Before you jump on the “New Year, New Me!” bandwagon and hit the gym for a solid month prior to getting bored of your new regime by February and reuniting with the couch; take a minute to set yourself some realistic goals. I know I usually write about trying to look like someone else, which is a pass time I stand by as fun and healthy, but at this time of year people become obsessed with punishing themselves in an attempt to force their body into an unobtainable shape.

We all have our own view on what being fit and attractive means, and therefore the partners we seek out and the way we dress and such are all different from one another.

As a bunch of adults living in the 21st century, I’m sure we’re all also aware that the media does have some influence on these opinions in most cases, whether we care to admit it or not.

I’m not just talking about the models on the covers of magazines and the men and women featured in pornography, but also the characters in comic books and animations with which we’re all so familiar (as are your children, most likely.)

SPIDER-MAN Might Be Suiting Up For AVENGERS INFINITY WAR

$

By Christopher M.

There's been some clear signs post-Amazing Spider-Man 2 that the franchise is in real creative trouble and Sony Japan the people who pay the bills at Sony Pictures want things fixed soon. The company has been losing billions in most divisions and the studio isn't making huge strides compared to competitors like 20th Century Fox, Paramount or Disney.

Before the Sony email hacking leaks there had been chatter of Marvel and Sony getting together for a Spidey summit in January. The studio division was being pressured by Sony Japan to work something out with Marvel to obviously help the dwindling franchise which is seeing it's box office decrease with each installment.

We since had been trying to figure-out what was legit and what was bullshit from the Sony email leaks as many stories/rumors started flooding the film news cycle.

Goodbye Andrew.
Stories started coming out like Sony wanting to reboot Spider-Man a second time without actor Andrew Garfield who would be seemingly recast. Talk of his firing become a heated topic but a likelihood considering of the piss-poor job the films had been doing.

This had been a story over at Badass Digest even before the leak, suggesting that Sinister Six would be the film Sony would reboot the franchise.

I have to assume this is a serious possibility and might be the end of Garfield as Peter Parker.

There was even talk that the studio would want to bring Parker back to high school and would mean a much younger actor would be replacing Garfield in the role.

22 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were linked to three different Spider-Man film projects including an animated film, replacing Marc Webb for Amazing Spider-Man 3 and being on Sony producer's wish-list to direct the reboot. It looked very likely the pair could be taking over the franchise soon.

AVATAR 2 Delayed Until 2017 And Could Affect BATTLE ANGEL's Development

Written by Christopher M.

There is word from James Cameron (via Coming Soon) that his Avatar sequel with the working title of Avatar 2 is now being delayed from it's original release date of December 2016 to December 2017. The delays are due to the extensive writing needed to make sure all three sequels are cohesive with each other. Cameron still expects to shoot all three films at the same which is likely apart of the delay.
“There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film,” said Cameron.“We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that and parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments.”
This makes sense since the team of writers include Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver working on Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, while Shane Salerno is writing Avatar 4 . James Cameron being involved with development on all three scripts. A rather large task since he's also directing all three films as well.

The news will likely also see delays with both Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 release dates as well pushing them to December 2018 and December 2019.

70s-Era Ronco Crafting Kits Made Me the Person I Am Today, And I Hate Them For It

By Elizabeth Weitz

I am a crafter.

Obviously not a good one as I don't have an Etsy store and very few people actually buy the stuff I make which is kind of sad as I work really hard on this crap and would like to make some money so that I can continue to buy stuff off of Amazon that I don't need to fill the empty void inside my soul caused by my lack of talent in the writing and crafting world.

It's a vicious cycle.

Please Buy My Stuff

Of course, I could just give it up and get a hobby that doesn't crush my spirit, but that goes against my self-destructive streak, so, I power through and continue to create small works of art that, when they don't sell, usually end up going to friends who politely nod and thank me for adding to their garbage bins.

I hate my life.

At 40 it seems weird that the decade that I became an adult in is almost two decades in the past. That may be kind of a convoluted sentence but you'll have to forgive me, I'm old and no longer care about other people's need to read a well-defined sentence.

So let's take a little trip to the last decade when I was at my most attractive.

Here's to 1998! Video after the break.

ALL THAT RAZZ - The 35th Annual Razzie Nominations

By Erin Maxwell

The best of the worst have been announced, but this year, there is redemption for those who have clawed their way back to the top. That’s right, kids. The 35th Annual Razzie nominations have been announced.

Topping the list for worst of 2014 is “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction,” with seven nominations, including worst picture, worst actor and worst screenplay.

The Mark Wahlberg-starrer will duke it out over worst picture “honors” with “Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas,” “Left Behind” (the Nic Cage remake of the friggin’ awful OTHER Kirk Cameron movie), “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “The Legend of Hercules.”

This year, however, there is a bit of twist. The Redeemer Award category honors former nominees who crawled their way back into the good graces of critics and fans after a few humbling bad career decisions.

Nominees this year include Ben Affleck, once nominated for the terrible, terrible, terrible“Gigli” but redeemed through this year’s critical darling “Gone Girl.”

Four-time Razzie nominee Jennifer Aniston also made the list with her turn in “Cake,” which earned her nods from the Golden Globes and SAG. Other redeemers include Mike Myers for the docu “Supermensch”, Keanu Reeves for the under appreciated “John Wick” and Kristen Stewart for “Camp X-Ray.”

Check out the full list of nominees after the jump.

THE TOP TEN CARTOONS OF 1939

$

0
1939 is often considered the greatest year in motion picture history, due to the release of seminal films like Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, etc.

As far as animated films are concerned, however, I’m not sure many would make the same claim.

The Disney studio had most of its efforts on upcoming animated features like Pinocchio and Fantasia (both released in 1940), and some of their short subjects settled into formula (the Silly Symphonies series ended this year in favor of character-based series featuring Donald Duck, Goofy, etc.) On the other hand, they did win the Best Animated Short Oscar for their final Silly Symphony, The Ugly Duckling, which I have heinously neglected to include on this list (I sort of prefer the more primitive 1931 version).

Warner Bros. was also in a bit of a middling period; the studio exploded with inspiration in 1937 and 1938, pushing boundaries in a way the world of animation had never seen, but in 1939 and 1940 the studio became distracted with spot gag cartoons and travelogue parodies (which were often funny but predictable), and they didn’t fully get their groove back until A Wild Hare in 1940, which introduced the world to Bugs Bunny.

Max Fleischer released his first animated feature in 1939 (Gulliver’s Travels), but the studio lacked the personality it once had, and studios like MGM and Walter Lantz were still figuring out what they were going for (both would find purpose the following year with the creation of characters like Tom & Jerry and Woody Woodpecker).

But I’m selling 1939 a bit short, as even in this period of transitions there were plenty of wonderful cartoons released, as you’ll see from this list. There are many great films from Disney and Warner Bros. here, as well as some appearances from MGM, Max Fleischer and independent filmmaker Len Lye.

Hasslein Books Announces New DOCTOR WHO Essay Anthology

Hasslein Books has announced Who Beyond 50: Celebrating Five Decades of Doctor Who, written by Brian J. Robb and Paul Simpson. Who Beyond 50 is now available at Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and CreateSpace.com, and will soon also be available to consumers at BarnesandNoble.com, and to resellers via Ingram, NACSCORP and CreateSpace Direct Resellers.

BBC's immensely popular Doctor Who series, featuring an extraterrestrial Time Lord exploring the universe aboard a time machine resembling a police call box, is a significant part of British pop culture and a cult favorite worldwide. The series has changed radically over the years, with thirteen actors portraying the Doctor to date, and with more than 50 companions joining him on his adventures. Few television series have remained in production for decades. Fewer have come back from cancellation to spawn multiple spinoffs. And even fewer have thrived following the loss of their lead actor. Amazingly, Doctor Who can proudly boast all three claims.

Brian J Robb and Paul Simpson have assembled 50 thematic, chronological essays covering a wide variety of Who icons over the past five decades. The long-time collaborators posted preliminary versions of some of these essays at Sci-Fi Bulletin, but have delved into far greater detail for this collected edition, examining not only the show itself, but the background of each actor to play the role of the Doctor and each showrunner who helped keep the series alive, as well as the novels, audios, monsters, companions, music, effects, fandom, and much more. But Who Beyond 50 is more than just another TV retrospective—it's a celebration of Who's surprises and successes, and an honest account of its faults and failures.

Brian J. Robb is a New York Times and Sunday Times best-selling author whose works include Timeless Adventures: How Doctor Who Conquered TV, A Brief History of Star Trek, A Brief History of Star Wars, Counterfeit Worlds: Philip K. Dick on Film and Screams and Nightmares: The Films of Wes Craven. Paul Simpson has written official guides for Farscape, Smallville, The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, as well as unofficial books about subjects as diverse as James Bond, Nicole Kidman, The O.C., the Oz mythos and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The two authors recently collaborated on Middle Earth Envisioned: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: On Screen, On Stage, and Beyond.

Who Beyond 50, a softcover volume spanning 330 pages, is now available for purchase. Beautifully designed, the book features an introduction by Nicholas Briggs, a British actor, writer, director and composer closely associated with Doctor Who and its various spinoffs, particularly as the voices of the Doctor's nemesis, the Daleks and the Cybermen. It's expected we could even more DC Comics rogues in the film, including Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor.

Produced by Thomas Tull, Michael Mann, Jon Jashni
Written by Morgan Davis Foehl, Michael Mann
Directed by Michael Mann
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tang Wei, Viola Davis,
Ritchie Coster, Holt McCallany,  Yorick van Wageningen,

Chris Hemsworth leads the cast as convicted white collar hacker Nicholas Hathaway enlisted by the FBI and the Chinese to take down a globe-spanning network of criminals threatening the safety of the world’s economy and nuclear energy in Blackhat.

Divisive director Michael Mann (Heat, Public Enemies) gets on the cyber-hacking bandwagon nearly twenty years too late, but the movie does have some great action moments if you can start to follow the logic of the thing.

Co-star Tang Wei (Lust, Caution) delivers a great performance as Lien Chen, partner to the furloughed Hathaway, though she could have easily been given more to do as a female leading lady by Mann or the story architects.

Bradley Cooper stars in the Clint Eastwood directed American Sniper. A sure-shot for Oscar winner, with a total of six nominations, this heartbreaking war picture astounds with it’s scale.

BLACK WIDOW Will Return in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Written by Christopher M.

The directing duo The Russo Brothers have confirmed during an interview in China that they're indeed bringing back Black Widow for Captain America: Civil War revealing Scarlett Johansson is a part of the cast. An aspect that had yet to be made official by either Marvel or the actress.

I had some concerns that Scarlett Johansson's participation as the lead in Rupert Sanders' Ghost In The Shell could conflict with her taking a role in Civil War. However, this was cleared-up when the release date for Shell was confirmed by Disney for April 2017 giving the actress plenty of time to do both movies. Luckily, both projects are under the Disney umbrella which is likely the reason it's worked-out for Scarlett.

As it stands the cast officially includes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson and Daniel Bruhl in a mysterious role. The assumption being that Daniel could be playing a villain the film which could be Baron Zemo, Baron Mordo or someone else entirely.  Actor Anthony Mackie, revealed on a Chicago radio show, that he'll be back again as the Falcon in the film and went so far as to reveal filming locations including Berlin, Puerto Rico and Atlanta.

Check out the interview with the Russo Brothers below.

If you didn't already know Marvel and Chris Evans are huge in China and the country I'm sure is dying to see more of Captain America.

A lot of gamers might look back at the Nintendo Power Glove as one of the worst gaming decisions that Nintendo ever made, but I've always believed they were just ahead of their time.

I could be wrong though, it's not the first time.

And while most of those gloves ended up in landfills or, in the case of my Retro-loving gamer hubby, in his office closet along with a couple of Virtual Boys, for Robot Chicken animator, Dillon Markey, the Glove really does allow him to "Play With Power".

See, Even Lucas From The Wizard Thought It Was Cool

Or, more to the point, "Animate With Power" thanks to a few nerd hacks.

Sometimes even the shitiest stuff can be turned into beautiful, useful things...you know, someone should probably embroider that thought on a pillow or something, that was awesome.

WTF FRIDAY: Here's Your "Over the Top" Arm Wrestling Moment

$

By Elizabeth Weitz

There are two movies starring Sylvester Stallone that I don't understand my attraction to: Cobra and Over the Top. I've tried to decipher the reasoning behind this through intense sessions of therapy but all my therapist and I could come up with is an aversion to films that are "Good" and/or "Worthy of Being Watched".

Then he put me on Cymbalta.

If you are unfamiliar with these movies, Cobra is the flick where Crime is the Disease and Sylvester Stallone is the Cure and Over the Top is the film where Stallone is a truck driver/pro arm wrestler who is trying to win back the affections of his wealthy son by winning a competition in which men with arm veins hold hands competitively.

To be honest, I kinda like the arm wrestling movie more because I'm very sentimental about fathers wanting their kids to love them through the metaphorical use of the movie montage.

I Wanna Be a Macho Man (Randy Savage)

If you were a kid into professional wrestling during the 80s, your favorite, without question was Hulk Hogan. He was Vince McMahon’s very own market researched, live-action Superman and it was damn near impossible for the pre-pubescent set not to devour anything remotely related to the man.

I remember one day telling my dad that Hulk Hogan was the best wrestler ever.

Dad, not being a dick, didn’t tell his eight-year-old son he was wrong. At least, not in so many words.

Instead, he just nodded his head and said it was his opinion that “Macho Man” Randy Savage was the best.

At the time, being fully immersed in kayfabe, I couldn’t fathom the idea that anyone could possibly entertain the notion that Hogan wasn’t the best. It was akin to blasphemy, I remember actually being angry that my dad would suggest that Macho Man was the best.

Of course, he was right.
