It's the late 19th Century and a gruesome zombie plague threatens the American frontier in REVELATION TRAIL, a cross-genre zombie western shambling onto DVD this August.

As the dead rise, the West may fall, but standing tall against the horde is a conflicted holy man known only as Preacher (Daniel Van Thomas), forced to find his purpose in the fight against the undead. Joined by the hardened town Marshal (Daniel Britt) - a man with his own set of demons - the duo face the risen dead, a ravaged landscape and the evils of the living on a journey to nowhere. And along the way, the men discover which lines they're willing to cross in the name of survival in this festival favorite horror film, an Official Selection of the 2013 River's Edge and Night Risers Film Festivals.

'LOONEY TUNES PLATINUM COLLECTION VOL. 3 Blu-ray (review)

If you think you don’t need to upgrade to the Looney Tunes Blu-Rays, you’re wrong.

Despite the plethora of animated treasures Warner Home Video has bestowed on us, the DVD technology could be very unkind to the short cartoon.  Going beyond DNR, audio, and censorship issues, compression on dual-layer DVDs could be a nightmare when the programmers put all of the cartoons on a disc two to three times each.

Fortunately those days are over with Blu-ray technology. Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Volume Three is another winner with 50 cartoons in 1080p high-definition.

Despite that almost all of these were on home video before, the upgrade is essential for hardcore fans.

When you’re able to zoom into Leon Schelsinger’s face 2.5 times without coming across many digital artifacts, you know you’ve struck gold.

The only flaw is the programming: there really isn’t any. It’s basically a garbage dump of Warner cartoons, kind of grouped by character.

True, it’s the films themselves that matter, but for those accustomed to the reasonably well-programmed compilations of the previous laserdisc and DVD releases, it’s a step down.

Here’s a breakdown of the cartoons and transfer issues (if any):

CROAKING TERRORS: FROG MONSTERS FROM CLASSIC CINEMA

$

Frogs are some of the cutest and most innocent creatures on Earth.

Who could ever imagine them as a horrifying menace?

Well, here are half a dozen fantasy-horror films that tried to do just that.

I'm distinguishing frog creatures from fish creatures, so the list doesn't include fish-men as in CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954).  I'm also distinguishing frog creatures from lizard creatures as in THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON (1959).  But I'm including all manner of frogs: life-sized, large-sized, regular, deformed, demonic.

Since my territory is classic cinema, my list will stop in the early 80s.

While these frog-horror movies hail from different times and places, one thing that ties them together is their weirdness.  It seems that whenever filmmakers used frogs for monsters, they were aiming to be daring and creative.

So while the results are mixed, the movies remain as strange, and strangely enjoyable, viewing experiences.

I've written more about each of the films in myClaws & Saucers guidebook, but I hope you'll enjoy the comments, comparisons, and links below.

Paradise Lost: Saturday Mornings: 1984 vs 2014

What is a childhood without a heavy dose of animation?

In this day and age, even grandparents can recall watching animated heroes fighting baddies, be it young grandpas who watched at home on dialed tellies or older pappies who caught the afternoon matinees.

Cartoons. They shaped us. They fed our minds. They ruled our thoughts before sex, money and vanity took over our waking moments.

For the first decade of most of our lives, cartoons were king.

And for most of us (Hasidic Jews, the Amish, kids whose parents had a “Throw out your TV” bumper sticker not included), Saturday was a holy day.

For decades, children instinctively understood the Saturday morning ritual. It needn’t be explained nor shown. Like ants or bees, it was almost involuntary.

Saturday morning:
  1. Wake up at an unnatural hour and move into the kitchen.
  2. Grab sugar-based nutrition.
  3. Set up camp in front of a television.
  4. Stare slack-jawed in what might resemble a petit mal seizure for half a day while dosing up on a heavy amount of animated fare and sugar.
  5. Repeat for 10 years.
The lineup included copious amounts of pastel bears with sugary sweet dispositions, intergalactic warriors who may or may not later be blamed for later fascinations with leather daddies and celebrity starrers where bands/sports figures/Mr. T helped teens solve mysteries.

And Scooby Doo.

For six hours.

Saturdays were not for the weak.

However, it looks like the Saturday morning ritual is a thing of the past.

In today’s day and age, it’s hard to find the mind-numbing timekillers of yesteryear.

So, let’s take a small look at the 30-year difference between schedules of the big three…

A Brief Look at Texting and the Internet in Film and TV

$

TV and films, for the most part, have yet to adapt the digital age for a viewing audience (except for Sherlock, Sherlock is awesome at it) but perhaps that inefficiency comes not from the filmmaker's ignorance of the medium itself, but from an inability to understand the technology as the storytelling form it really is. As our world becomes more defined by being online, that will hopefully change, but until it does, film commentator Tony Zhou, takes a look at the issues (and solutions) of texting and the internet in film and television.

Let's just hope that the future of texting in film will include characters not reading texts out loud.

How Do You Know You're Real? Be Aware That The Answer Isn't "Because I Just Ate An Entire Jar of Nutella And I Hate Myself"

René Descartes may have proposed the idea that a person's reality can be summed up as Cogito ergo sum ( I think, therefore I am) but what if everything we are is not what we are thinking, but what an autistic child is thinking while looking at a snow globe with a miniature hospital inside of it...wait, that was the ending to St. Elsewhere. Okay, so it's not that, but what if we are nothing more than a battery powering a machine society and...no, that was The Matrix...I don't know, maybe we are what we think we are.

I have to go lay down.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: Public Enemy- PROPHETS OF RAGE

$

Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was one of the first politically inspired albums I ever bought and it completely destroyed me emotionally. As a white chick growing up in a predominately white, affluent town, the issues of race didn't affect me much since there was nothing for me to compare it to. But as I entered my teen years and became disenchanted with the statue quo, I immersed myself in music and films that opened me up to other cultures and issues that made me realize that there was more happening in the world than who to go to the dance with.

Right now the issue of race is once again at the forefront with the choke hold death of Eric Garner by NYC police and the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, and while FOG isn't a place for politics, it is a place to explore the visceral experience of pop culture, and for me, watching the escalating feelings of disenfranchisement of an African-American community and the subsequent riots and protests taking place in Ferguson, has reignited the need to listen to a lot of Public Enemy and seethe with anger that we are not heading toward that Star Trekian world where race, religion, gender and sexual orientation has zero effect on the human species.

And while you would think that with all the anger and chaos that people are feeling I would be soundtracking the Ferguson protests with songs like Don't Believe the Hype, Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos or even throwing on Fight the Power from the album Fear of A Black Planet, but what I seem to be aligning myself with is the song Prophets of Rage and repeating the following lyrics in my head like a calming mantra:

I roll with the punches so I survive
Try to rock 'cause it keeps the crowd alive
I'm not ballin',
I'm just callin'
But I'm past the days of yes y'allin'

I don't know what is going to happen in the days, weeks or months ahead, I don't know if it's finally time for all of us to take to the streets and demand our voice to be heard, but what I do know is that I will continue to keep myself fired up and ready for whatever comes next because, like the immortal words of Public Enemy:

 I rang ya bell
Can you tell I got feelin'
Just peace at least
Cause I want it
Want it so bad
That I'm starvin

The Pull List: BATMAN #34, HEXED #1, TMNT #37 & More!

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!
X #16
Writer: Duane Swierczynski
Artist: Eric Nguyen
Colorist: Michelle Madsen
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $2.99

Whether it’s the over the top world of WWE or the caged combat of the UFC, I love watching a good throwdown.

Duane Swierczynski and Eric Nguyen masterfully crafted a brutal encounter that is viciously impressive to watch unfold. X is for the most part, a brutal killing machine version of Batman.

This makes the lowlifes of Arcadia go to even more desperate lengths than most villains to rid themselves of their vigilante problem.

Enter Archon, a well-tailored Adonis with uncanny speed and supreme fighting acumen, and X is suddenly faced with his gravest challenge. The fight was exquisitely brutal on all fronts.

The page layouts with visuals displaying Archon’s swift muscle memory and striking proficiency was scary and felt as if I was transported to the abandoned warehouse where it all took place. I love the scene where X pulls out his gun and Archon darts across the room and takes it apart before the trigger is pulled.

That set up some similar moments afterwards where X grows increasingly desperate with each punch he’s beaten to. The setup to this encounter was also well done as the hype sounding the beating X was in store for carried a credibility of consequence. The ending leaves things in in the air, which enhanced the level of uncertainty we normally see in this series. Archon has been positioned as someone who only shows up when it’s worth his time, so the stench of a sound defeat will haunt X for a while.

Score: 4 out of 4

SCIENCE GEEK (KID'S EDITION): How Do Rockets Work?

$

With the kiddos in or heading to school they are probably not interested in learning anything other than what they have to in order to pass some tests, but life-long learning not only helps them gain important critical thinking skills, it supplements the education that they are already being given, allowing them to gain the know-how that we will all need to rely on for the betterment of the future.

And what better way to introduce the little buggers to science and chemistry than by having them watch an awesome web-series like Reactions (produced by the American Chemical Society).

In this episode, Raychelle Burks (a Doane College Postdoctoral Fellow) explains the fundamentals of how rockets work by introducing both the solid and liquid propellants that create a ride-able explosion. She also shows how educational video games like Kerbal Space Program (where the players create and manage their own space program) can help people better understand the science of rockets through interactive play (which is ultimately a better tool to learn complex subjects rather than through reading alone).

So put the young 'uns in front of the computer and have them watch the video. You might be surprised by how much they will enjoy it..

I'm Singing In The Rain...Just Singing In The Rain

In this ode to the improvised movie scene, Cinefix has gathered together their picks for the top 10 best ever. While I don't necessarily agree with all their choices (how could you leave out Robocop's Clarence Boddicker spitting blood all over the desk sergeant's paperwork and saying "Give me my fucking phone call"?) I am happy to see a few of my personal favorites listed.

So check out the video after the break and, if they didn't include your picks, add them to the comments.

The Reluctant Disney

One of my favorite Disney classic features is The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, which was released last Tuesday on Blu-ray in a double feature pack also containing Fun and Fancy Free.

I’d been psyched about seeing these in HD since the release was announced months ago, and it was enough to add it to my Wish List, but the other day I came across the Blu-ray in a store (yes, an actual physical Blu-ray for sale in a store) and noticed a very tiny little sticker sandwiched between the key art for the two features.

Lo and behold, it proclaimed a bonus feature of The Reluctant Dragon.

I purchased the Blu-ray right then and there.

Kontinuity Kops — Bendis’ X-Men and the Perils of X-Continuity

I’m not sure if you know this, but comic book fans tend to be a pretty passionate and opinionated bunch.  I know, I know, you’re shocked.  And get this: water is wet, and I am very, very sexy.

Mind blowing, right?

Exactly.

Now, while you’re recovering from the threefold truth bombs I just lobbed, allow yourself if you’re able to contemplate the following question: How important is continuity to you?

Chances are, there are a lot of different answers to this one.

There are those who don’t care a single iota about it.  If one issue contradicts the last one completely, so what?  The only thing that matters is the most recent read and whether it was good or not.

For others, continuity is an absolute, the spine upon which sequential storytelling rests and if one issue completely disregards the last, it destroys any reasons of becoming invested in the characters in the first place.

And still others have a mixture of the two philosophies, feeling that it needs to be there at least as a guideline but that it should never really get in the way completely if a good story can be crafted from its disregard.

Not so, my friend.

I'm here to warn you about the worst of the worst, the episodes that are simply not worth your time.

To quote Comic Book Guy, any of these is in the running for “Worst episode ever.”
