AMC Announces Two Season Order For THE WALKING DEAD Untitled Companion Series

New Series Will Air Day-and-Date on AMC Global

AMC announced that it has placed an initial two-season order for a companion series to “The Walking Dead,” the #1 show on television among adults 18-49 for going on three seasons.

The new series (title to be announced) will be set in Los Angeles and focused on new characters and storylines. The show’s first season will consist of six one-hour episodes and premiere on AMC in late summer. The show’s second season will air in 2016.

Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert from “The Walking Dead” are executive producers of the new series, which, like the original, is being produced by AMC Studios. Dave Erickson (“Marco Polo,” “Sons of Anarchy”), who co-created and co-wrote the pilot with Kirkman, is an executive producer and showrunner. The series will star Cliff Curtis (“Missing,” “Gang Related”), Kim Dickens (Gone Girl, “Sons of Anarchy”), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm).

“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of ‘The Walking Dead’ on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson and their writing team, along with an incomparable set of producers, cast and crew have created something remarkable and clearly distinct. We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead.”

PAX EAST: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bob-ombs.

By Benn Robbins

This weekend the Hoth-like city of Boston Massachusetts was invaded, much like Hoth itself when the Empire landed it’s AT-AT’s on the surface of that ice covered planet, when PAX East came in to town.

Lines were long, temperatures were cold, food trucks were a plenty and the gaming community exploded all over the Seaport district and surrounding areas.

“PAX EAST IS HERE!” claimed twitter feeds!

“PAX EAST 2015 IS UPON US!”, exclaimed Facebook feeds.

And the masses came.

What is PAX East?!

First off, PAX is an acronym for Penny Arcade Expo. If you don’t know what Penny Arcade is then why are you on this site?

HA HA.

Just kidding.

I had to look it up as well.

Not really but here is what you need to know.

A cursory browse through the inter webs will let you know that Penny Arcade is one of the longest running web based gaming comic strips of all time and that their creators, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik are about as lucky as they are talented as they have turned this little venture into a multi million dollar company with books merchandise and now four different conventions; PAXPrime (In Seattle, their home base), PAX East (their East Coast counterpart), PAX Australia (the PAX from Down Under) and now PAXSouth (filling the void at the bottom of the country).

PAX East is the giant middle brother of older Prime.

And giant it is.

'80s Treasure Trove: Uncovering Simple Minds' "Glittering Prize" Video

How is it possible that I've never seen the video for "Glittering Prize," one of the biggest hits from one of my favorite bands, Simple Minds?

Sure, I've seen the video for "Don't You "Forget About Me)" from The Breakfast Club more times than I can count, but, until today, I had never seen the video for their 1982 hit "Glittering Prize."

And I'm not alone. Check the YouTube comments and most users say the same thing:

Brian Folks: "I've been a fan since 81 and have never seen this video."

bill mill: "EXACTLY. I didn't even know this existed!"

sgtrayelwood: "I was eleven when this single came out. I remember playing it to death - I must have near worn it out. I never saw the video until now, though."

MTV (which was the only way to see videos back in the day) had a very short playlist of hits that it would play over and over again.

It's Time To Accept That HOUSE OF CARDS Was Always Terrible

$

The new season of House of Cards is disastrously bad.

Homeland Season 3 bad.

A lot has already been written about its many flaws, so I’ll just leave things at Frank’s nonsensical jobs program.

It’s the central plot point of the season, and it absolutely makes no sense.

If you haven’t heard about it — and this isn’t a spoiler — it amounts to gutting social security, Medicare, other social welfare programs and FEMA’s disaster relief fund to pay employers to hire people.

At this point it’s clear that the writers not have only a rudimentary understanding of politics and public policy, but also character development.

And this stretches back to the first season.

Let’s start with Frank.

It’s never been clear what exactly his character’s motivation is.  In the first few episodes his political scheming had a clear purpose: He’s seeking revenge for not being appointed Secretary of State despite promises that were made. That’s about as close as we ever get to a clear motivation for his action.

It’s obvious that Frank wants power but it’s never made clear why. Is there an ideology he wants to impose on that nation? Does he have some massive chip on his shoulder? Does he need money because he likes buying expensive things?

None of these are the case.

Monster of The Month: THE GOATMAN

When I heard my fellow Wisconsinite author J. Nathan Couch had written a book about an entity known as “Goatman,” I admit the first thing I visualized was Jim Breuer’s lame Saturday Night Live character Goat Boy.

That thing is haunting the woods of Wisconsin and beyond?

Scary indeed.

Through his research for his book Goatman: Flesh or Folklore?, Couch has found something much cooler: an urban legend, with a subcategory of Lover’s Lane story.

You know and love this kind of tale—teenage couple parks out on Lover’s Lane to get some sweaty alone time when eek! Eek! Eek! Eeeeeek! The long scraping and stabbing of a hook hand against the side of the car.

You can fill in your own version of the story from here.

Spidey will feature a real cloth costume based on his original 8" release, as well as easily interchangeable additional heads, hands, outfits and accessories to turn him into Daily Bugle photographer, Peter Parker, or a more modern comic version of the wall-crawler! The "throwback" outfit will come on a standard retro-style body in a reproduction box based on the classic packaging.  The additional outfits and parts will come packaged on a display tray, along with a miniature booklet outlining the history of the character. FOG! Chats With Cartoonist SCOTT McCLOUD About 'THE SCULPTOR'

Interview conducted by Clay N Ferno

In 1984, Scott McCloud established a name for himself with his creator owned series, Zot!, receiving a number of Harvey and Eisner award nominations.  He brought Zot! to an end in 1990, after 36 issues.

McCloud returned to comics in 1993 with his book, Understanding Comics, which established him as a comics theorist, presenting a definition, history, vocabulary, and methods of the medium of comics in the form of a graphic novel.  He went on to write two additional books on theory including Reinventing Comics and Making Comics, as writing several Superman Stories and a graphic novel, The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln.

Last month, Sony Pictures acquired the movie rights to Scott McCloud’s newest creation The Sculptor, his first full length graphic novel.

The Sculptor tells the story of artist David Smith, who makes a deal with Death to sculpt anything he can imagine with his bare hands.  After learning that he only has 200 days to live, and suddenly discovering the love of his life makes the decision of what to create harder than he thought.

The comic book scholar and auteur, McCloud, took some time with us to talk the comic creation process beyond his books in the Understanding Comics and his creator owned Zot! series.

Scott also questions the carbon date of The Golden Age of comics. Was that in the past or are we living it today?

Press X To Read This: Video Game Prompting En Masse

$

There's a huge dislike of quick time events and button prompting within the games industry and all of the gamers I know (myself included) agree that they are simply unnecessary unless you are in a tutorial or training mode or alternatively, you're playing a game like Dance Dance Revolution or Rockband where the game itself is one big quick time event.

So why is it that many modern day games feel the need to include them?

Dance Dance Revolution Supernova or Dancing Stage SuperNova is an example of the ultimate quick time event!

Personally I believe it comes down to the popularisation of gaming and its recent acceptance by the masses as a valid medium of entertainment (took them long enough!). Previously, playing video games was only something a minority of people did and even then, that was determined by how much disposable income you had and in its beginnings, how old you were. These days games are not just for kids and almost all households have some form of gaming console or PC within their walls, or failing that an iPad or phone on which they play games.

Now the games industry is accepted and continues to grow exponentially, it seems as though modern titles have started littering our screens with button prompts and quick time events because now it's assumed that not every gamer understands the language of games that comes from years of experience.

Many new gamers are being catered for with easy to follow instructions.

Titanfall has an intensive training mode or training simulator, allowing for minimal button prompts once in-game

If someone is new to gaming, it follows they will take longer to acclimatise to the controls and developers don't want to exclude anyone. If you can't work out how to press a button that translates to 'jump' or you repeatedly forget which button to use then on-screen prompts ensure you can still get through the game. I suppose their heart is in the right place, inclusion is in most cases a positive thing.

However, not only does this patronise new gamers, it is incredibly frustrating for those of us who have been playing games for years or in my case...decades.

What To Binge: Breaking Down The 'UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT'

By Erin Maxwell

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the latest Netflix original series offering to make it to streaming this month. Along with new episodes of childhood favorite Inspector Gadget and the latest season of House of Cards, Netflix is amping up their original programming with this surreal comedy.

For the most part, Netflix has been hitting it out of the park with their slate of original series. With winners Orange is the New Black and Cards, a bar has been set.

Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, Kimmy was originally a midseason order for NBC that had a shift in plans when the net opted to bail on the series. Considering the Peacock’s history of abandoning most of their truly original series (cough*Community*cough), this probably should have been expected.

All in all, the change was for the better, as the half-hour laffer stands a better chance of standing out on Netflix that buried on a Friday night cavalcade of soon-to-be-cancelled sitcoms.

So, does Kimmy measure up?

CINDERELLA (review)

Screenplay by Chris Weitz
Based on Disney's Cinderella Cendrillon by Charles Perrault
Directed by Kenneth Branagh
Starring Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett,
Stellan Skarsgård, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi,
Helena Bonham Carter, Hayley Atwell, Ben Chaplin

Cinderella.

It’s the animated movie in live action form.

That’s it.

There is no originality or twist on the classic tale.

And though the costumes and camera work create a majestic atmosphere – Kenneth Branagh doesn’t fail to illustrate the beauty of the fantastical world – any opportunity for character depth or story reinvention is absent.

It’s difficult for me to focus on what this movie is because I’m so distracted by what it’s not.

First, an overview.

Helena Bonham Carter, who plays the marvelous and witty fairy godmother, narrates the well-known story of a kind girl, with kind parents, who end up dying, leaving her with an envious and cruel stepmother.

Lily James (Downton Abbey) is lovely as Ella, with her soft mannerisms and quiet voice, always repeating her mother’s motto, “Be kind and have courage.”

It gets tiring after a while, but this movie is geared towards children, so I can forgive the banality.

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Roy Lee, Michael Tadross, Brooklyn Weaver
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra
Written by Brad Ingelsby
Starring Liam Neeson, Joel Kinnaman, Common,
Ed Harris, Génesis Rodríguez, Vincent D'Onofrio

Run. Run away. Run away all night.

I’m sorry for that cliché entrance into a review, but really.

RUN AWAY.

I’m sorry (but not sorry) for my sarcasm.

Run All Night is about nothing.

Two mob-type old men are old buddies, though Liam Neeson is haunted and seems to have always been Ed Harris’ bitch.

So they kill people.

But who cares why right? SO deep.

The movie is essentially a competition between whose voice is more raspy and deep.

Harris versus Neeson. Too old to fight, too old to be threatening.

Mr. Neeson, I know you’re a bad ass, but stop it. We know you’re a million years old.

And Ed Harris, come on, you were great in The History of Violence.  Should have left it at that, sir.

Please note, I’m not going to list character names here.

Just insert typical Irish names. It’s so cliché that it’s almost insulting.

To the “plot”.

FOG! Chats With HUMBLE BUNDLE About The BLOOM COUNTY Bundle!

$

Interview Conducted by Stefan Blitz

Earlier this week, Humble Bundle launched their latest promotion, centered around one of my favorite comic strips of all time, Bloom County.

I've made a few purchases from Humble Bundle and personally think what they do is both unique and fantastic.  I had the opportunity to discuss the launch of the Humble Bloom County Comics Bundle with Kelley L. Allen, the director of e-books for the company.

FOG!: For those unfamiliar with Humble Bundle, what is it?

Kelley L: Allen: Humble Bundle organizes pay-what-you-want plus charity promotions for awesome digital content such as games, books, and comics, and puts the power directly in the hands of the consumers, offering them fully-featured titles at prices they set themselves.

Consumers pay what they want and decide how to allocate their money between content creators, charity and a humble tip.  Among the comic companies we've worked with are Image, IDW, Dark Horse Comics, Valiant and Dynamite.

This week you launched a Humble Bloom County Comics Bundle. What was the genesis of offering this classic strip?

Traditionally, we have offered two week book bundles here at Humble.  We have a great relationship with IDW and we often talk about trying different types of experiments with our promotions. One idea that we floated around is starting to create smaller one week bundles.

Thus, our first one-week Transformers bundle which debuted last week and now the current one-week Bloom County promotion.

Also, I'm a huge fan of Bloom County since I grew up reading the strips.

What’s really neat about this bundle is that a supporter can get the entire output of Berkeley Breathed’s comic strips...

We noticed that our customers love to acquire the entire collection of series.   So, we thought it made perfect sense to offer every single Bloom County strip.

For those who read the adventures of Milo, Cutter John, Binkley, Steve Dallas, Opus, Bill The Cat and Portnoy, why do you think Bloom County will appeal to younger readers who never read the strip before?

As a Gen X'er, I have a lot of nostalgia for Bloom County.

There was quite a lot of debate in the office if Bloom County would resonate with our customers, especially the younger ones. However, once shown the image of the iconic Opus, everyone on my team instantly recognized him.

Even through they didn't grow up reading Bloom County, the comic still rings true on many fronts -- including the absurdity of politics and finding love.

And the absurdity of Star Wars.

Long before the Kardashians became a household name, Bloom County was already poking fun at our celebrity obsessed culture.

Can you tell us a bit about what charity Humble Bloom County Comics Bundle supports?

Traveling Stories is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating poverty through a variety of book initiatives.

They have built libraries in book-poor villages around the world such as El Salvador, Nicaragua, Philippines, South Sudan and Cambodia.  They also provide free reading support in the U.S. through their StoryTent programs.

Ted Adams, CEO & Publisher of IDW, is a huge supporter of Traveling Stories and is on their Board.  He asked for Traveling Stories to be the Charity of Choice for this particular bundle.

Would you still vote for Bill The Cat for President?

I'm afraid not.   Especially after his alleged affair with Paris Hilton.  However, I would so fanboy him if he ever had a Deathtöngue reunion.

After the jump check out the all of the details of this amazing bundle!

Blu-ray and Digital HD Include Bonus Content Featuring The Star-Studded Cast!

“There is nothing remotely like Inherent Vice…the comic
noir-to-end-all-noirs. Lie back, and go with the flow.”

— Stephen Holden, The New York Times

When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as The Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists...part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

THE TOP TEN CARTOONS OF 1943

$
0
0
We’ve now reached 1943, kind readers, one of the strongest years in animation history.

In fact, you could probably make a good argument for it being the all-time best year for cartoons, given the amount of high-quality work being produced by nearly every animation studio in America.

Certainly the creativity level at Warner Bros. was at an all-time high, and I had to leave off a ton of masterpieces in making this list (Tortoise Wins by a Hare, To Duck or Not to Duck, The Unbearable Bear, The Wise Quacking Duck, Jack-Wabbit and the Beanstalk, The Aristo-Cat, Wackiki Wabbit, Yankee Doodle Daffy, Tin Pan Alley Cats, Scrap Happy Daffy, Falling Hare, Daffy - the Commando, An Itch in Time and Puss n’ Booty all would’ve made fine entries on a list of this kind).

And as if all of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies weren’t enough, the studio was also producing the propaganda cartoon series Private Snafu, which featured the work of the Warner directors and animators at their peak along with strong writing from the likes of Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman. The only weak link at the studio in 1943 was Norm McCabe, a top-notch animator who generally got saddled with unfunny gags in his directorial efforts. This year he produced three mediocre efforts - Confusions of a Nutzy Spy, Hop and Go and Tokio Jokio - before being assigned to the Army Air Corps Training Unit and getting replaced by Frank Tashlin.

But it wasn’t only Warner Bros. that was making great films; MGM was going strong with prime Tom & Jerry cartoons (Sufferin’ Cats, The Lonesome Mouse, Baby Puss) and hilarious work from the great Tex Avery (Who Killed Who, One Ham’s Family, What’s Buzzin’ Buzzard). Avery even introduced his most famous character at MGM, the eternally deadpan Droopy, in his film Dumb-Hounded.

Disney released four high-quality propaganda one-shots, including Chicken Little and Reason and Emotion, two excellent films that I couldn’t find room for. They also produced some great films with series characters like Donald Duck (Donald’s Tire Trouble) and Goofy (Victory Vehicles).

George Pal was still going strong, with the excellent Dr. Seuss adaptation The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, along with the wonderful music-themed The Little Broadcast and the spooky Jasper in a Jam, featuring an early performance from Peggy Lee.

And Famous Studios had perhaps its best year ever, retiring Superman in favor of Little Lulu (a likable character that debuted in ’43 with Eggs Don’t Bounce), plus a series of one-shots called Noveltoons (kicking off with the funny Avery-inspired No Mutton Fer Nuttin’). Not to mention the studio produced several high-quality Popeye cartoons, including Too Weak to Work, The Hungry Goat, Happy Birthdaze and Cartoons Ain’t Human.

Even the studios that weren’t cranking out masterpieces were often doing interesting work. Walter Lantz brought James Culhane in as a director this year, and his first handful of shorts (Pass the Biscuits Mirandy, Boogie Woogie Man and Meatless Tuesday) all show signs of the excellence he would achieve at the studio within the next few years. And over at Columbia, artists like John Hubley and Zack Schwartz were experimenting with a more stylized approach to design and movement in films like The Vitamin G-Man, Professor Small and Mr. Tall, Willoughby’s Magic Hat and The Rocky Road to Ruin.

So, basically, I skipped a ton of great stuff, but I did the best I could.

On the list you’ll find several Warner Bros. cartoons, along with a couple from Disney and MGM, plus a notable effort from Germany.

Take a look:

How I Learned to Love The Furries

$

You know how it’s not only okay to make fun of Furries, the whole culture around it and even kind of encouraged?

How even among geeks, that's the one group everyone is more than fine marginalizing?

This is the story of how I got off that particular hate train.

Two years ago, I was dragged to one of my wife’s work events. This particular meet-and-greet was being held in downtown Atlanta at the Hard Rock Cafe, and the only reason I was excited to be there was because there was an open (and unlimited) bar. I got more than a little tipsy.

Scratch that, I got drunk.

College-drunk, in fact.

You know what I mean by that. Don’t pretend that you don’t.

So, yeah, the time the event wound down, I was pretty lit. Double fisting free whiskey does that to you. Maybe that was why I said "sure" when my wife made the following suggestion:

“Let’s go to the Furry Convention!”

Right across the street from Hard Rock Cafe Atlanta that very night at The Westin was a fairly large gathering of Furries, all of them in town for Furry Weekend Atlanta 2013.

Had I not been drunk, my reaction to someone suggesting we go to Furry Weekend Atlanta, even as tourists, would have been a resounding “Hell no!” But like I said; college-drunk.

And when you’re college-drunk, you’re open to anything.

So across the street we went to the Furry convention!
