ANIMATION GEEK: Chit Chat Roulette...You Never Know What You're Going To Find

$

Chatroulette is a concept that, on the surface, seems pretty awesome; random strangers connect online and share stories and conversations and, hopefully, the universal we are introduced to a world that we didn't know previously. Of course, it ended up turning into a dick parade so, whatever altruistic beginnings that Chatroulette had, was lost to a world of poorly shaved nether regions.

Luckily in David Lüpschen's Chit Chat Roulette, the hairy meat stick is replaced by animated objects and puppets which, thankfully, are much more palatable and artistically done (not to mention funny).

Although, I do have to say, there is something impressive about seeing a grown man whipping his trouser snake back and forth against his thighs in order to impress whoever might be watching that makes one appreciate the fact that we humans are nothing more than a bunch of perverts roaming around on this big blue and green planet.

I guess I'm just a sentimental gal.

TOTORO Lives! Scientists Discover A New Species And Name It After Miyazaki Character

Scientists, who also happen to be animation nerds, have recently discovered a new species of Velvet Worm, naming it Eoperipatus totoro after Catbus from My Neighbour Totoro, due to it's resemblance to the beloved public transit character:

While that is an adorable name for an adorable worm thing, the biggest question I have is, "WHAT THE FUCK IS A VELVET WORM?"

Thankfully, the answer can be found via this link HERE...also, just so you know, Velvet Worms can squirt slime out of a couple of face holes which will ensnare and then harden around their prey so that it can not escape. Upon trapping said prey the worm will then climb on top of it and inject some kind of Alien-like acid saliva which liquifies the prey's insides so that the worm can then slurp it out like a milkshake.

Yep, just one more thing to be afraid of thanks to nature.

Most Devastating, Tear Inducing, Soul Shattering Cartoons Ever

Animation is an art.

Yes, it can be entertaining fluff, but it can also be a powerful medium in which to tell a story.

But you don’t need me to tell you that cartoons are not just for children.

Great people like Hayao Miyazaki, Tex Avery and John Lasseter have been doing that for years. But the concept that an animated film can move a person to tears is still a somewhat new concept.

So, for all the naysayers out there still holding on to the ancient concept that cartoons are for kiddies, here is a small list the most devastating, powerful and soul-destroying examples of animation to ever be inked.

KEY & PEELE Reveal The Darkness That Is Steve Urkel

Most people might have forgotten that Family Matters was a spin off of the sitcom Perfect Strangers. Larry Appleton's co-worker Harriette Winslow (JoMarie Payton) and her relationships at home with her husband Carl (Reginald VelJohnson) and family were the initial focus of the show.

Until the twelfth episode of the first season brought a one time appearance from a nerdy young boy who took Harriette's daughter Laura out on a date.

His name was Steve Urkel.

Portrayed by Jaleel White, Urkel became the breakout character of the series, transforming it from a family comedy to a mismatched buddy comedy with Urkel and Carl often taking center stage.

But was there something far more diabolical going on?

Key & Peel seem to think so.

We may very well be entering the era of the independent action figure. With companies like Bossfight Studios and Marauder defying the odds and fulfilling fan desire with their successful Kickstarter initiatives, it seems nothing is impossible.

The fact we are getting 4-inch Eagle Force and Captain Action figures blows my fanboy mind!

Captain Action Prototype

With advancement in technology and crowd-funding we’re seeing smaller studios and companies use talent and initiative to compete with the big guys when it comes to collectable toys.  Something that is great for those like myself, who collect action figures and are always looking for that unique line or cult classic character.

That being said here are 10 action figure lines we’ve never seen that need to become reality!

THE TOP TEN CARTOONS OF 1933

$

In this post, I’ll be covering what I consider to be the ten greatest cartoons released in 1933.

This was the year that The Three Little Pigs was released, which went on to be the most successful short of the decade and a breakthrough in animation, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Short of the year.

Hugh Harman and Rudolph Ising departed from Warner Bros. this year, and the end of series like Ub Iwerks’ Flip the Frog and Van Beuren’s Tom & Jerry, but there were several new series as well.

Newspaper comic strips proved to be a good source of animation ideas, resulting in Max Fleischer’s adaptation of E.C. Segar’s Popeye the Sailor and Van Beuren’s adaptation of Otto Soglow’s The Little King. Other new series in 1933 included Fanny Zilch at Terrytoons, Buddy at Warner Bros., Cubby Bear at Van Beuren and Willie Whopper and the Comicolor series at Ub Iwerks.

This year, Disney and Fleischer are still dominating, but you’ll see some Ub Iwerks on the list, a few Van Beurens and a dark, pin-screen animated French film.

Take a look:

DRACULA UNTOLD (review)

Review by Elizabeth Robbins
Produced by Michael De Luca
Screenplay by Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless
Based on Dracula by Bram Stoker
Directed by Gary Shore
Starring Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon,
Dominic Cooper, Samantha Barks,
Charles Dance, Charlie Cox

It’s that time of year again.

The days are growing shorter, the leaves change their color, there is a crispness in the ear, and Hollywood floods the theaters with slasher films and monster flicks.

Dracula Untold tries to break apart from the pack as an epic, Tolkien-sque fantasy, thinly veiled as a retelling of the classic Dracula tale.

Luke Evans (The Immortals, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) stars as Vlad Tepes, Prince of Transylvannia.

Once a political prisoner of the Sultan of Turkey, trained by the Turks to be the ultimate soldier, and now lives a quiet family life with his Queen, Mirena (Sarah Gadon, Amazing Spider-Man 2) and son, Ingeras (Art Parkinson, Game of Thrones) and tries to keep peace in his kingdom.

When the new Sultan demands Vlad not only pay his yearly tribute, but invokes the old custom of conscripting 1,000 sons for the Turkish army, Vlad refuses. To protect his small kingdom from the wrath of the mighty Turkish army, Vlad makes a deal with a monster for dark powers to turn back the invading forces.

While I found Dracula Untold vastly entertaining, I don’t think it was in the way the filmmakers intended.

SCIENCE GEEK: How To Measure Distance In Space...Seriously? Do We Have, Like, A Really Big Ruler Or Something?

$

We mere non-space scientist humans can not fathom the absolute enormity of space...it's impossible. Seriously. I mean we bitch about having to drive to our family's house for Thanksgiving and that's like two hours away, so imagine trying to figure out how many days it would take us to travel one light year (and just so you know, traveling to the moon took four days and that's only one light second...yeah, I said ONE LIGHT SECOND MUTHAF*CKER).

Thank Galactus that coming up with this kind of stuff is left to the big brains of science who have somehow come up with a way to determine how far away planets and stars are so that when we do start to travel this galaxy, we'll know which turn off we will need in order to get to...I don't know, Proxima Centauri or something.

So power-up your noggin kids for some seriously interesting scientific facts...and who knows, maybe you'll learn something.

Fact #17: Cows Love To Jam On Some Wicked Tunes While Being Milked

Being smart takes time, study and, above all, a capacity to retain the information and disseminate it in a way that is understandable...for most of us being smart is a goal better left to those people who don't have a wicked addiction to Netflix or spending the staring at squirrels.

But trivia? Well, that's a different beast. Trivia allows even the most idiotic human being seem somewhat intelligent, so why not hunker down, take out a notepad and start learning some amazing facts that, once repeated to others, will make you seem like you are a decent, educated member of society worthy of getting a promotion.

Or...more likely, it will help you win trivia night at the bar...whatever.

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES: Watch Johnny Cash In 'Five Minutes To Live' (1961)

In Five Minutes To Live Johnny Cash plays an asshole bank robber who, with the help of his partner Fred (Vic Tayback- Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Alice) takes the wife (Cay Forrester- who also wrote the screenplay) of a douchebag bank manager (Donald Woods-13 Ghosts) hostage at their house until they get $70,000 from her husband.

Of course all kinds of shit goes wrong (hey, it's that kind of movie) and there's a bunch of lady abuse in the film (kind of surprising since it was written by a chick) and all the dudes in the movie are complete fuckwads, especially Johnny Cash's character Cabot, who seems to be a bit of a sadist, and spends most of the flick forcing Forrester to wear a skimpy négligée, singing songs about killing her and shooting at her just to freak her the fuck out.

Like I said he's an asshole.

Oh yeah, Ron Howard is in the film too...he plays Little Bobby...he's pretty cool...you know, for a kid.
