Fresh upon the heel of the this month’s release of Tarzan: Return to Pal-ul-don, Altus Press is proud to announce the latest entry in its Wild Adventures of Doc Savage series. The Sinister Shadow marks a double landmark. This is Doc Savage #200. And to commemorate this exciting event, writer Will Murray, collaborating once again with Doc Savage’s original writer, the late Lester Dent,  has received permission from Conde Nast to pit the Man of Bronze against Street & Smith's other iconic pulp hero, none other than Master of Darkness, The Shadow!

The Sinister Shadow takes place in 1933 when both pulp heroes are in the formative stages of their careers. It begins when millionaire Lamont Cranston is kidnapped by the minions of the master kidnapper known only as the Funeral Director. Abducted at the same time is attorney Ham Brooks, one of Doc’s Savage’s assistants.

The daring daylight crime puts both Doc and The Shadow on to the trail of the Funeral Director. It also brings them into open conflict when Doc Savage takes Shadow agent and known underworld figure Cliff Marsland prisoner, with the intention of shipping him off to Doc’s infamous Crime College for brain-altering rehabilitation!

This post brought to you by eBay. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Forces of Geek.

The term "Comic Con" has ubiquitously replaced "comic" for "pop culture".

As the largest shows like San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con have expanded their focus to film and television, audiences and attendees have grown enormously, easily bringing in audiences of over 100,000 attendees.

With so many people attending, shows are getting larger and as a result, at times, harder to navigate. We've put together a list of must haves to fully prep for any and every single one of your Comic Con experiences.

Double Feature Movie Show: LONELY YOUNG VAMPIRES

$

Not too long ago, I saw a film that I really didn’t know anything about going in.

It’s the first of this double feature and it brought to mind the second film.

Vampires are sort of used up as a subject, but these two films show that there’s still some life in them, yet.

A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (2014)
Written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour
Based on a graphic novel by Ana Lily Amirpour

Taking the indie world by storm is this little film that purports to be the first vampire film to take place in the Middle East (although it was filmed in California). On the surface, it’s about Arash (Arash Marandi), a young Iranian man who can’t quite find his place in the world. He’s lost his car to the local small-time gangster and the ladies have no interest in him at all. As he’s walking the streets one night, he sees a mysterious girl (Sheila Vand) on a skateboard and instantly falls in love. There’s obviously something interesting about her, but he can’t quite put his finger on it.

As she leaves him, she encounters someone she deems worthy…and kills him.

What the movie is really about is atmosphere and feelings. Arash and The Girl have many encounters, but they don’t “hook up” in any physical way, only emotional and, if possible, spiritual. There are lots of killings, but not tons of gore. The “story,” as it were, is really just an excuse to have some amazing black and white cinematography, interesting visuals and characters and an overwhelming feeling of loneliness in a small Iranian town. Jim Jarmusch is probably very proud.

There is one other big point to the film: Respect women and you’ll be a good person…and be left alive. Many, if not all, of The Girl’s victims are disrespectful of women. The Girl gets the revenge on these guys that all women want to get. She’s one girl who won’t be taken advantage of, and she won’t allow any others to be, either.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is a beautiful film in a lot of ways. It’s streaming right now. Check it out.

iam8bit, the retro videogame-themed art extravaganza, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a legendary exhibit coinciding with E3, opening June 18, 2015 at the iam8bit gallery in Los Angeles. This year’s show puts the spotlight on more than 150 unique pieces inspired by classic videogames, created by 100 artists from around the globe, including Luke Chueh, Thomas Han, Bob Dob, Ashley Wood, Nicole Gustaffson, Ken Wong, Ruben Ireland, Nan Lawson, Cory Schmitz, JC Richard, Jude Buffum, Rich Pellegrino, Travis Chen, We Buy Your Kids and Mike Mitchell, among many other tremendous talents.

“Videogames are just as important to culture as movies, music, books and beyond. iam8bit strives to pay loving homage to the incredible imagination that was present in retro games, with an eye toward immortalizing the characters and worlds we love,” said Jon M. Gibson, co-curator of the show. “We’ve been doing this for 10 years now, which in art world years, means iam8bit is about due for a cyborg hip replacement. We’re very excited to have earned such fanfare from the community.”

iam8bit originated the themed pop culture art show movement with the inaugural iam8bit show in 2005, igniting a worldwide trend that, a decade later, inspired hundreds of galleries and brands to remix nostalgia and fanfare. But rather than remain complacent, iam8bit continues to innovate, having grown exponentially into an international art showcase that brings together imaginative works blending art, games and pop culture, constantly exposing the work of talented artists in the community.
Prints and original paintings, sculptures and other works will also be available to purchase at the iam8bit online store store.iam8bit.com. For more information, please visit the iam8bit gallery page.

After the jump check out some amazing examples of work on display at the show.

I recently did some work for a hair salon, who are a bunch of really creative girls with a talent for the avant-garde and stylized look.

I asked them about where their inspiration came from for their more themed photo shoots and was surprised to find that as well as celebrity fashions, and trends shown in magazines and fashion shows, a lot of idea come from characters in films and TV shows.

So I probed a little further and asked them to tell me about their favourite characters and their hair.

Just when you thought the zombie genre was close to death (un-death?) comes this fantastic little short, Waterborne.

This short (which is also being used as a proof of concept for a feature film currently in development), comes from producer Marisa Brown, co-writer Richard Barcaricchio and co-writer/director Ryan Coonan and was filmed in Numurkah, Austrailia.

Here's the official description:
Years of drought, flood, and fluctuating environmental conditions have taken their toll the struggling country town of Numurkah. When a local ranger in a small country town finds an unidentified algae overwhelming the water supply, he knows that something's not right. But it's not until the sun goes town that he discovers the true extent of the danger - it seems the town is about to experience the effects of a mysterious infection that turns not only humans – but animals too – into zombies.

'Waterborne’ was financed through a combination of crowdfunding and personal investment, and contains the first ever zombie kangaroo to appear on screen. Australian wildlife has never been so terrifying...

Waterborne has played at numerous festivals across the globe and now can finally be seen by everyone.  Check it out after the jump.

The Retro Report: Keep Guests On The Couch, A Heavy FLO, Bring Back a Little Bit Country and a Little Bit Rock N' Roll & More!

While ABC never gave Life With Lucy a fair shake back in 1986 on Saturday nights, they could make up for it by bringing back Donny & Marie to Friday nights today, and an all-new Dark Shadows (with cameos from those few-remaining cast members of the original DS) back to daytime every day (with a combination of the old and an all-new storylines).

Hiroshi Koizumi, who performed in Toho Studio's initial Godzilla movies, succumbed to pneumonia at age 88 on May 31.

Kojak debuted on CBS around the same time that Kodiak and Kolchak: The Night Stalker debuted on ABC, some of which had to be sponsored (if not filmed!) by Kodak.

The first two years of Happy Days, the first three years of The King of Queens and the first five seasons of Seinfeld are pure gold.

The remaining years for each show, not so much.

Flo, the sequel to Alice, had way too many characters.

Carol Burnett and Tim Conway should do a new sitcom together.

Reba was the last great, family sitcom, and Bob Schieffer was the last great network news anchor.

Talk shows were more fun when the audience was kept in the dark (literally), all the guests stayed (on the sofa) for the entire show, and the hosts actually let their guests talk. Merv, Mike, Johnny and Dinah – where are you?!

NBC's The Tonight Show (12/5/75) featuring host Johnny Carson, and guests Michael Caine, Sean Connery and David Brenner

Peace to lovers of all things classic.
