Monster of The Month: PEPIE, The Lake Monster of Lake Pepin

Of course the most famous Lake Monster in the world is that elusive Scottish rascal, the Loch Ness Monster.

But “Nessie” is not alone.

Lake Monsters are allegedly seen all over the world.

Lake Champlain, which borders New York, Vermont, and Quebec, is said to be home to a creature (or more likely creatures) named Champ. While working on my upcoming book Monster Hunters, I joined a team of cryptozoologists (people who study unknown animals) for a “Champ Camp” on the shores of Lake Champlain.

We looked, but didn’t find old Champ.

Unwatchable: A Look At The Censored Eleven

By Erin Maxwell

Back in 1968, Warner Bros. took 11 of their cartoons off the air. The infamous “Censored Eleven” were pulled from syndication, but not without reason.

For those who don’t know much about these cartoons, or have never heard of them, viewings can be shocking, to say the least. While not intentionally malicious, the toons smacked of racist stereotypes and questionable taste. That’s putting it mildly.

In other words, there was a reason why there were pulled.

However, despite the infamy that surrounds these cartoons, they are not without merit. The music and the art are a snapshot of the time in which they were created.

While the toons might not have a place in contemporary society, they do offer an interesting look into the jazz age and the pop culture product that reflected the era. Furthermore, many of which were created by legends of the animation industry, like Chuck Jones and Tex Avery, giants in their time when it came to art of inking.

With that in mind, here is a look at the WB’s infamous Censored Eleven:

Delusions of Fortune: Comic Book Browsing on CRAIGSLIST

I don’t know when it started, but one of my favorite things to do when I’m bored on the Internet is hit up Craigslist and see what comics people are trying to sell.

Keep in mind, I’m never really looking to buy comics.

I’m not much of a collector these days. Plus, what few commercial interactions I’ve conducted over Craigslist, while not outright horrible, weren’t exactly fantastic to the point of making me want to habitually use the site to make any kind of purchase.

No, when I go searching for comics via Craigslist, I’m looking to see how insane people are when it comes to valuing their crap.

Gary Busey, Selling Comics on Craiglist since 2004
Sometimes people think because some of their comics have a #1 on the cover that means it HAS to be worth something (even if it’s X-Force #1), other times there’s this impression that if a comic is older than a decade then that classifies it as “vintage.”

Other times, it’s a failure to understand how appreciation works, or depreciation as the case may be.

“I paid a total of $300 for all these comics so I think asking $275 is fair.”

“The cover price of these twenty comics is $2.99. per comic so I won’t accept anything less than $55 for the lot.

James Sallis’ DRIVE Comes To IDW This Summer

IDW Publishing hits the sun-bleached streets of L.A. this summer with the comic-book adaption of James Sallis’ modern noir classic, DRIVE. Artist Antonio Fuso (G.I. Joe: Cobra, Zombies vs Robots) alongside IDW’s own Michael Benedetto will adapt Sallis’ novel into a four-part series of Hollywood stunt driving, high-stakes heists, and cold-blooded revenge.

DRIVE follows a young man who escapes to L.A. to do one thing, drive. That’s all he does, and he’s the best. Whether on studio lots as a stunt driver or in high-speed chases evading the cops, there’s no one better behind the wheel. That kind of expertise comes with a hefty price tag and allows for a strict set of principles: “I don’t sit in while you’re planning the score or while you’re running it down… I don’t take part, I don’t know anyone, I drive…” But in L.A.’s criminal underworld, the rules are made to be broken if you want to stay alive.

“This is a story that’s practically made for comic books,” offered series editor Justin Eisinger. “DRIVE is a lean, taught story, where the details lend that feel of authenticity. If you’ve cruised the back neighborhoods and streets of Los Angeles — or any metropolis — and you’ve read this book, there’s a tone, a feeling that ties them together. It’s tactile. It’s there and we want to bring those ominous undercurrent vibes to the page.”

If I had a nickel for every time I received a pitch to promote a Kickstarter, I'd be sitting here enjoying a bucket of fried chicken and drinking from a two-liter bottle of Fresca.

Unfortunately, we can't promote every Kickstarter, and personally, I need to find the project pretty damn enticing to even mention it.

Here's one of the good ones.

Strange Kids Club Magazine is currently raising funds to release it's upcoming fifth issue.  A mixture of original comics with a heaping pile of Eighties nostalgia, the magazine is a must have for anyone who grew up in front of the television on Saturday mornings.

The Missing follows Tony, played by James Nesbitt (The Hobbit trilogy, Jekyll), as a man devastated by the abduction of his young son, Oliver, during a family vacation in France. He becomes obsessed and spends years searching, unable to accept the potential fate of his child. Tony's exhaustive quest fractures his marriage to Emily, played by Frances O' Connor (Mr Selfridge, A.I. Recently, I was on an excursion to visit a friend in the lovely state of Michigan. Now that we are adults she has opened her own business: a video game and dvd resale store.

I was walking down the aisles and gazing at game after game; Contra, Sonic, 007, Mario... all very meaningful games indeed.

However, after some browsing I spotted it, a game so majestic, so innovative, so absolutely mind blowing I had my subject for this week’s Flashback to the Present:

William Shakespeare's The Phantom of Menace:
Star Wars Part the First
By Ian Doesche; Illustrations by Nicolas Delort
Published by Quirk Books

I have put off reading this book for a while now.

The hurt, the pain, the sheer disappointment of the movie still lingers in my bones and when I start to think that I’ve got a good grip on the blanket of depression that usually wraps around me when I think about The Phantom Menace, I find that I do not…

For there are people who share this world with me for whom their very first introduction to the beloved Space Opera is not the vision/mind obliteration that are two space ships engaged in a stacked-deck battle against a black background, but the sound of racist Asian stereotypes…passing through the lips of Nute Gunray (sigh).

But I will persist, like the Rebels, and go forth into Ian Doescher’s Star Wars-ian Shakespeare hoping that through the beauty of The Bard’s language I can remove myself from the movie’s disastrous dialog completely…

‘Tis but a truth that all disappointed souls can relate to.

Gotham Central: BATMAN VS ROBIN (review)

As long as DC continues cranking out animated movies, Batman will continue to be a major player in their lineup each and every year.

In fact, since they first started producing these, not a year has gone by that Batman either didn’t headline or co-star in one of the DCU Animated Originals.

Although fans had criticized the fact that the rollout has been very Bat heavy (and they’re not wrong), as long as they maintain a high quality, you won’t hear this fan complaining. I always look forward to the next animated Batman movie.

Having said that, last year’s double dose of animated Bat movies left me underwhelmed and wanting more. Thankfully, Batman vs. Robin has made up for it and delivered another solid entry in their animated library.
