Professor Badass, Look-Alikes and Me

0

I recently met up with a friend of mine to see Snowpiercer, the fancifully dystopian mindjob of a movie about the last of humanity on a train circling a frozen, future Earth.

The movie was good and bizarre, as Captain America took on Jadis the White Witch in order to fight his way to the director of The Truman Show.

Before the movie, we grabbed some dinner at a pub. Upon sitting down, my friend proceeded to tell me that she liked my beard in its current fashion: more than an inch of length at the chin and muzzle before tapering on the sides to thin razor-edged points and a near-bald crew cut.

“You look like Professor Badass,” she said.

I had no idea who the hell she was talking about. But I trusted her when she said that it was some kind of Internet thing that I had missed, and to check it out later, and she’d be right. I simply thanked her for what had to be a compliment. How could being called Professor Badass not be a compliment?

Well, I looked up Professor Badass, and holy crap.

This is Professor Badass:

And this me:

Well, damn. A little more gray in the beard, but there it is. Chalk one up for a famous doppelganger!

And so, one of the few times that someone said I looked like someone, and it was true.

BEST WORST DIRECTORS

0
0
It’s true that bad movies can happen to good people.

But, what about an entire career of bad movies?

To that, I say, bad movies can happen to excelsior people.

If I may be so honest, which I always intend to be, my favorite kinds of flicks are those that bombed at the box office or took years to build a cult following.

There’s something genuinely magical about those who can direct an enjoyable, yet “bad” movie. It’s a talent that few have properly used to their benefit. These men are as important to me as “the greats” and in some respects, greater.

Before Sharknado, The Room, or Snakes on a Plane, films like The Violent Years and Not of This Earth strayed from the path to create an audience for films that wouldn’t necessarily be “hits.” With the utmost thanks to these “bad directors” they’ve birthed a new genre of cult film that can be appreciated across the decades.

But, you know you can’t talk for very long about bad movies before this dashing crossdresser comes up...

DIAGRAM FOR DELIQUENTS (review)

Review by Clay N Ferno
Produced by Robert A. Emmons, Jr., Julian Darius,
Francesco Gambino, Peter Gambino, Mike Phillips
Executive Produced by Robert A. Emmons, Jr.,
Francesco Gambino, Peter Gambino,
Julia Nelson, Shannon E. Riley, Allen Woll
Written and Directed by Robert A. Emmons, Jr.

Sequart takes on the Senator McCarthy of comics, Dr. Frederick Wertham in their latest deep dive into comic book history.

Longtime fans of comics are familiar with the Comics Code Authority stamp on nearly every comic book cover until very recently, and those with a sharp sense of comic book history are familiar with Wertham’s damaging 1954 book, Seduction of the Innocent.

The book blamed comic books and other media for the rising problem of juvenile delinquency in the United States and spearheaded regulation for the funny books.

1954’s comic book hearings in front of United States Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency had Wertham as the key witness.

From censorship to juvenile delinquency to the severed heads in EC Comics, Diagram for Delinquents looks at the tarnished side of the Silver Age and how one man changed the face of comics and book publishing forever.

A MOST WANTED MAN (review)

Review by Benn Robbins
Produced by Andrea Calderwood, Simon Cornwell,
Stephen Cornwell, Gail Egan
Screenplay by Andrew Bovell
Based on A Most Wanted Man by John le Carré
Directed by Anton Corbijn
Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams,
Willem Dafoe, Daniel Brühl, Nina Hoss, Robin Wright

Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man is stellar film making and a visual smorgasbord of beautiful camerawork and phenomenal acting.

Based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré and starring the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman in his last completed film (Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 & 2 were made before this but are being released after it) as Günther Bachmann a German intelligence officer who is working to decipher whether or not a half-Chechen, half-Russian, brutally tortured immigrant that has turned up in Hamburg’s Islamic community is really the victim he claims to be or if he is another extremist with an agenda for terror.

Taught and very methodical, A Most Wanted Man kept me riveted the entire 2 hours.

YVES SAINT LAURENT (review)

Review by Elizabeth Robbins
Produced by Eric Altmayer, Nicolas Altmayer
Written by Bertrand Bonello, Thomas Bidegain
Directed by Bertrand Bonello
Starring Gaspard Ulliel, Jérémie Renier,
Louis Garrel, Léa Seydoux, Amira Casar,
Aymeline Valade, Helmut Berger

Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized fashion.

He saw it as an art form.

The Yves Saint Laurent Couture House was one of the first of the great French fashion houses to create a prêt-à-porter(ready-to-wear) line, making haute couture fashion accessible to the average person.

His work has been on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

His mark on fashion is still felt today.

Jalil Lespert’s Yves Saint Laurent is a beautifully crafted film, full of style that non the less reveals the deeply flawed man that was a revolutionary force in fashion for more than five decades.

HERCULES (review)

Review by Elizabeth Robbins
Produced by Brett Ratner, Barry Levine, Beau Flynn
Screenplay by Ryan J. Condal, Evan Spiliotopoulos
Based on Hercules: The Thracian Wars
by Steve Moore, Admira Wijaya
Directed by Brett Ratner
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane,
Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes,
Peter Mullan, John Hurt

How do you do something new with a story that is over 3000 years old?

For Brett Ratner, director of Hercules, the answer seems to be you don’t.

You just go with what you know works.

Hercules is a check-your-brain-at-the-door, go buy some popcorn, and enjoy the air conditioning summer movie.

If you're someone who has seen a lot of "sword and sandals" films, Hercules will feel like a rehash.  With its PG-13 rating, Hercules's fighting is violent, without being gory. Paramount is counting on those familes with tweens dollars, and the film is geared toward it.

While watching the film I felt as if Ratner had a checklist for what the film needed to be successful.

DO YOU WANT TO PLAY A GAME? 80s Movie Computer Hacking- The Super-Cut

0
0

Back before everyone owned a computer, there was a certain mystery about them, which, of course, made for some seriously fun movies. Unfortunately, using an actual computer isn't that exciting and watching someone use one is even less so, so Hollywood did what it does best...lied about it via some super cheesy graphics and implausible techno-babble to make "Hacking" seem incredibly sexy and dangerous.

And this super-cut of 80s high-tech hacking from Found Item Clothing epitomizes the very best of those films (although, I don't agree that Blade Runner should be included, but what do I know).

Get ready to be amazed at what a TRS-80 can do when given to a nerd.

Video after the break.

27 UNBELIEVABLE LOCAL TRADITIONS

Eeyore's Birthday Party In Austin 2014

Lots of places around the world have weird festivals or traditions but these 27 places take the cake when it comes to WTF'ery...seriously, why the hell would anyone dress up like a devil and jump over infants? Could someone from The Spanish village of Castrillo de Murcia please let me know, because that shit is weird.

If you're interested in learning about places where people chase wheels of cheese down hills, celebrate Eeyore's birthday or (shudder) watches The Parade of 1000 Clowns, then check out this week's Mental Floss trivia show with my favorite fantasy guy, Hank Green, after the break.

You know, I'm going to go ahead and avoid that whole clown parade segment just to be safe.

"This Generation's 'Yellow Submarine' - ADVENTURE TIME AT COMIC-CON

By Erin Maxwell

Rescuing princesses, finding treasure and fighting bad guys was how Adventure Time first began.

But over the years, Finn the Human and Jake the Dog are dealing with issues not typical for your usual kiddie fare. Parental neglect, death, dementia, mutilation and the ever-present issues of the lovely ladies of Ooo has given the hit show a demographic that reaches beyond the playground sect.

And even though the show has found massive success since it debuted in 2010, the cast and crew of the hit Cartoon Network series are still in awe at their popularity at San Diego Comic-Con.

Three Childhood Favorite Movies That Changed My Life

0

Whenever folks talk about movies from the 70s, 80s and 90s that really struck a chord with them, chances are they’re safe choices.

I know I do it. I’ll talk all day (and have talked all day) about how Ghostbusters was a defining cinematic moment for me as a kid.

But, really, Ghostbusters was a defining cinematic experience for pretty much everyone of a certain age. Giving it props doesn’t really make you special. It just says you were tapped into the same cultural zeitgeist everyone else was back then.

So I got to the thinking about the lesser movies of my formative years.

The ones that didn’t take their place in the pantheon of pop culture awesomeness but still took hold of my imagination in a way that, sitting here in my mid-30s, still makes my inner 8-year-old giddy. The ones that don’t too often get love.

Until now, that is.

So here now, are three movies that, for better or for worse, helped shaped my young tastes.

SDCC - PENNY DREADFUL - SEASON ONE Arrives On DVD & Blu-ray October 7

Double Feature Movie Show: HILLBILLYSPOILTATION!

Hillbillies get a bad rap in horror movies.

There are so many movies about poor folk of the mountains/woods/desert/lake/office park slaughtering the “innocents,” whether they be teenagers, middle aged men or corporate drones on a retreat.

What ends up being more true than anything is that these “innocents” are actually douche canoes who don’t care about the land that they’re on or the people that they’re disturbing.

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES: Zorns Lemma...You're Going To F*cking Hate It

0
0

I have a fried named Alex who, in his infinite wisdom, deemed every Wednesday "Wacky Wednesday" so that he and his friend Thad could embark on some stupid activity in order to feel alive (or, to just do stupid, inane things for fun). One activity that never came to fruition (but one I always wish had) was something called "The Worst Day Ever". It involved a plan for Alex and Thad to eat a bunch of chocolate Ex-Lax, put on adult diapers and play chess while their Ex and current girlfriends talked about them while they both tried not to crap themselves.

Watching Zorns Lemma is a lot like that. It's is horrible, painful, nonsensical and yet, for some reason, a certain number of people wanna watch it.

All I can say is that it involves letters and images and...well, I guess the best way to describe it through the words of Howard Thompson from The New York Times“…never, at least so far during the Film Festival, have so many Philharmonic Hall viewers slithered outside for a cigarette.”

Enjoy!

Movie after the break.

SDCC - Nothing Is What It Seems: Returning To TWIN PEAKS 25 Years Later

By Erin Maxwell
About 25 years ago, the death of Laura Palmer became a tantalizing mystery that crept into many American households. It wasn’t just the whodunnit factor of Twin Peaks that made the David Lynch-created show a major fascination of 1990, but the otherworldly tone of the series, the intriguing writing, the amazing cast and an honest-to-goodness WTF factor that kept fans tuned in.

Two and a half decades later, fans of the series will finally get to return to the small logging town for a final taste of cherry pie as the Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery box set hits shelves on July 29.
