FRESH OFF BROAD CITY'S BLACK-ISH BOAT: Riding TV's Diversity Wave

$
0
0
Y’all know me at this point.

Big fan of diversity in pretty much anything.

And these days, I’m all about TV.

Here’s a sample:

Fresh Off The Boat
A first-generation Taiwanese-American boy struggles to get along in mid-‘90s Orlando.

Broad City
Two young Jewish-American women exist only for each other in Manhattan, often to their own and everyone else’s detriment.

Looking
A group of friends, primarily young gay men, go about their lives trying to live out their dreams and find love in San Francisco.

Black-ish
An upper-middle-class black family in Los Angeles tackles living through race in the 21st century.

Cristela
A Mexican-American law school graduate in Dallas juggles her career and wacky relatives.

The Mindy Project
An Indian-American female doctor obsessed with romantic comedies tries to make her life into one.

Empire
A black family fights among themselves to inherit a hip-hop music label.

Orange Is The New Black
A white lesbian woman’s missteps land her in prison, as the stories of fellow inmates stretch into ethnicity, gender, class and LGBT issues.

And that’s just a bit of what’s happening.

When you look at the landscape of TV these days, more and more diversity has shown up this year.

It’s still not quite as representative as they should be, but the amount of minorities on TV right now enjoying ratings success definitely speaks to something great.

SWAG A-GO-GO: reviews for stuff you should check out

By Stefan Blitz
Here at FOG! HQ lots of cool stuff comes in, giving us the opportunity to check out some merchandise.  Here's our thoughts on some of the latest stuff that's passed through our rigorous testing.

The Book Seat

I spend minimum of twelve hours every day looking at a screen of some kind.  Whether it's working; researching, editing or writing to reading or watching some sort of video.

Lately, I find myself watching Netflix on my iPhone 6 Plus as I fall asleep.  On more than several occasions I've dropped my phone, hitting myself in the face.

Which is just one reason why The Book Seat is a perfect accessory.

Able to hold a physical book, tablet or phone, the malleable cushion weighs next to nothing, yet is able to easily hold and balance whatever you want for a hands free experience.

Without the need for a flat surface, The Book Seat has easily become something that I use every day and it's versatility is fairly limitless.

It also comes in a number of colors and print patterns and also has a handle and small pocket (perfect for reading glasses if you wear them).

With so many gadgets out there, it's refreshing that The Book Seat exists.  It's pretty basic, but in my opinion, a must have.

X-Men Retro Sage T-Shirt

Another sign that I'm getting old?

The image on this "retro" X-Men shirt is from the era that I grew up reading the comic.

This awesome 60% cotton 40% polyester, 100% soft and comfortable shirt features art by John Byrne and the classic line-up of Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm and Colossus.

How classic?  These are the characters from Days of Future Past, The Dark Phoenix Saga, The Proteus Saga, Demon, Murderworld and many more!

In the words of the characters themselves:

"Mein Gott!", "Goddess!", "Cripes, bub!", "Lenin's Ghost!", "To me, my X-Men!"

What are you waiting for?  Get your Danger Room on!

Daydream Theatre Company and The Arctic Playhouse are proud to announce their spring 2015 show, Co-Creator a play written and directed by Lenny Schwartz. The play is being produced by Jim Belanger, Lloyd Felix, and David Vieria.

Co-Creator is the story of Bill Finger, the uncredited co-creator of Batman. Finger helped create one of the most popular modern myths with Batman, as well as the Joker, Robin, Gotham City and many others. He died poor and alone, never receiving the recognition he deserved. This is his story.

Playwright Lenny Schwartz says of the piece. Of all the bio plays I have written, this is the most important. It is a crime what happened to Bill Finger. My only hope is that it brings a little more attention to the greatest unsung hero comic books, and pop culture has ever had.”
Production dates are April 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 2015. All performances are at The Arctic Playhouse, 117 Washington St, West Warwick, RI. Tickets are 10 dollars general admission and can be purchased at the door or at www.smarttix.com or www.daydreamtheatre.net.

Double Feature Movie Show: STILL A BETTER LOVE STORY THAN 'TWILIGHT' FAN FICTION

I missed the boat on Valentine’s Day (in so many ways), but I’ve never been good at schedules.

But last week also marked another momentous occasion: The release of the biggest budget fan film ever made: 50 Shades Of Grey.

Bored housewives all over the world have dogeared the hell out of these books, many of them not realizing that they had already read the books when they were about a vampire and a high school girl. They also don’t realize that they paid for three books just to read the same sex scene over and over and over again.

Whether they knew that or not, the books are still terrible and they still show a relationship that is just as abusive, if not more so, than the source material. This story gives BSD&M a bad name.

Here’s a double feature of films that are nearly as messed up, but show genuine emotion and character development within that framework.

Bitch Planet #3
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: Robert Wilson IV
Cover: Valentine De Landro
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $3.99

Bitch Planet has a strong feminist component that reinforces the message of self-acceptance when everything around us says we’re not good enough. While the male perspective might roll their eyes at this type of social commentary that doesn’t appeal to them, the reality is, it does.

Kelly Sue DeConnick has made Bitch Planet an enthralling and entertaining premise for the comic book medium that fits like a glove in all its splendor. The creators have laid out a format where every third issue will shy away from the main narrative and focus on the origin story of a specific character.

This time around, the jail bruiser Penny Rolle is the subject of examination as she is brought in front of a parole board of sorts.

Instead of judging the rehabilitation of a criminal offender, they are discussing the merit of Penny Rolle finally bending to Father’s will.

Artist Robert Wilson IV presents this opening deliberation in an environment that most people can relate to. Being strapped to a chair while listening to a dozen talking heads on a screen tearing down the core essential elements of her being is equivalent to feeling trapped in a locker filled hallway as the school antagonist stridently points out your flaws in order to hide their own insecurities.

The coloring is a funky, almost disco pallete of greens, blues, and pinks which suggests that everyone needs to hang loose and simply comply even though only one section of the population gets the benefit of free will. The story continues on to explore Penny’s childhood where DeConnick sets us on the standard journey of seeing someone pure and innocent get dealt an ugly hand as the happy go lucky Penny is torn away from her loving grandmother.

While she becomes rough around the edges through years of ridicule, or, for the sake of this world, reaffirmation, Penny snaps, fights back, but instead of becoming this evil villain, contrary to Father, something different occurs which was empowering for a variety of reasons.

As I stated earlier, this might not sound like the most fulfilling comic book experience, but the synergy of the creative team makes it so with an important message cleverly intertwined into a plot that makes it impossible not to jeer the bad guys and cheer the good women with resilient conviction.

Score: 5 out of 5

Watch POWER/RANGERS Starring Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der Beek

$

This is not your younger sibling's Power Rangers.

As a matter of fact, it's a Power Rangers that you've never, ever seen before.

Released today, is Power/Rangers a short film from director Joseph Kahn (Torque, Detention) that will not only have Lionsgate executives questioning their own plans for their upcoming Power Rangers film, but also likely generate many, many meeting for Mr. Kahn.

Here's his description:
Deboot of the Power Rangers. My take on the FAN FILM. Not a pilot, not a series, not for profit, strictly for exhibition. This is a bootleg experiment not affiliated or endorsed by Saban Entertainment or Lionsgate nor is it selling any product. I claim no rights to any of the characters (don't send me any money, not kickstarted, this film is free). This is the NSFW version. An alternate safe version is on youtube.
And what an impressive experiment it is.  Starring Katee Sackhoff  ans Kimberly/Pink Ranger and James Van Der Beek as Rocky (with Russ Bain as Tommy/Green Ranger, Will Yun Lee as General Klank and Gichi Gamba as Zack/Black Ranger), Power/Ranger is a bold, creative and visually striking take on an all too familiar property.

Produced by Adi Shankar (who also did The Grey, Lone Survivor and Dredd), Power/Ranger also continues his fan film streak that he's already done with Venom: Truth in Journalism and The Punisher: Dirty Laundry).

Check it out after the jump and share what you think.  Is this the direction that you'd enjoy watching a Power Rangers franchise?

'The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age Smackdown' Gets a New Clip!

When Fred loses his family’s vacation money, he hatches one of his hair brained plans to get it back. It’s a sports entertainment spectacle that involves throwing his best bud, Barney into the wrestling ring with the likes of John Cenastone (John Cena), Marble Henry (Mark Henry) and even The Undertaker, with Fred himself as event promoter! The crowds roar, the “clams” are pouring in from ticket sales and even Mr. McMagma (Vince McMahon) is taking notice of all the hoopla. Can Fred keep serving up bigger and badder matches or is he in for the rocky ride of his life? Including all-star appearances from The Boulder Twins (Brie and Nikki Bella) and Daniel Bry-Rock (Daniel Bryan), it’s time to get the whole family together for a collection of hard-hitting, side-splitting laughs from the most epic event in all of prehistory!
I can't say that the wrestling aspect is a draw for me, personally, but the character design and animation looks amazing, reminiscent of the early seasons of the show, capturing a bit of the original Ed Benedict designs.

Check out a clip and the trailer after the jump!

Two Semesters at Xavier’s—Reenrolling With the Two Halves of the New X-Men Part II of II

OK, party people, so last time out in Danger Rooms, we talked about the fun and innocence of the first half of the New X-Men: Academy X series and marveled at how I survived my infant son clearly trying to poison me to death and this time…well, things are about to get darker.

Much darker.

OK.  A little lighter.  That’s too dark.

When Nunzio Defilippis and Christina Wier left the book with issue #19, the kids at Xavier’s had just lived through the warped reality of the House of M and with that storyline culminating in Scarlet Witch eliminating the mutant gene, it was obvious that something had to change going forward.

And change it did.

As Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle took over the writing chores, the book’s title was shortened to simply New X-Men, and the ramifications of a world in which mutants were suddenly an endangered species were felt almost immediately.

A Brand New Beginning and Title, Starting With Issue #20!

With several members of the cast pre-M Day having lost their powers, and X-23 being brought aboard to join the remaining kids, we got to see some rather moving and poignant scenes of the students reacting, with some joyous that their mutant powers were gone, and others deeply devastated, some to the point of denial like Melody Guthrie who nearly died jumping off a roof because she was certain her gift of flight was not truly gone.

It was a visceral moment and Yost and Kyle really sold the conflicting emotions and chaos of the whole situation.

SPANKS A LOT: On Fifty Shades of Grey, Sight Unseen

$
0
0
The movie Fifty Shades of Grey premiered to a whopping $85 million Valentine’s Day weekend box office gross ($94 million counting the Monday holiday). My first thought upon reading that headline was, Good for you, S&M—you’ve finally gone mainstream in a most legitimate way, making a profitable leap from the darkened basements of sex fetishists and the sticky pages of lurid bestsellers to the giant silver screens and cushioned, beverage-cup-holding pews of multiplex movie temples.

My limited knowledge of Fifty Shades of Grey is as follows: I became aware of the bestseller, part one of a trilogy written by a woman, and how its torrid descriptions of anatomy, intercourse and sadomasochism appealed to the bored soccer mom contingent. There was an instance last year when some family members discovered an abandoned boxed set of the Fifty Shades books in their new apartment closet, and we all agreed the volumes were probably left there in shame by the previous tenants, and that pious aunt so-and-so would definitely prefer for us to burn all three.

I have not read the trilogy, but I’ve heard enough of writer E L James’ filthy and juvenile turn-of-phrase to discount it as mere pulp erotic fiction and I figure I’m not depriving myself of high literature by skipping it.

The announcement of the inevitable movie adaptation did little to pique my interest—nobody involved, including the British director Sam Taylor-Johnson, seems to have done anything I’m kicking myself for missing—but a casting shakeup just before filming was scheduled to begin made me take note. It was strange that nobody could quite explain why vanilla TV and movie actor Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim) dropped out at the last minute as Christian Grey and was replaced by equally vanilla and lesser-known TV and movie actor Jamie Dornan.

Scheduling with other projects versus commitments to a potential trio of movies usually factor into casting shuffles on a deal like this, but I wonder if the true reason had anything to do with the so-called blasphemous source material, or the amount of skin the performers would be expected to expose in the movie? Or was it because author and co-producer E L James was proving to be a control freak who butted egos with the director and screenwriter at every turn? Or, perhaps, was it because Charlie Hunnam had finally read enough of the book Fifty Shades of Grey to realize he was simply seeking a more elevated starring role opportunity?

Viewing the Fifty Shades trailer, I tittered at the fake tone of austerity the director seemed to be striving for: the shy and trembling flower being interviewed by a powerful and confident Master of the Universe; their tension-fraught chit-chat dripping with innuendo; the flashy montage of Mister Grey’s billionaire thrill-seeker lifestyle, with fleeting peeks at his impeccable washboard abs and handsomely lit fetish gear—all of this a teasing prelude to the big naughty reveal that Mister Grey likes bondage, and the even bigger and naughtier reveal that the girl Anastasia Steele…is into it! With Beyoncé moaning through a slow-grind remix of “Crazy In Love” on the soundtrack, all of this is clearly intended to be profoundly provocative and juicily titillating, and you’d assume from the overwrought histrionics and all the lip-biting that the sheer notion of S&M combined with the female character’s willful exploration of it is a plot device so shameful in its depravity and seismic in its social and sexual impact that the movie threatens to shake viewers’ fundamental religious convictions to their very core.

Cue the church-based protests, but more on that later.
