THR reports that director Guillermo del Toro will produce the animated film Day of the Dead.

The film returns del Toro to his Mexican roots, as the film is described as a Romeo & Juliet style love story set against the Day of the Dead holiday.  Music plays an important role in the film so producers are hoping to find an international star for the soundtrack.

Jorge R. Butierrez, the co-creator of El Tigre, will direct the film as del Toro is booked solid for quite a long time by projects like Pacific Rim. Butierrez also wrote the script with Doug Langdale, another writer on El Tigre.

The film's release is expected in fall 2014.

TV Casting : ANIMAL KINGDOM, RAISING HOPE, NEW NORMAL, GOLDEN BOY

Today in the TV roundup Vet's get cast, Golden Boy's loose their sheen, California Gurls go to Prison, and gays have a baby.

Did I catch your interest with one of those thing? Let me clear it up now. Animal Kingdom, the House-is-a-vet-now comedy has cast two comedians. Ryan Philippe has dropped out of the project formerly known as Golden Boy, Katy Perry will play a prison inmate on Raising Hope, and New Normal, a show about a gay couple having a surrogate child, is finished with casting. Read on my friends for even more details.

Deadline reports that Tyler Labine and Bobby Lee will be joining the cast of the House-with-animals series Animal Kingdom. The single-camera comedy at NBC already stars Justin Kirk.  Labine is set to play Dr. Doug Jackson a veterinarian and friend of Kirk's Dr. George Coleman, also a vet. Lee has the role of Dr. Kim, another vet with a penchant for gambling and partying. Anthony and Joe Russo are set to direct with a script from Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka.

According to The Hollywood Reporters, the untitled cop drama pilot from Greg Berlanti and Nicholas Wootton has lost its lead. Yes, it's true, Ryan Phillippe has dropped out of the CBS project with no hard feelings. He is currently filming for Damages in which he plays into a major arc in the final season of the show. In the project once called Golden Boy he would would have been a cop that goes from officer to police commissioner very fast. With Chi McBride, Kevin Alejandro and Stella Maeve all in the cast, the search now starts for a replacement for Phillippe.

Huffington Post says Katy Perry will have a role in an upcoming episode of Raising Hope. The pop star is set to play a prison attendant who claims to be a friend from Sabrina's past. Perry noted that "Shannon Woodward is my best friend. She then said how she got the role saying "“A couple weeks ago, I was home, just toasting up a frozen chicken fillet when she called me up and asked if I wanted to do something 'fun' for a change ... I thought, 'Sure, I have nothing else to do, and I like chillin' with my best friend.' ... I hope [creator Greg Garcia] is not secretly sabotaging my potential future career by type-casting me in the role of just a looker, so that I would never be able to play anything more challenging."

TVline reports that The New Normal has cast both of the leads now that Justin Bartha is set to play Andrew Rannells husband. the sitcom pilot from Glee creator Ryan Murphy will see Book of Mormon's Rannells, and Hangover actor Bartha playing a gay couple that lives with the surrogate that's helping them have a baby of their own. Georgi King will play the surrogate with Ellen Barkin set to play her grandmother. Murphy will be directing the pilot and acting as executive producer.

The trailers today aren't really spectacular, though one of them will hopefully surprise you.

First up is the next movie in the Ice Age franchise, more funny times with the squirrely character Scrat. This time its a parody of The Artist. Moving on is a new trailer for another franchise that should have died long ago. American Reunion is set to have the characters from the original return 10 years later to realize that they haven't really changed that much. And for the last trailer today I will only give you the title Dead Sushi. Go forth and watch yonder trailers.

Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

Ray Romano, Jeremy Renner, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Wedge, John Leguizamo, and Aziz Ansari, Nick Frost, Joy Behar, JB Smoove, Alan Tudyk, Heather Morris, Josh Gad, Kunal Nayyar, Alain Chabat, and hip/hop artist Nicki Minaj. Ice Age: Continental Drift opens in 3D on July 13th.

In the comedy “American Reunion,” all the “American Pie” characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship. Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Seann William Scott, Mena Suvari, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge, Eugene Levy, Natasha Lyonne, and Shannon Elizabeth all return to the cast.

“American Reunion” hits theaters on April 6, 2012.

Horror cult director Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl, Karate-Robo Zaborgar) returns for the appropriately titled film Dead Sushi. As exploitatively stated in the trailer, you can expect to see "Sushi Action!", "Sushi Erotica!" and "Sushi Violence!".  The cast include martial arts actress Rina Takeda (High Kick Girl) and Shigeru Matsuzaki.

Transformers writer Ehren Kruger is a busy man right now with two new projects. One called Invertigo with Sony, and the other being Disney's explorers movie, Matterhorn.

Kruger, who wrote the last two Transformers movies and is also working on the next one, is set to write for a still untitled adventure film with Disney. The Hollywood Reporter says that the project has expanded beyond the Matterhorn. The other project is being kept very secret, Variety only reporting that Sony has picked up Kruger's script for Invertigo.

Kruger wrote the screenplay for Invertigo along with Bradley Cramp. No details about the plot are known at this point, and even the logline is being kept under wraps. Daniel Bobker will be executive producing along with Cramp and Kruger. Neal Moritz, the man who brought the project to Sony will be producing.

Director Brian Beletic who will be making his debut with Disney's explorer project has already seen script drafts from Jason Dean Hall, but Kruger's version will be produced by Justin Springer(Tron Legacy, Prom).

At the center of the story is five young adventurers who travel to Alps for "mysterious reasons and face Yetis that guard a secret." Among the characters in the group are an action sports guy, a travel guide, cartographer, archeologist, and an escape artist.

While the project was originally just associated with the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland, the scope of the project has widened and the studio is teaming with Brain Farm Cinema, a production company known from filming extreme sports.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S3E20: Talisman

$

Once again, the Kawatche Caves cough up an ancient artifact with ties to Clark’s heritage, prompting in a Luthor pissing contest to see who gets to the truth first and a lot of stunted, obscure ramblings from a Native American elder.

Those caves sure are kooky that way.

The Random:
1. We should consider doing a drinking game every time someone or something explodes or is otherwise injured in the caves. Just for fun. And alcoholism.

2. You know Pete’s feeling down when he turns down covering the girls’ gymnastics match. Don’t worry, Pete, I’ve got you covered on this one. You take it easy.

3. All right, truck explosion! We hadn’t seen a nice one in a while.

“Don’t worry about him, Jeremiah. White boy’s crazy.”

The Awesome:
1. Clark’s “Oh crap” expression when he finds out Jeremiah can’t be hurt by Kryptonite is priceless. It’s then wiped off when he’s decked across the room.

2. It’s nice to see Clark able to cut loose and have a nice comic book style throwdown for a change.

3. We may know the answer, but the intentionally ambiguous “reveal” of which Luthor will become Clark’s arch-nemesis is done in such a way that it almost makes you think they’re taking this in a different direction than we’re used to. It’s even better when Lex suggests maybe the real villain is Numan and that he should be stopped.

So, whichever one grabs the glowing phallic object…wins? Uh, not it.”

The WTF?!:
1. Jeremiah Kill the White Devil smashes open some cookware and uncovers a magical blade that starts glowing and Lionel’s security detail just stands there with their hands in their pockets? No wonder LuthorCorp is infiltrated every nine minutes.

2. So Lana wants to leave for Paris, but she doesn’t want Lex to sell the Talon, even though he has the business acumen to know what’s profitable and what’s not and, oh yeah, she’s planning on not even being there to run it anymore.

3. How do Lex and Lionel see pretty much nothing during Clark’s fight with Jeremiah, or just accept that the blade falls from the sky and Jeremiah is defeated. “Oh, crazy guy got his ass kicked? Huh. How ‘bout that? Want to grab a bite to eat, dad?”

Reminds me of some of the best father-son outings of my youth.

WANDERLUST — Jennifer Aniston Disrobes in Tundra

My apologies.

As I mentioned last week, I’ve recently reviewed three films set in Alaska. The Frozen North has gripped my brain like a polar bear chomping down on a seal’s bum.

I will henceforth banish our largest state from this week’s review.

Done.

Now let’s go to the movies.

Manhattan husband and wife George and Linda (Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston) must leave the Big Apple because of a blizzard. Unable to afford their apartment, the couple travel to Atlanta where George has an offer to work skinning caribou with his brother, Rick (co-screenwriter Ken Marino).

When Ken proves to be an Inuit shaman, George and Linda eventually settle in a free-love commune and must adapt to the cries of a whale trapped under the ice as well as the go-with-the-flow attitude of their new neighbors. Seth (Justin Theroux) portrays the commune's charismatic oil company executive.

Director David Wain co-wrote the screenplay with Marino, but the film is heavy with improv moments. Some continue too long and feel like the ice pack is breaking up under your igloo. Others have the right amount of comedy, leaving you laughing and refreshed as if you’d just won a dog sled race with rabid huskies or showered in a fun shower.

At one point, George is tempted to have sex with a sexy musk ox named Eva (Malin Akerman). Will the marriage hold together or will it expand to include cousins and other family members marooned with you for the long, dark winter? This is the dramatic question posed by Wain.

Fortunately, the characters aren't plotting to kill a drunken Eskimo, thus remain likable enough so that we don’t mind the muskeg.

Hats off to Todd Sargent for his work landing a float plane atop a glacier as well as his duties as greensman gang boss.

Four stars out of five for being set in Barrow, Alaska or northern Georgia. I think I'll have some seal jerky.

It's the beginning of the end for the Ponds. Season seven of Doctor Who has officially started filming.

Thanks to a handy little press release, we know that Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill have started filming the next season of Doctor Who. The actual filming is taking place in Cardiff, Wales. This will be the last season for the Ponds(Amy and Rory(Gillan and Darvill)), the two have been companions on the show for a little over two seasons and Gillan is hoping for an on screen death for her character.

The highest rated series for the network has Matt Smith returning for a third season as the Eleventh Doctor, he said "It's thrilling and exciting to be back and working with two of my closest friends." Karen Gillan was also excited to come back and star filming saying, "It's just brilliant to be back on the TARDIS with Matt and Arthur for our craziest adventures yet."

The 14 episodes in the upcoming season is set to have guest stars like David Bradley, Rupert Graves and Mark Williams. This season will see both familiar enemies as well as new monsters in what BBC America calls "big, blockbuster-movie episodes."

Steven Moffat is still the lead writer and executive producer on the show along with Caroline Skinner, and Marcus Wilson as a producer. Toby Whithouse of Being Human and Chris Chibnall from Law & Order: UK will write episodes for the new season.

A World Without Video Games

$

I’m moving house this week and it’s obviously an incredibly stressful time.

So in order to really vent my frustrations with packing boxes and sorting things and finding cases for random CDs lying around, I do what I always do at times of duress: turn on my Xbox and play games.

Only something seems wrong, very wrong... in the space where the Xbox usually stands is a rectangular border of dust surrounding an indent in the carpet.

My Xbox has been packed away and worse still, I have no idea which box it’s in!

But wait! The secondary Xbox in the bedroom! It’s been gathering dust and used as a bookend for comics since we upgraded to the new 360.

Rushing upstairs I feel a pain in my chest and the realisation that the bedroom has all been packed away hits me hard.

I am without video games for a week.

Which means I’m going to have to spend my time doing other things.

What is a gamer like me meant to do?

Go outside?!

It’s dangerous out there. I’d prefer to live like a vault dweller in the Fallout games. Although, if there was an actual atomic war then electricity would be scarce, I’d probably never be able to play a video game again. Same could be said for a/the zombie apocalypse; firing up the Xbox would be unwise, alerting hordes of zombies to my location!

What did we even do before video games?

My generation hasn’t lived in a world without them. I suppose when I wasn’t playing Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast or Alex Kidd I’d do a lot of reading...I even used to pretend I had my own library and loaned out books to family members. But all of my books are currently packed away in boxes. Damn my ability to get organised!

If I’m denied my usual routine then perhaps I should turn to others for inspiration. What do non-gamers do?

Enjoy alcohol fuelled nights out? Shout at so called celebrities on reality TV shows? Throw caution to the wind and host a party? I doubt it.

The problem is, like many gamers, I love the idea of socialising and relish the challenge of repartee with peers... but in controlled environments; namely through headsets from the comfort of my own couch.

Maybe I could get to know my neighbours before I move?

There may be some small menial task they need completed in exchange for a useful trinket or someone they would like me to talk to on their behalf. Wait, damn it. That’s just an RPG. No! Break the vicious influence of gaming!

Or I could take this opportunity to get in better physical shape.

Exercising, stretching, maybe even pursuing some sort of sport. If the weather holds off, I could even become a member of the local golf club and.. DAMN IT! That’s just Wii Sports! Avoid gaming! Besides, I hate golf.

I’ve never actually learned how to drive so maybe I could take lessons.

I imagine that would take up a severe amount of time and give me the opportunity to go wherever I want. It’s probably not that hard, I mean, you’ve got your heads up display and your radar for how close the police are and if you’re worried it’s going to explode you just barrel-roll out of the door when the bonnet starts flaming. Right? GTA wouldn’t lie to me. No? Fine, no cars.

Speaking of learning things, I’m not particularly adventurous when it comes to cookery.

I could expand my recipe knowledge. All I need do is venture outside, pick some random ingredients (not forgetting the salt piles, of course) and mix all the ingredients in a cooking pot with the flesh of an animal I’ve hunted and killed and.. DAMN YOU, SKYRIM!

(Incidentally, the above image is from an online cooking show called Feast or Fiction which is pretty amusing!).

So, cooking is out of the question but what about chess? It’s not really the same as a video game but my Sims seem to enjoy it. I’d probably need to change up a few things though. First off, the rook/castle is a bit out dated and as cool as moving buildings are they don’t have the firepower of a giant Tesla Coil! And what’s with the bishop? You can’t send a man of the cloth into battle! What you need is a mammoth tank! V2 rocket launchers! Helicarriers! And thousands of attack dogs! No base is complete without attack dogs to sniff out spies and... this is just Command & Conquer isn’t it? Bugger.

Music!

Perfect! I now have the excuse to get out my dusty guitar and learn to play. Nothing beats a sing-song or jam session with your friends. I could get everyone round, hand them an instrument and maybe start a band. Only that wouldn’t work, as the instruments I own aren’t actually instruments - they’re peripherals. Plastic guitars clicking away and a muted plastic drum going tok-tok-tok isn’t music.

It’s no good!

Video games are simply engrained in my system...hardwired if you will. I had hoped writing this piece might teach me how to function in a world without video games but instead of finding alternatives I’m left longing to pick up a controller. I need games and if they become absent in any way, I subconsciously plant them into my day. There's no such thing as a world without video games for me.

A week isn't that long though and my Xbox will undoubtedly be the first thing I unpack in the new house.

Still, it’s nice to know that when the atom bomb dust settles, even though I might not have the games, I have an internal back catalogue of gaming knowledge to help get me through the day.

ARCHAIA AND JEFFCORWINCONNECT ANNOUNCE
‘I’M NOT A PLASTIC BAG,’ A GREEN GRAPHIC NOVEL

Told Entirely Without Words, Environmentally Conscious Story Raises Awareness
of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Spearheading a new green initiative in the graphic novel industry, Archaia Entertainment announced the upcoming release of Rachel Hope Allison’s I’M NOT A PLASTIC BAG, an original graphic novel published in association with JeffCorwinConnect Inc., a transmedia company co-founded by biologist and philanthropist Jeff Corwin, well-known as the Emmy Award-winning host and executive producer of ABC’s Ocean Mysteries.

The spellbinding story, told entirely without words, follows the journey of a few pieces of discarded trash—a supermarket plastic bag, an old umbrella—all the way out to the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where they join together into a tragic and destructive island of trash that searches for its place amidst the fragile beauty of nature. The tale is an artistic imagining of a very real phenomenon known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an accumulation of human consumer waste that floats in an area between Hawaii and the California coastline.

“I found out about the Pacific Garbage Patch kind of randomly, just stumbling on an article about it,” said Allison, who, in her day job, works as a strategist for Big Duck, a firm that helps nonprofit organizations raise funds and awareness through smart communications. “Like a lot of people, just learning that something so big and dangerous existed out in the ocean was kind of a shock, and the image of all that debris, trapped in such a remote part of the ocean, really stuck with me. That said, even some of the most disturbing pictures of the Garbage Patch also had a kind of beauty to them, and it got me thinking that the island itself might be a sympathetic character, that this might even be a love story of sorts.”

To emphasize the real-life environmental issues of marine debris and ocean pollution that the Garbage Patch embodies, I’m Not a Plastic Bag also includes eight pages of educational material on topics such as threatened wildlife and things readers can do to decrease their footprint on the environment.

“If this story can inspire anyone else to put the power of their own imagination toward tackling the environmental challenges we face today, then I can’t imagine any higher honor,” said Allison.

Joining Allison in the quest to get people involved in the fight to save our ocean and waterways is Jeff Corwin, who, in addition to hosting Ocean Mysteries, is a regular science and environmental correspondent for MSNBC and NBC News and has had his wildlife and conservation work featured on The Today Show, The Rachel Maddow Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The Oprah Winfrey Show, among many others.

“Despite the fact that U.S. citizens take up only 5% of the world population, we generate 40% of our planet’s trash!” wrote Corwin in the Foreword to the book. “The good news is that each one of us, no matter where you are from, or how old you are, has the power and the responsibility to keep our Earth clean. Rachel Allison’s incredible and almost ethereal story of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch will not only engage and awaken your spirit, but will empower all of us to save our precious planet from falling prey to garbage and waste.” The partnership between Archaia and JeffCorwinConnect plans for I’m Not a Plastic Bag to be the first of many books to come. The two companies plan to collaborate on additional titles, across various environmental themes, to help raise education and awareness of the conservation challenges and wins of our planet while building a new generation of environment stewards amongst the youth

“Just as Archaia Entertainment endeavors to bring people together through books, JeffCorwinConnect seeks to connect people to the planet, its species and the ecosystems they live in, creating education and awareness about key issues facing our environment. Our companies’ mutual interest in education and enriching the social consciousness makes our relationship with JeffCorwinConnect an extremely exciting one,” said Archaia CEO PJ Bickett. “In joining forces with JCC, we look to create a line of books that raises awareness about many incredibly important issues concerning our environment and wildlife. We couldn’t ask for a better first step in this new initiative than Rachel’s beautiful story in I’m Not a Plastic Bag.”

Anurag Agarwal, co-founder and CEO of JeffCorwinConnect Inc. added, “Partnering on a venture like this gives us the tremendous opportunity to connect and grow our community of global citizens. With the growing acceptance and use of graphic novels in the education and the retail markets, we believe that we can highlight critical environmental issues through this exciting format.”

The book will also debut Archaia’s new printing initiative in conjunction with Global PSD. Through the efforts of American Forests® and the Global ReLeaf® Program, for each tree that is cut down for the printing of I’m Not a Plastic Bag, two trees will be planted.

I’m Not a Plastic Bag (8” x 10”, full color, hardcover, 88 pages, $19.95, ISBN 978-1-936393-54-1, Diamond Order Code JAN12 0824) will release in late March at bookstores and comic book stores…just in time for Earth Day on April 22nd!

There are two types of hip-hop love songs: songs written about women for women, ones written about women for men.

The former are the soft sappy Drake-type slow jams that are waaay more R&B than hip-hop.

The latter falls into two categories: songs like “Rub Your Ass On Me.” and the sincere songs.

Examples would be A Tribe Called Quest’s “Bonita Applebaum and The Pharcyde’s “Passin Me By.” (The title “Rub Your Ass On Me” is fictional. Please don’t email me when you can’t find it on iTunes.)

The difference between the two is like comparing an episode of Entourage to Say Anything… one is a comic book type “bro-venture,” the other closer to real-life

For the most part, it seems like the sincere hip-hop love song was extinct.

Enter Heems of Das Racist and “Womyn” off his brilliant solo effort Nehru Jackets. (The spelling may is a nod to his alma mater, Wesleyan University. To learn more, please see the film PCU).

Over Mike Finito’s twinkling xylophones and sparse drums, Heems takes a simplistic, humorous but heartfelt approach to praising the fairer sex, running a gamut of thoughts that women have caused since… well, I guess, forever.

While he admits that they’re all wonderful, the entire theme of “Womyn” can be expressed in this verse (particularly the last two lines):

Sometimes women are venom
But sometimes women is like the best flower (BEST FLOWER!)
Yo women? Yo they got the power (THEY GOT THE POWER!)
Yo women? They like to take showers
And when they let you take em with them it's really awesome (SHAMPOO!)

Yes, that’s right “Womyn” comes with a bunch of Jim Jonesesque ad-libs… except you don’t have to force yourself to sit through a Jim Jones song.

It’s like taking the cholesterol out of double bacon cheeseburgers. (Also, why is it that people doing Jim Jonesian ad-libs are better than actual ad-libs performed by Jim Jones?)

And the hook… oh, the hook. “These chicks is womyn” sung in the same style as “That girl is poison” from Bell Biv DeVoe’s classic “Poison.” (For the uninitiated and people who love referential pop culture, Heems and Das Racist are a treasure trove of references. If you’re one of these people, you should really get familiar.)

Here’s to hoping “Womyn” is a return to the sincere hip-hop love song.
