THE GAMBLER (review)

$

Review by Clay N Ferno
Produced by Irwin Winkler, Robert Chartoff,
Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, David Winkler
Screenplay by William Monahan
Based on The Gambler by James Toback
Directed by Rupert Wyatt
Starring Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman,
Brie Larson, Michael K. Williams, Jessica Lange,
Emory Cohen, George Kennedy, Richard Schiff

Mark Wahlberg stars in a remake of 1974’s The Gambler directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Escapist). No, not Kenny Rogers as The Gambler, that came out in 1980!  Wahlberg takes on the role of Jim Bennett, a college professor with a knack for getting in deep with the wrong kinds of people while feeding his gambling habit.

The rest of the cast features heavy hitters Jessica Lange as Jim’s long-suffering rich mother, John Goodman as Frank the whale and one of our favorite actors from HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and The Wire, Michael Kenneth Williams.

Brie Larsen (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) is Amy Phillips, a literature student working off her student loans nights at an upscale underground Hollywood casino. Amy knows her professor’s secret but is not the only student to be affected by the Bennett’s actions—mirroring points in the original film.

There is more than debt resolution and distracted teaching in this film, however. Wahlberg delivers a serious performance of a man bordering on being out of control with his habits but not an addict.

There may be more to what we see behind Jim Bennett’s blackjack face.

Spend the Last Remaining Days of 2014 Binge-Watching 90s Commercials...I Mean, What Else Are You Doing?

I like to finish out a year the way I started it...by accomplishing very little. So why not follow me into the YouTube oblivion as I watch 136 videos (of varying length) filled with the 90s TV commercials that once annoyed me and now, for whatever reason, seem tinged with the golden glow of nostalgia.

I'm not sure what mental state I'll be in once I finish them, but at least I won't remember all the 2014 New Year's resolutions I failed to accomplish.

Enter binge-watch heaven after the break.

A Very Brady Epilogue

Written by Stefan Blitz

There's no doubt that for millions of people growing up in the Seventies, the Brady family played a somewhat significant part of their childhood.

The Brady Bunch ended after five seasons in 1974, and for many of us, our earliest connection with Mike, Carol, Greg, Marcia, Peter, Jan, Bobby, Cindy, Alice and Tiger were during the series earliest runs in syndication.

One of the secrets to the accessibility of the series is that with six kids, there was always someone who the viewer could relate to.  And as a testament to both creator Sherwood Schwartz, adult stars Robert Reed, Florence Henderson and Ann B. Davis and the parents of the six younger actors, the Brady Kids (as we'll refer to them from here on out: Barry Williams, Maureen McCormick, Christopher Knight, Eve Plumb, Mike Lookinland and Susan Olsen), made sure that despite their success, they remained grounded.

Although an animated series, The Brady Kids aired from 1972-1974, the final cancellation of the series occurred following a little on-set turmoil.

If Loving Alex P. Keaton Is Wrong, Then I Never Want to Be Right (Wing)

I'm a die-hard bleeding heart liberal who fell in love with a Reganomics-loving conservative named Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) and I'm not afraid to admit it, and, although our love was completely one-sided (me) and lasted only 30-minutes a week for six years during the early-to-late 80s , I truly believe that it molded me into the woman I am today...a commie-pinko liberal who still crushes hard on dudes who are morally objectionable to my soul.

See, in 1982 when my generation was evolving into actual human beings (I consider that to be around 9 years old when you can start to see through the bullshit that your parents have been spreading out for you- i.e.- Santa, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, etc.) and the world as we know it was heading thickly into WWIII with Russia (as well as a high unemployment rate, high inflation, the S&L scandals and other social catastrophes that made young people say "Fuck It, I'm just going to play Atari until we all blow up") a comforting TV Show called Family Ties was put on the air that pitted Hippie parents, Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter), against their Conservative son Alex and consumer whore daughter Mallory (Justine Bateman)...and other daughter Jennifer (Tina Yothers) (but really, no one gave a shit about Jennifer so let's eliminate her from our collective memory...come to think of it, no one cared about their youngest son Andrew (Brian Bonsall) either). I say comforting because, for a lot of us, our parents were those former Hippies trying desperately to hold on to the values that they held so dear while battling the tide of seductive 80s conservatism that promised a better world if you only gave into supporting the very rich.

This dichotomy of evolving values and social mores may have played out weekly on TV for our amusement, with Steven and Elyse fighting the good fight (albeit in a nice expensive home) while their offspring enjoyed the co-opting of their youth by a Capitalistic America which taught them that Greed Is Good...and wholly embodied by one Alex P. Keaton, the poster boy for the compassionate conservative movement who stood for everything that his parents (and I) hated, but it also marked a turning point in what I would find sexually attractive once puberty struck.

...Which, Ironically, Is Also What Happens When Someone Sees Me Naked For the First Time

I have spent the last few days in bed, not because I'm sick or anything, but because I have decided to binge-watch as much stuff in my Netflix queue as humanly possible before the usual "TV Migraine" kicks in, rendering me even more useless than I already am. But even as I sift through movies like Computer Chess, I Saw the Devil and Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1, I can't help but think back to those earlier days of my youth when the idea of being able to watch virtually anything I wanted, when I wanted, seemed fantastical enough that sci-fi writers like Heinlein, Asimov or hell, even someone as bad as John Norman (whose Gor series is virtually unreadable) would have dedicated a few page to.

But here we are, in the future, with the world of cinema streaming for my pleasure, and yet part of me still yearns for the late night horror flicks which would occasionally show up, unexpectedly, on one of the UHF channels coming out of my family's huge, unmovable, console TV (A TV pushed so far away from the actual couch that if you really wanted to see anything you had to throw down a few pillows from you bed in front of it and hope that the freezing cold drifting up from the linoleum floor wouldn't somehow cause you paralysis).

And It Only Takes 10 Grown Men To Move It 3"

From director Clint Eastwood comes “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, whose skills as a sniper made him a hero on the battlefield. But there was much more to him than his skill as a sharpshooter.

Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world.

Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

A two-time Oscar nominee for his work in “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle,” Cooper heads the cast, which also includes Sienna Miller, Luke Grimes, Jake McDorman, Cory Hardrict, Kevin Lacz, Navid Negahban and Keir O’Donnell.

For your chance to attend the advanced screening of AMERICAN SNIPER on Monday, January 12, at 7pm at the AMC Boston Common, please go to www.gofobo.com/RSVP and enter the code FOG8903.

I Hear Mash-Ups In The Air Tonight, Oh Lord...

Yep, Phil and Biggie mashed up, peoples

I've been listening to a lot of Phil Collins lately, mostly at night when I can lay in the dark and cry because that's what you do when you listen to songs like Against All Odds or Separate Lives or Groovy Kind of Love and think back to your awkward teen years when everyone around you at Michelle Daquilanto's house party were making out, except for you, and the ghostly echoed sound of Phil's voice wrapped around you like a loser blanket, coaxing you into a deep depression that could only be remedied by drinking as much Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine as humanly possible.

But I digress.

What I meant to say is that Phil Collins was pretty much the guy sentimental teens looked to in order to express that sappiness inside of themselves that they never wanted to admit to, an,d whenever the shit hits the emotional fan in my adult life, I turn to the only man who can comfort me with melodic sadness...one Mr. Collins.

Of course, it's a different story when it comes to killing your feelings with pharmaceuticals. When the Cymbalta/Lyrica/Prozac/Zoloft kicks in, what I want to hear is a Phil Collins mash-up with some meat in it, something that has a "Fuck Yeah!" attitude twinged with just a touch suicidal tendencies...I'm sort of particular with my musical mood swings.

And, although I am not a religious person, when the need for a spiritual melancholy mash-up strike, I turn to my virtual church, YouTube, the only place that supplies me with exactly what I need, when I need it.

It's kind of like Smack in that way.

After the break, you too can enjoy the smooshed-together hymns for the dead-soul damned like me featuring :R.E.M, David Bowie, Queen and yes, even the Notorious B.I.G.

Praise Nyquil!

Videos after the break.

So THAT'S What Happened To Mayor McCheese...

I remember the day that McDonald's came to McMinnville, Oregon and filled the lives of reasonably fit children with enough fat, sugar and salt to turn us all into addicted fatties. I remember the smell of lard boiling, the weird brown and orange uniforms topped off with a paper hat and that $.10 could get you a baby cone filled with a vanilla custard-like ice cream that would send you into a sugar-high.

But most of all, I remember McDonaldland, a place that ripped off Sid and Marty Kroft and was inhabited by characters like Ronald McDonald, Grimace (whatever the fuck he was), Mayor McCheese, the Hamburglar,  the Fry Guys, Captain Crook, the Professor and Officer Big Mac, whose visage made for some entertaining times on the McDonald's outdoor playground (you could actually climb inside and sit in his skull...FOR FUN).

Yep, those were some good times.

But then something happened, one-by-one the core characters of McDonaldland disappeared, without warning, without explanation and those of us who grew up with these weird advertising concepts were left to ponder their exit out of popular consciousness during those long nights when we drank way too much and ached for a pink slime cheese burger wrapped up in greasy yellow paper.

What the hell happened to Mayor McCheese?

GOTHAM S01E11: "Rogue's Gallery" (review)

So with this episode we’ve officially entered the second half of Gotham’s debut season.

Here’s hoping that it won’t be as uneven as the first half but if this episode is anything to go by, it doesn’t instill much confidence in me.

When we last saw Gordon, he was demoted to Arkham security guard which is where this episode picks up. Someone in the asylum has been secretly electroshocking the inmates and it’s up to Gordon to solve the mystery. Predictably, this leads us on a wild goose chase with plenty of red herrings and misdirection along the way.

As always, let’s break it down.

DARK SUMMER (review)

Review by Dean Galanis
Produced by Ross M. Dinerstein
Written by Mike Le
Directed by Paul Solet
Starring Peter Stormare, Grace Phipps,
Stella Maeve, Maestro Harrell, Keir Gilchrist

The first horror effort in eight years from the promising director of the motherhood jitters flick Grace, Dark Summer is a slight, minor yet diverting and stylish little flick.

Keir Gilchrist headlines as Daniel, who must spend the first summer after graduation under house arrest for stalking a pretty, yet socially awkward, female student.  The officer in charge of his case (Fargo’s Peter Stormare, clearly having fun) forbids him from leaving the property, from having minors in the house, and under no circumstances is he to go online (he’d hacked into the girl’s emails).

His two best friends, Abby (Stella Maeve) and Kevin (Maestro Harrell) come for a visit, untraceable laptop in tow.

Late, while surreptitiously chatting on Skype, Daniel witnesses a horrible event. Soon after, he’s convinced his house is haunted.

And of course, he’s unable to leave.

GHOST RIDER: A School Bus Safety Film Not Starring Nic Cage, Unfortunately

The Ghostly Apparition of Teresa Is Here To Educate You Kevin...Kevin, Are You Listening?

Since I am old and barely on this side of decrepit, I have no idea if the children of today are forced to watch weird educational short films created for the sole purpose of brainwashing them into cleaning their body parts more often, or avoiding their sexuality, or whatever social behavior/basic idiocy is deemed upsetting to adults who have access to grant money and a 16mm camera. But I hope so, I really do, because some of my best memories in school are of sitting in the dark watching kids, like myself, get schooled by awesome parental propaganda in order to stifle our individuality.

And while I appreciate the oddly, inappropriate intrusion to "help" the youth learn the correct behaviors that will guarantee their success in today's world (Obey, Consume, Conform, Sleep)  in the case of this particular short however (Ghost Rider) it is not so much the social activities of youngsters that have the filmmakers worried, as it seems to be the massive amounts of school bus crashes that had to have occurred in the early 80s where screaming children were smashed into gelatinous gobs of goo all because they didn't understand the basics of School Bus Safety.

Stupid kids.

Of course, I'm guessing that most school bus crashes wouldn't end in piles of dead Middle Schoolers if the buses had a) oh, I don't know, SEATBELTS or b) SEATBELTS!!!!

THE SLAM BOOK: My Generation's Version of Facebook

#6 Has Great Taste In Music

Social media...it can be one of the greatest things ever or the worst, depending on how you look at it. For some, the age of over-sharing is embarrassing and uncomfortable, for others, it is a wonderful way to stalk your former high school crushes, but whichever side of the social media fence you fall on, one thing is for sure...it's here to stay, probably forever (as are all those pictures of you drinking beer on a work/school day).

Which is why I am so thankful that my teenage stupidity is locked away forever, only to live inside the faulty memories of former classmates and the spiral-bound notebooks that circulated throughout Junior and Senior High called Slam Books (that are probably deteriorating in a plastic garbage bag in a dump in Oregon as we speak) which had the potential to destroy the self-esteem of people far more acutely than anything ever put up on Facebook.

I don't know exactly when these emotional time bombs came into being, but for my generation of teenage girls, all I know is that as soon as it made an appearance, the gloves came off.
