ESCOBAR: PARADISE LOST (review)

Review by Sharon Knolle
Produced by Dimitri Rassam,
Frederique Dumas, Jerome Seydoux
Written and Directed by Andrea Di Stefano
Starring Benicio Del Toro, Josh Hutcherson,
Claudia Traisac, Brady Corbet,
Carlos Bardem, Ana Girardot

Benicio Del Toro is thoroughly convincing as the notorious Colombian druglord Pablo Escobar in this biopic from first-time director Andrea Di Stefano.

The focus, however, is on Nick (Josh Hutcherson), a young man who has no idea what he's getting into when he falls for Escobar's niece Maria (Claudia Trisac). Before he realizes what kind of man Escobar is, he's already part of his inner circle and finds it impossible to escape.

That's a compelling storyline and Hutcherson makes a sympathetic and likable leading man; The Hunger Games co-star proves he's able to carry a film, but the final act is unfortunately melodramatic and far-fetched.

While Escobar was very real and his brutal reign well-documented, the character of Nick is entirely fictitious. He serves to illustrate Escobar's ruthlessness – initially disguised as benign leadership – but as Nick's situation gets more desperate, so does the plot.

COOL SHIRTS: A Look At T-Shirt Offerings From NerdKungFu.com!

By Stefan Blitz

There's no doubt that the boldest and most personal fashion statement anyone can make is in one's selection of t-shirt.  Personally, I love them.  It's an opportunity to show the world what pop culture I care about, a wonderful flashback to the past and a fantastic way to initiate any nerd discussion.

For this installment of Cool Shirts, I took a look at some of the shirts from Nerd Kung Fu, which might very well have the largest selection of pop culture t-shirts that I've ever seen.  Among their latest additions are over dozens of new designs centered on Bruce Lee, Jaws, Tremors, Jurassic Park, Constantine, Curious George, Gotham, Mr. Rogers, Macho Man Randy Savage, Sons of Anarchy, Child's Play and more! They also carry shirts in sizes small through 7XL and the site is filled with lots of nerdy trivia on the history of t-shirts!

Nerd Kung Fu isn't satisfied carrying just a huge t-shirt selection.  They are also currently selling a wide array of posters and a number of geek-centric ephemera including coffee mugs, shot glasses, pint glasses, blankets, wallets, buttons, magnets, playing cards, hoodies and much more.

There is something for virtually any nerdcentric provocation.

These are a few of my recent favorites.

TERMINATOR GENISYS (review)

Review by Benn Robbins
Produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg
Written by Laeta Kalogridis, Patrick Lussier
Based on Characters by
James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd
Directed by Alan Taylor
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger,
Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke,
Jai Courtney, Lee Byung-hun,
J. K. Simmons, Matt Smith

I feel like this summer’s crop of remakes and sequels, deserve an actual name.

Let's call them remakequels, shall we?

This crop of remakequels this summer are not what the moviegoing audience asked for, but they are what we deserve.

They are the logical evolution and endgame for Hollywood as a whole and I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.

Since audiences weren't demanding, or more importantly interested in sub-par remakequels, Hollywood assumed this was an mistake and moved forward greenlighting any intellectual property that might have a potential audience.

And I have this itching suspicion that the current executives in charge are part of my generation; they remember when movies were great.

They remember when the Spielberg’s and Zemeckis' and Lucas’ and the Cameron’s of the industry were bringing us such enjoyment and pleasure every summer and they LOVED those films, too.

Like you and I, they devoured them up.

Unfortunately they are now in charge and want those movies made whether they should be or not and so we are getting what I am deeming as the last spastic throws of a floundering industry not quite sure how to reinvent itself… so they don’t.

They just rehash and feed off the nostalgia of the movie going audiences.

Right now, we have an entire generation of nostalgic filmmakers who grew up on films made by guys who grew up on films made by guys who just made films. They weren’t “taught”; they just learned by making movies, the old fashion way.

Confusing?

Exactly.

Welcome to the third age of film makers.

For the very first time we have a pure generation of filmmakers who learned to make films, not in the real world of making films with other filmmakers but were “taught” how to make films in schools  and classrooms by people who may or may not have learned how to make films before they taught how films are made.

But they have passion.

And really passion is all you need.

That and a ridiculously huge budget.

And connections.

And a nostalgia starved studio head.

If you have seen Jurassic World, you know what I am talking about.

That movie was ridiculous. Not like bad, ridiculous but ridiculous like dinosaur whisperer meets Sharknado ridiculous. Wholly entertaining and the the most stupid film you have ever seen.

We have come a full 180 degrees from so bad its is good, to so good it is horrendous, to so horrendous it is sublime. If you came out of Jurassic World and thought,” That movie was the stupidest film I have ever watched” and you would go see it again then you know what I am talking about.

Well then welcome to Terminator Genisys.

INFINITELY POLAR BEAR (review)

0

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Wallace Wolodarsky, Benji Kohn,
Bingo Gubelmann, Sam Bisbee,
Galt Niederhoffer, Austin Stark
Written and Directed by Maya Forbes
Starring Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana,
Imogene Wolodarsky, Ashley Aufderhe

Infinitely Polar Bear is an outstandingly difficult and touching story presented with humor and sharp poignancy by Maya Forbes. Her directorial debut is an autobiographical story of her experience as a young girl growing up with her sister under the care of their manic-depressive father. In the 1960’s when “everyone was having breakdowns” little was done to adequately treat the disorder thus leaving coping and maintenance up to the individuals.

Mark Ruffalo is Cameron Stuart, the bi-polar star of Infinitely Polar Bear. He’s exquisitely charming as well as heartbreakingly oppositional, and given the responsibility of raising his two daughters solo as his wife, Maggie (Zoe Saldana) completes her MBA in New York – the rest of the family lives in Boston.

Really though, the story illustrates how the girls raise their mentally ill father, rather than the reverse.

But truly, it’s a tandem effort of patience and understanding.

Children have been playing and collecting toy soldiers since… well, a very long time.

Modern children, mainly boys, collected little plastic armies since the 1950s. Before that collecting of toy soldiers was not only something children did, but adult hobbyist.

Soldiers depicting great battles in history, made from lead, sawdust, composite.

All of which fired up their imagination. Versions of the toy soldier date back as far as ancient Egypt!

But the type we’re most familiar with are the classic British-made lead soldiers, and the more modern plastic soldiers and armies made by companies like Marx.

The era of the toy soldier is gone or so it seems. It was something my father, or his father would collect.

A hobby from another time that is gone with the age… or has it just evolved?

Moving Beyond The Big Two: Leaving MARVEL and DC Behind

0
0

A friend recently complained to me that he’s not at all happy with the direction of either Marvel or DC. The stories leave him cold, the characters seem all be in the process of going places he’s not happy seeing them taken and neither universe really seems like home to him.

“It upsets me to see these characters I’ve loved for so long being taken to places I hate so much.”

Anyone who’s been a fan of comics for longer than five minutes knows the feeling. We’ve all seen both Marvel and DC do things with characters we love that are, to us at least, revolting. It happens.

So I asked my friend what else he was reading and I’m pretty sure I caught him by complete surprise.

“What do you mean, ‘what else am I reading?’”

“Well,” I said. “Marvel and DC are clearly not your bag right now. So what is?”

And that’s when he admitted that he only reads comics from Marvel and DC.

Let me be clear; I’m not going to begrudge anyone for reading the things they read (for the most part). Like what ya like and read what ya like. If all you want to read are the adventure of, sigh, Deadpool, then by God let that Deadpool freak flag fly (just don’t expect me to fly it with you).

But the moment you stop liking that thing you like, then maybe it’s time for an exit strategy.

I say all this because we kind of live in a golden age of Big Two alternatives, and even if you are a DC devotee or a Marvel zombie, the thought of someone not venturing into some of the absolutely amazing things being done at publishers like Image, Dark Horse, IDW and, hell, even Archie Comics is mindblowing to me.

In fact, there’s so much non-Big Two variety out there that’s actually worth reading that I sometimes have trouble supporting it all.
