Until Death Do They Part...Then They Respawn

I got married in October and let me tell you, planning a wedding is ridiculously stressful, not because of the seemingly endless tasks ahead but mostly because other people feel it is their prerogative to give you their opinion and kindly remind you of all the things you absolutely must do. Me and my now husband Matt, ignored all of that and did only what we wanted.

After several discussions and lots of plotting, this seemed to be to incorporate as many video game elements into our wedding day as possible, as gaming has been a huge part of our respective lives before we met and continues to be a huge part of our lives together, so of course they had to play a central role in a day that is supposed to reflect who we are.

Portal 2 holds a special meaning for us. Not only is it a fun and intelligent puzzle game, it is a literal analogy for our relationship; working together like Atlas and P-body, life is a brutal series of cruel and twisted obstacles and the only way to overcome these challenges is through patient, highly communicative teamwork.

If you've ever wondered how strong your friendships/relationships are, play the co-op mode on Portal 2...if you dare.

THE TOP TEN CARTOONS OF 1935

Continuing in our series here, I’ll be covering the ten cartoons I consider to be the best of 1935. At this point, cartoons are veering away from the surrealistic rubberhose style of the early ‘30s and moving towards the sort of charming fairy tales that Disney had popularized with his Silly Symphonies series, leading to a great many cute cartoons along the lines of the year’s Academy Award winner Three Orphan Kittens.

But that doesn’t mean all of the weirdness has been removed from the animation world, and this list features some oddballs from studios like Ub Iwerks and Van Beuren, along with a slew of Disney titles, of course. The most notable new character to debut in 1935 is a certain stuttering pig from Warner Bros., who appeared with a great many other funny animal characters in Friz Freleng’s I Haven’t Got a Hat.

Anyway, on with the list:

Tennessee Graphic Designer Chad Malone Finds Money in the Banana Stand,
Taking Home the $1,000 Cash Prize and Having His Artwork Selected as the
Winning Cover Art for the Season Four DVD Boxed Set

The final countdown is over! Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and series creator Mitch Hurwitz have completed the search for the ultimate “Arrested Development” fan, selecting Chad Malone from Tennessee as the winner of the Season Four fan art contest. After scouring through hundreds of entries devoted to the Bluth clan and hilarious Emmy®-winning series*, Malone’s design was chosen as the cover for the “Arrested Development” Season Four DVD, available everywhere December 16. “I consider winning this contest to be one of my greatest personal achievements,” said Malone. “Everyone knows that I’m a huge fan of the series. Entering this contest was NOT a huge mistake!”

Welcome to Season Four of the Emmy®-winning series about the ethically questionable but unquestionably hilarious Bluth family. This season, when Michael asks Gob to help fill the vacant Sudden Valley housing development, the isolated location becomes a selling point to sex offenders, including…Tobias? After Buster’s testimony helps land Lucille in “prison,” her solution to hostile inmates is to build a great wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, where Oscar and George Sr. have a scam going. Lindsay seeks spirituality, Maeby likes high school too much and George-Michael has a very unlikely rival in “Arrested Development’s” funniest season yet!

Review by Benn Robbins
Produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan, Lynda Obst
Written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan
Directed by Christopher Nolan
Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway,
Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Bill Irwin,
Ellen Burstyn, Casey Affleck

Interstellar is a hefty film. I am not even talking about its almost 3 hour running time either.

Christopher Nolan has presented us with his personal 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Now before you all fly off the handle and tell me there is no way this film is as good as 2001, let me remind you that when 2001 came out in 1968 it was met with stunningly bad reviews.

Later, of course, it is heralded as one of the greatest pieces of Science Fiction film making ever made.

Has Mr. Nolan achieved this?

Not entirely but I believe that it comes close.

Only time will tell.

BIG HERO 6 (review)

Disney redeems itself, in my eyes, after the horrendous Frozen with Big Hero 6.

I am one of those anomalies that despised the film Frozen. I thought it was a poorly written and trite piece of filmmaking rehashing a story that they did so much better with Lilo and Stitch.

Big Hero 6 isn’t a phenomenal film and it doesn’t try to be. It succeeds in being fun and exciting, touching and thoughtful.

As my good friend once said, “There is no greater love story than the love between a bot and his giant robot.”

And this film continues to carry the torch.

The Unearthed Atari Games From The Alamogordo, New Mexico Dump Go Up On eBay

Earlier this year the myth that a bunch of Atari games were buried in a dump after the disastrous release of the E.T game was finally confirmed when a shitload of games were unearthed at a Alamogordo, New Mexico dump. To commemorate this occasion The Tularosa Basin Historical Society of Alamogordo has put a few of those games up on eBay (including E.T.) so that dorks like me can bid on a piece of gaming history.

While the release of these games will most definitely help the museum raise funds for itself (and they will begin to release even more after the the eBay auction closes on Nov. 13), the sale of these crushed games also help to build buzz for the documentary of the event (Atari: Game Over) which will premiere on Nov 20th on Xbox consoles and on Xboxvideo.com (hmmm, I wonder who financed the documentary?).

You know, I need to help funding my beer brewing hobby, maybe I can crush a bunch of Sega CD games with my car and bury them in my backyard for a few years...anyone interested in those?

Trailer for the doc after the break.

Win STYLE WARS on Blu-ray

Blu-ray release of the classic hip-hop documentary.

Style Wars, the legendary hip-hop documentary and timeless film classic, the indispensable record of a golden age of youthful creativity and exploding hip hop subculture, became available on Blu-ray on November 4th, 2014.

When director Tony Silver and co-producer Henry Chalfant delivered the broadcast version of their prize-winning film to PBS in 1983, the world received its first full immersion in the phenomenon that had taken over New York City. The urban landscape was physically transformed by graffiti artists who invented a new visual language to express both their individuality, and the voice of their community.

In Style Wars, New York's ramshackle subway system is their public playground, battleground, and spectacular artistic canvas. As MC's, DJ's and B-boys rock the city with new sounds and new moves, we see street corner breakdance battles turn into performance art.

The soundtrack features classics performed by The Sugar Hill Gang, The Treacherous Three, The Fearless Four, Grand Master Flash and The Furious Five, Trouble Funk, Rammellzee / K-Rob and Dion. New York's kings of graffiti and b-boys own a special place in the hip hop pantheon. In Style Wars they continue to empower new generations with the original spirit of hip hop, as it reached out from underground tunnels, from uptown streets, clubs and playgrounds, to the world at large.

GoldieBlox Takes On The Barbie Doll In This Radically Awesome Ad

To try and make toys less sexist for young girls and to get them thinking outside the pink glittered beauty box, GoldieBlox (who is best known for their Rube Goldberg "Princess Machine" video) has released an action figure that will hopefully get young girls interested in creating things rather than just playing dress-up.

And to get that point across, GoldieBlox has made another incredibly awesome ad that is one part 1984, and one part Girl Power.

I can't even tell you how excited I am to buy up everything GoldieBlox has for my niece once she gets past the toddler stage. 'Cause that little girl is going to grow up knowing she can be anything she wants...including a game designer, engineer, code writer or even a pop culture nerd blogger like her aunt.

Yep, this is gonna be fun.

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES: Space Camp (1986)

$

I wanted to go to Space Camp when I was a kid because becoming an astronaut was as wondrous and cool of a job as anyone could want. Then I learned I was horrible at math (although that was rectified some 30+ years later when I went back to college and had a professor who made math fun) and that dream died.

Of course, I can relive that old longing via the 1986 highly improbable film Space Camp starring a bunch of people who are kinda famous (Kelly Preston, Tate Donovan, Leaf (Joaquin) Phoenix, Lea Thompson, Tom Skerrit).

The movie was a critical and commercial flop (probably due to the fact that it was released soon after The Challenger accident) but it is weirdly fun and watchable despite it having a sentient robot named Max who is responsible for sending the kids into space (why is this robot at Space Camp anyway?).

Oh and for the people out there who haven't quite gotten over their Kelly Preston Fetish (and I completely understand, I too watched the movie Mischief as a teenager) she plays kind of a slut who has an eidetic memory so yeah, she is completely worthy of attending Space Camp.

Movie after the break. (note: the movie has Spanish subtitles, just turn them off if they bother you)

Penny Dora and the Wishing Box #1

Writer: Michael Stock

Artist: Sina Grace

Publisher: Image
 Comics
Price: $2.99

I chose to read this comic purely based on the name alone. I love stories about Pandora and everything that goes along with them. What I got was a lot different than what I expected, but in the best way possible.

Penny Dora and the Wishing Box #1 is refreshingly sweet and fun. Michael Stock, with help from his daughter, has really created something fun for everyone; with a modern style family and a teenager you can get behind.

The story is about Penny Dora and a Christmas package that was left on her doorstep. On Christmas day Penny and her mother open the mystery gift to find an old wooden box.

The box was empty but Penny wanted to save it anyway. Her mother thought it was a bad joke gift sent by Penny’s father.

Penny shoved the box under her bed and went to sleep. In the middle of the night the box began to make weird noises and a crazy light was coming out of it. She picked up the box and noticed that it was like brand new again. The old wood was no longer aged, the paint was fresh, and the hinges were shiny. Just as she want to look inside a voice came out of it and asked her to make a wish. Being a teenager, she dropped it on the ground. Once she was no longer holding on to it the box reverted back to it old aged self. Being afraid of it she shoved it back under her bed and forgot about it.

Well, at least until her friend came over and wanted to see it. She grabbed it out of her hands and crammed it back under the bed. That night her cat, Iggy, crept into the room and found the box. It asked him to make a wish and Iggy wished for his favorite thing in all the world; ham.

There are a lot of things to like about this book. The writing feels like it comes from the heart. A man writing a comic based on a story that his daughter wrote is so sweet. It’s a special kind of awesome. The back matter couple of pages explain how this book came about and it’s honestly heartwarming. You can just tell there was a ton of love that went into this book.

The art also brings you into the unique world. There are a couple of panels where Penny’s face is drawn in a cute chibi sort of way and it brought a smile to my face. This book has a playfulness that works really well. The whole team did a great job bringing this story to life.

Score: 4 out of 5

“Attacks its final season with admirable gusto… splendid” - Variety

Over the course of its first four seasons, Boardwalk Empire, the hit HBO series from Emmy Award® winner Terence Winter and Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese, garnered critical accolades for its top-rate performances, beautiful costumes and set pieces and breathtaking cinematography.

Concluding a powerful and groundbreaking run, Season 5 jumps forward six full years to 1931. In stark contrast with the Roaring ‘20s, the country is in the throes of the Great Depression, and with the end of Prohibition in sight, Nucky is looking to legitimize himself by forging alliances with liquor producers. Find out how Nucky’s story ends when Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Fifth Season comes to Blu-ray with Digital HD ($79.98) and DVD ($59.99) on January 13, 2015, featuring four audio commentaries and eight “Scouting the Boardwalk” location pieces that take fans behind-the-scenes of the final season. MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: The Bangles- Want You

$

June of '82 saw the release of some pretty heavy hitters: Built For Speed by the Stray Cats, Blondie's The Hunter (which had her version of For Your Eyes Only on it), Oingo Boingo's Nothing to Fear and yes, even Screaming Blue Murder by Girlschool. But the one album that really stood out for me was The Bangles' self-titled EP and the song Want You, written and sung by band mate Vicki Peterson (who never really got the due she deserved as a vocalist).

Yeah, yeah, Susanna Hoffs might have been the eye candy (and a damn good singer) but I always dug Vicki the best and in this song she not only turns The Bangles into a California surf and garage band that sounds pretty groovy, she makes you want to drag that old smelly couch from the basement up to the driveway, crack open some wine coolers and lay around singing some tunes while wearing some goddamn neon socks (layered, of course).

Now those were some good times.

If SAUL BASS Designed The Game of Thrones Opening Credits

You may not know the name Saul Bass but his iconic movie opening credits to such films as The Man with the Golden Arm, North by Northwest, Psycho and even Scorsese films like Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino should all be burned into that part of your brain that feeds on design awesomeness.

Yeah, he's that guy.

And in this homage to Mr. Bass we get to see the opening of The Game of Thrones look not unlike some of his earlier groovy work, not to mention a 60s-style jazzy version of the theme song done by Scott Bradlee feat. Dave Koz.

Catch it after the break...oh, and you might want to shake up a cold cocktail too...it's that kind of opening credit sequence.

SCIENCE GEEK: The Ebola Virus Explained

I am sick in bed today and, after a quick search on WebMd, I'm pretty sure that I have Ebola...or the flu...or maybe I'm having a chronic pain flare-up...either way I feel like shit.

Unfortunately as a lay person I don't know much about Ebola other than blood drips from your orifices (kind of like what happened to Lukas Haas' character in the film Testament, although that was about a nuclear detonation and not Ebola) and to educate myself on the disease that some news organizations say will wipe civilization off the map, I naturally turn to animation since the viral-based horror show of Ebola doesn't seem so bad when you're being educated about it in a cartoon style.

Who knew crying tears of bloody mucus could be so cute?
