WINTER IS COMING: Cosplaying In The Cold

Winter in my hometown Manchester UK is dark, cold and very, very wet.

But in a city that has so much fun stuff to do on a regular basis despite the season, like film & comic conventions, games expos and of course Halloween and Bonfire Night; a cosplayer can still find ways of keeping themselves warm and a smile on their face.

Now we’ve reached the season of colds, coughs and flu I thought it best to advise you on the best and most practical winter cosplays to keep you wrapped up and warm until the sun comes out again next in spring (or if you live in Manchester, you’ll have to wait even longer than that…)

Due to this traffic cop’s lack of waterproof coat and may layers of sweaters and wool, this picture actually looks like it could have been taken in the Summer during one of our surprise downpours. My city sounds like an awesome place to live right?

Superman Unchained #9
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Jim Lee, Dustin Nguyen, Scott Williams
Colorists: Alex Sinclair, John Kalisz
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $4.99

With several publishing delays, drastic character changes (Lex Luthor being a member of the Justice League) and the Superman ongoing series getting a new superstar creative team in the form of Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr, it was obvious that Superman Unchained wasn’t long for this world, even though it has been the quintessential telling of the Man of Steel’s exploits in the New 52.

Superman is faced with a choice instituted by Lex Luthor. To save the planet, Superman will have to seemingly take his own life. This isn’t new ground because Superman has been put in countless situations over the years where the selfless hero makes the sacrifice play in order to save the day.

However, Scott Snyder accomplishes an impressive feat with this moment by bringing back that much sought-after feeling of inspiration.

To do this, he uses Lex Luthor’s voice to hammer the point home that Superman is a candle instead of a beacon of light because he is just a man who stumbles through life. It’s during this poignant dialog that we see Superman fly up into space towards an armada of warships, without a plan. The no-strategy part is what Luthor was alluding to when he mentioned stumbling through life but, Superman knew he was the only one capable of stopping the aliens approaching the planet. So, he flies straight ahead, prepared for the worst, and hoping to somehow deliver the best outcome.

A lot of artists have drawn Superman over the years but there is something about the way Jim Lee illustrates him that brings about such splendor. From flight to fight, Lee’s tells an inspired story which shines during five pages of wordless imagery where one minute, Superman is clinching his fist with a look on his face that could topple a mountain and the next, to a weakened and frail state due to a red sun onslaught where it appears that he is about to make the ultimate sacrifice.

This conclusion is bittersweet in a sense that while we were provided this nine issue arc with an ending it so richly deserves, but it’s still over.

Wraith proved to be a phenomenal antagonist because he challenged Superman on such an innate psychological level that you almost forgot about the big brother physical strength he had over him as well. While it may be back to the mediocre storytelling for the Last Son of Krypton, this series is a perfect example of how to portray him in 2014.

Score: 4.5 out of 5

Kickstart FIST OF JUSTICE #7 and READ Issue #1!

$

Nostalgia can be an ugly beast.  It's been said that every comic book reader's Golden Age contains mostly things they read when they were 12 or 13 years old.

I was fortunate.  Much of the stuff I read then holds up.  Byrne on Alpha Flight and Fantastic Four, Simonson on Thor, Claremont and Paul Smith on X-Men, Wolfman and Perez on New Teen Titans, Stern and Romita, Jr. on Amazing Spider-Man, Moore and Bissette on Swamp Thing, Levitz and Giffen on Legion of Super-Heroes, and many more.

Comic books were fun and exciting and had a kinetic energy that was marred a few years later with the industry's focus on making titles "grim and gritty" post the success of Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns.

In recent years there have been some notable titles and creators that have breathed new energy in the medium and the superhero genre in particular.

Fist of Justice is one of those titles.

Fist of Justice was the super-heroic defender of Charm City until he made a fatal mistake that ended his career. He threw in the towel and was locked away and soon forgotten. But his power -- though dormant -- did not leave him. Now it has returned and resurrected FOJ -- restoring him as defender of a city dealing with the new villains of the 21st century. Villains who are tougher, stronger, and meaner than ever.

Created by Mike Imboden and Ed Dukeshire, the series returned following a long hiatus thanks to it's Kickstarter supporters.  Now, funds for the latest issue are being raised via Kickstarter, and although it's already reached it's goal, incentives have been added and future issues are already in the works.

If you're a comic fan who misses the fun of superheroes, but isn't interested in a rehash or self-aware parody, I can't recommend this title any higher.

Check out the Kickstarter here and for $50 you get the trade and all remaining issues to date.  A fantastic read and a great holiday gift!

And after the jump read the very first issue that was also released as a Free Comic Book Day Title and is included in the Fist of Justice TPB!

Learn to Insult Your Minions In This Super-Cut of Skeletor's Best Slams

Skeletor might be He-Man's archenemy but to those who work for him, he is one Grade-A asshole.

Case-in-point, Skeletor's singular passion in life might be plotting the demise of Prince Adam so he can learn the secrets kept in Castle Greyskull, but if you just so happen to be on the team that was foiled during one of his usual poorly thought-out plans, old Yellow Skull would be equally happy to ladle out some serious smack that would make you cry late at night.

Seriously, he's a real douchebag.

To understand what kind of jerk-off Skeletor really was, watch this super-cut of the kind of insults that slid easily out of his mouth hole.

You might be surprised how many of your bosses picked up their management skills from him.

Make Your Own Version of Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey...Why You Feel The Need To Tart That Sh*t Up Is Beyond Me But, Whatever

In Europe they seem to value the health and well-being of their citizens, from providing free healthcare and a debt-free college education to pulling Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey off the shelves because it contains propylene glycol (a solvent used in anti-freeze as well as food, plastics and perfume). But here in the U.S, we like our life to be one big maze of hazards, so, in our liquor stores you can still find bottles of whiskey tainted with chemicals and cinnamon sticks sitting on the shelves and dammit, we like it that way.

Of course, if you happen to be a college co-ed filled with a Hippie spirit and a desire to down a bottle of ruined whiskey, PopSugar has posted a DIY video on how to make your very own batch of Fireball that you and your friends can enjoy before going out on the town...or, you could simply save some of the money your mom and dad send you every month, purchase a bottle of 10 Year-Old Three Ships Single Malt Whiskey and reflect on why you seem to ruin everything you touch.

It's your choice.

How to Pick a Gold Cup Winner at Cheltenham

$

How often do you have the feeling that you’re out of your depth on a subject that everyone else around you seems to know a lot about? For example, if you never watch soccer and suddenly everyone’s talking about the World Cup, you suddenly have to read up on it, find out a bit about the sport so that you know what on earth everyone else is talking about.

Another example is horse racing. If you happen to go to a day at the races, would you know how to pick a winning horse? Part of the fun of watching horse racing is having a bet; it’s almost rude not to. But you don’t just want to pick a name out of a hat – you want to have a chance of winning.

The biggest National Hunt racing festival takes place every March in the UK – the Cheltenham Festival. During the four day event there are a series of top class races, with eye watering amounts of cash attached to them. The most well-known is the Gold Cup, which always takes place on the Friday of the meeting, but each day of the Festival has its own Champions race. These include the Champion Hurdle, the World Hurdle and the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

So, how do you pick a Gold Cup winner at Cheltenham?

An INTERSTELLAR Film Fail

I've not really had a point of view on Film vs Digital on the big screen, other than nostalgically and emotionally being attached to the celluloid option.

After sitting through Christopher Nolan'sInterstellar in 70mm this past weekend, I'm going to lean a lot more towards celebrating the age of the DCP.

Now, before you start shouting "alright, alright, alright," at my blasphemous judgement, consider this.

I love 70mm. I've had experience threading it many times as a projectionist during my teenage years, when it was pretty commonplace for blockbuster titles.

But technology has advanced, and those days are gone.

Patema lives in an underground world of tunnels, the long-abandoned ruins of a giant industrial complex. Though she is a princess, she is held back by the rules imposed by the elders of her clan. One day when she is exploring in a forbidden zone, she is startled by a strange bat-like creature and tumbles headlong into a void – and out into the wide open world above the surface, a place with reversed physics, where if she let go she would “fall up” into the sky and be lost forever.

WELCOME TO THE SPACE SHOW
With an intergalactic cast of thousands, Koji Masunari’s colorfully explosive feature revolves around five elementary school kids sent on an unexpected trip to space. While looking for their missing class pet, the children find and rescue a dog that turns out to be an alien, and he invites them to visit the moon as a reward for helping him. NOCTURNA

ANIMATION GEEK: Marcel, King of Tervuren by Tom Schroeder

In this Greek tragedy as acted out by Belgian roosters (which is how director and animator Tom Schroeder describes this tale) a very resourceful Cock manages to outwit the Bird Flu, alcohol and sleeping pill abuse, repeated attempts at capture and an overthrow by a vengeful son.

While the above paragraph might sound like something Hollywood green-lit after a few potent drinks in it, the story is completely true and beautifully told by Ann Berckmoes, Marcel's kinda-sorta owner who witnessed this epic poem come to life (even Homer would be jealous) and who, judging by her tone of voice as she recounts the adventures of Marcel, is as completely in love with him as you will be once you hear his tale.

As the old adage goes, "Life is stranger than fiction" and, after watching this animated short, you will thank the Muses for this one.

Why Do We Like Our Own Farts? Believe It or Not Science Has An Explanation For It

Because I like science and fart jokes, this AsapSCIENCE episode concerning our own joyful inhalation of expelled stink is right up my anal alley. And, I expect, right up yours.

While that might sound gross, let's get honest here for a second, we all fart and we all like it so why not embrace that fact and try and understand why, when we fill our shorts with the smell of buttered popcorn, we take a big healthy whiff of it.

No one said education was pretty people, but the alternative, remaining stupid, smells a hell of a lot worse than a Taco Bell fart.

So man up and get your learnin' on after the break.

By the way, I just let out a squeaker while writing this and it smells like an NYC dirty water dog...delicious.

HUMP DAY is Kitteh Day! Yay! Sweet, A$$hole Kitteh Day

I've been sick in bed for the last three days, dry heaving, sweating profusely and falling into short awkward comas filled with delirium, but do you think any of my animals give a shit?

Nope.

In fact, last night, while my dog feasted from the litter box (only to burp cat shit into my face at 3 am) my cats decided to re-enact Wrestlemania III with each cat taking on the personalities of Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan and wrecking the entire bedroom. While cleaning up their rampage and trying not to black out from a blinding headache, I swear that I heard both cats summarizing the fight to my dog (who, I have to surmise, took on the "Rowdy" Roddy Piper role and interviewed both asshole cats for the Piper's Pit segment of their late-night show) in perfect English...of course, that could just have been the fever talking.

Needless to say, I didn't sleep much.

But today both cats are busy taking naps on my bed while I am struggling to put two coherent sentences together and that's okay, for I understand my place in this house...that of lowly serf. And how do I know this without a doubt? Because of videos like the one after the break that demonstrate perfectly just how little cats think of us and how they see life in general.

So enjoy...I'm going to go and try to get an hour or two of sleep before I am summoned for dinner duty and the evenly distribution of catnip toys.

Mark Waid’s Insufferable is headed into Volume 3 this week and he joins us to tell us what to expect from this father/son super hero team-up book that continues to push the envelope of genre and format.

Back in May we talked with Mark about his app and subscription model, and today we check in on to see what is working for Thrillbent Comics and the challenges writing digital comic strips for the app that the creators face.

In terms of story, Volume 3 or The Complete 3rd Season, has the insufferable Galahad and his father Nocturnus clicking on all cylinders as they go after their publicist’s Meg’s abductors. Will they be in sync for long, or will Nocturnus strangle his fool kid’s arrogant neck?

Mark gives us some insight!
