-Civil War America and of Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. When his journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the railroad, the lavishly-produced series gathers steam, and introduced characters and plotlines that have helped the Western drama become one of AMC's top-rated series -- and underscores just how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

Season Three of HELL ON WHEELS ended with Cullen married to a pregnant Naomi and living in a Mormon fort where the Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) was impersonating church leader, Bishop Dutson; Thomas "Doc" Durant (Colm Meaney) back in control of the Union Pacific Railroad which had successfully expanded westward to Cheyenne; and Elam (Common), gravely injured by a bear while searching for the missing Cullen. And, as HELL ON WHEELS: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON unfolds on blu-ray and DVD exclusively from Entertainment One (eOne), civilization makes its way west with the railroad, bringing with it men who attempt to do with their pens what rougher men did in seasons past with their guns. Conflict between government and big business, ranchers, homesteaders and the railroad will continue to define the drama as all of those interests compete with one another for control of Cheyenne, Wyoming, the "Magic City of the Plains", and the most important railroad hub in the country.

After the jump, check out an exclusive clip focusing on Elam Ferguson, later known by the Comanche alias "Bear Killer"(played by Common) and find out how to win one of three copies on Blu-ray!

Directed by Antonia Bogdanovich
Starring Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Rebecca Romijn,
Ashley Hamilton, Luke Kleintank, Tobin Bell,

Warren Emerson is a gambler, a drunk, and father to two sons who have become career petty criminals to pay the rent, cover Warren’s debts, and keep food in the house. Their main grift is having the younger son Samuel perform Shakespeare on the street as the older brother Beckett pick pockets the audience.

When Beckett gets involved with a counterfeiting operation in an attempt to quickly get them out of a loan sharks debt a series of poor decisions and double crosses ensure an unhappy ending for all parties involved.

Phantom Halo is certainly a slick looking professionally made film; there unfortunately just isn’t anything that elevates it above the crowd.

Cinematographer Gavin Kelly did a great job considering that most of the films locations could have easily been generically forgettable urban locales yet the film maintains an overall style that captivates the viewer.

Michael Schultz's GREASED LIGHTNING Starring Richard Pryor: The One That Got Away

Written by Generoso Fierro

Michael Schultz was one of the most successful African-American directors of the 1970s. Starting out in television as a director for the early part of the decade, Schultz graduated to the big screen in 1974 directing Diana Sands in Honeybaby, Honeybaby,  a low budget action film that was to be Sands’ last film before she passed away in 1973. Schultz immediately returned with the successful 1975 film, Cooley High, a entertaining high school comedy/drama that many refer to as the “Black American Graffiti.”

In 1976, Schultz hit it big with Car Wash, one of the many “workplace comedies” of the 1970s that was inspired by Altman’s M*A*S*H, and a film that also produced a number one soundtrack for the disco era. That film contained about eight minutes of a rising comic named Richard Pryor, who sometime between filming and release developed into a star after nine years of small parts (with the notable exception of one, The Mack) in over a dozen films.

Schultz rushed out to cast Pryor in the lead role, and so in 1977, Schultz cast Pryor in a US remake of Lina Wertmuller’s The Seduction Of Mimi, called Which Way Is Up, converting the eternal schlubby Mimi of Wertmuller’s film into Leroy, a California grape picker who accidentally becomes a union leader. It is easily one of Pryor’s best performances as he (Pryor) plays several different characters in the same way that he could do onstage, with total commitment and at the drop of a hat.

While Which Way Is Up was filming, another successful African-American director from that decade, Melvin Van Peebles, contacted Pryor. Melvin wanted to make a biopic about Wendell Scott, a World War Two veteran, moonshine runner, and a stock car racer on the Dixie Circuit who would become the first African-American to drive for NASCAR. With another opportunity to play the lead, Pryor was onboard for the project, and the film would be fittingly titled, Greased Lightning.

Unfortunately, somewhere during the casting process, Van Peebles and the producers of Greased Lightning began to have artistic differences, and Van Peebles was dismissed, leaving the film without a director. Eager to play Scott, Pryor asked Schultz while making Which Was Is Up to helm the project, and Schultz agreed. Shortly after the wrap of Which Way Is Up, Schultz and Pryor began work on Greased Lightning.

A lot of talent was attached to Greased Lightning.

Sequart Announces HISTORY OF PLANET OF THE APES COMICS

$

Sequart Organization is proud to announce the publication of The Sacred Scrolls: Comics on the Planet of the Apes, edited by Rich Handley and Joseph F. Berenato.

Since the 1970s, the Planet of the Apes franchise has frequently delved into the world of comics. Some stories have made the Lawgiver proud, while others have brought shame to Ape City. In the comics arena, not all apes are created equal — but for fans, that’s half the fun of reading them.

More than 150 POTA comics have been published during the past four decades, from Gold Key, Marvel, Power Records, Brown Watson Books, Editorial Mo. Pa. Sa., Malibu Graphics, Dark Horse, Mr. Comics, and BOOM! Studios. Writers have explored the settings, concepts, and characters from the films (and occasionally the TV series), while introducing an array of new characters and scenarios. Back stories have been revealed, plot holes filled in, and histories extrapolated upon. The comics have employed multiple genres and styles, taking readers to distant villages, ruined cities, and oceanic civilizations — and we’ve even seen the Apes battle alien invaders from War of the Worlds and Alien Nation. It’s been quite the madhouse, to be sure. But by and large, the Apes comics have remained true to creator Pierre Boulle’s simian spirit.

The new Fantastic Four feature film is bombing at the box office not because of “miscast/race” issues, but because audiences are growing weary of the edgy, dingy, cynical and miserable characterizations that have infiltrated the superhero set on the big screen (and small).  Super Friends where are you?

According to E! News, Married…With Children may be following the retread path of Full(er) House with a new updated TV series version of itself.

MWC cast members Christina Applegate, Katey Sagal, Ed O'Neill and David Faustino in 2014

David Faustino, who starred as son Bud,had teased the news at the recent L.A. premiere of the new Vacation motion picture, which stars his former tv sibling Christina Applegate.  “They’re working out some legal issues that we hope they work out,” Faustino said.  But a source within Sony studios, Married’s proprietor, denied that any such reunion is in the works.

Was THE SOPRANOS Actually 'Prestige TV'?

$

We’re apparently living in a golden age of TV where the characters, themes and plots on shows are more complex and morally ambiguous than movies, where anti-heroes reign supreme.

And this all started with The Sopranos.

At least, that’s what we’re told.

True Detective just finished its second season and I cannot think of any show that was so exemplifies how so much of so called prestige TV is obsessed with its concept (everything is about the plot and it’s incredibly dense and convoluted), it’s feature film production values (everything from the action sequences, to cinematography, to the variety of locations), and the use of Hollywood stars (such as using David Morse in a bit part just because).

While much current and recent prestige TV certainly deserves high marks for its mise en scène and general ambition, shows ultimately fall flat on substance: Boardwalk Empire, Marco Polo, House of Cards (Season 3), Homeland (Season 2 and 3), and True Blood.

I don’t see how we have The Sopranos to thank for these shows — it bares little resemblance to most of what’s followed it.

COP CAR (review)

Review by Sharon Knolle
Produced by Cody Ryder, Alicia Van Couvering,
Sam Bisbee, Andrew Kortschak, Jon Watts
Written by Jon Watts, Christopher Ford
Directed by Jon Watts
Starring Kevin Bacon, James Freedson-Jackson,
Hays Wellford, Camryn Manheim, Shea Whigham

Cop Car gets maximum mileage out of this simple premise: Two boys take an abandoned police car for a joyride.

Director and cowriter Watts (who based the story on a recurring dream he had as a child) was inspired by the Coen Brothers' first film, Blood Simple, and he hits the mark squarely in that darkly funny, brutal territory.

Clocking in at a brisk 86 minutes, the films begins with two 10-year-old boys – Travis (James Freedson-Jackson) and Harrison (Hays Wellford), who've run away from home. As they traverse the empty fields of a desolate-looking Colorado Springs, they swear and poke sticks into a snake hole, delighting in all things they shouldn't be doing.

Their small rebellions grow monumentally bigger when they stumble on a police car parked in the middle of nowhere. Once they realize there's no policeman in sight, they dare each other just to touch the car; soon they're playing driver in the front seat and when they discover the car keys, they can't resist taking it for a ride.

Of course, they have no idea what they've set in motion.
