On March 24th, Penguin will publish HALF WILD (Viking; on sale: March 24, 2015; 9780670017133; ages 12 up; $18.99), the second installment in Sally Green’s dark and captivating Half Bad trilogy. HALF WILD has already received two starred reviews, with Publishers Weekly raving that it “features the same powerful language, well-developed characters, fascinating magic, and harrowing action sequences as its predecessor and will leave its readers anxiously awaiting the final volume.”

Critical acclaim was not only what made this incredible novel stand out, Half Badsmashed two Guinness World Records prior to release (most translated book by a debut author and most translated children’s book pre-publication), and the global success has only continued to grow with rights being sold into 50 foreign language territories and film rights sold to FOX, with Karen Rosenfelt (Twilight, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, The Book Thief) producing.

In Half Bad, readers were introduced to a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans. Seventeen-year-old Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world's most powerful and violent witch. Not fitting into any one world, Nathan is hunted from all sides: nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. In HALF WILD, Nathan has finally come into his own unique magical Gift, and he's on the run--but the Hunters are close behind, and they will stop at nothing until they have captured him and destroyed his father. Forever torn between the worlds of darkness and light, Nathan must finally make a decision that could sever his tenuous connections to either side.

"I Built a New Toy Every Day!" – PLAYSKOOL PIPEWORKS FLASHBACK

Recently, I went on an excursion to the Palisades to visit my brother, Wolfgang Fauntleroy Knauf.

There he was in his Tap Out shorts, flip flops with socks on sporting a clashing T-shirt;  DJ-ing away amidst a pile of broken computer equipment, Manga toys, dishes, and car parts on the couch. He was talking about one subject after another as if he was the Spreader Gun from Contra.

This made me remember our time as young children growing up in the cornfields of Indiana.

You see Wolfgang has the ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.) Imagine the Energizer Bunny whose batteries never die, who just keeps going and going and going like a Gremlin on candy.

Not even ritalin – water or a diet free of chocolate could stop him.

Brother Wolfgang

My mom tried every toy with him when we were young yet he destroyed or lost them all. He-Man was sawed in half with a kitchen knife, GI Joe set on fire, Barbie gulliotened, rock tumblers thrown off the roof, wheels snapped off many a Hot Wheels Car, even our giant stuffed Santa was wrecked by Baby Wolfgang using a kindergarten pair of scissors and a bunk bed.  My dad said he could break a brick.

And then one Christmas “Santa” brought something so majestic, so mind blowing, so ADHD proof…

On Saturday afternoon in Hollywood, fanboys and girls from all corners of the world gathered as the Dolby Theater was temporarily converted to Starling City and then Central City for back-to-back panels of CW shows Arrow and The Flash.

Aisha Tyler moderated both panels as best she could.

Widely known to be a huge CW and comic book fan, she has a genuine passion for both shows but even that couldn’t penetrate the infamous rule of secrecy the show-runners have set in place.

They avoided many questions with charm and humor but some exciting things came to light…

The Pull List: NINJAK #1, BILL & TED'S MOST TRIUMPHANT RETURN #1, HELLBREAK #1 & More!

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Rebels #1
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Andrea Mutti
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.99

Brian Wood is one of the best writers in the game today.

So it goes without saying that his name on the cover is the only reason why I read this comic book that takes place during the Revolutionary War.

You’re probably expecting to hear about unknown stories of time travel or vampires that aided on both side of the conflict. Nope, that didn’t happen.

Our story is about a muted New Hampshire farmer named Seth who becomes the voice of his people. The backstory involving Seth’s relationship with his father as a youngster presented a timid soul that couldn’t find it in him to make the hard decisions. His father knew this and showed him little love.

It’s a simple story that sets up the main protagonist on his path that will hopefully get readers hooked in the months ahead.

Andrea Mutti’s artwork and Jodie Bellaire’s coloring does a good job of transporting the reader back to the 1700’s with lots of rural landscapes filled with rich greenery.

The character work didn’t evoke much emotion, but presented the right scene when the dialog carried various moments. Tyranny, evil red coats, and taxation without representation are the first things that come to mind when most Americans think about this war.

It’s not hard to paint England as the villains in such a narrative. While we get some of that, Seth’s story is meant to pull the reader in as things are seen through his lens.

Brian Wood and company pulled off a serviceable first issue that set the stage and there is plenty of room for growth that needs to be taken upon in order for the series to flourish in the months ahead.

Score: 3 out of 5

COMMUNITY Season 6 Episodes 1 & 2 (review)

$

By Elizabeth Weitz

The sixth season of Community has begun (as well as talk of that mythical movie) thanks to Yahoo! and the belief that all of our favorite shows can be saved from oblivion if we only believe in them hard enough (Well that and if there is a streaming service willing to pony up the dough to make it happen).

But judging by the first two offering of this season (Ladders and Lawnmower Maintenance and Postnatal Care) sometimes it may be better to allow those shows to follow the White Light into TV Heaven before it ruins them completely (think season 4 of Arrested Development).

In Ladders (S6E1) the remaining group of Abed (Danny Pudi), Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Jeff (Joel McHale) and Annie (Alison Brie) have to deal with the insertion of a new member to their gang in the form of administrative consultant Francesca “Frankie” Dart (Paget Brewster) who has come to set Greendale straight both financially as well as administratively.

Of course, change is not Greendale’s strong suit and the only way to keep everything exactly as it has always been, means allowing Greendale to go, well full Greendale.

Yeah, the episode sounds promising doesn’t it?

I Love TAYLOR SWIFT's "Shake It Off"

A Confession by Stefan Blitz

I'm writing this partially out of confusion; not quite shame, but more of the unexpected.  Recently, I find myself listening to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" again and again.

And again.

Personally, I never understood people's fascination with her.  She's cute, apparently dates a lot of guys who break her heart and wrote some country pop songs that made her richer than you or I will ever be.

I'm not a fan of country pop (despite it being the most popular music in the country), and although Ms. Swift created a number of headlines buying a mansion in my home state, I likely wouldn't look twice if she waited in line in front of me at Starbucks.

Which isn't entirely true.

SXSW Review: MADE IN JAPAN

Review by Todd Sokolove
Executive Produced by Elijah Wood, Morgan Spurlock
Produced by Josh Diamond, Jason Diamond, Julie Lombardi
Written and Directed by Josh Bishop
Starring Tomi Fujiyama, Charlie Louvin,
Oscar Sullivan, John Walker, Chris Scruggs

This year's SXSW Film Festival continues their commitment to the intersection of music and movies in the form of their "24 Beats Per Second" section. In addition to their love of midnight shows, it's one of my favorite unique things about the fest.

Premiering today (with additional shows Wednesday and Friday), Made in Japan is Josh Bishop's debut feature documentary telling the story of Tomi Fujiyama, the first female Japanese country music star.

Though I'm familiar with pop cultural East meets West occurrences (Tokyo Disneyland smoked Turkey Leg, anyone?), I have to admit Tomi is completely new to me.

I'd imagine the filmmakers would agree that's the best way to go into Made in Japan. It's impossible not to fall in love with Tomi from the get-go.

The Saturday Morning Fever Dream Returns In An All-New Hardcover Edition

This July, artist and co-author of the critically acclaimed Transformers vs. G.I. JOE, Tom Scioli unleashes his anarchic comic-book odyssey, American Barbarian.  This new edition from IDW Publishing collects the complete series with exclusive, behind-the-scenes bonus material and an all-new introduction by comics legend Rob Liefeld.

Conceived and executed as only Scoli can, American Barbarian stretches the comics medium to its limits, which J. Caleb Mozzocco of Comic Book Resources described as “pretty much the best thing ever.”

American Barbarian tells the complete tale of Meric, the last American on a revenge quest across the POST-post-apocalyptic landscape of New Earthea. The half-tank/half-mummy Two-Tank Omen murdered Meric's family and payback is due. The young barbarian will fight every zombie, mutant motorcycle gang, and robosaur (robotic dinosaur) if that's what it takes to keep the American Dream alive.

Comic Creators Gone Wild in Robinson and Hinkle's AIRBOY

A hilarious, semi-autobiographical new series

Bestselling writer James Robinson (Starman, Fantastic Four) and artist Greg Hinkle are hired to write a reboot of the 1940s action hero Airboy, but what better way to seek a little creative inspiration than a night of debauchery? Robinson and Hinkle team up to star in this metafiction about two comic book creators gone wild in the new series AIRBOY.

In AIRBOY, Robinson’s reluctant to do yet another Golden Age reboot and he’s worried about his stagnant career, ailing marriage, and all-around doldrum life. But that’s nothing a stiff drink can’t fix! Enter artist Greg Hinkle and a night of partying that has to be seen to be believed. Even Airboy himself will have his work cut out for him if he plans to get the two comic book creators in-line and back on the straight and narrow! Could this task be too much for hero?

“This is me trying something I would never have had the balls to do in the past. Namely, I'm combining the sad details of my real life at a recent much darker time, and having those revelations combined into a stew with gross exaggeration and comic book action fantasy,” said Robinson. “If you like semi-autobiographical drama, combined with drugs, alcohol, flagrant promiscuity, air fighters in two-fisted battle action and myself and artist Greg Hinkle doing full-frontal nudity… then this is the comic you've been waiting for. It's been a blast to write and very cathartic and I hope everyone enjoys seeing a different side to me.”

Check out some very meta pages after the jump.
