David Gallaher and Steve Ellis, the award-winning creative team behind digital hits HIGH MOON and BOX 13 are teaming up with industry-leading kids graphic novel publisher Papercutz to bring their webcomic sensation THE ONLY LIVING BOY to bookstores and libraries everywhere.

The publisher has announced a multi-volume deal with Gallaher and Ellis’ Bottled Lightning Studio, brokered by Dara Hyde at the Hill Nadell Literary Agency, that will see the webcomic collected into a series of paperback and hardcover volumes beginning in March 2016. Publishing of the print collections will begin with a 72 page first volume entitled “Prisoners of the Patchwork Planet” set to arrive in March 2016. Plans call for subsequent books to be released on a regular schedule with the entire story eventually collected in six volumes.

THE ONLY LIVING BOY tells the story of 12-year old Erik Farrell, who runs away from home only to find himself without his memory, stranded on a patchwork planet with danger lurking around every corner. Every day is a struggle to survive. Erik quickly allies himself with Morgan, a mermaid warrior and Thea, a teenage princess from a mysterious insect race. DARK STAR: H.R. GIGER'S WORLD (review)

Review by Dean Galanis
Produced by Marcel Hoehn
Written and Directed by Belinda Sallin
Featuring: H.R. Giger, Leslie Barany, Sandra Beretta,
Mia Bonzanigo, Tom Gabriel Fischer, Stanislav Grof,
Andreas J. Hirsch, Müggi III, Paul Tobler,
Carmen Scheifele de Vega, Marco Witzig

If you’re a fan of artist H.R. Giger’s work or if you have even a passing interest in art and artists, Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World is essential viewing.

Belinda Sallin’s documentary feature is not a straightforward, linear biopic-style film.

It is, however, an immersive, hugely enjoyable peek into the process and psyche of the supremely talented Giger, the Swiss artist best known for designing the creatures of Alien and Species.

There’s an interesting, almost low-key thriller vibe to the direction of Dark Star.

We get some fly-on-the-wall scenes with Giger puttering around his house, working on projects, eating with friends and family, as well as extended shots of Giger’s work, including a very cool variation on a kiddie train ride in his back yard.  These scenes are complemented by the intriguing and effective score by Peter Scherer, which, at times, evokes vintage Goblin.  There are many evocative shots of Giger sans dialogue, during which we’re invited to guess what the man is thinking.

Lest you think that this is some lazy, “you do the work” film, be assured Sallin knows what she’s doing, and we get many fascinating anecdotes about Giger’s life and career.

Our National Movie: As American as Womp Rats and Blue Milk

The United States has a national animal, a national floral emblem, and even a national march.

States take this even farther; the official state bread of Alabama is cornbread, of course.

At this point, the national film of the United States is all but in name Star Wars. We just “celebrated” May the Fourth, the films’ unofficially holiday. While it’s yet another made up holiday with corporate backing, like National Pie Day, every year more people and the media pay attention to 5/4.

And why not? Everyone loves Star Wars.

But Star Wars is the least likely movie to become so engrained in the American psyche.

Forty years later, it just gets more and more popular even though there hasn’t been a good film in the franchise since 1980.

Bracing for Summer 2015 in THE AGE OF ULTRA

Despite a strong box-office weekend, much has been written, reported and speculated about Avengers: Age of Ultron, and not all of it from the pen of Joss Whedon.

While I respect everyone's positive opinions about the movie, including this recent one from our very own Benn Robbins, it just didn't work for me.

I'm not about to dwell on about the film too much, but after sitting through a barrage of trailers and then the aforementioned feature, I am compelled to complain.

Once again we're being bombarded with big budget summer bonanzas at the box office. But this year in particular either I'm getting way too old and cranky, or the line-up is all at once overwhelming and underwhelming.

Take for example this Summer's starter film, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

LITTLE BOY (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Eduardo Verástegui, Leo Severino
Written by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde, Pepe Portillo
Directed by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde
Starring Jakob Salvati, Emily Watson, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa,
Michael Rapaport, David Henrie, Ben Chaplin,
Ted Levine, Abraham Benrubi, Tom Wilkinson

Keeping a close-up shot on the pouty lips of an adorable little blonde boy does nothing to hide the shockingly offensive nature of Alejandro Monteverde’s film Little Boy.

The plot is supposed to be about a perpetually bullied short little boy, Pepper (Jakob Salvati), who tries to use “magic” in order to ensure his father’s survival of World War II. What it actually is: the glorification of the decimation of a city resting on a pun – “Little Boy” was the codename for the nuke that destroyed Hiroshima.

Guess who the town praised and celebrated for “ending” the war and “saving” people?

Yeah. Little Boy Pepper.

Using laughs and smiles to celebrate a shitty memory, Monteverde attempts to spin the tragedy of WWII into a cutsie story of a naïve boy who’s enabled to believe that magic might save his father from dying.

Monster of The Month: Squishes (aka Michigan Bigfoot)

One of the adventures I had while writing my new book Monster Hunters was traveling to central Michigan to meet Bigfoot researcher Jim Sherman, a field representative for the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO).

If that sounds familiar, it’s because members of the BFRO star in the hit reality show Finding Bigfoot.

Monster Hunters author Tea Krulos (left) and Jim Sherman of the BFRO.

Jim had been contacted by a couple who owned a farm (I gave them the aliases “Samantha” and “Ivy” in the book, and referred to their farm and surrounding land as “Isabella,” the name of the county it was located in). They told him that they had been experiencing a lot of strange things—frightening howling and growling, rocks being thrown at their house, things being moved around the farmyard, and unusual footprints.

The couple had nicknamed these mystery creatures “Squishes,” a play on the word Sasquatch, and the title of my chapter on my experiences at Isabella.

Boredom Brought On By Toliets: GREEN EGGS AND MAAKIES

    By Lily Fierro

Green Eggs and Maakies contains Millionaire’s weekly comic strips in his signature lewd style and tone.

Outrageously vulgar with a few glimmers of comedy, the collected strips in Green Eggs and Maakies certainly represent a crudeness uncommon in today’s independent comic book world, but the novelty (or rather nostalgia, since Maakies’ shocking indiscreetness is not too far off from that style that Robert Crumb made his signature) wears off pretty quickly, making the collection somewhat painful and unexciting to complete.

Drinky Crow, the trademark character of Maakies, makes plenty of appearances and says more than a lion’s share of upsetting and insolent things in the company of Millionare’s motley crew of foul-mouthed and foul-intentioned characters. All of the characters deliver some humor every now and then, but after a while, all of their actions and dialog feel overburdened and simply shocking and revolting for really no reason; the series feels like vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity.

Tabletop Day and That Time I Never Wargamed with Grand Moff Tarkin

    $

    By Ilan Mitchell-Smith

April 11th was International Tabletop Day– the holiday devoted to playing games with friends on a table (as opposed to on a computer or console). Generally speaking, everyone has a really good time playing games on Tabletop Day, and that’s why it’s one of my favorite holidays.

As one of the older people on the table top gaming scene, I think this day might mean more to me than to some of the younger gamers out there.

Allow me to explain why by telling you about the time I never played wargames with Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars.

I was an actor in the 1980s (people remember me most for Weird Science), and I ended up doing a number of movies and TV spots before I retired from acting to go to school in the early 1990s. One time I booked a part on a show called The Equalizer, starring Edward Woodward (this was the show that inspired the 2014 film starring Denzel Washington).

Woodward and I weren’t in many scenes together, but we spent a fair amount of time together on the set, waiting for our scenes, eating lunch, going to cast meetings, etc. Our interactions with each other were cordial, friendly, boring. In short, we interacted as two people do when they have absolutely nothing in common and are forced to share space for a while.

The thing is, Edward Woodward and I had lots in common, and I never knew it.

Apparently, Edward Woodward was a miniature wargamer, meaning that he played wargames with small, hand-painted miniatures. He had even hosted a BBC television show about the hobby

I was also a miniature wargamer. I was just getting into Warhammer, I was an avid D&D player, and I was actively painting gaming miniatures for two or three other games as well. I spent all of my downtime on the set cloistered in my changing room, reading wargames rules and painting miniatures.

I never told anyone about this hobby, though, and I carried these miniatures and game books onto the set in closed bags so that no one would see me doing it or ask me about it.

The reason that I was so private about my gaming hobby was that gamers were, in some very real ways, ostracized in the 1980s.
