How The Sci-Fi Genre Continues To Rise

$

0

Every genre that is utilised by film directors, authors and game developers provide their own individualistic qualities that come together to create a story that captivates a national or worldwide audience.

While horror contains blood-curdling moments packed with dread and terror, romance is based upon the beauty of falling in love with another person and the special moments a couple share together. Science fiction may be considered the most unique genre of them all, as it does not require any element of truth or fact to be wonderfully gripping and believable at the same time.

Its popularity continues to grow as science fiction has become an integral feature across a number of industries, with the Doctor Who casino games on Uptown Aces illustrating just how far the genre can be utilised to create an attractive and successful product.

How To Understand Sexiness...Get Your Totally Acceptable Freak On!

$

If you think about it, sex is kind of weird. Sure, it feels awesome and helps to populate the world (if you're into that) but there are some aspects of the whole thing that are pretty odd, like why am I super turned on by my husband when he wears boxer briefs covered in the images of S'mores rather than his plain white underwear?

No, seriously, why is that?

If you too have questions about why certain things make you have a down-low tickle (like maybe airline pilots or Bob Barker) watch this interesting educational video on why you're not actually a deviant freak for wanting to "Do It" in a port-a-potty.

The takeaway? If it feels good, go on and do it...although you should really rethink that whole port-a-potty thing...that's totally gross.

The Theory of Everything is the extraordinary and uplifting story of one of the world’s greatest living minds, the renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, and of two people defying the steepest of odds through love. The film, based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking, is directed by Academy Award winner James Marsh (Man on Wire).

In 1963, as a cosmology student at the storied U.K. university Cambridge, Stephen (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne of
Les Misérables) is making great strides and is determined to find a “simple, eloquent explanation” for the universe. His own world opens up when he falls deeply in love with an arts major, fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones of The Invisible Woman). But, at 21 years of age, this healthy, active young man receives an earth-shattering diagnosis: motor neuron disease will attack his limbs and his abilities, leaving him with limited speech and movement, and will take his life within two years.

Jane’s love, fierce support, and determination are unwavering – and the duo weds. With his new wife fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen refuses to accept his diagnosis. Jane encourages Stephen to finish his doctorate, which includes his initial theory of the creation of the universe. They start a family, and with his newly earned and widely hailed doctorate Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of – time. As his body faces more limits, his mind continues to explore the outer limits of theoretical physics.

Together, he and Jane defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed – well into the 21st century.

For your chance to attend the advanced screening of THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING TOMORROW NIGHT, Thursday, November 6th at 7PM at the AMC Boston Common, go to www.gofobo.com/RSVP and enter the code FOGHHLT.

REBOUND (film review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz
Produced by Megan Freels and Debra Trevino
Written and Directed by Megan Freels
Starring Ashley James, Mark Scheibmeir and Wes O'Lee

Rebound (written, directed and produced by Megan Freels) is all about a bad day...like a REALLY bad day...I'm talking about the kind of day that includes you accidentally farting on a first date, but instead of just noise it also contains squishy lumps, the smell of death, your date puking...and no call for a second date.

Yeah, that kind of day.

The bad day in this case belongs to Claire (Ashley James), a pretty, struggling actress from L.A who catches her boyfriend of three years (Brett Johnson) in bed with another woman (Ali Williams) and falls completely apart.

To counteract the definite binge-eating that will take place, Claire makes the reasonable decision to return home to Chicago into the warm, safe embrace of her parents via a hopefully head-clearing road trip that starts off horrible and only gets worse from there.

Seriously, this chick would have been better served by staying in L.A., buying a case of Nutella and settling in for a Netflix marathon while wearing expandable pants.

TV Etiquette: When Is It Ok To Talk

$

Maybe I’m a crotchety old man, but a lot of people cannot seem to keep their yaps shut when watching a TV show.

They ask questions like, “how are they going to get out of that locked room?!,” as if the show will prematurely end before a key plot point is resolved. Or, they ask for a multi-season recap after a major storyline from previous episodes/seasons is referred to, requiring the show to be paused.

And then there’s my favorite: color commentary recapping what just happened three seconds ago.

"Yes...Heisenberg and Walter are the same person....."

I pretty much dread watching most TV shows with other people for fear of being taken out of the moment by repeated questions and comments. I get so irritated that I cannot stop myself from “shhhing” friends, which never ends well.

It's always a good day when a new Doc Savage adventure is released.

For those of you unfamiliar with the character, Doc Savage was the most successful pulp adventure hero of his time. From 1933 to 1949, Lester Dent and other writers penned 182 original exploits of the Man of Bronze and his iron-fisted friends, writing as Kenneth Robeson.

Scientist. Surgeon. Strongman. Superman. Doc Savage was a man without equals. He operated on a global stage, fighting supercrime, discovering lost cities, stopping wars, and uplifting a troubled mankind during the depths of the Great Depression.

Now, in these difficult times, Doc returns in a new series of untold exploits conceived by his originator and brought to life by Lester Dent’s natural successor, Will Murray.

The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage is no updating or reimagining of a classic character. This is the authentic Man of Bronze in his own era, taking on new challenges and conquering a new generation of foes—and fans.

His latest adventure, Doc Savage: The Ice Genius by Will Murray & Lester Dent, writing as Kenneth Robeson is now available in all formats.  More details after the jump.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Don't Drown Your Food by The Bod Squad...Trying To Keep Kids From Becoming Lard Asses One Cartoon PSA At A Time

If you grew up in the 70s and 80s, you might remember the Bod Squad PSAs that would run during your Saturday morning cartoons which would try and educate you on choosing better snacks than Totinos Pizza Rolls. Of course, all they really did was give you enough time between Thundercats and Dungeons and Dragons to pour yourself another bowl of Sugar Smacks, but hey, at least they had catchy songs that have lasted the test of time...seriously, I can still sing Catman Struthers' Nutty Gritty to this day without even realizing it...it's my boredom song.

So let's take a stroll down Memory Lane and revisit the days before children were all lard-asses and learn about how we shouldn't murder our food with condiments in one of my favorite PSAs, Don't Drown Your Food.

Unfortunately after all my Bod Squad education I still commit french fry homicide via ranch dressing...and frankly I don't care.

The Next Phase Is Here

In 2012, award-winning comics writer Mark Waid and writer/producer John Rogers launched Thrillbent, a digital comics webportal and an experiment in new-media comic-book publishing. Their mission statement: “To challenge 75 years’ worth of accepted ‘rules’ about what comics are and aren’t.” The commitment to this challenge continues as Thrillbent and IDW Publishing partner to bring these unique digital comics to print starting spring 2015.

“I love print comics,” said Waid, whose own personal collection is legendary. “While we have always proudly been digital-first, print was always in Thrillbent’s business plan--but for a start-up company like ours, it was cost-prohibitive. Once we proved our commitment to ongoing content--Thrillbent currently hosts literally hundreds of new comics, with more added every week--we were courted by several print publishers looking to partner. IDW was the clear choice--its track record for innovation is unbeatable and undeniable.”

TRAVEL GEEK: K'aa: A Short Film About Traveling Across The Country

$

I know that during and after the elections a lot of people feel sad and depressed about how big of assholes our elected officials are and how it appears that life in America, as we know it, seems to be going down the crapper. When that happens I go straight to my cousin Kristen Kellogg's travel blog (Border Free Productions) to watch videos of her travels in various parts of the world...jealously...sometimes I cry and write emails I never send begging her to take me with her...but that's another story.

But you know something, maybe we feel so bogged down from political attack ads and the corporate sponsorship of our government because we're supposed to, maybe that's how all this is supposed to go in order to 1984 our asses and make us apathetic drones (God, I really have to stop reading Orwell during election years) but perhaps if we remember how big and vast and beautiful the country really is we, the people, might actually wake up and say "Fuck You" to the masters of our land and take back....ah, screw it, just watch Alex Avella's incredibly moving and gorgeous short film K'aa which takes the viewer across the country from NYC to LA and reminds us that there's more to life than going on a Commie Pinko Liberal diatribe after an election.

Note to Elizabeth: Don't write posts after binge-watching cable news networks on election night. No one wants to hear it.

"Everybody Has a Secret Face:" The Birth, Death and Resurrection of Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED

I remember it like it was just yesterday.

I was working at a Suncoast Video store in a mall in the suburban hell of my hometown.  My main education at that time didn’t come from school.  It came from the VHS tapes I pulled from the shelf of that store.

Often it was horror, science fiction or cult cinema that my square little world and universe frowned upon.

One of those films I was intrigued by wasNightbreed.

I was familiar with Hellraiser, it was the bad-boy horror film of the time, so different and original, dark and subversive.

The images and the world created in it disturbed you and titillated you both at the same time.  Barker’s magic, the ability to connect the pleasure senses with the fear senses.  Giving you a secret feeling, one of excitement, adrenaline and forbidden.

Like opening the box (The Lament Configuration) choosing to watch his films or read his stories was a profound and seemingly forbidden experience.

It was with all those thoughts that I purchased the VHS ofNightbreed.

POWER RANGERS Reunite at RI Comic Con

By Atlee Greene

In 1993, The Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers television show debuted on Fox and became a children’s sensation that took the world by storm.

Twenty-four years and seventeen incarnations later, the franchise has stood the test of time, while those who were there from the beginning still hold a deep reverence for the series that started it all.

Fans who attended Rhode Island Comic Con this past weekend had the opportunity to attend a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers panel. The guests of honor included David Fielding (Zordon), Richard Horvitz (Alpha 5), Karen Ashley (2nd Yellow Ranger), and Austin St. John (The OG Red Ranger).

Men, women, and children of all ages lined up with joy to ask those pivotal questions such as an inquiry from a ten-year-old girl who asked St. John if he and Amy-Jo Johnson, The Pink Ranger, were dating. That alone speaks to the timeless nature of the show since the young lady was born long after the original series was off the air.
